Would anyone be interested in contributing to a "Portfolio of the Week" thread? Submit a portfolio of 2-10 stocks. You get a make believe $10,000 invested equally in each stock starting at Monday's open and ending at close Friday. I'll calculate your return . Each week we'll have a new portfolio. I'll list the top 10 periodically and at years end. You may win some cheese, a fat lady link, or even greater prizes. A special "Portfolio of the Week" home edition game will be given to all departing contestants.
You have nothing to lose (except respect in the business community) and everything to gain. First guinea pig, I mean contestant to reply with their portfolio will be in next trade shortened week.

Sounds cool! I'll post my picks tomorrow night.

Forget tomorrow night...I'll post my picks now!

I'll go with DHB and XMSR. $5,000 in each. I think they'll both go up next week.

If only I had the guts to do that with my own money....

You're #1. Runner, you'll be on the waiting list for now. Lets see wouldn't it be cool if we got 49 different Mr.Market members for 49 weeks.

billyjoe

RL,
I think it will be 1/18 because of MLK day on monday. Maybe I wasn't clear, but each person only gets one week with their picks and they will be sold on Friday and I'll keep track of that total to compare with others. I won't continue to track the stocks after the week is over or it would become impossible as the numbers grew each week. I don't think we'll get a different contestant for each week so many people will get more than one chance during the year. I guess you could call it a one week contest of stock picking ability. Figure out your picks RL and you can have the 3rd portfolio starting January 31st. Come up with another TASR or JOBS and we'll put you in the Mr.Market is huge hall of fame.

So we are only going to track one person's picks for the week? I think that skews it pretty badly, as some people will get good market conditions, others poor ones. Plus, everyone has a bad week or two. On the other hand, it'd be hard to track 49 ports each week.

I'd pick $7000 on HUM from my "freight train" port and 3000 on ARGN from my "Pop or drop" port.

jiesen
01-16-2005, 05:04 AM
sorry scifos, but the rules clearly state that the money is to be invested equally in each stock. don't blame me tho, I didn't make the rules!

by the way, Humana is quite the impressive freight train... I may look more closely at this one myself.

Thats too bad, since I wouldn't bet half the farm on anything in my Pop or drop port. But if this isn't going to be real money, then I'd fire away with 50-50 HUM and ARGN

This week, that turns out to be: PRFT, NANO, SYXI, DIOD.Going back to the beginning of the thread, I guess maybe I misunderstood the rules. Only one member gets a portfolio each week? I agree with the poster that said this would skew results, since market conditions vary. If you decide to track all portfolios submitted for each week, then my portfolio is as stated for this week. Whatever you decide.

Since the response is so good this week, as an experiment all 5 of you guys will start tomorrow. Webs, Runner, Scifos, RL , and Stenz.
Runner, I'm only allowing your first 10 picks, otherwise I'll go insane and I'm sure you wouldn't want that. No more contestants this week. Maybe we'll have 5 portfolios each week if this works. Will try to have some comments each day. Final results each Friday. Let the games begin!

We have a winner and I think you'll be surprised. First , some stats. Of the 24 stocks picked in the 5 different portfolios, only 4 advanced for the week, 20 declined. I'll say... I was down 700% at one point. I thought it was a mistake in the scottrade quote, but I verified at OTCBB that indeed someone bought 75000 at 0.009 today. Good thing this wasn't a real trade, or that might have caused a margin call to cover at a penny... a good reason I'd never touch this stock with real money.

New-Born,
Fiat's have been notorious for years. There always were lots of low mileage ones for sale because they never ran long enough to accumulate many miles. When they broke down you couldn't get parts or find anyone to work on them. A friend left his Fiat convertible with the top down in downtown Cleveland with the keys in it and nobody would steal it.

BilllyJoe,

Fiat's are awful. I can't understand why Rick Wagoner signed a put agreement with Fiat. Fiat has until 24 July 2010 to exercise their put, too! It's an $8 Billion put, and the company is nearly bankrupt. It may bankrupt GM. That's awful management! And that's very bad for the US because GM has 200,000 employees. Soon, there will be no US car companies.

What is the market cap? I think I have enough $ to start such a business.
billyjoe

good question. the calculation is pretty tough, as it involves limit approximation (the number of shares is very quickly approaching infinity and the price is approaching 0 even faster) as the CEO tries (and fails) to issue stock faster than the OTCBB MM's can short it. at this point, nobody knows how many shares he's issuing in a given month, as he's stopped informing his shareholders when he's going to issue new shares or declare his splits. (that was the whole point of his latest merger/name&location change)

I first saw it mentioned on the XING message board, when they released their infamous "bamboo PR" which compared investing in GMSV (then AFRD or AFRC or AFRN, I forget which) to planting a bamboo shoot. I read through their filings, and thought this had to be the worst scam company I've ever seen.

guess not, seeing that GMSV is down more than 30% again today. well, that's just par for the course for them... meanwhile CME is up another 6% today! I'm on a roll this week... 2 more days like this and CME is back over 230. I just wish my XING limit had been hit at 8.8 this morning, could have been a trifecta.

well, blow me down. GMSV actually ended up 25% today. Though I suspect a little foul play here, since 17 trades at 0.0004 preceded the final $40 purchase at 0.0005 (wow, that's a lot of money to entrust with GMSV), I can take it, since that still puts me at a 55% gain for the week.

4. Gatorman 10025 ARLP faded at the end

BillyJoe,

I play this game under protest! You cannot short shares under $5 on Scottrade, and with the new shorting rules, I dare say that not one single broker on earth would allow anyone to short that crummy, cheap, penny stock!

[If anyone thinks I actually care--think again. I am just practicing complaining].

Remember when Geo. Brett smacked a game winning homer vs. the Yanks, and as he crossed home plate, Billy Martin went out to the umpires and complained that the pine tar was too high on the bat, making the bat illegal, and voiding the home run? He won his protest. And I want to win mine!

actually, the MM's trading GMSV are all trading naked shorts with each other. rules for NASDAQ and NYSE stocks don't apply to OTCBB stocks, and with enough money, some brokers will let you short just about anything.

case in point, more shares typically traded in a single trade of GMSV than were currently outstanding (or they did when it was possible to know how many shares were issued and outstanding- this was before the name change to GMSV).

oh yeah, and how dare you tarnish the good name of penny stocks everywhere by calling GMSV one. micropenny, or perhaps even nanopenny would be a more appropriate term.

New-Born Baby,
Tobin Smith is no Mr.Market. You probably won't see a list of his recommendations ever posted with the results. As one person put it " I enjoy watching Tobin Smith on Fox, he's often wrong , but full of enthusiasm."
As for SIMG. It recently posted negative earnings, this for a quarter that was supposed to be a blockbuster with the high demand for HDTV at Christmastime. It's price is down about 33% from the high. Its chart looks bad. I know Tobin Smith says wait until HDTV takes off and this thing will explode. Any Mr.Market pick would be a better choice in my opinion. SIMG does seem like it can't miss, but something usually goes wrong along the way.
That's my observation.

I had no idea this guy was on TV. (I don't own one, so I am ignorant of the financial gurus on the tube). Incredible!

Well, that explains the recommendation of SIMG. He wants the price to go up so he can get out!

We need 4 people to challenge Jiesen for the next "Portfolio of the Week"
Don't be shy. Think of the glories that await the winner! It has changed Scifos and Jiesens lives. It's better than winning the lottery. Mr. Market will leave his weight lifting bench to hang on your every comment. You'll be attacked in other forums.
Pick 1-10 stocks you like and they will be tracked for a week. Given $10,000 in play money with no strings attached, think of the possibilities. It's so exciting, excuse me while I catch my breath. .................. First timers will get first priority, but if we must, we'll take some old timers trying to win back their credibility. It starts at market opening Monday. As added incentive, if Jiesen is the only contestant, he automatically wins and we'll never hear the end of it.

yeah, I'm pretty much just messing around with GMSV... I'd never really touch that stock, so I'm withdrawing that pick. Probably there should be some limit included in the rules of the game, for instance a company has to have at least a $10M market cap or some such factor to keep extrememly volatile or illiquid stocks from giving a contestant an undeserved victory. I think raising the minimum number of stocks from 1 to say 4 or 5 would be a good idea, too. Winning on a fluke is easy with just 1 or 2 picks...

In the face of a horrendous week in this competition, I submit the following humor: :D

A Letter from an Irish Mother.

Dear Son,

Just a few lines to let you know I'm still alive. I'm writing this letter slowly because I know you can't read fast.

You won't know the house when you get home - we have moved.

About your father - he has a lovely new job. He has 500 men under him - he cuts grass at the cemetery.

There was a washing machine at the new house when we moved in but it hasn't been working too good. Last week I put 14 shirts, pulled the chain, and haven't seen the shirts since.

Your sister Mary had a baby this morning but I haven't found out whether it's a boy or a girl, so I don't know if you are an aunt or an uncle.

Your uncle Patrick drowned last week in a vat of whisky in the Dublin Brewery. Some of his workmates tried to save him but he fought them off bravely. They cremated him and it took three days to put out the fire.

I went to the doctor on Thursday and your father went with me. The doctor put a small tube in my mouth and told me not to talk for ten minutes. Your father offered to buy it from him.

It only rained twice this week, first for three days and then for four days. Monday was so windy one of the chickens laid the same egg four times.

We had a letter from the undertaker. He said if the last payment on your Grandmother's plot wasn't paid in seven days, up she comes.

Your loving Mother

PS: I was going to send you five pounds but I had already sealed the envelope.

Spike,
I'm passing your letter on to my 84 year old 1/2 Irish mother. She collects such things and sends them to her friends for amusement.I must be like the son in the letter. Even though she wrote it slowly and I read it slowly, it took awhile for me to catch on.
Look on the bright side Spike, take out MFLX and you're right up with the rest of the pack.

Webs,

I visited the Star Trek site, and they have details about the Queen of the Vulcans, but no picture. But if she was 22 in 1967, that would make her 60 right now. Hey RL, look her up . . . .

I'm still holding it too...paid low 32's a few weeks ago...held through the carnage. My original plan was to accumulate...then it fell apart...so no more buys. The thing that ticked me off was that they wouldn't answer my emails. Then I called them...they referred me to their IR firm up in S.F. They never answered me either...but I still have some.

Thanks Spike...I don't believe in diversification...LOL

Anyway, I made my pix this week w/o doing my DD...so I just picked the ones from my own portfolio that I think may do well...Heck, I have not even looked at Barron's yet.

Sort of funny...I get all this free stuff...I never subscribed to TA of S&C or Barron's...but I get 'em. In fact, yesterday I got a notice to renew Latina Magazine...I don't subscribe...but I got the latest issue today.

Actually, I get free access to a lot of paid sites too...NO, IBD doesn't cut me any slack...pretty cool though overall...IIC

Grebnet,

Great idea and since there are few picks this week I'm jumping into the contest. You won't see Alex Trebec do this. Once and for all my remaining credibility will be destroyed. Here are my picks and why.

OMM and TOPT nice patterns , tankers will continue hot streak
BEBE up and coming retailer overdue for a nice run
short IIG great idea brings in desperate customers who are flim/flammed out of their $. Numerous investigations and lawsuits on the horizon.

Okay then, I'm in again. Getting a little away from what I did last week though. (VLO, NX and NUE will take a breather this week)

HOC took a short breather from my Freight Train list, but is now back in the top 3 for the list

MUR, an oil stock. Its on my industry leaders list, and its one hell of an industry.

DHI, its also on my FT list, and is on my MoMo and industy leader lists.

VAS had a MACD crossover and gapped up on friday. Plus a bullish engulfing on thursday. Actually this one is kind of a shot in the dark, as I haven't really looked closely at it.

TNSU its low price gives me a chance for it to get a big % gain. Plus it just had a bullish engulfing on friday and a bullish harami on thursday.

Ok since I suggested it Ill start with this week.

ISO -- Ill never get my money back on this one. Ive had it from my "stupid years" . It does appear to be improving now . Just stated they will have revenue in 1st qtr of 2005 greater than all of 2004 . and profits may be turning up(positive.) I actually tried to add to my position Friday but didnt fill. This is a longshot , but only .45

HURC- -----This is showing great growth.. Had great earnings and has had a pullback since then. Only risk is they are benefitting from weak dollar so you gotta decide if the dollar will strengthen(sp?) . If not this will go up(I think).

EFJI-------The confusing part about their earnings is fron 2nd qtr 2004 when they reported a .08 loss despite a 64% increasew in revenue. This loss appears to be due to a charge for repriced options ( wouldnt want the officers to lose out because their company didnt do as well as planned in the past) I think repricing options sucks but this is a widely excercised approach to keep officers. Earnings are 3/1 so i am gambling on improvement. Guidance has been positive.

EGY -- I sold a week ago at 4.85 happily with a 13% gain . Ive been trying to buy back ever since at a lower price and will continue to try. Their numbers look too good. I often think I must not understand this industry as their multiples appear too good. If anyone has thoughts about this stock please share them .

I welcome any positive and especially negative views on any of these choices.

My AGYS pick probably goes best under the fortuneteller category.

A black box model (meaning one that I have no clue how it works) that's been pretty steadily spitting out such winners (60%+ in a few months) as POG NAFC and SUN, and more recently VTIV, which is up 30% since it was bought by that model, just bought AGYS. I have so far been too lazy to follow it up with proper DD, and so probably won't buy it... but entering it in the POTW contest might force me to take a better look at it. I'm not too happy about passing on VTIV at 19, when I first considered it, and was also too lazy to really look hard enough at it.

Anyway, so far from what I see of AGYS it looks solid enough. Fundamentally, they are making almost $2B/year in revenue now, up from $1.4B last year. The market cap is only about $0.5B, which is also only 2-3x book value. They seem to be capable of making at least $50M/year... though I'd have to look closer to be sure about that. That gives them a P/E of 10.

And techinically,

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=AGYS&t=2y&l=on&z=m&q=l&c=

the chart is pointed in the right direction.

The news seems to be all pretty good so far (but of course that can always change overnight). But to tell you the truth, I don't really understand their business at all.

P.S. Greb, I'm liking the avatar... go Grebracer!

Ok. Iíve been lagging. Here is my explanation (BTW, good idea Greb):

MANC: It had been a momentum stock up until its recent consolidation. Consolidation was at least average in length, and found support at the 50 DMA, always what you want to see. Sales and earnings growth long term has been not much to brag about, but it seems to be turning things around at this point. PE of 26 is at a discount relative to industry. They report on 3/9.

FORD: Like MANC, had momentum up until 3-4 weeks ago. Consolidation has been brief thus far, supported at about 6.50. Revenue and earnings growth really starting to accelerate. PE on par with industry, but growth and momo make it worth keeping, for a while, anyway. They report on 4/21.

DW: Just ask $$Mr. Market$$ :-) Seriously, I did read the write up and was impressed. Looking at RVís, seems like an industry which has taken a beating over the past year. Doesnít make much sense, since old folks want to hit the road in retirement, so I cannot see things being down too long. Technically, it has been in a very long consolidation, making me think that it may take off even faster than MMís target suggests, once it breaks through resistance to new highs. With solid EPS estimates over the next two years, and a PE discount relative to industry, it could well get 50% over the intermediate to long term.

MickyMouse

My picks this time are all technical: CDV is a price/volume momentum, and modt is cup and handle, but not reach and pass pivot point yet for a real money buy.

I planned to pick EGY but it has been claimed. EGY is also a cup and handle formation, and fundmentally sound. But not reach the pivot yet for a buy.

This was a great week for the make believe billyjoe portfolio IIG short up 27.95% and BEBE up 16.42% as well as the real billyjoe portfolio FRO sold at 18.4% gain and BMHC sold at 45% gain. If I could do this every week I'd be on an island with my sweetie before year's end.

You are right BJ...I was just checking my watchlist...5,376 tix...I think I need to narrow it down a bit...LOL

But actually, in late 2003 I used to keep about 300 on watch...I set alerts too...when the market moved I got so many alerts and was so confused I couldn't do anything. Now I prioritize my lists. I miss many good one's but in the end I do pretty good I guess. Today I bot DATA on the pullback from about 20.38 to 19.04(approx)...got it at 19.30 and heldover...Best, IIC

IIC, what does it mean when the 50 dma , the 200dma, and the RS line all meet in what appears to be the case with WTSLA? I'd like a screen showing about 100 stocks like that. Should we be fearful or laughing?

Well I had a great week last week. For this thread I should have left ISO off ,,....a penny sock for a good reason . I try to stay away from them now.

My account activity has been in a hold pattern.

1. CFK --distributes the general oilfield supplies, including pipe, valves, fittings, production equipment and tubular goods to producers of oil and gas in Canada.
Has had good revenue and earnings growth over last 3 yrs.
Has a little higher debt/equity (0.49) than I usually like.
Doesnt give much guidance. I usually like stocks that give guidance and consistently beat it. I'm in at 6.95

2. EFJI- carry over from last week . Last years (2004) guidance was for revenue of 78-80mill with earnings of 0.28-0.30. They reported 80.8 mill and earnings of 0.53/share. On 3/1 they raised guidance for 2005 to 95-100 mill with earnings of 0.50-0.56/shr. I'm banking on them beating that .

3. HURC- also a carryover( call me boring , but i like what Ive bought) has treated me well since $9 , good earnings. I think it has some legs left.

three is enuf longer shots which I wont enter but am holding are SMIT and SYXI.. not quite as good of quality but have a shot to run over time.

Good luck to all............................................

I don't particularly look for it...but a friend does and does rather well...maybe Spike has some thoughts on it?My thoughts on tight moving averages are the same as tight bollinger bands or NR7 - i.e. a potential for a pick up in price volatility. Range-breakout setups are good for those.

Grebnet,

Guess what stock this year that started with excellent earnings and relative strength, had the greatest one day breakout, based on it's earnings announcement? The answer is HURC. Up 24% on Feb 16th or was it the 17th. I've been tracking all highly rated stocks that go up at least 4% the day of or the day after earnings announcements. Have got 46 in 37 days. They also had great volume up at least 50% over average. The three closest to HURC were BMHC with 15% on Feb 8th , ISRG with 15% on Feb 8th , and JOYG with 18% on Feb 23rd.

Agreed Spike...but what is NR7?
NR stands for 'narrow range' and 7 is the number of days.
http://www.lbrgroup.com/index.asp?page=FAQ
"An NR7 is a day in which the (latest) daily range is narrower than the previous six days. The significance of this pattern is that it represents a marked decline in price volatility. Range expansion and an increase in price volatility tend to follow an NR7 day"

billyjoe
03-07-2005, 08:36 AM
Grebnet,

I go to IBD's "Where the big money's Flowing Now" , make note of all stocks up 4%or more, then click on "quotes, news" to see if earnings were just announced that day or the previous day. At the end of the day I put the ones I think are up 4% or greater into my online trading account list of quotes and it tells me exact %. Usually come up with 0-3 per day. This info is going to be used for a graph to determine if there is a best time to sell after earnings ,but before next report. Probably I'll use an 85 day time period to see if any pattern develops. Want to get at least 100 stocks and will test in groups of 25. When I hit 50 , this week some time I'll list them along with % gain on earnings day.

I don't own any of these, but here goes:

MANC will likely get a short term dead cat bounce after getting hammered on earnings. Personally not touching it, though.
BBSI - I like the business model. They are an outsourcing outfit that basically covers an entire HR department. Good profit growth. I'd consider buying, but it's extended.
SNHY - Industrial hydraulics equipment maker. Interesting flow control cartridge technology. Good growth. Also an extended stock. Awaiting a pullback.

OK all ................new entries................ Billy

EZEN-tiny company ..heres what they said in their 3/7/05 statement.
" For the year ended December 31, 2004, we achieved earnings per share of $0.23, $0.13 per share on an operational basis and $0.10 per share realized from tax benefits, and would like to match that earnings per share level in 2005 purely on an operational basis

SYXI-good earnings and earnings growth... only 5 mil in debt and 50 mil in cash

SMIT - again tiny co . growing rev/earnings no debt

billyjoe

That's right Billy Joe :D I sold it amid that $1.70 drop earlier in the week.

You make me think, though, perhaps I shouldn't put a stock in the contest which I don't currently believe in. Scratch MANC, although it'll probably do OK this week after it opens in the basement.

Plus my having two pix instead of three makes the roundoff easier :D

Thanks but I can't take to much praise on this play because I haven't taken a position in it yet. When an if I do take a position an make a few points then I'll accept most graciously.

I based my choice on two factors. My gut feeling that the stock had been driven up to an overbought status and that after last Friday's close the last couple of candles prompted me to believe some consolidation was in the wind. I was a day or two early an even after today's drop still would need it to go to 42.50 range to consider an entry on the short side. The short play also got alot of help from the market today. Once the momentum begins to the downside it helps the short to continue as swing and momo guys take their profits out from the last couple of days. I can see it going to 41/40 range over the remainder of the week which would be a normal consolidation after this most recent runup especially if the markets remain in the funk they are in then look for a bounce back up.

RL,

The contest for next week is on. We need more contestants. I stopped selling Easter flowers a few years ago. Walmart sells them below what my wholesale cost would be and with $1000 a month gas bills it's not worth growing myself. Lots of flowers are coming to the U.S. from Mexico and South America , hard to compete with 25 cent an hour field laborers.

Back to the stocks, RL I just have a feeling that you seed your dart board with not just field run stocks , if not , your grandkids must have inherited "the gift". THE and ISRG can't be totally by chance, can they?

billyjoe

RL
03-26-2005, 08:20 PM
Billy Joe you have heard of what It Is. Now you have heard of what a dart Is If the contest Is on and nobody Is In then that should make me a three time winner It's just what I've been waiting for. What Is happing to you Is just what happened to me. Don't know how old you are but If your In a real struggle you most likely could catch on with a florist or In the re-lated field. What ever you do do will be the right decision. Just ask him what to do.

Have a great EASTER

billyjoe

RL,

I forgot to tell you if you're having problems with the darts, attach pheasant feathers to them. You might not hit better stocks , but you'll look cool trying.

Come on everybody do you want to concede a third championship to RL without a fight? Especially when he admits to having a dart malfunction.

Anyway, I remember this one; ALSK. Now, combined with the increased dividend announcement for holders of record on 3/31 and a favorable article in Barron's I will pick ALSK long for the contest even though it should gap some at the open on Monday. Maybe I'll add another one or two later...IIC

well alrighty,
I've gotta go with the following, all long.
VTIV, tested 50 day, now wants to go back above 9 day, no position
HITK, still like it, seems to have a seller at 20.80, maybe it can take them out, long
LVS, just looking for a couple of bucks, higher lows and lower highs, plus with MCRI coming back to the 100 maybe some renewed interest will develop. below 9 and 50 day, risky, no position
BUCY, no position

Jiesen,

You are the first 2 time winner of "portfolio of the week" , however , RL was the first 2 time winner if you include the original "March Madness" contest last March.
I'm telling everyone who asks, that no, jiesen's low dollar portfolio isn't on steroids and an * will not be placed next to your permanent record. Maybe a cocktail of viagra and cialis kept those stocks up this week , but it wasn't steroids.
One step closer to taking over the world , congratulations.

Seriously, what do you see in the next 12 months for LJPC, it's pretty stable for a .65 stock.

p.s. I take that back, just checked out LJPC chart. Seems it just had a good week.
