Hey Greb, You takin that long or short dude?
Webs,
Nothing directed at you or anyone. Just much easier to get a larger % gain on the under $5 and lower stocks in my opinion. Just my feelings and no big one way or another. I do feel that it is a strategy to get the larger % gain an if you own them it's great. Takes alot less to move to a much larger % gain with the cheaper ones than with one over $15 or $20. I just feel that raising the limit to $5 an above would make it that much more interesting or even to $10 an above. Try it out and compare the % gains to previous weeks.
That's true...but there's also a better chance of getting slaughtered on the low priced ones...Doug(IIC)

Geez Lye...So many rules.
Also, I would like to voice my objection...the first week should count...the market doesn't stop because someone is on vacation...And anyway...who takes vacation this week anyway again?
Also...I think you meant 1/09...not 12/09.
And also...she is not my girlfriend.
And also again...since you are going with "Cash"...I'm going with First Cash...FCFS long this week...although I'm not interested in possibly buying it unless it cracks 30...Happy New Year...Doug(IIC)
Yes IIC.... BUT.... they are very simple rules. I could have made just one long complicated rule but I opted for 10 simple ones.lol And just wait till Spike and Ski get through advising me dude!!! We'll have to offer a instructional video or something like that.lol
yes.... I meant Jan not Dec.... my mind should clear up by mid spring.
yeah!.... SSSSURE she ain't Doug.... wink wink.
Hey I'm not going with the stock (ticker) "CASH".... I'm going into "cash" you know as in a cash position.... I now refer you to the 10 simple rules again.hehehe.... You can pick cash as your opening position now and be entered!.... So now you can just sit in cash till your FCFS shows it can break resistance and hits $30 Doug. Cool huh? Hey!!! and you can always short sell it if that SHS fully develops.
btw... thanks IIC, you're-da-best dude....

Maybe we should think about this as a (3-months, for instance) daily average dollar volume criteria to be used as an entry in the POTW. Such as a $1M daily dollar volume minimum criteria.
I personally think the sub-$5 stocks are a pipe dream as a pick for a "portfolio" and even in many cases as a trading play. As a for instance, Spike's winner BEL traded a whopping 500 shares total in the first couple of hours last Friday. This is not a security where one can take a significant trading position ($10K, for instance) without moving the market in that stock that day. So the POTW might be serving only as an academic exercise that has little usefulness in the real world.

Good point Park.... Thus the #5 Rule.

Ya, I agree that BEL's volume is very low. I'd pumped myself up so much with that write up that I just HAD to pick it! And I sometimes feel the way ski does about the cheapies. I'd be happy with minimum rule and volume rule. Whatever is going to make everyone happy.
New_born...I have feeling you are correct about the market. It could get ugly and fast this week. I probably should be shorting in POTW.

I noticed several under $10 stocks on the list and checked their daily dollar volume. My method was (I used finance.yahoo.com):
1. Check the three month average daily volume
2. Check the lowest price over the last three months
3. Use these two numbers to compute a "daily dollar volume"
A possible objection could be that the price in the last three months has appreciated noticeably, but this rather proves the point than undermines it. For the sub-$10 stocks on the list, this means:
Ticker - avg vol 3m - lowest price 3m - $$$ volume
DDD - 137K - 3.77 - $516K
LINKE - 99K - 2.10 - $208K (E: Delinquent in required filings with the SEC)
NOVA - 43K - 6.00 - $252K
RGEN - 322K - 2.87 - $924K
RWC - 590K - 4.75 - $2803K
SKIL - 240K - 3.87 - $929K
It is my personal opinion that these stocks are more in the nature of happy-go-lucky (ttp://www.thefreedictionary.com/happy-go-lucky) stocks than that they are serious picks. I could be mistaken. But I think that stocks like these need a good fundamental story to be acceptable, if you want to give them a chance at all.
BTW: someone countered an argument against very volatile stocks by stating that the risk of loosing big was also present, so for the competition things would cancel out. But again, this was precisely the point of the objection: we want to win by picking stocks smartly, not by just raising the stakes. I might add that with very volatile stocks the "random walk" effect just kicks in stronger, so it might seem that some stock picker is really very good, while in reality that person has just scored a lucky break.
I wish everyone a lucky break, but I don't think that this is what Lye intended with this competition.
Regards,
Karel

Different tune: last week CMCO opened way up over the previous close, causing me a loss in the POTW and a gain in my own portfolio. Now it opened way down, so I am looking at a loss in my real money portfolio and am in the green in the POTW. So things just cancel out :)
And the POTW didn't do very well, really: up .6% on a day the markets really roared... I mean: was there an index that scored less than 1%?

I would have suggested to first take the "avg. price" (avg. of lowest price and highest price during the 3 months) over the 3 months then multiply by the 3-mo avg daily volume. This way of deriving an avg is admittedly rough. An alternative could be to take the stock's current 90-day (3 month) exponential moving average as the "avg" price.

Remember Karel this is a game first and foremost. It's supposed to be fun. The POTW is a weekly contest not a "index".... Don't think you understand my "H" factor experiment. Go back and study my thread. Portfolio management will be the success of the "H" factor experiment not the direct POTW overall averages. And the manager (me) is still workin on the "system"..... 3 (DDD, RGEN, and SKIL) of these are breakout plays. That's a valid strategy for a stock of any price.
Regarding a minimum 90-day avg daily dollar volume, maybe $500K is a useful number. In a previous post I had suggested $1M. My point there is that the stock's daily trade should support one's taking a significant position ($10K) without moving the stock's market.
Karel didn't publish the 3-month volatility numbers for any of these, so what are we talking here?

Well, there was some talk about avoiding thinly traded stocks and I decided to get down to cases. I also wanted to use as few calculations as possible, in case Lye wants to implement something like this. Volatility calculations are out then, I think. Lowest price is easy and severe enough to my taste. And I mentioned "fundamental story" to allow even this kind of stock. I don't think a technical story is enough. Of course it can be enough to justify the play, but I was talking about justifying the stock. If you see what I mean. But it all depends on whether Lye really wants a check like this, then we can start to bicker about details.

KarelWell, it seems you're finding the competition between your fund and POTW (and your winning) the fun part. And hey, if you need the POTW competition to inspire you to put more attention into your own ports, fine.....but maybe you'd get more out of it if you picked a system that was genuinely a refined and successful product/system and try to match that.....oh, but it's not so fun to compare oneself to a winning system is it??? ....there's just no satisfaction....
Hey, I'm pretty easy going and like a good competition, but little stabs and patting yourself on the back seems a bit juvenile to me, and really not in the spirit of the board (i.e. we all liking to root for each other). Forgive me if I'm way off base here, and perhaps I'm just grumpy, but it's getting on my nerves karel. I think Lye's doin' a great job scorekeeping and trying to motivate everyone to play a game that can be fun just by participating. Lye has high expectations and can see the potential of the H factor and putting it into some 'system', and that's creativity and inspirational, even if it isn't worthy in your eyes. I think any comments you make should bear all that in mind instead of selfishly getting glory out of what I'd equate to a bully pickin' on someone who ain't growd up yet :D

spike, I think there are two things here: me pulling Lye's leg for his enthousiasm for a good day for the POTW (and a better day for the markets), and my genuine disappointment that the POTW, even without the H factor, doesn't do better. Perhaps that is also behind my hints against "Hail Mary" picks: I don't think they do the POTW much good. They might even spoil Lye's H factor, more is the trouble. I hope Lye knows that he has all my respect for keeping the POTW bubbling, and in case he doesn't <deep bow>I hope he does now</deep bow>.

What happen to rule number 5???????????
I think since I am so new to the game and new to the trading business itself that number 5 of the old rules should be reinstated!
If I admitted that it was me diving off the Morgan, will that give any weight to rule number 5??????
Sorry Sis.... Rule number "five" was in the 2005 POTW. This is a new year and we've got a new set of 2006 rules.... and since I've decided that you are actually a pretty good stock picker.... I see no need to offer you bonus points for "skinny dipping" pictures any more.... But HEY!.... don't let that stop you from posting the pictures. Afterall we're all friends here!

Now we're rollin fellas.... the Portfolio (combined) is up 1.94% for the week. That's two days! Man I hope this rally has real legs!
Well my buddy Pete is kickin some butt with his LINKE short. Nice call big PETE!!!!
I (Lyehopper) am in 2nd with my fave ECOL...
And our "mechanical" pal Karel's in 3rd with his same-ol-same-ol pick CMCO. Great stock Karel!.... Skiracer is nippin at his heels with PETS.
Speakin of nippin at the heels. I have an Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler)that is my "side kick". She's sleeping on my feet right now as a matter of fact. Before her though I had a male named Jack (he died @ 15 yrs old back in 2000) Now Jack was an alcoholic cattle dog to say the least. He was fearless too. I've seen him face down (head to head) a 1,500 pound bull and as the bull lowered his head ol Jack would bite him on the forehead then run around behind him and bite his heels. Jack would have that bull so confused he could put him anywhere he wanted.... I'd laugh my ass off at that dog. Well once I was cookin a big fat steak on the grill and I was drinkin some Japanese Sake a buddy had given me. The Sake was in little cartons like juicy-juice comes in.lol I poked the little straw in the Sake carton and it squirted out all over the patio. Well Jack promptly licked it up and begged for more.... Well.... he was my bud, what was I supposed to do?.... I poured him a bowl of the stuff and he lapped it up pronto. To make a long story short.... Jack got drunk off his ass that night and I laughed and laughed at that stupid dog. My wife got really pissed at me that night.... but Jack didn't care, he liked to get drunk.... Well it's 2:00 Am again and I gotta get up early so here's the score card fellas! Give-em-hell tomorrow!.... uhhhh I mean today!!!!

I'm torn between PETS which I bought last week, ELN which I bought Friday, and HOM which I think is getting ready to setup for another move up. I was somewhat disappointed with PETS and ELN on Friday. Thought both were going off but the market pushed them both back down late in the day after nice intraday runs up.

Pete: amazing result! Double digits! And Photon, I thought the 2nd place was secure, but forgot to look over my shoulder! Or were you in front already? And Lye, PARL was a nice pick!
According to my system, holding this kind of stock will pay off over time, but in my own portfolio I am still in the red with CMCO. But after such a week it can't have fallen of the screen, and it didn't, so CMCO stays in. In my own port and in the POTW. But if you want to know whether the POTW beat my mechanical fund, you'll have to look up that thread! But I am starting to think you really need that H factor, and not just any old H factor too!

Grebnet,
You need your own thread , but I think I'll find you here. Do you keep separate track of your sub $10 stocks to see the result over a years time period? From your past posts it looks as if you often hold them for a long time. I've got a theory that if IBD canslim stocks are already over the hill and picked based on hindsight, low priced high quality stocks could eliminate many of these problems. I'm going to slowly build a portfolio of under $10 selections and try to hold them for a year at least. One problem would be increased volatility with these. Figuring out stops will be difficult since rules that apply to higher priced picks might eliminate potential doubles or triples at low prices. Just was curious as you seem to have a longer track record on these than most on this forum. Thanks

Ive toyed with running a thread......not yet
I do all of my trading thru Schwab and keep track of stocks on Yahoo where I enter date /price and source of info . I rarely hold stocks for a year. I regularly take profits . If I still like a stock as it is pulling back, I add to it ( I know there are those who say you shouldnt.).
I regularly read quarterly financial statements for discussion of prior and future quarter projections. I eliminate any stock that has guided lower , and stocks that do not have qtr over qtr ( same qtr year to year not consecutive qtrs.) growth . I also want low debt and not growing debt. The majority of my stocks have positive earnings and reasonable p/e to growth...
I agree that <$10 stocks are subject to swings and therefore I dont use stops. My trading system is not very sophisticated... I rely on my "gut" feeling and screening criteria that I like.
I have done very well for 2 years now , but will not consider that I know what Im doing until it works for 5 straight years.
If you are running an experiment of sub $10 stocks , you might see if can set up a stock screen ie at MSN and run that screen regularly selling stocks that fall off the screen. Problem with screen in this category is there is little analyst coverage so you have to avoid criteria that require analyst input ( ie upgrades/downgrades..earnings estimates.. ...)
I dont know if this answers your questions ???

Might be worth it to sell em small with those prices. that's $630 for a 385 pound steer! it's funny but a 700 pound #2 steer is only bringing $1.05 per pound, and it takes a lot of feed thru the winter to get em to 700 pounds too. Go figure?

Sorry fellas my schedule is nuts right now plus I have a denist appointment this afternoon at 2:30. When the woman from the denist office called me this morning to remind me of the appointment, I asked her if she knew that 2:30 was the time the "Chinaman" went to the denist..... She said "excuse me"?..... I said (in my best Chinaman's accent) "yeah! Chinaman go to denist when tooth-hurty".LOL get it 2:30.... tooth-hurty.....harharhar!!!! I think it's strange that she didn't really laugh.lol.... I thought it was very funny myself. I hope she's not the one who cleans my teeth, she'll probably try to hurt me or something.

Hey Lye,
I posted my HSVLY buy at 12:18 pm on 1/9. The prices at that time ran between

Sorry Tim.... My mistake dude. Here's what happened.... I make a list in order of each players post.... Your post was third this week and was a cash pick. So I recorded you third on the list in "cash" then as I worked through the list down to Monday (after the open) I start to list the actual time of the posts. When you traded from cash into HSVLY I didn't move you to the bottom of the list and record the post time. I just erased "cash" and wrote down the pick and forgot to record the time.... So later when I figured the score I entered you at the opening price Monday. I'll fix it tonight. You finished Tuesday @ + 4.34% between Ray and DMK (8th place).

My wife can cook up a pretty good squirrel for breakfast. She quarters it, parboils it, rolls it in seasoned flour, fries it up golden brown in butter and olive oil.... then makes a gravey (my mothers recipe) serves it with fresh homemade buttermilk biscuits and a pot of hot black coffee....mmmmmmmm!!!! NOOOOO! I never marinate a fine cut of beef, that's unthinkable! I like to taste the beef.... The key is to buy a quality steak first of all. I like mine a little rotten.lol I like good marbling.... Angus or SimAngus cross (just my preference).... The steer should be finished off to about 1,200 pounds on good corn and/or corn silage.... The side (or loin) should be dry aged around three weeks @ about 36-38 degrees. Now once you've picked the right steak simply grill it on a med to high flame, I put a little garlic salt and ground black pepper on each side and flip it four times altering the direction on each turn making a nice checkerd pattern on the meat..... BEAUTIFUL! medium rare with the center being red and barely warm.... mmmmmmm!!!! I like Ribeye's and T-bones but I've been eating filets for a few years now, I used to think that was a girls steak.lol.... It's hard to go back to a ribeye after eating a fine thick tender filet.

The #1 Vulcan trading rule is that you must have total self confidence. Failure is not acceptable. Therfore, you should NEVER speak about yourself in a negative way.
From this moment on, you are to be a success. Never again say, "Do losers get a prize". You are now a winner!

Looks like I am going to play with the CAT again this week.
One thing we should have learned already with POTW: it is the cheap stocks that offer the most upside per centage wise. A 5 cent move on a $60 stock isn't much, but a 5 cent move on a $1 stock is 5%.
Still, (unless I change my mind before Monday), I think I'll play with the CAT, even though I am allergic to them.

People might ask why. Well, this kind of stock tends to win. On average 6 winners, with an average gain of 12.3%, against 5 losers, with an average loss of 10%. So it really is safer to play a bunch of these stocks. See the Mechanical Fund.

Yeah, but we could have made more by shorting Lye's picks. (Don't mean to pick on you Lye, as I know you're not in last, but I think M. Mouse may have been tagged with a 5% penalty)
So why don't we start a subscription service by telling people how much they could have made on our players' picks? That's a sure moneymaker right there.
Anyway, congrats RL on the spectacular bullseyes. Keep it up!

Ok, I need to find a pick. I meant to work on it this morning, but I had a show to play last night, which kept me up late. It was a good show. We packed the house...and helped raise money for "Relay for Life".
Everything was great until I woke up with a serious sinus headache...now I'm all doped up on cold medicine. If the medicine doesn't work, I'm breaking out the apple brandy.
I do feel a better, so now I'm going to try to find a new winner for the week...

Hey Webs..... OK.... I see you did not enter a cash position. The "cash" position provision was designed to show a players "intent to play".... I can clearly see by all your posts since Sunday that you definitly intended to play the POTW this week.... So I have entered you in "cash".
Now for all other players who wish to play this week you do indeed have till the market closes on Tuesday to enter the contest.LOL........ now.... THIS MAY BE DONE BY ENTERING an initial "cash" POSITION!!!! simple? yes it is!!!! I am simple!!!! thus the POTW rules are simple.... BUT YOU HAVE TO actually READ THEM!!!!

I grew up around a lot of bluegrass. I have a cousin that's a jam up banjo picker. I'm a drummer, but I can manage basic chords on my guitar.

Yea, I used to do the headphone thing, but it was with Journey and Boston and of course, Rush, Tom Saywer. I don't enjoy it like I used to though. Burned myself out by doing it for money for too many years. It's just no fun anymore. I only play a Saturday night Opry type show, because they raise money for causes and it's family oriented. If it wasn't for that, I'd sell all my stuff and just pick the guitar around the house.

I might be huge in the POTW contest, but you are the one who made a quick grand on ELN today....with real money....while I lost a grand.

(I also could have bought near the previous close in pre-market trading.) Other contests I have played give me the Friday close instead. What do we think?
"We" think that's a bad idea.
Here's why...I happen to read tons of news over the weekend. Some of that news is gonna cause a stock to gap one way or the other...But even if it trades pre-m...it doesn't mean I can get it at about the same price pre-m on Monday that it closed on Friday.
Ever take a look at the "Morning Movers" list I post on my thread almost every market morning? 95%+ of those are gonna gap. I could simply pick the one that moves the most pre-m on Monday and then bail in the contest about 10 mins after the market opens...Not very realistic IMO.
I regularly participate in other contests every week...One does it like you say except that if there is news after the close on friday...but before the market opens on monday AND it gaps more than 5% then you get the gap price...That really doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me...but I was out voted.
Now, lets take my current holding in this contest...LIFC. Last night I was in 3rd place because I bailed on DXPE and switched to LIFC at the bottom (Or close to it)...In another contest I am in where you get the Monday open but can't change all week...Last night I was in last place.
Personally, I think Lye's contest is the most realistic of all the one's I'm in...But, since there is no monetary prize I must admit that I do my own real trades first before I come over here and change my contest pick.
To make it really realistic I say we each take 10 grand and really trade it...But I would like to see the winner get a 10 grand prize...Heck, we get 50 participants to put up 200 bux each...Trade the 10 grand however you want...Winner Take All every week...What do "We" think???...Doug(IIC)

While we're on the subject, sculptors commonly piss on bronze to give it patina. There were stories a few years ago that bells were cast in China , pissed on and buried for 30 days then shipped to the U.S. and sold as antique school bells. I believe the story.

Sometimes there is news about a stock that I picked that happens after pre-market opens but before the exchanges open. I want to be able to get credit for early knowledge without being penalized by a gap up. Of course, my pick of BRY this week is an example.
This link (Nasdaq'a own ECN) shows pre-market trades in a given stock:
http://www.nasdaq.com/aspxcontent/ExtendedTradingTrades.aspx?symbol=OXPS&selected=OXPS&mode=frameset&page=afterhours
Bus Week also has a link that shows something similar (I think it may use a different ECN).

I feel safe in my victory, unless Runner makes another pick. Of course, Gary is in RWC, and it looks poised to take off.
Your wussie quotient just went up appreciably. A Vulcan wussie, what a combination. Disgraceful! :)
Lye, this contest tends to reward a one-trade-per-week scalper. That's not the original purpose, and that's not a very realistic combination of skills to be exercising on our board. If the contest is constructed to reward scalping skills, let's allow any number of trades per week.

":But even if it trades pre-m...it doesn't mean I can get it at about the same price pre-m on Monday that it closed on Friday."
If someone IN FACT got it at a lower pre-open price, then it could've been me. That's also pretty realistic. 'Nuff said, says I.

I suggest you buy something...'Cause I've got the DT of the year that I'm gonna play tomorrow...Doug(IIC)
Wait a minute...I've already played 2 stocks...But I don't see anything in the rules that prohibits a third, fourth etc...pick.
Hey Judge...I need a ruling!!!
The rules only mention a first and second pick.... Therefore two picks is indeed the limit per week.

Webs,
Congratulations on your win if it turns out that way but in all honesty I hate this situation where anyone can sit safely in cash for a couple of days without taking any risk and then claim a win. Nothing personal but it doesn't prove anything to me but those are the rules an that's how we are playing it. Call it a win but I don't like the rule or how it allows anyone to play it.
The rules are fair because they apply equally to everyone. You have the same chance to nail down a gain and move to cash just like the next guy.... It's a good rule. Allows a player to build a strategy. What's wrong with that?
Lyehopper

Now you're talkin Doug!!!! I like "ACTION".... I'm in DUDE!!!!

FELLAS!!!! I really like this contest It was the first thread I responded to when I came here.... I'll always play reguardless of the rules.... I DO however understand that the same-old-same-old gets boring sometimes.... I would be very happy to pass the score keeping duties to another palyer at the end of January. The scorekeeper has always reserved the right to make and establish the rules in the POTW.
Anyone who wishes to take the helm of the POTW starting 02-06-06 please speak up. Of course BillyJoe owns the contest so he might have to bless the situation but that gives you plenty of time to come up with a good set of rules and discuss them with the players if desired.... Plus I'm getting more and more covered up with my various duties and responsibilities outside the $$MM$$ universe.lol.... I could use a break. We could still easily keep the points system in place with a change in scorekeepers. My vision of the "H" factor is not dead just sleeping.hehehhe.... I'll surely awaken it sometime in the future.

I think I understand, Lye. You do an excellent job, but keeping score every day really nails ones foot down. You could also consider to cut back on that: publish the opening price for every position, and then the final score. When you find you have too much time, drop in a midweek ranking, or just a rant against someone who thinks he's first.
Other timesavers, ordered from preferable to more time saved:
- allow only one stock or cash
- allow only holdings from sometime Monday through Friday close
- allow only holdings from Monday open through Friday close
I realise that the last two and especially the last hurt TAers much more than a B&H type like me, but for me it's like "whatever it takes to salvage the POTW".

Lye,
You do a great job and deserve a rest. I could not do it -- heck, I only have a couple hundred posts since we came to this site.
Here is a suggestion:
What if we create a “spreadsheet” in cyberspace that is accessible to all players. Each
player enters their own trades, max 2. Modify the rules so that a person can buy/sell on a Friday close (or last trading day of the week) for the “next” weekly contest.
When the contest is over, one person goes back and checks the opening and closing transaction prices for accuracy, then posts that the contest has been audited. Each person can look at the spreadsheet to see how they did.
Regarding OIH 144.90 versus 144.60, I believe the rules use the opening price, not the bid and ask price, isn’t that correct?

And this week the POTW beat my Mechanical Fund! Congratulations Lye and all! But with 8-2 there is still some catching up to do! Have at it!
I'm am afraid there is more incentive to protect gains, especially at the top of the rankings, than to cut losses. This drags the POTW down. (And your own average, I might add.) Play the POTW as if it were your own money, folks! You are here to win, if not first place, then at least that green average!
And Lye, I confirm CMCO long!

Karel your right on, thought this was a stock picking contest?
Well, I am pathologically long, dutifully following $$$Mr.Market$$$'s "Every day there are hundreds of stocks setting new highs, no matter what happens in the overall market." Of course everyone has a right to start in cash, or go to cash to protect gains, I am not whining about it, but they ARE wimps, even if they win :D

Seems many are not happy with the rules of this game….hhhee My personnel plan was not to win this thing guys and in all honesty I really could care less. My goal for this game was to achieve 5% per week, that’s it.
I thought I was within the boundaries or parameters of the rules. That is ok as I see the general tone of popping in and out of a position is considered poor sportsmanship. We can’t have that and so having reviewed several comments I will ban myself from the game. After all it is a game and so it really does not matter. As we all know it is what happens in our own account that matters.
Best wishes for all contestants and maybe the rules will be changed in such a manner as to please everyone evolved. Maybe the winner will be titled the huge one and gets a pat on the back.
Lye, put me in cash for the rest of the year!!

Webs,
Mr.Market may be HUGE , but you are a GIANT in the POTW. 7 victories makes you #1 of all time. There's no pressure on me since I'm not a contender, but Jiesen and Doug, get it in gear. Webs victories are adding up with increasing frequency. I'm rooting for you guys. Ray and Ski , don't just lay around drinking beer and watching the tube, lets go. Could you look deep into the POTW rulebook and see what is written about medical leave? I'm going to be gone for I don't know how long. If it is permitted I'll enter 3 stocks in advance one for each of the next 3 weeks. If not, how about in cash until further notice?
The good news, when I return I'll be bionic: carbon chrome alloy and stainless steel, ready to battle the Vulcan. It'll be bigger than Godzilla vs. Rodan. Awaiting your ruling.

Karel... Come on dude! Why are you so boring? You must see the advantage of the cash provision. It allows a player to build a strategy, much like real life investing.
If your strategy is buy and hold.... Then.... buy and hold.
If your strategy is to.... go into cash and stalk a stock on the move.... buy it then sell it four hours later.... then go back to cash for two days.... then stalk a stock short.... then move back to cash... Then you are allowed to do that!!!!
Every player has the same chance since we all have the same rules.
It's a good contest.... thus the ever increasing participation.
I've yet to have anyone offer to take over as scorekeeper yet.... How about you Karel? Will you take the contest over in February? If you do.... you can make it as boring as you'd like, and I won't complain.

Weeeeell Scifos.... We did not count the first week, it was a "test week", so you're safe there.... Two weeks penality is in question here.
Now.... I might (sometimes) enter a player who does not want to play.... But I'll never assume a player actually wants to play.
The cash provision was designed to show a player's "intent to play".... A player MUST make "some sort of" effort to be entered into ca$h or a stock each week. If he does so.... he will avoid the 5% points race penality.
Here's what I'll do.... You give me a very GOOD reason why you have missed the contest for the past three weeks and I'll make a ruling. NOW....If it was because you were off protesting gun laws down in Florida?.... you're screwed dude!....LOL

Now.... I might (sometimes) enter a player who does not want to play.... But I'll never assume a player actually wants to play.
If you aren't assuming a player wants to play then why would I be penalized for the weeks I missed. You would be assuming I wanted to play those weeks. If someone enters the contest on , say the second week of July, are you going to penalize them for the 25 or so weeks of 2006 he didn't play? If I remember right, the contest was restarted at the beginning of January, so just because I played last year doesn't mean you should assume I was going to play this year.
The cash provision was designed to show a player's "intent to play"
I thought it was to allow players to implement their own stratigy, be it buy and hold or stalking a quick play.
A player MUST make "some sort of" effort to be entered into ca$h or a stock each week. Why must a player show effort. I disagree with you here, I think a player (if you are going to assume I'm playing at all and will then count the weeks I've missed) who doesn't make a pick should be assumed to be in cash.
If it was because you were off protesting gun laws down in Florida?.... you're screwed dude!....LOL

I'm interested Park...I have ideas of how to run the contest too...But let's face it...Being scorekeeper is not a "Paying" job. I don't know about you...But I co-mod 2 small groups...Guess I'm still the moderator of Yahoo CSSP(Over 1600) since I didn't delete the group yet and I Mod Breakouts which consisted of over 300 Canslimmers who got tired of me posting all my Daytrade stuff...so that group is dead too.
I will admit...I've met a lot of good people over the years because I moderated groups...Most come and go...But I have met over 60 people in person that I originally met from stock groups...Some I still trade ideas with...Some are true friends.
Anyway, the contest is fun...Doesn't mean the best trader/investor in real life is the winner of the contest...The contest is just to share ideas IMO. I personally check out certain people's pix...I believe that is what it is really all about...Just to share ideas...So IMO...It really doesn't matter what the rules are...And yes...you are one of the people I pay attention to...Best, Doug(IIC)

Well if you were incapacitated by being in the hospital, out of town due to a family death or illness, called away for armed service duty, or any number of situations where there was a really strong reason for missing the POTW for those weeks then you should be granted recourse for missing. But we all know the rules an Lye set them up and we have to live with them. But my own feelings would be that there are extenuating circumstances that would dictate excusing the rules. So that's why I asked. The penalty exists to keep people in the game, maintain the number of players every week so as to keep the final percentages on an even playing field by everyone playing the same number of weeks, etc.. Lye also included a cash position so that anyone could stay in cash for any period of time during the week without holding a stock just so that anyone would be considered as in that week but wouldn't have to actually be holding a position.
I was just curious as to the reason for not playing. Would it be fair for you to have your final % figured on 49 wks. an everyone else's on 52 wks. You know what I'm getting at. But if the reasons were strong enough then you should be exempted from the penalty for those two weeks but not otherwise.

Karel, maybe we should open a new thread for "POTW, Rules Discussion" I have a few more things to add, if anyone is interested.
I think the best place to discuss the rules is over here. But before you start giving suggestions, ask yourself if they are real improvements, not just more to your liking, and whether they don't cost too much work. Because I am completely with Doug on this one. This is Lye's baby, he makes the rules. That doesn't place the rules above discussion, but they are not too bad as they are. The 5% penalty looks silly, but an "I am in cash" post is easy, and an "I am in cash/XYZ the next three weeks" is easy too. Lye even seems inclined to waive the rule when people miss the contest for idealistic reasons, like protesting the Florida gun laws, if I read correctly. <ducks and runs>

I'd like to know, if someone enters the contest in the middle of the year, will they be penalized 5% for the multitude of weeks they didn't play? Why assume I'd start to play at some point in 2006 and assess a penalty until I entered a pick?
I'll tell you right now, there's no way I'm going to be entering a pick each week, and when I'm not playing, I'm not going to waste my time posting "$Cash$" to the thread. And I won't complain if you penalize me for weeks I miss AFTER I ENTER THE CONTEST (except for the complaint that a cash position should be assumed, but IIC is right, rules are rules and no matter why the rule exists, it still does), but but penalizing me for weeks of the contest before I've even entered the contest isn't fair.
People want to know my reasons for not entering the contest on Jan 1. I'm intentionally not answering that because IT DOES NOT MATTER. The reasons why I shouldn't be penalized are good ones, and they don't rely on why I started late.

None of it means anything if you don't own the stocks and you win or end up in the green for the week. No one gives any explanation or analysis of the why behind their plays so who is learning anything from any of it. It's a game an it's for fun, especially if you win. Personally I hate to win when I don't own the stock or even end up in the green if I don't own it. But it is fun and Lye has built it into something special with the friendly competition and the number of players.

Oh yeah, BTW, I don't mean to go off topic but my desktop crashed over the weekend & I need to get a motherboard, anyone know of a good reputable website to go to?
Thanks in advance,
GaryGary, agree with billyjoe. www.Newegg.com is awesome (but pay for Fedex over the cheaper UPS). Next best is www.zipzoomfly.com (http://www.zipzoomfly.com). I've bought loads of PC stuff from both of em and they rock.

Hey Fellas.... You'll notice that I did not post the score for Monday.... Due to my busy schedule right now I will only be posting the scorecard for Wednesday's and Friday's.... By cutting back like this I may be able to continue keeping score.
I still offer the duties to anyone who would like to give it a shot. My goal however is to continue to improve and grow the contest so my employer BillyJoe will be pleased when he returns in a few weeks.... If I can average 25 players 4 weeks running I will have reached my 1st qtr participation quota.... Then I'll be bucking for a big raise when we have the 1st quarter POTW board meeting.
Due to my busy schedule right now I will only be posting the scorecard for Wednesday's and Friday's.

No I don't use Excel bud.... You know how computor-stupid I am.... I just use the V-V portfolio tracker, I modified the fields and enter (1) one share for each player (long or short) and just track the % ROE.... Then hit the "Prt Sc" button then paste and trim in MS Paint then manually add the players prior picks (if any) and cash positions (if any) then post the (MS Paint) image to imageshack.com.... Scroll back a few pages and you can see what one of my scorecards looks like.
That would be COOL if you could create a program for the POTW! You are the HUUUUUGEST computor dude I know! If Rocker-Rob can't do it.... It can't be done.

I have some excel macros to fetch O-H-L-C and Volume data from Yahoo Finance, but its all EOD, so it wouldn't be useful if people are moving in/out of stocks during the day. I'd also be a snap to calculate %returns and keep track of your points race, however you figure that up.

My ultimate goal is to master the Vulcan methodology and thus understand the "wisdom" and become a true VulcanTrader.... As I continue as a student of the Vulcan I notice these underlying principles and personality traits that may help me in my quest.... One thing I find so remarkable about your Vulcan MO is how compassionate you are. You knew full well what CAL's price would do this week.... Yet rather than using the "ca$h" position provision and wait to enter CAL (short) at the peak TOMORROW.... You entered at the open yesterday..... KNOWING full well you would win by a lesser margin than you COULD have had you utilized the POTW (fair and balanced) rules to the full..... Incredable! You want to win.... YET you desire that the other players feel they actually have a chance. Please explain how this masked kindness fits into your plan of ultimate success Vulcan?
Rocker-Rob.... Your Avatar is HUUUUGE dude!!!!!!!lolI know! The Hulk was my favorite comic when I was a kid! Anyway, that's the one I created when I first joined this board. Then after an extended absence I came back and discovered I had no avatar but that it was available as one of the choices on the User CP page. I also noticed some of the others' avatars in there too. So I just re-assumed that which I (and Marvel Comics) made in the first place.

Anyhow, on that scorecard I noticed that you have two figures in some of the rows in the Gain/Share column, which obviously show a mid-week change, and it looks like those rows are ranked based on the combination of those figures. There's got to be an easier way to handle that. I will try to find some time to monkey around with it and see if I can automate some of the more tedious functions, although abundant free time is not a luxury I'm enjoying at the present time.

I was thinking I might be able to tailor something specific to the contest, something that would minimize the amount of figures that have to be manually plugged in—although as you point out some of them will have to be, i.e. mid-day changes, etc.

Webs, this is the second day you predicted CAL would tank and so far, it has not. Are you using TA or FA to make this prediction and what are you looking at that brings you to your conclusion?
It does look like it's in trouble. It retraced 50% of the drop since the 1/6 - 1/9 tweezer top and the volume on the way back up has been around ADV, unlike the heavier volume on the way down. I also see that today's volume was the second heaviest of the week and today's price stalled at the 20-day EMA. A failure to get back above this EMA is bearish.

Inevitably. Has to tomorrow is the last day of the week an if it doesn't and you don't win the sky will fall in and we'll all die. And then GM won't have to worry about any pensions. They might just pay CAL not to drop and the sky will fall. We're all doomed.
