Soooo...Who's the big winner? Who gets to be remembered as the one who beat the Vulcan?
Actually DUDE!!!! about 18 players beat you this week.jejejeje.... oh sorry.... that's disrespectfull.... I should have the Vulcan death grip applied to myself for saying that.

Hey Webs..... ooooooooommmmmmmmmm.... This " Vulcan focus therapy" really works.... I think I won.... I wound up with about 7.5%.

But.... I shall not claim victory until the scorecard is figured later tonight. If I am indeed the victor this week, I owe it all to you Webs.... Your detailed instructions were remarkable. In my mind.... VA no longer stands for Virginia....

Edit.... GatorMan Won not me.... I came in second.... But I really meant to be second.... I had a good reason to be second.... I'll explain why later on....

Webs, well it ain't me! Lye, and I wasn't one of that 18! jejejejeje (so that's what it feels like to laff like that)

Congrats to this week's winner, GATOR!

OK, Lye, permanent damage control for POTW is called for. From this moment forth until the end of time I put a mandatory -4% stop limit on any and all picks I enter into da competition. Thanks dude. That will save me from this type of mess in future. I'd rather stop out twice for -8% than get my head handed to me like GM did this week hehehe

Although AMLN did not win it for me this week (or any week so far) it did manage to eke out yet another consistent small (~2%) gain for the week, so it's working just as planned for me. Though it seems small, a consistent gain of 1%/week compounds to more than 60% annually, and this consistency should probably earn me bonus points in the POTW cumulative average tally. Example (-20% and 25% for 2 weekly results average to 2.5%, but compound to 0% net gain)

From any vantage point whatsoever, 60% per annum "ain't shabby." I hope you win with your strategy.

Well fellas it was a pretty good week for the overall market. I actually made out pretty good this week....

GatorMan takes the gold in stealth fashion as he hides right below the waterline and then SNNNNAPP.... SPLASH!!!! he takes the gold....lol.... Well played Gator!!!! You were HUUUUGE this week DUDE!!!!

Well I must settle for 2nd which is very good for me..... You know I might just be keeping Spike company waaaaay down there if not for ther expert advice I'm receiving from the sidelines from the Vulcan.....ooooooooommmmmmmmmm....
lol.... sorry Spike I had to say something DUDE!!!!

Third goes to PHOTON!!!! who played an old favorite GOOG.... Good call this week Photon!

SledDawg, Shadow and our "superstar" Ray Long!!!! came in 4th, 5th and 6th and all gained over 5%.... I'm impressed with the two Newby's performance this week.... I'll take special note of their picks in the future....

WTG all players who managed to finish green this week.... The rest of you guys just plain out "suck swamp water"..... Well except for Webs.... He lost by design....jejeje

You guys are probably wondering about my humiliating defeat...

The truth is that I knew good and well that CAL was going up when I took it short. I just thought it was about time that I let someone else win for a change.

Also I wanted to demonstrate that by not using my exclusive sytem, the winners will not appear so frequently. I knew at the beginning of the week that CAL did not fit the vectors in my VTP for a short positon.

Now lets take LPX for instance. The VTP vectors lined up almost perfectly for a long position. LPX closed at 26.93 on Friday. The VTP was screaming Buy! Look waht happened...LPX closed at 28.86 on Friday. Granted this was not a huge move, but the indicators were correct for a bullish move.

Now that I have explained my motives for this weeks loss, I am going for a win next week. I will show no mercy.

I must agree.... Your VTP is a remarkable system.

I'll make a side bet with IIC for next week.... How about $5 bucks Doug? Of course If I win that counts too because I'll be using Webs' VTP system to make my trades too. What you'll be betting against is Websman's VTP.

Alice.... DUDE!!!!?.... you didn't break the rules but you're just a little quick on that trigger imo. I'll bet if loaned you my Citori Lightning and I took you rabbit huntin with me you'd waste alot of meat.... and maybe shoot a good rabbit begal or two with those "off the hip shots".lol.... To be safe, I'd try to stay behind you.... I'd just be prayin that a cottontail didn't decide to run between us.... I've found that sometimes you gotta let that lil sucker run.... good dogs will likely bring em back around and you can re-position yourself for a proper shot.

BRMC opened @ 67.69 and you covered @ 9:44AM $68.39 so you actually lost a little bit on the trade.... guess you saw movement in the bushes and fired with both barrels.... BOOM....BOOM.... you shot ol gypsy, she was a pretty good rabbit dog too.

GOOD NEWS!!!! You are allowed another pick anytime this week. I use the open price for the entry and the high tick within the minute (posted) for the cover on a short.... I've got you in cash right now. I'd be glad to discuss the rules further or even post a copy for your reading enjoyment.

. . . The wife says bring some of your (extra hot) homemade salsa. yow!!!!You got it my man! My Saturday afternoon project is going to be a trip to the Fresh Market, where I will procure all the ingredients I need to whip up a HUGE batch of the most delicious, yet wickedly hot, salsa you're likely to ever encounter! I will use those orange scotch bonnet peppers, a close relative to (and equally as hot as) the deadly habaneros. (Some pepper trivia: While the hottest jalapeņos weigh in at about 8,000 Scoville Units, a measure of "hotness," habaneros and scotch bonnets range from 150,000 to 325,000!) I will mock Emeril Lagasse, for as he's busy kicking his latest concoction up a notch, I will be kicking this baby up about 25 notches!!! You say our friend, G.W. likes it hot, eh? Well this stuff will light him up like a freakin' roman candle! Don't worry, it'll still be humanly possible to eat it, but the deviousness of it all is that it tastes so good you can't stop, so while you're face is on fire you're still shoving more fuel into the furnace! LOL! It oughta be fun!

As for the game, I don't have a dog in this fight, but I expect Pittsburgh and ol' Roethlisberger ought to be able to handle the Seahawks. Although I don't want to underestimate the Hawks' defensive line. If they can blitz and blitz and blitz and keep the pressure high they will have a heck of a fighting chance. I see where Seattle led the league with 50 sacks during the regular season.

p.s. What the heck are "GoJis"? I still don't know.

While you wimps are scarfing it up watching some guys throw some pork skin around Sunday...I'll be busy finding next week's winners...However, I will probably watch the last 5 mins if it is close.

Speaking of Scoville...About 13 years ago I was on a quest to taste the "Hottest" hot sauce. Had to work up to it over a 6 month period...I never did taste the absolute "Hottest"...But I did have a quick taste of one that came in a bottle w/ an eyedropper...A pinhead size drop made your head sweat and you had to sign a liability release to buy it...

Anyway...then I went back to those with some taste to them...I like Marie Sharp's Fiery Hot http://www.chilliworld.com/SP6.asp?p_id=68 it really isn't that hot once you get used to it and most of the Brazos brands http://brazoslegends.com/ However, they don't sell via the net...But I keep a couple of sampler packs in the cupboard http://www.chilliworld.com/SP6.asp?p_id=113 Here are some you might try...I prefer Texas and Caribbean ones myself: http://www.chilliworld.com/Hot_Sauce_by_Country.asp

As far as Scoville...Here's a bit of history on 'ol Wilbur Scoville: http://www.tabasco.com/info_booth/faq/scoville_how.cfm

spikefader
01-31-2006, 02:35 AM
oooooo yup, the hottest is without question....
http://www.thescarms.com/hotstuff/redsavina.gif

The Red Savina Habanero sets the record for the highest number of Scoville units in a pepper, measuring 577,000 units!

It's the title holder in Guiness Book of Records, as well as the lesser-known Spike's Hottest Ring of Fire heat scale lol

From New-born baby's comment I gather that GoJis have something to do with the process of elimination. While you wimps are scarfing it up watching some guys throw some pork skin around Sunday...I'll be busy finding next week's winners...Wimps, eh? Well I hope your pick is a lot more exciting than this week's: Lye...start me out in cash...Doug(IIC)Wimps ... well I never! Hrrumph! :) Thanks for the thoughts and the link on good salsas picantes.

The hottest hot sauce I've found in a bottle is called "Widow (http://www.hotsauceworld.com/widhotsaucno.html)," and its label boasts, "No survivors." I gave a bottle of this stuff to Mrs. Lyehopper a couple of years ago and warned her to use it extremely sparingly. She made the mistake of tasting a drop of it on her finger, and she can testify as to its potency. I smuggle this stuff into the Mexican restaurants around here so I can add it to the wimpy salsas they bring to the table. Seriously, all it takes is 10-12 drops in a dish of slasa to light it up good. There may be others even hotter, but believe me, it's plenty hot, and one would not want to use it undiluted. Widow ranks #5 on Hot Sauce World's Hottest Hot Sauce Top 10 List (http://www.hotsauceworld.com/hothotsaucto.html).The Red Savina Habanero sets the record for the highest number of Scoville units in a pepper, measuring 577,000 units!Yes it does, Mr. fader! I found that fact too, but I don't believe I've ever tried the red savina variety (though I would like to one of these days). I have chosen the scotch bonnets 'cause I've used them before, and I know for a fact that besides being wildly hot, they also have a really good flavor!

Happy trading today, everyone! Prediction: Google's Q4 revenues (http://research.businessweek.com/company_financials.asp?Button=Get+Report&Symbol=goog) will exceed $1.7 billion, or roughly a 10% increase over Q3 (as opposed to Wall St.'s consensus of $1.29B, which would equate to about an 18% Q-Q decrease).

I tried that # 10 Endorphin Rush...It really tasted bad...If you really want to try something hot...try this:

All new 10% OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) formula @ 2 million Scoville Heat Units and asome, unbeatable Fox 2% (even faster acting) OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) formula @ 5.3 million Scoville Heat Units with identifying ultraviolet dye. It is the strongest OC formula allowed by law. Non-toxic and non-flammable. Effects last for 20 to 90 minutes. Units can be fired many times and have a range of 8 to 20 feet, depending on model.

ok just for you DUDE.... I'll try to fix it for tomorrow's post....

Spike that's why I don't like to do the limit/stop thing. Takes too much time for the scorekeeper to check all that stuff. I prefer to just have a player make the decision to buy or sell at the actual time of the post. If they can't watch it that closely then they should just use the open the next day for the trade.

Also helps if the actual post (to trade) is short and sweet.... It's easier to spot that way. Notice how I put the heading "trading" on the posts when I'm "trading". lol

Although I still believe that TIII is still a screaming buy, I need a short term gain to win this contest. Therefore, I have searched the VTP database for a new winner.

Using the actual time of the players post.... I look at my one minute real time ticker for the stock. There are three bits of data for the "minute" (1) open (2) high (3) low.... On a "buy order" I record the "high" tick. On a "sell order" I record the "low" tick.

VLO yesterday @ 3:56PM est looked like this:
open = 62.51
high = 62.55
low = 62.48
I recorded you at 62.55

I will double check all the prices today.... Thanks for telling me your concerns. I might change to the "minute tick open price" next week.... but I've been doing it this way since I began so I'll leave it this way this week.

Anyone who has questions PLEASE tell me. We'll get this thing straight by weeks end.

No big deal . . . but you've got me down for $62.55. I probably can stand the loss of the .06, but was afraid I might need that .06 to beat out Spike and RL.

Somehow, I accidentally deleted my original post, so here it is again...

Although I still believe that TIII is still a screaming buy, I need a short term gain to win this contest. Therefore, I have searched the VTP database for a new winner.

In my opinion CAL is overbought and overextended. All of the VTP indicators show the same.

Lye... I will go ahead and sell TIII at the open and take CAL short.
Dude.... Deleting this post was a good idea afterall.jeje.... TIII is up over 11% today.

You're catching on!

Yes, TIII did make a nice move today...that's why I'm still holding it in my real portfolio.

If you'll notice, however, CAL did in fact drop today. It should also drop far enough tomorrow and Friday to put me in first place.

Once again Lye, thanks for the prompt payment. Yours and others donations are helping to make www.vulcantrader.com (http://www.vulcantrader.com) a reality. I am considering you for a possible leadership role in my organization.

Shoo Webs....are you saying you weathered that -18% drop in TIII?

It's all about confidence in your position and proper diversity of your portfolio. Yes, I did weather it out, because I knew that TIII was going to make a move up. Also I was more than able to risk the 18% because of the fact that no more than 10% of my portfolio was invested in this particular position. Diversity is a wonderful tool.

Please tell me if you see any errors.I see one error: The title says "For Week of 1/27/2006" when it should say ". . . 1/30/2006." When you do the update and that calendar pops up, whatever date you click on as "week-of" date is what's going to show in the title. Now you're saying, "Why not just let me type it in?" And the answer is, because this is much better. One click of a mouse on a pop-up calendar beats the heck outta manually editing. There are a few things I have in mind to streamline things even more, but the basic framework is there and it's working okay.

Well my ISRG reports after the close tomorrow. Here's hoping they don't pull a stunt like Google did the other day. But that's just for the game ... I don't own any in real life. I'm a little concerned about why IMCL, which I do own in real life, sold off in extended trading after such a fine performance during the day. There's rarely any after hours trading to speak of with that stock. Something's brewing over there, and I think the cover will come off soon.

You should write something of what you think or are expecting with each chart. No one would really know which direction you're thinking without something. Unless you were just looking to get some kind or any kind of a response from the rest of us just to see what we would say. There were a couple there that I'm stalking at this time. I own PAAS from around high 20's.
I'm waiting for OIH to start back up to short CAL. CAL will drop to the $17 range if oil goes off. GOOG will return to favor and when it does it will be a great play back to some of these recent levels. I'm watching those March $400 calls. I really don't see why it shouldn't get back to $400 once people forget about this latest earnings report. An it won't be long before they do.

And I already have my pick for next week. I've mentioned it here before but will keep it under wraps until Sunday after the Super Bowl or maybe Monday morning or maybe just at the open or maybe I'll just go to cash Monday morning. It's up 2.9 % this week so far. Looking for a stronger week this coming week. But I did come in ahead of both the Vulcanaciously Vociferious Vulcanized Vulcan and his partner in crime, whose name will be withheld in lieu of his already notoriously famous personality for being the Vulcans sidekick, this week so let's have a great Super Bowl weekend on just those two reasons alone while they stew in the deepening oblivion of the minus pool
trying to figure out what the hell went wrong this week. Can they recoup face this coming week. I don't think so. Do you? Don't miss out on the action this coming week because I think it could turn out to be a good one. Can you dig it?

Gary, congratulations! Gorgeous pick! Good to hear you are holding RWC yourself. Last week I was grumbling a bit about CMCO: in the green, but below the POTW average, but this week things are different. This was the worst week of the POTW to date: down on average -5.94%. My Mechanical Fund was up, partly because of CMCO.

I think I'll hold CMCO just another week!

Lye, I have two suggestions for the POTW rankings:
- add an average result please!
- perhaps it is an idea to calculate a total percentage by compounding, and not by simple addition. Someone who lost 10% with one stock and gained 10% with the other has not scored 0% but -1%. Things are all in a spreadsheet now, so this should be no problem. Instead of simply (Gain1 + Gain2) you use ((1+Gain1) * (1+Gain2)) - 1

Ski...You must be pickled if you've already drank that whole jar...

Webs,
Just kidding with you and Lye by the way, about the stocks but you guys know that. It wasn't that big of a jar to start with but much appreciated. My buddies stop over an I like to give each one a small, half of a shot glass, taste. It's so smooth everyone loves it. I've been taking about 1/4 shot every now and then before jumping into bed and I sleep like a baby. Sometimes it's hard for me to stop my brain from running I've got so much going on and the goji juice has been great for that. I've been pickled since 1966/1967. It's the governments an the army's fault. I had a great week with the projects at work and real estate and was in a playful mood last night. My highest finish in the POTW in awhile. Lately I haven't been able to hit the floor if I fell out of bed in the POTW which hasn't been good in my trading account because I usually own the ones I play. Get ready for this week Webs. You've lost two weeks in a row and this could be a trend moving into the minus pool.

Why would you like to see the 1% penality for a player who plays two stocks?.... Cause you never do?hehe.... This rule would benifit you and not me. I always trade twice and you NEVER do. Why would I do that? why Why WHY?!!!! Does Lyehopper look LOCO? don't answer that.jejeje.... Speaking of LOCO.... I just cooked a "test chicken" mmmmmmm!!!! PERFECT!!!! I ate the whole freakin thing.

BURPPPPP..... skuse me.... back to the POTW.... If you think about it Karel, it's fair to add the two stocks and not penalize the player.... Since every player has the same opportunity to trade twice.... EVEN YOU DUDE!!!! now, shall I mail you a leftover chicken on Monday?

Karel
02-05-2006, 03:09 AM
Lye, that's not called penalizing, it is called compounding. ;) 1st stock loses 10%: $1000 becomes $900. $900 invested in a second stock that gains 10%: the $900 becomes $990. Net loss 1%. It can work out differently too: Both stocks lose 10%: 1000 > 900 > 810, for a loss of 19% instead of 20% by the current calculation method. Both stocks gain 10%: 1000 > 1100 > 1210, for a gain of 21% instead of 20% now. I think it is better to see both "events" as related, which requires compounding. The general average consists of "unrelated events", which requires a simple average.

Karel

I need some clarification on the rules.

As I understand it: (1) a player must take a position before the market closes on Monday, even if it's just in cash, or else be penalized 5%, (2) a player may take a position on one stock at a time and may trade out of the first stock at any time during the week and either go to cash or take a position on a second stock.

I'm assuming a player may sell the second position prior to the end of the week. But once the second position is cashed out, that's it, and you can't buy any more after that. Is that correct?

As I understand it: (1) a player must take a position before the market closes on Monday, even if it's just in cash, or else be penalized 5%, (2) a player may take a position on one stock at a time and may trade out of the first stock at any time during the week and either go to cash or take a position on a second stock.

I'm assuming a player may sell the second position prior to the end of the week. But once the second position is cashed out, that's it, and you can't buy any more after that. Is that correct?

That's the way I understand it Dude...just don't talk bad about Hank Sr and you'll be ok.

Yes Rob that is indeed correct.... If you are asking this question because of Ray Long's extra pick?.... Well sometimes RL loses count of his darts and sometimes he loses count of his beer cans.... The beer can count and the dart count are sometimes intermingled and he posts extra picks.... Seems like a strange system to the layman but remember Ray is the 2005 POTW points champ and his method is very effective.... Webs and me are presently trying to recruit Ray over to team VTP.... Ray has been offered a complimentry jar of GoJi brandy to join us.... His attorney is now negotiating with us for a whole case.

Hey Rocker-Rob.... found a little program glitch this evening in POTW version 1.4.... When you have a player already in ca$h from closing the first pick.... then they want to close the second pick and go to cash.... and you hit the "go to cash" button it kicks out the last pick's gain completely dude! Try it with Ray's second pick and you'll see what I mean.

Yes, to the human who does not like El Pollo Loco this is most likely the case ... but you fail to see the significance of Websmans post to me.... You see Outback Steakhouse seems to fit somewhere within the VTP platform. Webs posting that link for me was a secret communication to me.... telling me that PARL was about to rally today. I know this is hard for a mere human to comprehend IIC.... but the way of the VTP is very complex.... only the GoJi will shed light on it's inner-workings.

Rob,
I can't throw a chart up from this computer as I haven't set it up with Snagit and Imageshack yet in my construction trailer office. But it looks like it just completed a double bottom cup and handle formation on the weekly. Small handle at the top of the right side of cup with decreasing volume just like they tell you to look for. That looks like an ascending triangle forming over the last few weeks so that could be a good indication of a breakout to the upside. I'm actually looking at the 10 min. chart right now and it's trading up .73. There was a MACD crossover this morning to the downside and the stochastics are turning down. RSI and CCI are both tracking in middle ground right now. I like the weekly but it would have been nice to catch it earlier this morning. Looks to me like it's ready to track up from here.

I'd like to know how anyone could think that you would get a decent piece of meat for that price..."Choice"...Not my choice.

At home we eat excellent prime cuts...But we save $$$ too...There is a market here called Gelsons...A bit more upper scale than Ralphs, Vons etc...My wife knows the butchers...They put the meat on sale one day before it expires on the "Best If"... day...My wife knows their schedule...We get filets, ribeyes, roasts etc at about 60-70% off...So you freeze them...That also freezes the date.

(1) Click User CP (CP stands for Control Panel)
(2) Under Settings and Options click Edit Avatar
(3) Scroll past the Predefined Generic Avatars, especially the Incredible Hulk one, all the way to the bottom and select the radio button that reads Use Custom Avatar
(4) There you can either enter the URL of an avatar on the Web, or upload one from your computer. The avatar cannot exceed 100 x 100 pixels (physical size) or 4.9 kilobytes (file size).
(5) ... and this is the most important one ... have fun.

Spikefader NAILED it this week folks! Remember the name of this game is the "portfolio of the week"... NOT the "Pick of the week".... Spike used all of the avenues availed to him to get this impressive 23.58% gain this week..... First Spike was short MOVI he covered it with an 18%+ gain.... Then he breifly moved to a cash position.... Then he bought INSM and played it till he was at his desired target, he sold it and moved back to cash and had a cold beer.LOL.... NOW thats the way the game is played!

A HUUUUGE pick by NY4Ever netted him 15.34% on any other week this would have been enough to grab the gold but he will have to settle for silver this week. WTG NY DUDE!!!!

The VTP has improved my focus and my insight. Thus I was able to finish third with PARL and 11.80%.... I should have done better. I am gratefull to the MFV.... and only hope one day to be the legend he has become.

No.... It's very "cool" to be a Vulcan NBB. It AIN'T "cool" to sell ADLR and two days later miss out on a 50%+ record gain. Instead of a weekly POTW loss of -8.88%....

Great finish this week Webs. I should have bailed on DXPE after the first day but was busy Tuesday and let it get away from me. Websman, with respect, it is my firm belief that this is hardly the place to open up a philosophical, moral or religious discussion of that magnitude, which discussions typically do not resolve anything and frequently serve only to engender feelings of acrimony. To be honest...I am pretty sick of hearing how everybody is sick...Here is what I posted (edited) at another forum today:

I do not believe in getting sick...May I suggest that you and your family get a Mantra.

Mine is "Every day in every way I'm getting better and better"...I say this out loud 20x...3x a day...May sound crazy...But I never get sick...Well, I have been sick to be honest...But not very sick and not very often(last time I took a sick day at work was early 80's)...I also do not believe in taking chemicals...I prefer that my body develop antibodies...Of course, there are some ailments that do require antibiotics or something like that...But I prefer not to get those...Doug

PS...I didn't make this up...I stole the theory of auto-suggestion in the 70's...Some say the guy I stole it from committed suicide...But I don't think so:

I've shot several white tails from my porch. It's a pretty good deer stand.lol

I'm sitting here watching "First Blood" on AMC.... Rambo just killed a wild pig with his bare hands and a knife tied to a stick.... Hey!.... Here's a true story about killing something with your bare hands....

I shot an eleven point buck on a dead run @ about 250 yards three years ago. I tracked him for about a mile.... At first the blood trail was sparatic.... then as he slowed I started to find large amounts of blood and even pieces of bone.... I eventially found him in a dry creek bed laying down, he had lost so much blood that he could hardly hold his head up. I layed my rifle against a tree and climbed down into the gully.... I pulled out my hunting knife.... My plan was to stick his throat and bleed him instead of shooting him again and risk damaging any more meat (You see I had done this before).... Well as I approached him and started to grab his horns he lunged at me with what life he had left.... hit me squarely in the chest with his horns. I dropped my knife and grabbed him by the antlers and climbed on his back.... I had a smaller pocket knife in my pocket which I grabbed.... It was hard to hold him down and I weigh 300 pounds.... I forced his head sideways and I cut his throat about five times.... I held that SOB down till he finally died.... I remember when I got off that buck's back I was covered with blood and my legs were shaking like I had been in a bar room fistfight (I have done that before too.lol). One of his brow tines actually went thru my shirt and thermal undershirt and deeply puntured the skin on my chest, I was brused pretty badly too.... I'm lucky he was so weak.... and that he didn't hit me about 10 inches lower.... I could have died next to him in that creek bed. I have to laugh when I think about what the Bedford Bulletin Newspsper headlines would have said if he had actually killed me.lol.... One thing's for sure.... I'll never approach a wounded deer again.

btw... Rambo just blew up the town.jejeje

I bought it Friday on what I thought was a c wave bottom. I like it this week. Was pretty beaten up this past week for about 5 points. We'll see. Hope your feeling better. We got 12 inches of snow up here an I was shoveling snow for a good part of the day. Our driveway is 110 ft. long and about 15 ft. wide plus all the sidewalks, decks, and patio areas. I got sweated up pretty good and now feel like something is coming on. I got to get a snowblower. We've had a real mild first part of the winter up thru January. Now we'll probably have snow until Memorial day. This storm was the heaviest accumulation in New York City since they started keeping records. It'll be good skiing upstate NY. I'm going Tuesday and Wednesday and taking my new Dell laptop with my Verizon wireless card so I'll be able to keep in touch at night unless I'm to liquored up to operate it. Good chance of that happening after skiing all day. I can now go broadband anywhere anytime. Just push the card into the slot. $59.95 a month. Good luck this week Webs. I certainly can't do any worse than I did last week.

In case anyone's interested, here are the standings as of the end of the sixth week in the POTW for 2006. I believe the figures are right, but if there are any incorrect entries, I would welcome a correction.

At the very top of each column is the average of everyone's scores for the week, including the 5% penalties for those who failed to show for the week. The Avg column computes the average gain/loss for all weeks. The reason some players (including yours truly) have blanks is becuse at that point they had not yet entered the game, and so while they are not subject to the weekly 5% penalty, still their total gains/losses are averaged based on the number of weeks (in this case 6). Lyehopper agreed that this would be an equitable way to figure it.

If some of the more recent newcomers are saying, "Five percent penalty? Hey! Wha? Wait! Who ... ? Oh, man!" I can only refer you to the rules (http://img326.imageshack.us/img326/5960/potw06rules14mv.png), as we have them.

The color coded weekly results are there to quickly locate the gold silver and bronze positions for the week.

http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/8059/potw6wk4gn.gif (http://imageshack.us/)

Here are the official results for the prior weeks, against which you may check the above figures. As I've said, if there are any discrepancies, please tell me.
Week 1 (http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/6501/potw16066iz.png)
Week 2 (http://img274.imageshack.us/img274/5420/potw113065rq.png)
Week 3 (http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/5166/potw120069vh.png)

Week 6 (http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/1593/potw210063jp.png)

Actually I put this spreadsheet together in order to give it to Lyehopper, but I haven't seen his instant messenger on line all weekend, and I didn't send it via email because he doesn't check it often enough. (I'm the same way.) So I'm posting the results this time.

You know those high-speed police chases shown on TV every now and then? Well they don't always end peacefully or without injuries. This is an unbelievable video (http://www.ebaumsworld.com/videos/runoveraccident.html) of one such incident--but be forewarned, it is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. I've never seen anyone get tossed so far from a moving vehicle.

Speaking of hunting, I guess y'all heard about V.P. Cheney blasting his hunting buddy (http://today.reuters.com/news/newsarticle.aspx?type=topNews&storyid=2006-02-13T051636Z_01_N12148881_RTRUKOC_0_US-CHENEY-ACCIDENT.xml&rpc=22). Man this is the kind of stuff Jay Leno lives for.

Can you post the scorecard this week?Well, seeing as how I'm already logging everything, I'll give it a shot. But please don't rely on me too heavily, because there will definitely be greater demands on my time in coming weeks.

Incidentally, I'm showing the following list of players as no-shows thus far. Have I missed anyone? Alice4321us, BillyJoe, DMK, Gatorman, Lil DogTick, NY4Ever, ParkTwain, Photon, Runner, Sekto, Shadow, Sisterwin2, Sowers, Spikefader.

Gotcha, Spike, and a good short it is so far too, but it looks as though Ray's YMI is taking the early lead. My VECO is already starting to disappoint me, but I'm hanging on for a blowout earnings report this evening. If that fails, then blowout is what's going to happen to all four wheels on my game this week.

Let's see how long Lye stays on top now that he is no longer running things!!!!!! lol

The Pentagon announced today the formation of a new 500-man elite fighting unit called the United States Redneck Special Forces. These
Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas boys will be dropped
off into Iraq and have been given only the following facts about terrorists:

1. The season opened today.
2. There is no limit.
3. They taste just like chicken.
4. They don't like beer, pickups, country music or Jesus.
5. They are DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for the death of Dale Earnhardt.

We expect the problem in Iraq to be over by Friday.

I grew up quail hunting and I never shot anyone. I did "pepper" an English Setter bitch named Gypsy in the back side once. She was a good dog and would hold a point like a statue.... but she had this really bad habit of chasing rabbits during a quail hunt. I shot her at about the same distance Cheney shot his buddy Saturday.lol.... Gypsy got the point and stopped chasing rabbits.... Well.... at least she listened a bit closer to me when I hollered "WOOOO COME-IN GYP!!!!".... I was only 17 years old and I really felt bad after that. I stopped the hunt and took her home and dressed her wounds and picked about a half dozen #8 shot out of her butt.... She lived to be 16 years old, I guess I was about 30 when she died.... I miss her.... Wonder if Cheney's hunting buddy wasn't listening to him.... You know they HAD to be "hitting the old GoJi"....jejeje

Indicative of the types of individuals running the show for us. Anyone who has hunted all their lives would make sure of the clear shot before pulling the trigger. Did anyone read the whole story? They we're riding around hunting from a car and spotted the covey of quail and had to get out of the car to take the shot. It's beyond me and to embarrassing to even mention. They should have kept it under wraps. I would have liked to been a fly on the wall at that moment and seen the whole entourage. The royality of the USA in action. They make me want to puke.

Well at least they weren't deer hunting. It is easier to pick out bird shot than a slug. I am puzzled about the getting out of the car bit. I am careful with who I hunt with and I guess the old attorney should have been too. Maybe you need body armour when hunting with Cheney.

Those barn raised quail fly low anyway. I've shot em and it ain't like hunting wild quail, they don't know how to really fly they have no wild instincts and when flushed they scatter in all directions, they might land 50 feet away and just sit there till you kick em up again....

So to put it into perspective.... they were not really "hunting" just shooting stocked quail.... You don't drive by and just "see" a covey of wild quail setting around in a field.lol

I'm sure there was a truck in front of them.... stocking about thirty barn raised birds at a time for them to shoot at. See this link to understand how it's done.... http://www.amesplantation.org/field-trial/news-and-notes/default.asp

Look.... Cheney has a bad heart, right?.... and the other guy looked to be about 75 years old.... They won't walking behind dogs, hunting the conventional way, it's mighty tough on you.... they couldn't phsyically do it. They should have just let them "farts" shoot at the quail in the freakin barn.lol

Hey Ski.... Rob is pulling his data from yahoo. Like I've said before YAHOO SUCKS!!!!

I agree that $23.51 is incorrect.... Acccording to two other data bases I checked the official open was $23.60....

I'll check the other players 9:30 AM "open" prices and see if they are correct. Rob's intraday pricing looks good. and the closing prices seem right.

I'll see if he can blow the chart up a little too, my eyes ain't what they used to be. Ya gotta admit that Rob is doing a HUUUGE job so far!!!!

btw.... We are now using (and have been for the past two weeks) the "opening price" for the minute a player's intraday post was entered. I used to record the "high" tick for a buy.... and the "low" tick for a sell.... now they are all recorded at the minute "open"....

That 1st image above is Yahoo's report, and as Lyehopper correctly pointed out, that is the source from which this automated spreadsheet pulls its data. The 2nd one is from businessweek.com, and it's showing 23.60 as the open. That agrees with the Ameritrade Streamer chart, as shown in the 3rd image. It's interesting to me that your data is showing 23.75, because I recognize that Medved Quote Tracker software, and if I'm not mistaken, it pulls its data from Ameritrade too, doesn't it? If so, I wonder why there is a $0.15 difference. Nevertheless, can we settle on 23.60? Does that seem reasonable?

Lyehopper: yes I can configure the thing to grab data from another http site, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to get into it. Until then I'm afraid we're just going to have to keep pulling from Yahoo. I have other time-consuming commitments that mustn't be neglected. Rob,

Sure that's reasonable enough for me. The Time and Sales on Medved Quotetracker is showing $23.75 at 9:31 am. So that's not right on either. It could easily have been less at 9:30. 1 min. difference could definitely make a difference. No big one way or another. Thanks for taking a look at it. Ski.... You'd make a great manufacturing manager. One of the best thing a manager can do is scan for mistakes and raise questions. I've uncovered a lot of mistakes (in the making) before they actually happened by simply questioning my people... a good manager can then evaluate (by the answers he gets) if his people are really trying and thinking.... or not.lol.... He can also evaluate by the response he gets who are team players and who are not.... and who he can use to deligate responsibilities to. Lye,

I put everyone's feelings first before mine but not the job. I always end up with last place but I always get the job done with everyone happy at the finish. That makes me happy and coupled with the money makes my wife happy so then everyone is happy. I do keep an eye on and stay on top of thousands of things through the course of a project. Here are today's results. Lyehopper was all up in my face today about some of the opening prices, and as a result some of them have been adjusted. It seems that the price Yahoo reports as the opening price for the current day, while it may not be in agreement with most other resources, is corrected by the time it goes into their "historical quotes" database.

As you can see, the mighty and formidable Gatorman has performed his death-roll on all of us, and with FTEK whipping that awesome tail, he propelled his way into the catbird seat. Super pick, Gator-dude!!!

Ol' steady-as-she-goes Karel has risen convincingly to 2nd place with that danged CMCO. Doesn't that stock ever go down? (Well, there was last week.) Smooth, Karel, smooth!

And then there's Spikefader, who decided, "Hey, this shorting thing is working really good! Why not stick my hand back in that bucket again, and see how much I can grab this time?" so he shorted the bejeebers out of PQE, and dang if he ain't up better than 3%! Good move, Spike! I'd take my hat off to you, but it's been too cold around here lately. Some other time.

Here are today's results.

http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/8774/potw200602140fd.gif (http://imageshack.us/)
Rob, how are you calculating "'Net Gain" for people who have had multiple positions? It looks like you are just adding the two together. Ex. For you, you have (-11.29 + 1.94) = -9.35%

I think its a little misleading. If your portfolio for the week lost 11.29%, then gained 1.94% you'd be at -9.56% (NOT -9.34%)

Look at it this way: if you invested $1 and lost 11.29% you'd have $0.8871 (1*(1-.1129)). Then you invest the $0.8871 and gain 1.94% and end up with $0.9043 (0.8871*(1+.0194). Your "Net Gain/Loss" is -9.56%
(100*(0.9043/1)-1).

For NBB:
-1.71% loss then -3.46% loss:
(1-0.0171) * (1-0.0346) = 0.9489
100*(0.9489-1) = -5.11%

I know what you're saying, Scifos, and you are right, I'm simply adding the two figures together. I had this conversation with Lyehopper (or one close to it) and he said that's the way he's always done it, so that's the way I'm doing it.

Its fine, you can do it however you want. But I just thought it was weird that when someone goes into a second position you pretend there was no first position. It makes little difference, unless there are some really high % gain/loss values, and the computation is much more complex doing it the 'reinvesting way'.

It is not misleading Scifos.... Let's see. hmmmmm.... How can I explain this so a bright college boy can understand?..... OK!.... Look at it this way.... If you had $100 and you lost $10 in the stock market.... Now you've got $90 RIGHT?.... Then you go to your Mom and say "Hey Mom DUDE!!!! I need to hold $20 to invest!!!!"..... So Dear old Mom gives you a "20 spot".... Then you head to the nearest 7-11 and score a 12 pack of Bud and a large pack of peanut M&M's, a nice slim "blunt" from a buddy.... and roll on back to the dorm and check out dirty pictures in the internet for the rest of the evening. NEXT day.... you deposite the other $10 bucks back into your brokerage account and started fresh with $100.... Well that's kinda-sorta how the POTW works DUDE!!!! We all play by the same rules we all have the same chance to win (or lose) by those rules.

Now when you wanna be the scorekeeper and set the rules, just holler out!

Yeah, I know that you and now Rob are baseing the Net Gain on the idea that the player would have the same cost basis for each pick (ie add money after closing a loser or subtract money after closeing a winner). Like I said, your accounting methods are fine with me, and OF COURSE I KNOW WE ARE ALL PLAYING UNDER THE SAME RULES!

For the record, I agree that the method Scifos outlined is more "true-to-life." On the other hand, this "competition," if you want to call it that, is pretty simple and has other things that don't happen in real life either. There's not a broker on the planet who will limit you to two trades a week. And what about brokers' fees? Shouldn't the people who trade positions mid-week have a little bit deducted from their score relative to those who hold the same stock all week? In real life it costs money to sell out of one position and buy another. Etc., etc. For those reasons I also understand the way Lye approaches it, i.e. keep it simple.

The "simplified" net gain method happened to work in my favor and against New-born Baby this week. Next week it may work the other way around, and in the end it all basically washes. The bottom line is it's all about finding profitable stocks to trade and having a little fun while we're at it. As a relative newbie here, I'm just trying to go with the flow.

IMCL was bilgey after that fine pop; it didn't even hit the price resistance! What's up with that! That was not very uncharacteristic for this stock, and investors in this company have had to develop gastro-inteninal tracts made of cold-rolled steel in order to stay in. I've traded in and out of this company a few times over the past two years since Erbitux was first approved by the FDA for refractory colorectal cancer. I've even been short on it at times, getting back some of what I lost on it inititally. Imclone's biggest problem is a management and B.O.D. who are much better at science than they are at romancing Wall St. Generally speaking the street hates this company, but they can't ignore the fact that Erbitux is gaining market share and about to break into other indications, including Head & Neck cancer, for which the FDA granted "priority review" status and is due to render their decision any time on or before March 1. Some of the future indications which are currently in late-stage clinical trials include lung, pancreas, and earlier stage colorectal. There is compelling evidence that it will eventually come to used as a part of a "cocktail" mixture with DNA's Avastin, greatly extending the lives of colorectal cancer patients. It's a great drug with a somewhat lackluster management team. Their C.E.O. resigned in November, and they're currently fishing for a new one. The pop yesterday was due to a filing by Carl Ichan, disclosing that he's controlling a 9.8% stake and is changing his status from "passive" to "active," and that he's going to start leaning on the company to unlock the value for the shareholders. A possible takeover at $55 or more is a very real prospect at this point.

To Spike, or Ski, or whomever may know ...

I've spent a little time trying to figure out how to get that backfill feature of the Medved software to work. I see that most of the services, including prophet, require a subscription or a registration. The only company I have an account with for now is Ameritrade. According to the help screens on Medved, if you set the backfill source to default, it will automatically use the company you've specified for streaming info., but I haven't been able to get it working. I select the backfill tool on a certain issue, and a little yellow box pops up telling me it's backfilling, but it never does. I let it run in the background about twenty minutes yesterday, and it still never did anything. Any idea what I'm missing? Thanks.

Rob I know what happened you stole the wrong dart therefore leaving me the wrong dart so you caused all this trouble now you want to blame It on me when It was all your fault, If you would have asked me I would have given you a dart and would not have thrown the wrong dart and then I would not have Lye telling me my darts are all screwed up and causing me to start drinking beer to early In the day and hearing the wrong thing about stocks and causing me to throw the wrong darts at the wrong stocks when you throw the wrong darts or throw them at the wrong stocks these things happen, now In the future just ask me for a dart.Anyway you are the cause of this whole disaster and Ski told me not to get mixed up with Lye,s juice but I would like to try It and see If I then could throw the dart better when someone steals the right dart and causes me to throw the wrong dart. Remember that song by Tony Joe White? Well I reckon ol' Poke Salad Annie never met up with Gatorman! This gator is on a tear this week and making the rest of us look like a bunch of silly girly-men!

But wait! What's that ferocious-looking creature wading out into that swamp trying to grab the Gatorman by the tail? Why it's Shadow!!! Shadow has emerged from the shadows to establish a very respectable 2nd place!!! Way to go Shadow. How did he/she do it? ..... The Shadow knows!

Still not to be overlooked in a healthy 3rd is Karel!! And let's see, what was Karel's pick again this week? Why it's CMCO! What a surprise! Ol' Karel's riding high atop that never-ending CMCO wave.

Close behind is Spike with that short strategy he's got goin' on. And me, if'n it won't for that durned VECO pick that Ray says is my fault, I'd be right there a tusslin' with Spike for 4th place.

Well what can we learn from the proceedings so far this week? (1) Stay away from Ray darts, and (2) Stay away from stocks with 3 letters in their tickers and that start with C and end with K!
