Boy that was a long term hold. 3 days and +3.70. You should give up the daytrading and concentrate on the short term swing trades. Nice job.

That's a 3.75 pound per year average increase.... or 1.88% average annual growth. Now that's nothing compared to BOOM this week.... but that does put me weighing in at a "healthy" 440 pounds on my 82nd birthday! Hey after I hit 82 I'll throw a Lyehopper weighs 440 pounds party at my place! For those of you bad with math, I'll be specific.... thats November, 1st weekend 2045.... COME-ONE-COME-ALL!!!!.... Lye,
I snagged a keeper this morning at around 5am in the Lavallette, NJ surf. 32" and 12 1/2 lbs. on a black bomber swimming plug. Nothing like pulling one out of the surf when it's pitch black and you really can't tell what's on the other end of the line. Tomorrow's my birthday and he's going to be dinner. The action is picking up real good now with the cooler weather coming on. I have a buddy who free lines live eels from his center console on what we call the sod banks in the Barnegat Bay. He's caught about two dozen already but he fishes every morning and night.

Jiesen,
Nice pick but wished I owned it. Missed the entry on Thursday when it was around $5.35 range. Then today waiting for it to pull back to $5.50 range but there I was wishing in one hand and shitting in the other an seeing which one fills up first. Same with VPHM. Saw the earnings report early in the pre-market but it was too late by the time the markets opened an it had gone off. We'll see how AOB holds up over the week. Maybe we'll get a pullback but I would be surprised. I think AOB will be a big one over the long run. VPHM has already proven itself to be a big one from the $5/6 range. Weren't you the first one to mention it here. Now that was a nice play from that initial price.

Nope, I wish I could take credit for that one, but someone else (NBB or Webs?) brought VPHM to the table. I remember talking about it, and maybe giving a thumbs up around 12 or so but I never did buy it, since I never could get a good enough grasp of it to put my money in it... maybe because my attention span was too short. My latest pick was AMLN, which, while making me money, pales in comparison:

Spike...OK...Stops...Are they in effect A/H? I rarely use them...Main reasons are because of the Naz bid thing...which I've been burned on and the morning gap on news which normally sees a stock pop up at least some???You have to specifically instruct your broker to make them in effect. With IB there is a box you must check within TWS regarding stop orders that will make them active AH. Then they work normally and according to your instructions and price action, meaning if you use a market order you can suffer serious slippage if the volume is low, or if you use a limit order you may miss the exit completely if it drops fast. With NTES, there was up to 8 points (or 10%) of slippage with a market order, and it then got more volume bidding. 10% hurts, sure, but it's better than if you hold it and it opens at the gap fill -24% or worse.

AARRGGGGGGGG!!!!!Yup, you did. Ahh well, rack it up to a learning experience and apply stricter discipline next time. Right now you're all about damage control, so whether you average in, take your pain, whatever, but make your plan and stick to it.
For all you stop-users, and the experienced traders should know this, but actually entering the stop into the system helps you follow your discipline, as opposed to using 'mental stops', which leaves you the option of compromising your mental stop.
It's MUCH harder to enter a stop during the pain than when you first make the plan. When you enter with order, that's when you put in your downside stop and upside target. Then if you're going to compromise a stop you have to actually delete the order, which is harder to do/more symbolic of breaking a rule than failing to enter a stop during a selloff.

BillyJoe was just using GoJi doubletalk. He said; if I'd simply change the color of his score from "red to green" he'd (then) be in 1st place.... Ski you got the gold as of now....
Remember this: you've really gotta carefully read BillyJoe's "fine print" sometimes. He'll get you all confused and disoriented... That's why he's my GoJi Conciliari.

Thanks Jiesen but it wasn't the win I was looking for. I hated missing the boat on AOB at the lower end of $5. Thought for sure it would pullback for a respectable entry but no cigar and was left waiting on the dock while the ship sailed out. I usually like to own my picks for the contest. It makes it that much sweeter.

Don't feel too bad about AOB. Maybe it's not going to correct for a long time. I suppose many of todays top stocks were at AOB level when they took off and never looked back. I'm considering buying it after my research showed it to be top notch in many categories.

Earnings is on Monday for AOB, plus it's looking like they may dilute the stock. I wouldn't want to buy again, just yet.

The second one was MOT which I already own. I think that if the market stays as strong this week as last week we'll see new 52 wk. highs for MOT. It it breaks the $23.85/90 range it will clear resistance and could go off from there. Haven't decided yet but I think it will be my play this week. For all new players I'll post the rules again.... These rules are very simple. There is no need to post stops or limits. I'm keeping the score as simplified as I can for many reasons.
Rules for the POTW....
(1) Pick one great stock .... NO bb Picks!
(2) submit the pick any ol time before the market close on Monday.... SHORT or LONG!
(3) If you submit the pick pre-market you will be entered at the "open" price.
If you submit (during market hours) on Monday the "current pricing" will be used (as of your post time) Note: Ask price will be used for long trades.... bid price will be used for short trades.
(4) You must hold the same pick all week long.... So please pick responsibly.lol
Goal is to WIN.... But.... Win by picking good, solid movers that return 5%+ within the week they are played (long or short).... please DO NOT play volitile "Hail Mary" Gambles, they'll just screw up your longterm score.
Your score will be tallied and kept with a points system much like NASCAR. You don't need to win 1st place to be the "champ" but you must be CONSISTANT!
This exercise should help all here improve their skills.

Dont worry you will not discourage me. You forgot the part about selling portable power off a barge to the Dominican Republic. I was unaware of the line of business to get the Bulgarians drunk but it may be a good one. Life seems to be improving in eastern europe, maybe they will have money to buy good booze now.

Well I know Mr. Market has ability to find good POTW candidates. I recall he posted months ago about some lower volume stocks he was holding options for, and some of them made some very impressive moves, and had really bullish charts.
How about it MM! Throw Lye a bone :D

Great chart, you must have a lotta time on your hands! I am recently retired & looking for something to pass some time during the day, am thinking of trying my hand with some day trading, using about 5G to start. Any suggestions out there for programs or methods besides the $$MM$$ moneymaking machine?? I almost always use IBD for final decisons when pulling the switch, it has been good for me in the long run. It would seem that in day trading, you would need quicker info to buy & sell something every day.
Good luck to all!!

Hey Lye,
Thanks for the update and all of your work on this thread.
For those who clicked on the link to see Monday’s results, Spike’s SCOTC is post number 5048 in the thread named “Spike’s Scientific Stock Analysis”.
Also, the rules for this thread can be found in post 2111.
Lye, you wrote: “Lets have some fun this week and hopefully devise a method to make a lot more money in the future.”
I am more of an intermediate term investor, so this short term stuff and the terminology are somewhat foreign to me. I love Spike and his picks, but I sometimes get lost in all of the technical jargon. It would be nice to understand the scientific definition of a double top or a triple bottom, or all of the different channel lingo. Hopefully this can be defined in terms of open-high-low-close versus just “looking” at a chart and guessing the direction. If we are going to devise a method to make money, I think we need a 1-2-3 etc …. set of rules. What do you think?
Here is a link to the McClellan Oscillator for anyone interested.

Lye,
Yes 18 contestants is a record and a tribute to your recruiting abilities even if your methods are illegal in 22 states.
Spikes ability to pick the #1 stock out of the dump is amazing , but not without precedent in the history of the POTW. In the early days one contest contained 2 of the top 5 and 3 of the top 10 gainers by % and volume in the stocks tracked by a site we aren't permitted by threat of legal action to speak of. Although the same 100 or so stocks keep popping up on many investment sites again and again and these tend to produce some of the biggest gainers it's still impressive to pick the "superstock" as Spike would call it.

Hey Tim.... Check out Spike's thread, starting with post #5199.... These are negative growth stocks. I sorted them by RV (Relative Value) lowest listed first. Then I resorted them by GRT (growth rate) lowest listed first.... Removed the drug stocks and newer issues and came up with the top five.
Another good short search is to find highly over-hyped stocks that run fast and continue to run up as volume declines. As they start looking "toppy" short the crap out of them!
Here's some homework for you (and anyone else interested).... Find a handfull of stocks (not bb issues) that have run up lately, ones with horrible earnings but are "pounced on" by retail investors and day traders and run up with hype... LIST THEM HERE and we'll check them out.... Might make you a handsome return on the short side if you find the right ones and hit them at the right time!
An example of two I made out on recently are ENER and DSTI.... Both alternitive energy companies with poor earnings and low RV's. The fuel shortage hype drove them up too far too fast. They came onto my short radar and I watched them.... stalked them like ol Runner does.lol.... As they retraced off the highs their secondary run-up's fell short and they started forming SHS patterns I shorted them there. Used Fibonacci retracement lines (and lower gaps) as my short targets.
BTW my satellite internet and wireless router are working great! I bought my wireless ready laptop last year with the goal of going wireless.... Wish I had done this months ago!
My Satellite internet is from.... http://www.wildblue.com/
My router is a Linksys (Cisco Systems) Dual-Band 2.4 GHz Wireless A+G Broadband Wireless Router.... Got it at BBY.

Heck...I'm not right all the time...Just shooting for 65.98376%...Give or take a few thousandths ;)
Hey? Are you a tool & Die Maker too?! I knew We had something in common.
Here's a little known Lyehopper fact.... I can read a steel rule to within five thousandths of an inch (Note: a human hair measures about 0.004").... Have to wear my glasses nowadays though.
When I was a tool maker at IR (RockDrill Division), I made money betting the fellas on third shift that I could do just that. They would set a vernier or dial caliper on a specific dimension and hand the caliper to me backwards (so I couldn't see the face of the instrument) then I'd take out my trusty L.S. Starrett (SCX) six inch steel rule (tenths divisions) and measure the opening. I could CONSISTANTLY measure the opening with that scale to within 0.005" or less.... Once a dude bet me $20 bucks that I couldn't measure to within 0.002 (best two out of three).... I did it in two.... took his $20....

Well As you already know our favorite Vulcan won the POTW in impressive fashion! Way to go WEBS!.... YOU ARE HUGE DUDE!!!! Several other strong picks finished green this week too.... Included in those were a couple of our new players!!!!.
This was a very tough weeks wasn't it fellas!.... I have no room to beat you guys up, as I finished red this week too. Guess I'll be working OT this weekend to come up with a real winner for the upcoming week.
I'll post the points standing on my thread pretty soon. NOW!.... You won't want to miss a single contest, because there WILL be a stiff points penality for non-participation!

Hmm, worst pick but one, not stellar. SNDK cost the portfolio average almost 0.5%. Stupid downgrade! Oh well. It was a bad POTW week, as SPY rose 1%. I am not complaining (but not jubilant either): my (virtual) mechanical fund rose 0.25%; I'll make up a report. So I beat the POTW with something dumb and mechanical. Now for beating the market...
How is this for a challenge: My mechanical fund against the sharpest minds on this board. I'll lean back and let you do all the work. It might be best in that case for me not to enter a POTW pick, because of a conflict of interest. My picks are not meant to score in one week anyway, so they're just fluff as far as the POTW is concerned. How's that, Lye?

Lye,
Not to be a complainer, but honestly dude, I think anyone that takes a hit on a stock that moves +10% needs their head read - which is what happened to my pick. Let's make this thing a little more realistic and allow for targeting and/or trailing stops. Anyone that can pick something that moves that far deserves it. Sheesh, even a "stop to even" rule would have had me finish a no loss 8th instead of in the red 13th.

I hear ya Spike, I was in 3rd and up nearly 5% at one time with my VRTX short too, remember?.... I agree with your reasoning on the score keeping....
As for ACTUAL (real life) profit taking.... When I play these picks for real I'll be taking profits as the stocks hit my targets. So even though you finished 13th and red.... You'd still be a hero because of your contribution to the portfolio's profits last week. Ray would have been a hero too. Here's the thing that Karel and some others fail to realize.... I won't be trading the portfolio in "lock step" with the POTW contest results, I'll use simple old fasioned common sense and experience to nail down the profits. I'll also be leveraging the buying power with margin to accelerate the profits.
Back to the contest rules.... The only reason the rules stand where they do right now is because it's easy for me to keep score this way. If I have players trading in and out of positions it'll take too much time for me to keep up with the score. If we change the rules we'll still need "simple" rules that discourage daytrading. Post your proposal for revised rules Spike. Need to decide and post them soon so the fellas will know.
Tell ya what Spike.... I'll make you a deal, I'll gladly change the rules to your liking if you'll help me keep up with the score!.... Now if we had played your way last week the POTW would have been green and it would be more representative of the profit potential in our picks. Cool? Help me out dude?

Wish you'd play Karel.... I don't see any "conflict" of interest here. Afterall It's just a game. We've all finished red before, dosen't reflect on your stock picking abilities just the market. I'm all for the concept of 'ease of keepin' score. I agree that rules to discourage day trading are good unless someone can commit to the time to run it that way. I'll do it again in the New Year some time for a few weeks, but now's not good for me. I say keep the buy and hold rule, with the one additional rule of stop to even if it gets say +5 or 6% unless the trader specifically states otherwise. That way it's fair to all. And if you stop out based on that rule, that's it, you don't get another pick and you take the b/e result. I'd be happy with that. That one extra rule isn't much difference to the scorekeeper. And if you do need help keepin' score, I can do that and post daily results for a couple weeks, but I can't run the Spike daytradin' version til next year.

What-do-ya-say fellas? Should our Netherlander bud Karel skip out on the POTW? or keep pitching a pick into the hat?OK, I'll pitch one in, you can always pitch it out again. The possible conflict of interest is that I want to pit my Mechanical Fund against your POTW (you seem to have hijacked it neatly). If it's no problem for you, I'll just play, and hope for the occasional winner. This week I'll pick GES. I'll stop picking the first one of the screen, that might be courting the danger of silly downgrades too much, and once bitten twice shy. I'll take position nr.8 for my lucky number. And no, I don't mind losing with a single pick. That is why I diversify with my real money.
And 5% per week just seems overambitious, whichever way you want to play it. Just my opinion, of course.
Regards,
Karel

If your stock has a gain and you want to keep the gain and sell (or cover) the position. Either set (and post) a stop target or post to sell (or cover) at "market" price and I'll use the post time to nail down your price and gain....
After you sell (or cover) the position you ARE allowed another pick.... but ONLY one more for the duration of the week. Again you can sell it for a gain, sell it to avoid further loss, etc..... Using stops for closing the position only.
So basically NOW we get two trades per week for each player.
How's that sound Spike? Now this is more realistic!
I want some real gains now fellas! Remember 4-6% is a nice gain target, but each trader must decide what's enough priofit and/or loss.

sure would. If I'd get the open regardless of the time of day, I'd wait until about 30 minutes before the close and just pick one of the big gainers of the day, then immediatly close that position and take another position for the rest of the week.

I have one minute intravals.... So for example: When Mimo100 actually posted he was selling BNT it was 3:47pm..... My data shows the low transaction at 15:47pm (3:47pm) was $17.81 so he's entered as selling BNT @ 17.81 (using my Ameritrade intraday streamer).... Do you show different data?

If you decide you don't like it.... you are allowed another pick this week. TWO PICKS (one at a time) are now allowed!

By the way, to repeat, BNT was in MrMarket’s Vet dump. It was 14.25 when I looked a week ago. It is up over 3.5 points since then (25%). I think there are a lot of strong issues in the general MM dump. The trick is determining the general market direction. Thanks MrMarket, you are huge.

It's just a game dude. As I've already stated, when I'm trading your (the fellas) picks with real cash I'll be using my own criteria to enter and exit (won't trade exactly in lockstep with the contest anyway)....
I guess the question is: How much return can you nail down this week? You have plenty of time to stalk a perfect entry (long or short)....

The Allen family seems to control about 55% of the shares. No institution, fund or insider seems to be really selling. The low free float may give you quite unexpected results, though, so you might get lucky (or the opposite). But what do I know?

Lye,
You changed the rules just so that you could avert situations like this with our picks. Down over 13% in 2 days! Regardless of how well and fat you're doing in your personal portfolio it's not indicative an has nothing to do with what we're trying to accompolish here. If you were swing trading this stock in your personal portfolio would you still be holding on in hope of it changing direction? You really should consider exiting any loss over 7% and pick something new to try an recoup some of the loss to try and make the overall % of the POTW portfolio stronger. It's really bringing the rest of the portfolio down an isn't a fair indication of what we can do an how good we are. Spike and BJ, in their test portfolio's, would have exited their positions by now an added to their stronger positions. Still 1 1/2 days left to make some move to try and strengthen the POTW results. Lets treat it like it's our own money. Isn't that what you've been trying to get across to the rest of us?

[...] It's really bringing the rest of the portfolio down an isn't a fair indication of what we can do an how good we are. [...]
No it isn't, but as far as I understand Lye, the POTW doesn't count... which makes things a bit complicated. Lye seems to want to use the POTW as a kind of short list for a 'real' portfolio, real money he says, I would be a bit more careful. So on the one hand we have the players, who would like to win and see the POTW do well (and beat stupid things like the market and my Mechanical Fund), and on the other hand we have Lye, who doesn't care about such trifles and is only interested in making money with our picks. ( ;) eh, Lye?)
One of the reasons I brought my Fund into is, is that it should be possible to beat it, and let's see if the POTW can do it. Perhaps Lye will also disclose his other plans, to the point where we can see how well he does off us.

Karel,
We all have the same opportunities to view the picks and use them to our advantage if we want to do so. If Lye is adept enough to do that then I wish him the best of luck in doing so. He stated his intentions from the start so it's not like he hasn't been above board with his intentions. I just find fault with letting a position go, even if it's a game an has no fiscal value to any of us, to such an extent when we are all trying to do our best to make the highest % of gains in the final outcome of the game. Especially after changing the rules to enable everyone to have an opportunity to avert such high losses. We're supposed to be trying to give it our best shot an I don't feel that letting that position go that far is Lye's or the groups best shot.
If he were to have dumped it yesterday PM or early this morning an it reversed and dropped that's life and the markets but at least that would be treating it like you would in real life. No way in a short term situation, under the parameters we are supposed to be operating under, is a 13 % loss acceptable. I can appreciate anything up to 6/8 % because those points are basically acceptable standards for short term plays but not more than that.

These guys who run these companys are only looking out for themselves and they release the info in the early pre-market when they can get it as far up everyone's ass as they can before the open. We're at their mercy. You really never know what to expect and they never give a warning or any indication of what's coming up. I hate being subjected to this type of thing but I guess it's all part of it. I always try to look at SEC filings but it's just to hard to stay on top of this type of thing with everything else going on and just trying to stay on top of your positions and manage your money. Just checked and the insiders did seem anxious to sell stock in the last 30-60 daysFeel for ya billyjoe, but HOM's gap down isn't really that bad. Sure, there would have been some slippage this morning if you had premarket stops working, but a stop that gets you out for a -6.8% from the close is a whole lot better than -30% on a gap down and drop where you haven't used a premarket stop. Sheesh, you think HOM is bad.....MM followers should be very grateful MM didn't take Veteran Top 5 candidate ESCL long the other day; that has gapped down and sold off big time this morning and is -27% from yesterday's close. I guess daily money flow I liked so much ain't everything! But that volume filter I used eliminated ESCL from the Creme list, and this type of drop is exactly why. I don't need the aggravation! :D It also sure goes to show that no matter how bullish I feel about a stock I'd better keep my plan tight, use pre-market stops and accept on the occasions I'm going to have to take a -6% or worse hit in slippage. Being diversified will protect against the disasters. And limiting losses is still integral to that, and important enough to accept the slippage potential.
But on your other point of the SEC, that's a fair observation given your circumstances. Corrupt practices in the market by company execs does stink to high Heaven, and is infuriating for investors and traders who take the risk and invest in U.S companies only to see their ports take a hit when the scams come to light. I truly pray that such execs, like the Enron crooks, get their just rewards at the end of the day or end of their life. They better repent and turn from their wickedness or it'll be a long, hot, gnashing of teeth eternity for them. We all make mistakes and "but for the Grace of God go I", but it seems some 'offences' are worse than others when it hurts the honest, naive, and trusting folk in the world.
These days it's a given that we trade our money in issues where crooks and theives CAN influence its safety. We must do what we must do to protect against the Shenanigans! Diversify, trade indexes, use stops, whatever it takes...

I took the short position because I thought it would "pay off". You are correct that I have demonstrated poor judgment by holding it this long.... I would not have held it if it were in my actual portfolio, I use much tighter stops on short trades than 7% too (especially in a bull market).... Lye,
We all take picks that for whatever reasons go off in the wrong direction. There's nothing wrong with that an it happens. It's how we manage the good ones and bad ones that separate the wheat from the chaff. I'm not being critical of the pick only the management of the position after a specific point. You want all of us to give the best we can to increase our chances of a higher % of gains. It's only fair that the same expectations apply to everyone one of us. Where any one of us finishes is insignificant as long as we can say in the end that we applied our best to the endeavor for the whole. Good show an you're right about it not being over until the fat lady sings so the last day and a half can make a difference.

billyjoeYes, your broker is correct; the actual order is called a "sell limit" order or "sell market" order. The 'premarket stop' terminology I wrote to simply refer to a stop order that is active outside regular market hours (brokers using simulated stop orders will need you to specify that stops should be active outside regular market hours). For eg, IB uses simulated stops for futures, and those stops are not active outside regular trading hours unless you actually get into the TWS preferences and check a box to specify it.
But strictly speaking the term 'premarket stop' is misleading so disregard it.
And just on stops, for those who don't know the difference, market orders will slip and chase the bid until you're completely flat, so you'll get as much slippage as the market forces demand, whereas limit orders will only slip as much as you specify, and thus not guaranteeing that you fully exit (or even commence to exit) your position, as the bid could drop below your limit, and the ask chases the bid so your limit order is left stranded and unfilled.

Spike,
My broker says we're talking a "sell limit" order here and not a "premarket stop" order or is this all just semantics and it's the same thing?

You can also enter a stop limit order to protect yourself from getting
whipsawed. Here is a link to SEC.gov defining STOPS.

My pick turned out to be a pos, I should have stuck with pigs. GME did not have nearly enough Xbox 360's on hand and are getting destroyed for it. I'm sure this did not generate much good will to the people that put down money for an Xbox and they won't get them until 2006.
They will likely be a good long term play as people start buying the new 360 games but did not turn out well for this week.

( eh, Lye?)
One of the reasons I brought my Fund into is, is that it should be possible to beat it, and let's see if the POTW can do it. Perhaps Lye will also disclose his other plans, to the point where we can see how well he does off us.

Karel

Karel posted the above today in reference to a comment I made last evening (when I posted the POTW score) about my "real Life portfolio" being "fat and healthy" during this current Bull run, and praising the POTW's interim performance despite my 18th place pick..... I can't believe I even responded to this venomous post (one who's mal intent was masked by smiley faces and "Regards") ONCE, let alone twice.... btw, I especially noticed the divisive nature of the last sentence ("Us" vs "Lye") in each paragraph.
Look, I ain't really a trouble maker or nothing like that.... Hell, I just like to trade stocks, post some ideas and have a little fun over here.... and you guys are "by and large" pretty cool too.... but after all the effort I've put into this POTW thing, that post just makes me want to say one little thing.... Be very careful if you ever "INVITE" a certain bilingual fella over to dinner one weekend.... and whatever you do, DON'T drink too much brandy, keep your head about you.... otherwise you might be nursing broken knuckles in the morning, and trust me, that's never fun.
Well, gotta get up early and kill me something, so I'm hittin the sack now. I'll post the final score Friday evening.

You overlook smileys at your own peril, Lye, but I promise to take care and refrain from messages to you, even sideways ones as the one you refer to, that NEED them. That should clean up the communication. (Of course you lost the smiley in the quote you gave while you were cut and pasting, it just didn't copy.)
To further clean up the communication, I wasn't really referring to any message of yours, but replying to spike. I do not think it would be justified for anybody to connect the current state of your portfolio with the POTW, it wouldn't even be rational (the POTW in its current incarnation is not two weeks old).
And of course we are all here to let others profit from the knowledge we may have, and to profit from what the others share. Or so I hope.

Lye,
I believe I was the one who started all this BS with my post regarding your position this week. It was never meant to be degrading or to imply anything other than responsible position and money management of yours or anyone in the POTW to try an insure our maximizing the opportunity and to try to obtain the highest % of gain we could over the week. That was the original content for what we were trying to do.
I can't believe that something in the spirit of open dialogue has digressed to the point it has, especially in light of it being the Thanksgiving holiday. Regardless of one's personal feelings the fact remains that we should all be able to keep our lines of communication open and focus on what we are trying to accompolish without letting opposing views alienate us from one another. We all have to keep that in mind first and foremost and put our personal feeling on the back burner for the sake of harmony across the board.
As a functioning group there is always going to be times of opposing views and disagreement. It will make us all better individuals to keep that in mind and to consider in making our posts and presenting ourselves to one another. The whole thing is to help one another and learn from one another.
I feel that I started this situation initially with my post an although I certainly don't feel that I violated anyone's ego or space the last thing I want to see happen is the route this dialogue has gone. So in the spirit of Thanksgiving I'm offering my apologies to everyone an would expect the same from each of us in the hope that we can achieve our original goals. A safe and happy Thanksgiving to all of us in the spirit of open dialogue and friendship.

It would be great to win again, but the odds are against me at this point. I'll have to dig deep into the Vulcan portion of my brain to come up with another winner.
The big problem for next week is the fact that the dow is sitting close to the 11,000 mark. Either it's going to bust through or it's going to hit resistance and drop back. I would tend to favor the it dropping back.
What we need here is Spike's superior chart reading skills. I might have the Vulcan logic, but Spike is the master when it comes to technical analysis.
Do we go long or short? That is the question of the day.

Attention ALL $$$Mr. Market$$$ Members!!!!
You are welcome to play in BillyJoe's POTW contest on a weekly basis. It can be found (right here) on BillyJoe's Thread. (I'm just the scorekeeper)
Here are the Rules for all interested members. PLEASE READ ALL RULES!
(1) Pick one stock and post it (Long or Short) on the POTW thread anytime this weekend OR.... before the market closes on Monday.
(2) Any pick entered premarket will be entered at the "open" price. No limit orders are allowed.... If your pick is entered during market hours on Monday, the ticker price at the time of your actual post will be used to price your entry (I'll calculate the price, you just need to post the play)
(3) You can hold your pick all week.... or you are allowed exit your trade at any time to lock in a profit (or limit a loss).... After that, you can go into "cash" and make ANOTHER pick any time during the remainder of the week.... You may exit the SECOND pick to protect profit (or limit loss) but you must sit in cash after that.
(4) Try to pick a consistant gainer you have a valid reason to beleive will be profitable that week. PLEASE NO bb stocks allowed!... We're looking for volume and quality! Good Volume is critical in these picks because other's may be playing them in real life. I suggest an average of about 70k shares traded daily as a minimum vol. (volume requirement is not a hard rule just a suggestion) PLEASE NO "HAIL MARY" RISKY PICKS! This is a points race folks, BE CONSISTANT.... try to stay "Green".
(4) If you play a stock short, make sure shares ARE available to be shorted Example: I shorted a stock in the contest last week and when I attempted to "really" short it, there were NO SHARES AVAILABLE to short, thus that stock is NOT affected by short selling pressure AT ALL... and it kept rising. A very bad play on my part, and it cost me in my points standing. Learn from my mistake.... Make sure your "stinkers" can indeed be short sold in the real world!
Even if you are late to the game I invite you to still play You will be penalized for games missed.... but you'll be gaining valuable experience and the score card will reset to zero after the New Year begins.
Have fun! Do TA!.... Do FA!.... Do much aditional dd!.... PICK WINNERS! Enter your best picks in BillyJoe's POTW contest.... We'll all make money!!!!

Webs, Just curious but I was wondering what led you to this stock and what do you see there in it either TA or FA speaking that makes you believe in it. Other than the fact that it's a real cheapo and any small price move up will be a significant % increase and help in your positioning in the contest. I have no problem with the pick but am just curious as to what you saw in it. Will you be buying it for your own portfolio this week?
I was thinking it would be neat for everyone to give some small explanation of what they see in their picks, either technically or fundamentally, that led them to select if for their play. I mean there has to be some rationale for making a selection. It would be that much more logical for each selection to have some explanation for the pick. I for one would be interested in seeing that from each of us with our picks. I wouldn't make it mandatory but since we're all trying our best in finding great plays I would assume there must be some solid TA or FA reasoning behind the picks by each of us.

Spike,
TIII is a very interesting stock for being so low priced. I've noticed mention of it quite a bit on several internet sites just in the last week. It almost made my Cheap Stocks Port this week. Mutual funds seem to like it , it has excellent earnings , and has increased in price over 50% in the last 25 days. Webs probably has secret Vulcan stats that we have no access to. If it takes off this week the legend of Webs will continue to grow.

Billlyjoe,
I checked it out at MSN Money and the institutional holdings have decreased significantly and EPS qtr. over Qtr. and yr/yr are actually down from last year.
Weekly chart looks better that daily. I was just curious as to what Webs saw.

I have owned AMTD the past and I've shorted it in the past too.... but don't hold any position at the present time.
I do like to own stock in the companies I do business with though. For example, I own a WAD of shares in the local bank I use for my corporate banking (it's a thinly traded bb stock, got shares when they IPO'd and later I directly bought shares from a couple of Board members). This bank is growing like crazy too! One of the best performing stocks I have.... Holding this one for the long haul too....

Ski,
IBD says institutional buying over the last 13 weeks has been heavy and last quarter earnings are up 140%. Don't know if that is in comparison to previous quarter or corresponding quarter last year. I don't own this stock and am not picking it in any contest. I often find conflicting information on different sites. Which one do you go by ?
billyjoe
Ski,
I did find earnings figures that agree with yours on Lycos , but different numbers on Bloomberg.

I like MSN Money for things like insider trading, ownership, stock ratings and earnings etc.... they show much heavier institutional selling rather than buying. Also earning were off from previous qtrs. but 4th qtr. may have been up a little over last yr. 4th qtr. Also weekly chart is giving a channel short signal. But who knows. I wasn't critisizing the stock or play just was curious about what Webs saw. One other thing. I don't believe anything IBD has to say but that's up to everyone to make their own decisions on that.

In keeping with Skiracer's suggestion of explaining our picks....I like this stock from both a fundamental and technical viewpoint. It is 1st in it's industry group per IBD, is 2nd technically in it's group and 2nd in fundamentals. IBD has an EPS rating of 86 with an RS of 75. It is under heavy accumulation by institutions. LEND is rated a 9 by StockScouter at MSN where it also is listed as having strong institutional buying. There appears technically to be a cup with handle although the handle is relatively short but there has been a significant dryup in volume lately. "Experts" have been forecasting the end of the housing market for several months but I believe there is room left to grow especially with some doubt regarding further tightening by the Fed.

I like the idea of offering reasons for our picks. It not only helps to see the perspective of the entrants but it also encourages us to examine our own choices and learn even more after the contest is over when we examine how they fared.

I just took a look at TIII an there is alot more current financial info on them at Yahoo. i'm going to have to start using them more often for this type of info. Thanks.

My pick for this week is nothing. I’ve chosen to sit out this week. I feel it is not wise opening new positions long or short. You ask how can you play or win if you don’t enter? Well in real life I’m not playing yet and so why should I enter a play game if I’m not willing to play now for real? Lye you can penalize me the 5 points if you wish.
Just trying to follow my real game plan here and I see above average risk entering the markets at current levels. I’m bull but a cautious bull for now. I do think many set-ups will occur during the next pullback.

Ray,
I, for one, would never hold it against you. It was just a suggestion prompted by Webs pick and no big deal one way or another. I know you're still holding MOT until Dec. 15. I'm out of it with decent gains but wish I would have stayed in because it looks great for $25/26 range if this current uptrend holds. Good luck with MOT. Some breakout on AKAM last week. I hear your reasoning there Runner.... but there is no rule that says you have to be trading in real life to play this game dude..... I gotta beleive there's a stock out there that you've researched that (you believe) will either fall or rise this week.... Or will at least sit at zero. That "safe" zero play will at least keep you away from the 5% penality. Please reconsider and throw in a pick for "the team's sake". And remember the new rules allow you to exit your trade to nail down a profit of limit a loss. And even allow a second pick!
Thanks for your concern SKI really appreciate It.Hope your right on MOT but the market seems a little scary has been going up up up ? But I do think MOT will be ok If It pulls back enough I'm going to buy a little more.Good luck In all your picks ski GO BILLS

I'm going with PDLI - long this week. I bought it last week at $26.85 and the position is still open. Another one of Morpheus Trading Groups picks. A beautiful double bottom cup with handle and just filled that little gap at the end of it's handle last week and looks ready to blow off this week. If it clears $29 this week it will be clear sailing with no overhead resistance. I'm discounting Friday as a no show day with the weekend and everyone trying o get out of town early for a long weekend holiday.

Very stong balance sheet, pipeline, and revenue growth. Will be profitiable by next year. This one is a strong buy and hold for 1-2 years from $25 to $40.

There's plenty of room for improvement. Still not earning any money but looks real good for next year. I just want to get through this coming week. A whole lot of potential and would love to see it clear $29 range. It could be clear sailing from there easily to mid $30's in this coming qtr. Do you own it? I was lucky and got it kind of early from Morpheus. I think at this price it is still a decent entry but hopefully will take off this week. I think the short week last week with the holiday sandwiched between Thurs. and Friday held everything back so I'm discounting the end of last week. Actually that's a good thing for anyone thinking of an entry as it hasn't really taken off yet. Well see what this week brings. Hoping the market uptrend stays in place. Good luck.

Jiesen,
Are you waiting for a pullback from this point? What would you consider a good entry from here? Nothing personal, but I'm hoping and betting on no pullback to below $26 again from here over the short term. That's why I thought that anything between $28/29 would be a good entry right now. But you might not see it any lower anytime soon after tomorrow or this week.
Of course my plan isn't the same as yours would be I think. I'm trailing a stop and will be happy to see $31/32 range. If it goes higher than $30 I'll probably take half off the table and let it run out to see where it stalls or gets stopped out.

Yeah, I'd probably only be a buyer at 25 or 26 right now, but that could change, if AMLN were to hit 50 next week or something, and I could free up some of my biotech capital. I think anywhere under 30 is a great price for PDLI, actually.

A veritable bloodletting today. In my own trading portfolio I cut the losses to my previous gains with both positions in PDLI and SIRF. Exited SIRF at 27.75. Hate to give back those hard earned gains. Exited PDLI at $28.25. I'm keeping a close eye on the position in PDLI. 7%, which is my normal is $26.72, but if it hits $27.50 today I want to close the position so it doesn't screw up our total %. So I'm placing a stop loss on PDLI at $27.50. If it hits it I'm out and will look for something new.

(You are allowed to re-enter your first pick if desired, that [then] becomes your second pick)....

To answer your question..... YES.... you CAN buy back the same pick after you exit. And you can sit in cash and wait as long as you'd like to enter the second trade.... Friday @ 3:30pm if you want to.... But only two (2) individual trades can be made during the week.

You are on my tail, but i do think CESV is fundamentally a better stock and I do own it. I wouldnt buy TIII....but this is just a game.
if anyone needs a pick, HOM is still availabe and just startin again....I bought more today. I believe that their guidance for the year already includes the dilution of the private placement announced 11/23...well see.
edit: sorry DMK I see you already picked HOM....so Ill just say I agree with my own cash (big time )
good luck to all...heres to all of us being up Big ultimately we are all in this for the same reason.

I wouldn't mind catching a pullback buy on CESV. I need to learn your screening methods. You seem to find a lot of big winners. :)
No...the contest is not over...I almost bot my pick...INPC since it did not gap as much as I thought it would...But, I mo'backed on OXPS which has been on my main watch for over a week...I got a little anxious and went in too early...but so far...so good. My 2 mistakes were that I did not wait for it to p/b enough and that I went in w/ a stock that was in a group that was the 4th worst at MG Groups today...Not a particularly good combo...Remember what Spike said...Don't get hyped when you do good by breaking your rules...Doug(IIC)

Been looking at HOM for a couple of days since it took the hit on the private placement. That private placement isn't that cheap when you really take a close look at the numbers as a discount to the price of the stock when it was placed. Probable less than a 1 point difference. I don't think it will make that much difference in the dilution of the total share price. They are the best game in town regarding the hurricane play in the southern coastal states, from Florida to Texas across the whole gulf coast area. Someone is going to have to get all that business and they are a prime candidate. Anyway took a full position in the stock in the pre-market this morning. Got in between $5.97/6.00. Pete, I guess you must own it too huh.

LOL you're buying my shares I think haha.
DMK,
I bought it Monday at $6.00. I didn't think the $5.50 price for the shares in the private placement would dilute the share price or effect the actual market price that much since it wasn't that far off the actual share price. I didn't think that the private placement price was that cheap for those shares. Whoever bought them at that price is looking for a much bigger gain in share price over the $6/6.50 it was selling at when they bought the private placement shares. When I bought it at $6 my reasoning was that it was only .50 off the private placement price. When it went to $5.60 range today I thought that it was an even better bargain being that it was now that much closer to the private placement price of $5.50. When it reversed at the end of the day and turned back up I jumped in at $5.65 and took another 2000 shares. So now I'm holding 4000 shares averaged at $5.825. It closed today at $5.75. Technically speaking it could drop lower to give a channel long signal around $5.50/5.60, which could happen tomorrow, but fundamentally it looks real good and that last earnings report was great. Someone is going to get a big piece of that rebuilding action along that whole gulf coast from Fla. to Texas even if there aren't anymore hurricanes this year. It's right up this outfits alley an this private placement is going to help finance their setting up to grab the biggest piece of the pie that they can. The government cannot let these people or the geographical area fall by the wayside so there is going to be alot of govt. money pumped into fixing things up. I'm feeling confident that HOM is going to benefit from that money in a big way. They also are not joined at the hip to the building sector or group. As far as the contest this week is concerned, I would like to see it do well for the sake of the game and the overall % , that's why I made the change in positions, but you know where my primary interests lie.

Ski,
I bought 2 weeks ago at 6.36 and am not worried yet. It keeps hitting the stops in the Cheap Stock Port but has always rebounded so far. This company seems to be much more stable than an AOB type. I also bought into cashmaker's CHB. It is a good combo with HOM. Maybe we'll have to wait a few months for a payoff and hope the executives don't do anything further to mess up the natural prrocess.
