Still, sign me up again for AMLN long next week, please, Mr. Rob!:D
Spikefader,
what is that green indicator on the top of the graph?
I'd be tickled pink if you could explain it to me.
Thanks

DEF.... I ran a search for FIA.... and "Cashmaker" (whatever happened to Cashmaker anyhow) mentioned it in july 2005 (up over 100% since then) and "Adman" mentioned it in April 2006 (up about 35% since then).... "The Stockboy" never mentioned FIA, he just drove a Fiat and "Uncle Addy" really thought it was cute....lol

I'm liking AXS this week. I'm liking the insurance business (where the Oracle of Omaha makes vast fortunes). I'm liking a 0.4 PEG. I'm liking that it's current P/E is < 7. I'm liking its sales growth. I'm liking the Debt/Eq. ratio of 0.12. I'm liking $1.11 billion in lev. free cash flow. I'm liking that it's sittin right on its 50-day moving avg. I'm liking that despite putting up lots of nice numbers, it's only 10.2% higher than it was a year ago.
All that having been said ...
AXS long

Rob,
I'll take AAPL long. Thanks. Why? Their income growth is 4X competition. Profit margin is 30% better than competition. RS over last 6 months is 92. They've got the hot products at the best time of the year to move them. Christmas is time for irrational frenzy of buying.

Peanuts,
Great stock, thinking of buying w/ real money.
Only thing that worries me is the insider selling as of late and the dubious past of the new CEO.
Also, what are the chances of that being a head and shoulders?
I'm assuming pretty slim, but want to minimize risk.

My suspicion was that Cashmaker was into P/D...Maybe he'll read this and prove me wrong...He disappeared from another forum I was in at the precise time he left here...He rarely answered anyone's questions as far as I recall....And when he did it was not in a nice way if they disagreed w/ him...Ignoring those that respond to your posts is usually a sign of that from my experience anyway...Doug

Don't you just hate those correction days? What a horrible day it was, virtually across the board today. A few amongst us managed to make a profit though.
Ski dominated most of the day, but right at the end Da Mighty Kong threw his banana peel under Ski's feet and took the lead.
Other than that the only others who ended up in the black on Cyber Monday are our two Js, Jblaze and Jiesen.

I say everyone's entitled to one oversight, especially a newbie to the whole process. My vote is for letting Mary in either tonight or tomorrow before the open. And treat it just as if she was in on time. I don't see where it's that big of a deal. But remember he or she who procrastinates can only procrastinate once in fairness to everyone else.

But remember he or she who procrastinates can only procrastinate once in fairness to everyone else.It is my opinion that rules work best when they are consistent and applied equally to all. Only then can there be order and predictability. When I was two years old, I jumped off of a porch and broke my collarbone. The law of gravity granted me no mulligan just because of my relative inexperience, and that's they way it should be.
Sorry, Mary. Yes, now you know the value of taking a ca$h position if you're undecided on a stock pick. The "silver lining" is that if today is any indication of how the rest of this week is going to go, you might be better off with a 5% loss than you would have otherwise.

Thanks for putting in a good word for me, Ski, but I had the rules pointed out to me during the first or second week I played when I tried making a pick for the following week one-half hour before market close on Friday. So I know the rules. Not only that but to be very fair, I think Rob should stick with what he told me back then -- no bending the rules, not even for family. I'm OK with it.

If there's any doubt about who's king of the jungle this week, then Da Mighty Kong has just burned away some of the clouds. But can he continue his rampage? Aha! That's the question that no one can yet answer!
I always knew that anyone with green blood and pointed ears would just HAVE to be a sneaky cuss, and the Vulcan, Websman, did much to solidify that notion in my mind, by shorting MED, that has had an amazing run, and then cashing out two minutes before the bell! Like I said, too much galavanting around the universe with that sneaky Cap'n Kirk!
When I was a kid growing up, I always thought that the Flying Dutchman was Honus Wagner, the great shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1897 to 1917, one of the greatest ballplayers in history. But the way our resident Dutchman, Karel, came flying out of negative territory to land solidly in the bronze spot, now I'm beginning to wonder.
Three more full trading days will tell the final story though. So stick around!

Please sell AOB for me. Thank you.
Da Mighty Kong benefitted from a gap up at the open, so his sale went off at $26.00 even, giving him a mind-numbing 15.61% for the week so far.
The Flying Dutchman gave back only a "smidge" (to use one of Louetta's favorite words) and maintains that all-important number two position.
But ... WHOOOOAH!!! Just when it looked like ol' Mimo had the third position sewn up, look who comes from waaayyyy behind with a 12% gain on the day! It's that gravity-defying Uphill Racer again! You got it goin' on, Ski! And it makes the Ice Man's rather huge 5.6% gain on the day pale by comparison!
Will Kong sit tomorrow out, hoping no one can catch him? Will the Flying Dutchman achieve more lift? Will the Uphill Racer blast us all off the slopes? Or will he wipe out on one of those moguls you can't see because there are no shadows at high noon? Will Mimo take this turn of events lying down?
These and other exciting questions will be answered tomorrow, as the trading week plays out to its inevitable close! So be sure to tune in ... same HUGE time! Same HUGE channel!

Oh, what a nail-biter it was, my friends!!! A mighty smackdown between two venerable giants among traders!!!! Of course I'm speaking of Da Majestic, Mighty Kong and the ever-surprising wizardry of the seemingly Rocket-propelled Uphill Racer!!!!
After all the fur and fresh powder stopped flying, it was the Simian Steamroller, Da Mighty Kong who prevailed, turning in a whopping, eye-popping, jaw-dropping, 17.79%!!! That's no monkey business, and you don't need opposable thumbs to figure that out!!! Nice playing, DMK!!!
There were no "bunny hills" or "novice slopes" on the skillful Skiracer's run this week!!! Coming back from -4.5% on Tuesday he masterfully skunked the rest of us like Pepe LePew in a limburger cheese factory!!! He finishes the week with the huge silver medal (and I'm guessing a little smile on his face) and an even huger 15.33%!!! The wine will flow in the Racer household this evening—and I mean the good stuff!!!
The Akron Kid, Mimo, while not sharing the rarified air of the top two killers this week, still quietly took all the rest of us to the woodshed and gave us a good, old-fashioned whoopin'!! The Akron Kid racked up a very tough-to-beat 7.92% on the week, which is very fine playing by anyone's accounting!! Way to go, Mimo!!
The way this week started out, it seemed unlikely that the active players would end up with a positive score for the week, but that's exactly what they did, and in fine fashion too, with a combined 1.51%! This makes the fifth consecutive week the team has sailed home in the black! Very fine playing, dudes!

DMK and Mimo, congrats on a good week. That was a nice play at the end DMK. BillyJoe,
That's cheating, don't you think? It is going to pay a divy of $26.35, and in real life you'd have to pay that out of pocket. I don't know what Rob thinks, but it sure gives you an unfair advantage because in POTW you aren't penalized (as far as I know).
This game is fun, and it really doesn't matter to me if you win, but I thought I'd point out this pick isn't true-to-life, which I think POTW should be.
I'd also put up a bunch of smiley faces so you know I am trying to be nice, but some folk got tired of looking at them, so I'll just say this: BillyJoe, I am trying to be nice.

Sure, Rob. Here is an example.
IF I were to short WLT today at $49.35, on Dec 6 the stock pays a divy of 1.68 shares of MWA. MWA is currently $15.62, so the divy will be $26.21. WLT's share price will be adjusted downward $26.21. So WLT will be $49.35-$26.21=$23.14 on DEC 6. Looks like a winnah for BillyJoe. BUT in real life, if Billy were to short WLT today, he would have to pay the owner of those shares $26.21, and so he would not really have a winner at all since the drop in price on WLT would be offset by his payment of the missing divy to the guy who owns those shares.
See what I mean?

Rob could always adjust the closing price to reflect the dividend, too. This should also happen on the flip side... if a trader was long, then the gap down should be filled with CA$H

Regarding adjusting a share price in the contest due to dividends, I say that Rob should do nothing. I own a stock, ACAS, that went ex-dividend today. Predictably, its pps declined today after the open, but has drifted up since then. That is, the market is making its own decision about the relative impact of the dividend versus the future prospect for the stock. The dividend $ changing hands is to some extent extraneous, and the market will accommodate its significance in how the shares are priced in real time.
Don't ask Rob to turn the POTW into an "index" for Pete's sake!
Do nothing!

See what I mean?Yes, I do see what you mean. So that's the way it works, huh? I guess that's never happened to a stock that I was holding.
It seems to me the fair thing to do in that case would be to figure the cover price (assuming the cover occurs after the dividend) like this: WLT*1 + MWA*1.68. Make sense?

Rob,
I thought at one time it was stated that dividends are not figured into the stock price in the POTW although it isn't in the rules. If our own Elliot Spitzer eagle eye Newborn hadn't noticed it I'd be free and clear after covering Wednesday morning. I'd like IIC and Jiesen in on this discussion as I remember someone playing a .0001 stock very early in the POTW and coming up with a 50% gain. Can't I get points for creativity ?
------------billyjoe
p.s. And what if I don't cover?
I'd let it slide and forget the divvy...It's not like there's any real $$$ at stake here...Doug

If our own Elliot Spitzer eagle eye Newborn hadn't noticed it I'd be free and clear [. . .]So, by your own admission you were trying to pull a fast one on us.
Can't I get points for creativity ?Sure. Brownie points. I do recall the question about dividends coming up before, but we were talking in a completely different context. The numbers we were talking about weren't anything approaching those here.
p.s. And what if I don't cover?Impossible. You have to cover by 4:00 Friday. :)
I've just come up with a new moniker for you. I think I'll wait till Friday to unveil it though. :)

Yeah, I remember that discussion- but it was on the POTY thread, and Doug ruled that dividends are irrelevant to his contest (and this is stated clearly in the POTY rules up front). While I disagree in principle on ignoring the dividend, it's his contest and he can do it however is easiest for him.

Rob,
Don't call me slick Willy. I'm just trying to liven things up around here. Do I really have to cover or is it just like the long picks where they are "sold" automatically at 4pm Friday. Actually I'm not taking a cash dividend , but stock which would give me essentially 2 stocks which is not allowed in this contest. I think everyone's mad they didn't think of it first. You could call me the Sergey Brin of the POTW.

Wow. I had never seen the Nicholas Brothers before. When they did the splits, jumping over each other as they came down those giant stairs, I was thinking thoughts like, "Men aren't supposed to do the splits" and "these guys are as athletic as any NFL player." OK ... I hear the trick is to buy low and sell high. I guess I'm not doing that in the case of my decision to sell DLIA. But I'm trying to do that with my decision to buy KYPH, which has been down all day today. I'm hoping it will go up and up and up after I buy it ... so ...
Rob: Please sell DLIA and buy KYPH for me, please. Thanks.

Yes, it worked for me yesterday. But it would appear that there are some profit takers today and, so far, I'm losing the gain I had. Last I checked, KYPH was down around 2% (give or take). :(

If you had something that you wanted to test out who would you pick to be a beta tester...Some wimpy guy who just goes along with whatever...Or a Direct, Upfront, Honest Guy who's not afraid to give you some constructive criticism on how to improve your product or service?
As a matter of fact...I happen to be very good at analyzing things, finding fault and suggesting improvements. I cannot think of anyone better to test this thing out than me...I'll find every flaw in it and I'll let them know about them....I'm looking forward to it as I'm sure they are anxious to hear what I think...But then again, I coulda just been selected to participate by some SUPER COMPUTER!!!
Also, I don't consider myself a basher...I just try to help them out...Just think of all the free publicity they get from me..."The only Bad Publicity is No Publicity"...Doug
PS...I was a DailyGraphsOnline Beta Tester too...Who do you think ranted and raved about their RealTime Service not being available on intraday charts???...That's Right...It was me...Did I have any influence???...Who knows???...But now they have it.
Geez...I thought everyone was joking around the Net today when they asked "What is a Beta Tester"...But I've heard it so many times today...Maybe not???
Beta=Test...When you want to get feedback on a new product you are considering to offer for sale you offer it to a group that you think might be knowledgeable about your product or similar products...Your product is offered to those Beta Testers for a period of time in return for their feedback/opinion about your product...Sometimes it is free (as in this case w/ IBD Alerts)...Sometimes you charge a nominal fee and sometimes you pay the beta testers...Doug

I laid it out there before the open for the board. Who got their +7% in real money in less than 30 minutes? (Not me, I'm just resorting to desperate measures to win the POTW.)
The story on the stock is it is merging with a REIT for office building, mostly in Hawaii. The company also declared a $1.00/sh special dividend as of around Jan. 14, payable later in Jan. 2007. At 14.00/sh the div is worth 7.14%, but who knows what the stock will do between today and ex-div. Odds are the stock will sink back toward about $5/sh after that. This deal is basically allowing a private RE company (Jay Shidler) to go public at low cost.

Well, consider what I was seeing at 10am today, when the volume at that point was not remarkable, so I was expecting a fade today. Since then I only looked at the quotes again a few minutes ago, so of course I am astonished at both the price and volume action.

wait, what's this.... Skiracer has exposed a loophole??? Awesome! So, if we want to change our entry price then we edit the original post?
So, if we want to change our entry price then we edit the original post?It can only change to your disadvantage. It can never change to your advantage. The only way it can change to your advantage is if you edit the TICKER SYMBOL of your original pick. And if you're ever caught doing that, you will be summarily banned from the contest, rolled in the briar patch, tarred, feathered, and run out o' town on a rail.

First of all I wasn't trying to do anything underhanded and it's apparent that the buy post was timed at 1:24 pm. Since it was the last post on the POTW thread when I wanted to say that to Park, I elected to just edit it and add those comments which were also timed separately from the first buy post. I don't see how anyone could be misled or misconstrue the times on the original buy post and the edit since they are two entirely different times. But sorry if I caused any confusion with the edit. I never gave it a second thought that anyone would see the entry as anything except at 1:24 pm which was my intention from the start. So figure the time of the entry at 1:24 pm, which was the time of the first post please, and what I meant and wanted from the start. Thanks Rob.
First of all I wasn't trying to do anything underhanded and it's apparent that the buy post was timed at 1:24 pm [. . .]You sound irritated and defensive. I was only using this as an example to you and to others what can possibly happen if you edit the post in which your pick was made. This very thing happened to Peanuts a couple of months ago, only in his case it DID negatively affect his entry price. (Remember, Peanuts?) I only wanted to caution you not to get into the habit of doing that.

huh? what? dang short term memory loss... now I remember
Well there's never a dull moment here at the ol' POTW. At the start of the week it looked like that whimsical whiz-kid, Gwhiz, was wanting to whisk his way to the winner's circle again, until ... "Houston, we have a problem." Houston Wire & Cable (HWCC) got "stripped" of its early gains, leaving the whiz kid with little "insulation" from the ravages of Wall St.
Then Mr. Goober Peas surprised everybody, blasting off the next two days into the stratosphere with his Under Armour (UARM) pick, before he treated us all to a public display of self-inflicted ritual disembowelment, known as hara-kiri (often pronounced "Harry Caray") with his long-shot pick of Food Technology Services (VIFL).
http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/1600/agd7.gif (http://imageshack.us)
Enter Park Twain, also known as Biff Clemens, Samuel Clemens' long-lost brother (the one the family doesn't want to talk about). With a one-two punch combination of a left jab and a right uppercut, he sent us all reelin' and a rockin' ... rollin' till the break o' dawn. The left jab was Fibernet Telecom (FTGX), and that painful right uppercut was Arizona Land Income Corp. (AZL). Just how good was it, you ask? Good enough to net 7.05% and the gold medal in a week where everyone's getting skittish and talking about shorting everything they can find!!! Beautiful plays there, Biff!!! You ought not to be such a stranger on this part of the river!!
Let me tell you somethin', friends: there was nothing blasé about Jblaze's MEMC Electronic Materials (WFR) play!! He blazed his way to a very strong 5.79% gain and the silver medal. As Johnny Storm would say, "Flame on!!" Great pick, Jblaze!!
Putting in an appearance all the way from his fortress of solitude under the North Pole is our bronze medal winner this week: faster than a speeding glacier, it's the Ice Man! With powers beyond those of mortal men! (Well, we let him think that anyway.) Playing one of his old favorites, ICO, Inc. (ICOC), he was able to ice-skate his way to a cool 5.51% pickup. Very nice, Ice!

Rob,
MED Long please. That was a great play Park. Can't believe you exited so soon. Barring someone else coming from back out of the pack I need MED to go to 13.55/13.60 range to just sneak in. Still a little bit of time left.
Rob,
This was my original post and it was posted at 1:24 pm. I'm not irritated or being defensive about any of it, but I am confused about how the post could possibly be misconstrued to the point where the buy could possibly be put in at the price at 2:20 pm instead of 1:24 when it was originally posted regardless of the time stated for the edit. Could you explain to me the rationale behind how it could be taken that I could get the price at 2:20 pm instead of 1:24 pm. Whose interpretation would that be up to anyway?

It's just how the rules work, Ski. Rule 8 says not to edit the post where you make your pick, or you might have some unexpected consequences:
Rule 8:8) If you enter a pick before the market opens, you will get the opening price. If you enter a pick during the trading day, your opening price will be determined by the time stamp on your post. Your price will be the opening price of the minute in which your post is made. Important: do not edit your post in which you make your stock pick! If you do, then the prices at the time of the post and of the edit will be compared, and you will get the higher of the two in the case of a long position, or the lower of the two in the case of a short position. (The opposite of these holds true for a post in which you close a position.)
And of course, all interpretation is left up to the scorekeeper.
Do not take it personally, Skiracer, because I would not suspect you of trying to do anything underhanded. It just seems like a really good policy that no one should ever edit their pick posts ... just to keep all the honest people honest, you know? Those time stamps on the messages are very important for running a fair contest. As it happens, this time I did see your post before you edited it anyway. But I've always strongly discouraged people from editing the posts in which their picks are made.
I was a beta tester for Yahoo Finance message boards, but they never listened to my suggestions. As a matter of fact, they did just the opposite...
Maybe they did listen??? :p

I never read all of the rules governing this but I guess you need rules for everything to protect everyone from this type of situation. It just seems that with all the rules it makes things so much more complicated. Boy I'm glad MED went down instead of up because that would have really complicated the issue.
Congratulations Park on a well deserved win and Blaze and Doug for their strong finishes at 2nd and 3rd. It was an exciting finish to an interesting week.

What's this? Park Twain is growing and growing and growing... We all knew how big his stock picks can be sometimes, but holy fried pumkin pie, he comes at us with AZL and whip creams us all! It was awefully nice of him to not take full advantage of the enormous daily gain that AZL experienced, and to only get enough points to solidly plant him in the lead. For this generosity combined with a great stock pick, I am branding Park Twain as $$$HUGE$$$, but we already knew this, so it's no surprise.
Blaze and Doug, you guys are BIG, nice try getting to the top, but Park knows what's going on here.
Rockin Rob, for the following week, I would like to begin with a long position in LOGC.

Well I finally read all the rules for the first time today. Never knew we had evolved into having such a set of rules. We should have a rule stating that you read the rules and sign an affidavit stating that you have read the rules before you are allowed to play. And then if you violate the rules you get an automatic 5 % penalty for a rule violation.

I'm going to need a break from the scorekeeping duties here. I will continue posting the scores through Friday, Dec. 29. After that, somebody here is going to need to step up and take the reigns. I thought I'd let you all know now so you can vie amongst yourselves for this wonderful, coveted privilege. Assuming the contest will continue next year, I will probably continue to post picks. But I do not think I will be able to continue keeping the score. So ... who wants it? If more than one would like to try it, please decide among yourselves who it will be.
The new scorekeeper has the prerogative to modify the rules in any way he or she sees fit.

The Whiz Kid and his Houston Wire & Cable turned on the juice, creating so much heat that poor old Ice Man has started melting down into a puddle, like that scene in the Wizard of Oz when Dorothy throws water on the Wicked Witch of the West—not that the Ice Man bears any resemblance, physical or otherwise, to the fanciful villain of that classic movie, just that the melting part is similar. :)

You're getting to be a smart kid. Let me ask you this. Would you rather win the contest with HWCC or see me win it with MED? Don't be getting impatient with HWCC at this point. It's building up momentum and I'm looking at it for an entry tomorrow. I like it once it breaches it's 20 ma at 23.30. It it does that tomorrow I'm in.
MED actually broke my 7% line at 12.60 today for a few moments but I gave it a little more room and it held it's own for the day. Monday, Tuesday, and today there was decent volume coming in at the end of the day. I'm optimistic about tomorrow. You're still holding it right. Just be patient with it for the time being.
As if in retaliation for my hara-kiri comment last Friday, Mr. Goober Peas "shells" out a couple o' winners. Just don't ignore that "whizzin'" sound you hear inches behind your husk. And Twain's paddle-wheel steamboat is still chuggin' up the wide Mississip.

I would propose a change of the rules.
The same stock position cannot be held by more than one player going into the Monday open. Otherwise, it is OK at any other time during the week for more than one player to have the same stock position.
This rule change rewards a player who has a better apprehension of a given stock's movements during the week, after the Monday open.

Park, if you take over the scorekeeping duties beginning Tues., Jan. 2, you can modify the rules however you see fit. As of Fri., Dec. 29 close, I am no longer the POTW scorekeeper.
Markets are closed Mon., Jan. 1, for New Year's Day.
The contest needs a scorekeeper. No one has yet volunteered.
Thanks for all of the time you spend on this thread. You have done a marvelous job, Rob. When you pass the gavel, will you also be handing off all of the the scorekeeping tools?
Thanks for all of the time you spend on this thread. You have done a marvelous job, Rob.I appreciate the nice words, Mimo. Thanks.
When you pass the gavel, will you also be handing off all of the the scorekeeping tools?I've given that question considerable thought, and the bottom line is: no, I prefer not to—and I have my reasons, which are personal.

sell LBTYA
buy FRP
sell LBTYA
buy FRPPark, dude, sorry but I'm going to have to call you down again. You're only allowed two round trips in one week. The good news is that you made 0.28% on LBTYA, which, when added to your earlier gain of 3.34%, gives you a final total for the week of 3.62%. If you could do that every week, in a short time you'd be so rich it would be absolutely decadent.
One must never underestimate the ollll' Flying Dutchman, Colossal Karel!!! In a strange, topsy-turvy week, where it seemed like so many stocks were down, yet somehow the major indicies were up, the Dutchman just sailed on smooth waters right up to a 5.23% gain and the gold medal!!!
http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/9264/aoh7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Looks like another WNR (read "winner") from the Peanut Gallery!! No swan dives this week, eh, Mr. Goober Peas? Well, maybe a miniature swan dive, but losing 2.79% on the final day still left Mr. Pittsburgh Peas with a mighty fine 4.68% for the week!!
Judging by the looks of Rob's Notorious Neon Spaghetti Chart, it seems that along about Wednesday the Whiz Kid and Mr. Peas decided they'd tango in tandem, both moving two steps forward, then three steps back. But the Whiz Kid put on a fine display of stock-picking prowess nonetheless, tallying another 3.65% by the close of the session, and doing so on the same horse that threw him last week! Ride 'em Whiz-o! Ride 'em!
And how about a nice round of applause for Park, River, and Ray, the beer-drinking dart-thrower, who all three beat the indicies this week, which only goes to show that ... umm ... well, I don't know, but I'm sure there's SOMEthing that it only goes to show!
The cumulative average total amongst the active players took a pretty meaty blow to the bread basket, losing more than 2%, but we'll straighten that out next week won't we, gang?

Here I am, thinking that everyone wants to have a $$$HUGE$$$ peanuts, when out from under Whizzy and I comes colossal Karel and his longtime favorite, PCCC. What can say, other than congrats to the hot Karel this week. You, kind sir, are $$$HUGE$$$
Whizzy, you get to wonder this cyber realm with a BIG peanuts for the week... nice pick, dude! :D
Rob, I volunteer to take over the scorekeeping duties beginning Jan 2. :o You've done an outstanding job. I'll have big shoes to fill. I'll hold onto the reins of this conastoga as long as I possibly can. Hopefully the crossing of the next year will go smoothly.
Beginning next week, I would like to start with a long position in USU. Thank you very much and keep up the great work for the next 2 weeks!
Rob, I volunteer to take over the scorekeeping duties beginning Jan 2. :oHey, that's great, Peanuts! Better start boning up on your spreadsheet skills, dude! You're gonna need 'em! As far as "filling my shoes" goes, I'm sure you'll bring your own set of talents to the table, and everybody's got their own "style," so to speak. You'll no doubt have a different angle or two that will probably be interesting. What you all have been subjected to over the past however-long-it's-been, 10 months or so, has just been my own particular way of looking at and formatting the contest. Thanks for volunteering, Peanuts. I'll be looking forward to your updates.

A trip down memory lane. Just went back to view the first 11 POTW contests from January to April 2005 . Although there were not many contestants each week and they actually picked a portfolio of 2-10 stocks, it took 11 weeks before we had a repeat winner. Here are the first 11 winners, unfortunately at least a couple of them are no longer with us.

Look at who tops the list on this first day of week 51! It's the friendly neighborhood Vulcan, Websman! Is that "new paradigm" at long last beginning to emerge? The tricorder readings are inconclusive.
Rounding out the list of those who ended up positive for the day are "Dancin'" Pete Hansen, "Flame on, Johnny Storm" Jblaze, and "Bill Nye the Scifos Guy."

Well, smack my jaws! Yesterday when I said that Dancin' Pete just can't be beat, obviously I was just caught up in the spirit of the moment. I say that because suddenly we have a new leader! Spirited Spike and his Diamond Hill Gang have commandeered the list and are taking no prisoners!
Nevertheless, Dancin' Pete Hansen has dropped to second by a mere 0.53%, so this this contest is far from over.
JBlaze has kept the bed of coals fiery hot and has managed to burn his way into third place, ahead of Scifos by a whopping, practically insurmountable 0.01%!
Personally, I have found this to be a rather punishing week. But in the words of Websman, tomorrow I make my comeback.:)

It was banishment to a cold and distant, barren asteroid in a galaxy far, far away for us this week, as Spike Vader, distant cousin to the Lord of the Sith (and every bit as mean), exacted his vengeance and unleashed his violent fury upon us!!! Diamond Hill (DHIL) was an awsomely great pick in a week where it was tough to make a thin dime! Excellent, Spike!!! Give our regards to the Emperor.
Dancin' Pete's Aluminum Corp. of China (ACH) was another beauty of a pick!! Even after giving back a good chunk of its gains since Wednesday, it still totals a very handsome 4.68%!! Nice stock, Pete! Strong sales growth, 1.94 P/E, 12.8% dividend! Wow!
Johnny JBlaze Storm's pick this week, Barrier Therapeutics (BRTX), makes topical ointments for diaper rash, which it gave all the rest of us a case of. Great pick, Johnny! You are hereby bedecked with the bronze medal for a beauty of a pick that netted you 3.09% in a rough week!
Riverbabe, you gave ol' Mimo a run for his money, but he still beat you to the bottom of the heap! Boy! Those high-flyers can cut you to ribbons, can't they?
With a -5.02% it was an awful week for the group as a whole. As bad as it seems, it isn't the worst week we've had in the contest. In fact it ranks number 4 on the list of the worst weeks, behind week 19 (-7.71%), week 5 (-5.94%), and week 23 (-5.40%). Maybe we should take odd-numbered weeks off. What do you think?

Rob, welcome to the last week of scorekeeping. It's been a blast. Maybe this coming year you can make a few guest host appearances for skiggles? I hope so.
Just when everyone begins to think that you can't make money in last week's market, Spike comes up with some fresh ideas, and shows us all just how $$$HUGE$$$ he is. Great pick, dude, that stock looks almost as huge as you!
Peter Hansen and Jblaze71, when Spike is on top of his game, there is just no way to beat him. It was a valient effort, especially you Jblaze71, but the 2 of you are only BIG for the week, which is better the the rest of us puny players.
For the last week of the year, Rob, I want to go long on AEIS. Thank you very much and keep up the great work!

Well, they say it's good to get right back on the one that threw you, so unless I find something that I'd rather play, I'm going to go long IMCL. This baby is way oversold, and I believe it has a good chance of bouncing off that double bottom it's hitting right now.

I like your play Blaze but you might want to consider CA$H first and wait until at least 10 am to see which way the wind is going to blow with this stock Tuesday morning. I'm still holding it short from Friday at 7.30 level. But I do still like it short.

Ski,
I agree with your assessment. I might end up hurting Tuesday morning. My thought is that the stock is now at it's upward trending support line. It could catch support there and I will get crushed, but I believe the after hours trading has pierced the support line. Kinda reminds me of SYX from a few months back.
Still trying to get a trading system down and trying to figure out the nuances of TA. Unfortunately this doctoring stuff gets in the way.
Appreciate the input.

Isn't it interesting that Doug's three golds are all grouped together? Not sure what to make of that, but it's strange nonetheless.
BillyJoe McCallister lives up to the name of his stock pick today as he nonchalantly takes a look at the rest of the board and says, "I pass" to the head of the class.
Johnny JBlaze Storm's MAMA gapped up 8.29% this morning, momentarily putting his short position into the negative gain category. But MAMA's euphoria was short-lived as she proceeded to sink, and sink, and sink back to the point where Blaze is still up better than 5%.
Speed Racer so far is placing third in this week's tournament ... BUT ... with a 4.29% increase from yesterday's net gain, he picked up more ground today than anyone else in the race.

Sorry...didn't mean to get so excited, but when I saw it at 20.80, I couldn't help myself. aaaaahahahaaaaa!!!
The Incomparable Uphill Racer is up to his old tricks again as he ignites those afterburners, gaining an additional mind-bending 6.73% today alone!
(Singing ...) MAMA's little Jblaze like short-in', short-in', MAMA's little Jblaze likes short-in for bread. Ho hum, yawwwnnnn .... another 3.71%!
BillyJoe McCallister asked himself, "Should I hold onto IPAS?", thought about it for a spell and said, "I pass." So with a tasty 6.44% gain, Billy bails.
Pete's doin' mighty fine with SNP, a stock that I told Lyehopper to buy about five years ago when it was around $15.
And by George, look at ol' Websman with his 4.34% gain on a stock that he hated a couple days ago. I don't know about the living long bit, but he's surely prospering this week.

p.s. Slight mix-up on the color chart at the bottom. Billy's score should be silver and Pete's the bronze ... and I'm too tired to fix it ... so you can just mentally switch the colors. :)
Wow...that's a pretty telling table, but not surprising. On such a short term basis its hard to pick any real winners. Maybe I'm reading that table wrong, but doesn't it say, why bother with such an insignificant game especially when it yields very little in the way of useful info? Or maybe I'm missing the point all together..ie that this is a game to most here to be played at work?

I think that you're right in your assessment of how most look at the game. My feelings are that I like to own them if I'm going to play them. For a short term swingtrader like myself and some others the one week time period suits our discipline and strategy. Peanuts posted last week that no one was talking about stocks, posting charts, and in general the commentary was light on the stock talk. He, and most everyone except JBlaze and Whiz, missed two great opportunities in the short play on MAMA and the long positions on MED and AOB. I made several posts on each over the course of the last 8/9 days and not a peep out of anyone. Personally I could care less about winning the POTW but owning them, even if someone else wins that week like with MAMA and MED, when they are in the green is worthwhile. Up 2.41 with the MAMA short play and still holding and up 1.90 with MED which I exited Friday morning. Now looking for another entry in MED on Tuesday.
It's really only a game and probably should be looked at in that mannner, but in reality there are alot of decent selections in that group of stocks if one takes the time to access them properly. Pete brought MAMA to the game and to my attention thru the POTW. I have 2000 shares of it short from 7.30. You have to be happy with that and it came directly out of the POTW. Thank you Pete and Happy New Year.
What I am concerned about is the slackening of commentary on stocks in general whether it be technical or fundamental in nature. It seems that the space is being taken up more and more with general conversation threads which is good if that is what you want this site to evolve into but I miss the specific stock talk and the volume of it that we have had in the past. People will lose interest in anything if they are not getting what they are looking for in anything they spend their time on. The writing could be on the wall.
JBlaze,
Congrats on a great win. I was rooting for you all week. I can only wish that the percentages had been higher. Billyjoe and Pete. Great plays this week. Congrats to both of you. Pete, thanks for bringing such a great play to my attention with MAMA!

I think the info in the scorecard is very useful.... It proves that it's difficult to make consistant (average) gains when short term trading and when trading many different stocks.... Rob came out on top with the best overall average this year and he (nearly) always played stocks he owned and played the same three or four stocks pretty much all year.... btw, Rob also had the most #1 finishes too.... Personally, I've learned alot from this "useless" contest....
But all-in-all the POTW is indeed "just a game".... I think it's fun to play and it's satisfying to attempt to pick a real short term mover (long or short)....
Thanks for the HUGE! effort this year Rockin'Rob.... And to all who took the time to play and contribute your well researched picks....
I hope the POTW will continue to prosper under Peanuts watch and maybe we'll all fare better next year!

Congratulations to JBlaze and Peter Hansen and thanks to Rob, Ski, Lye ,and everyone who helped keep this thread going especially the contestants of whom there must have been at least 30 different people throughout the past year. I'm sure Peanuts will keep this thing going and improve upon it. He's certainly got more energy than me and a couple more of you old codgers. I won't mention any names. Ok, Peanuts.........on to greatness.

Billyjoe,
You had a great idea when you started the POTW thread and the proof is in the pudding. Look at how it has grown in the number of contestants playing each week. Lye and Rob really deserve most of credit for building it into what it is today. A number of us were custodians for short periods of time but it was their ingenuity that put it over the top especially Lye's determination in building up the player base during his tenure.
I think Peanuts and his natural exhuberance will provide more than enough new ideas and sustainable interest to keep it going. We should all try to contribute more to the POTW and Ernie's site in the hope that it will continue to thrive and grow as it has up to this point.
BillyJoe finishes out the year in passive-aggressive style as he regains 2nd place by doing absolutely nothing!!!
Oops! I need to make a correction! BillyJoe didn't sit the rest of the contest out. At 12:28 p.m. he went long AAPL at 85.07!
AAPL closed at 84.84, giving Billy a loss of 0.27%, taking his net total to 6.17% instead of the 6.44% as reported.
Sorry about that, Billy. The good news is that it didn't change the standings, and you still won the silver in the final week. :)

What cruise are you going on? We are going on The Diamond Princess to Mexico from 1/13 to 1/20...This will be our 19th cruise but our first on Princess...There are good deals in January.
We are also going on a 4 night cruise in May from L.A. to Vancouver on the Sapphire Princess. Great deal as they reposition for the Alaska season. Then we'll spend a couple of days in Vancouver and fly home.
I've got some tricks to get cheap prices on cruises if anyone is interested...Doug

If you absolutely MUST play an ETF, then do it. It is a stock-picking contest, so be prepared to get poked and prodded, made fun of and laughed at, repeatedly crushed and maimed, or tarred and feathered if you decide to play an ETF.
How exciting

I was just looking for a clarification of the rules since you are now the rulemaster. Rule #4 was alittle vague and I was just looking for a clearer definition of the rule which you so aptly provided. You should change the wording of that rule to specifically state that ETF's are allowable and fair plays according to the rulemaster and then you wouldn't have to go thru that spiel ever again. But thanks for the clarification an I look forward to the consequences of playing my first ETF when it comes to that.

Not in my mind an especially if you play the strong sector ETF's I think you would do quite well percentage wise over the long term. As Peanuts stated, "it would only take a 1.34% gain per week to double your initial $1000". I don't think that is a prohibitive gain per week to accompolish average wise if you only played the strong sector ETF's. They usually don't move as much as the stocks in their basket but they are more predictable than the stocks themselves. I had a great year with them this past year and owned at least several different ones throughout the year as sector rotation cycled. I've held GLD since last May and it's up close to 37% from my entry. I can appreciate not allowing the pink sheet and bulletin board stocks but the ETF's and HLDR's are quite different and much more like the stocks on the DIA and the Nasdaq.
I don't think you would come in first many weeks but overall you would do well and better than the average just picking stocks.

My point was that being in stocks in the strongest sectors and groups within those sectors puts the edge in your favor. Any edge in your favor makes sense to me and trading stocks within the strong sectors at any given time makes sense to me. The ETF's or HDLR's for those sectors are usually more predictable than the stocks themselves. It's just more ammo in your arsenal. But to each his own.

Indeed. I don't recall exact figures, but I remember a study that found the majority of a stock's gain/loss was due to sector and overall market direction; i.e a rising tide lifts all boats.

Use options and limit risk. Example: last quarter RIMM was selling a $75 option at $1.10 the day before earnings. The stock was then $73.75 or so. For $110 you could have participated in the run up for a $6500 gain (per contract).
For $110 you could have participated in the run up for a $6500 gain (per contract). You also risk a 100% loss of that $110 investment, or at least a high percentage of it assuming the tide turns against you, and you manage to get out in a timely manner. That's the trouble with playing options vs. the underlying stock itself. Sure, stocks can lose it all too, but virtually always giving you a very long time to escape with a sizable portion of your initial investment intact.
Here are the results for the 2006 POTW, with each player's totals compounded at the end of each week. Of course, a lot of players near the bottom are there because of non-participation and the 5% weekly penalty.

Dragnet? Isn't that what they pull behind the tug boats when some jaggoff jumps off the Roberto Clemente Bridge?
Where'd you get that super cool black and white photo? :D

At the time of this posting, you have 45 minutes to place a pick for this week if you haven't done so already and want to avoid a 3% penalty for the week.

Here are the results for the 2006 POTW, with each player's totals compounded at the end of each week. Of course, a lot of players near the bottom are there because of non-participation and the 5% weekly penalty.

Congrats Rob, Gator, Gwhiz, Jblaze and IIC for a fine performance in the POTW this year, and thanks again, Rob, for keeping the show going in such fine fashion.
I guess it goes to show you just how tough it is to beat the market on a consistent basis. I was hoping to beat it with AMLN, or at least finish in the green, but alas, it was not to be. But I'm not alone, as only 4 contestants out of around 50 managed to beat the indices. Even Doug's solid 15% gain lost to the Dow's 18%. And only 2 of those people did it for an entire year's worth of POTW play. Congrats again, Rob and Gator... you two are
HUGE!!!

I find it very ironic that Meta Financial, ticker CASH, is doing so well this week.
If there was ever a time to mess up a CA$H entry, this week would have been ideal. Sometimes mistakes can be good, too.

Curious as to why you don't sort in order of highest + percentage to lowest - percentage. It seems easier to get the whole picture in that order. I see that you are doing it alphabetically by nickname.

I track the players through Yahoo! Unfortunately, no matter how many times I make the suggestion to them, there is no sorting function for the portfolios. At the end of the week, I'll do something different, but the day to day stuff is going to be like this. It's easiest this way, for now.
I really hate when my ideas are ignored when I send them to the company. I swear, they must never read the suggestions. Either that, or a Chimp is reading everything and making the decisions.
