POG long
AOGC long (are these cheapies still accepted)
AOGC has the cleanest financials I've ever seen... nothing but nothing's on those books! Must be a pure volatility play, eh? POG looks great to me though- if oil keeps marching on up like it has been, you're going to be sweeping the floor with us.
Anyway, for this week I'll take:
PENN long
BRKA long
MEA_1956

POG === You do know they are up for sell don't you. I sold out awhile back for I thought the IDEA of trading a stock that is only going to sell for a certian price is just a little risky. ===> M.E.A.

Thanks guys. Close week overall. I do own HTRN but no money in the pocket yet. Still all on paper but Monday a.m. I'll be placing a stop at around 11.75 to insure at least a .75 gain on the trade. Briefing.com had a nice article about the stock today on their wire. I captured it and tried to upload it to here but had a problem with the upload. Still working on it and can't figure out what changed since yesterday but can't get anything to upload. Anyone else having problems with their uploads?

HTRN is just getting started and still alot of gas left in the tank. ADBE's recent pullback on Friday is the perfect opportunity for entry. JBL still has plenty left in the tank. I'm more bearish than bullish right now which kind of contradicts my long choices. The thing is that the markets haven't convinced me of a bearish trend completely yet. I'm still only in one position HTRN but ADBE is strong an I would take a position in the am on any gap up that holds after the first half hour. ADBE would be my pick of the week at this level.

Spike, you have your horns on but going short with the whole portfolio?? Whats going on??Well, the reasoning is simple; every one of these stocks has the ability to move independantly of the broader market. Happens all the time; market will rally, but a weak stock won't move or will fall. Then when the market corrects that same stock will drop with extra volatility. I could be absolutely wrong, just like last week :D But it's fun thinking outside the box anyway.

Spike, I commend you for your picks. You stated somewhere that your perception was Bullish for this week, but you saw set- ups on the short side and so you traded what you saw. For this you have been rewarded nicely.
If it is true that the trend is our friend then what has been the trend for 2005 thus far?
Spike, if you, indeed, open all of those positions, then I TRUELY congratulate you. Of course, you wouldn't need me to congratulate you, when your account is doing that :D

Yep - fortune favors the brave I guess :) Plus the trend has been down. I just look at the first 4 days of the year and shake my head that it's foreboding a down year this year.
Spike, if you, indeed, open all of those positions, then I TRUELY congratulate you. :Dlol no way! You know me, I'm very picky about my entries; I don't just open 5 blanket shorts while I'm bullish! But just to compete in the competition I'll have a go and do it - all for the fun. I just got lucky this week.

I Made 20 Bucks!!!
Wooooohoooooo!!!!
Nice Job Spike...Me, well I was mildly surprised that 1966 did not hold...I had my first losing week in my short term account since February...but damage was minimal...I have been trading long on the theory that no matter what the market does...some groups are always moving. The reason is that I always felt that market direction was "King"...but this year it is so BLAH...so I was looking for something else...So far...So Good.
BTW: Anyone think the Naz Comp. was an "Island Bottom" today?
BTW: Anyone think the Naz Comp. was an "Island Bottom" today?
I hear what you're saying, but we need at least one more day to determine that, right?
I look at it like this: When pessimism runs rampant, that's where the bottom occurs. That's a proven fact. However, this site has a lot of rather intelligent traders (i.e. "smart money"), who are typically ahead of the curve. Heck, Spike had on the bull horns until today.
I just have to wonder, if the collective realization of the "smart money" is just now bearish, then how much is the rest of the investment community lagging? Is there a downside? Painful as it seems, we're talking about only 15% for the Naz, and about 10% or less for the Dow, and two S&P's.
I think this correction may have a ways to go. According to your thread, we're just about out of support points (1898 being the end of it). Best case I believe is a turnaround Monday, then a gap up Tuesday. That would form the island, but I'm not betting on it.

Nice job Spike,
I think we still have a lot of optimism out there also, one item that makes me think this way is that whenever we have a bit of down times, I hear so many talking about this is only a trading range, we will have a nice bounce back, this is just a soft patch, this is only a correction and a mild one at that.
This doesn't seem like pessimism until there are more looking for further declines rather than a bottom or correction.
But with healthcare, utilities, and reits being the only etf's that were up, it seems as though we have a few more weeks of rotation. Big money can't rotate in one week.
I've got to join Spike on the short side this week.
Great going Spike. How did you choose these stocks? I am unable to make any decent dart throws In a month. So I entered my holdings and you saw what happened to them. So now I must start all over again. Still hanging on to Blud but not sure I know why?

We're going to need at least one more day, Monday, to determine whether it's going to be an island bottom or not an then that would actually be a trailing indicatior, but I don't think that it matters if it is an island bottom or not right now. The fact of the matter is that both the DOW, NASDAQ, and the S&P 500 have all dropped a considerable amount over the last 2/3 weeks. I've been saying this for awhile now that it's a subtle thing when they start trending down like this. One step forward, to give a little hope, and then the big money sells off into any strength the next day or two to take a bigger step backward
than the up day. The next thing you know their down over a hundred on the NAZ an over 700 on the DOW. Look at both charts and they look like ski slopes, especially the DOW. When you lose that big of a percentage there has to be something in the wind. Definitely big money unwinding positions in anticipation of the economy turning for the worse. God knows there are alot of fundamental factors wrong with ours and the worlds economy but drops like this are strong signals that this is the way that the wind is blowing.
Trying to guess or make some determination as to what is going to take place tomorrow or next week isn't going to work and taking any positions on the hope that we may have found a bottom is only going to get you in more trouble. I think we can only wait it out to see how it developes over the course of the next few days or week or so.
In the meantime it's a good time to get a list of the current and past leaders and strong issues that have gotten beaten down by this recent drop. They will be the leaders again when whatever is going on reverses and turns back up. Actually it's a good thing that this cycle happens like this because it provides a great buying opportunity to get into a number of good stocks at a much cheaper price. The only requirement is that you must exercise caution an emotional control over your trading until we get a clear signal to jump back in on the long side. In the meantime as long as it continues to trend down there are going to be shorting opportunities setting up but at this point in time it's getting alittle late for that also. So it's a volitaile limboish, just coined that word, time
that we're in. Best to exercise extreme control over your need for the action.

Thanks all for the congrats :)
IIC: Nope, I don't think it's an island bottom today on Naz. Not a single day island bottom anyway.... the market has some serious work to do. $VIX P&F Pattern just had a quadruple top breakout yesterday, with a projected target of 31.50. Usually, increasing volatility is accompanied by selling. So just say VIX goes on a fast tear to 31.50 in the following weeks, then the market is going to get hammered. Just look at the last time VIX went on a bullish tear; May, June, July of 02. We all remember how fast price fell then. Is history going to repeat? Lord knows of course. Right now, it is a very logical possibility. But maybe VIX is just going to spike and reverse, one may argue. OK, great, yes, that's also a logical possibility. We cannot possibly know what's going to happen; we can just plan for it. If your retirement is long the market right now I think it's foolish. There are times to seek shelter from an looming storm, times to put investments into safe harbors; now is one such time. Don't wait for an 'uppy', don't wait and see what happens, don't try to get cute with it. There are times to be bullish; now is not one of them. My humble opinion of course :D My current bias is bear, and I think we are in for a lot more down, possibly weeks of it. The question is just how volatile it will be.
VIX chart here (http://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/SharpChartv05.ServletDriver?chart=$vix,pltad%5Bpa% 5D%5Bda%5D%5Bf%213%21%21%5D&pnf=y)
Drutzen: Credit to ya for picking an absolutely monster this week with GGR. I'm sure if you had the option you would have locked in profits on that one. That's the difficulty of this competition. One must be pick stocks that will end the week strong, not just Monday and Tuesday! You've got to be right for the whole week. I wonder if we'll ever want to change that; where people can elect to take profits during the week. That would make it a lot more work but probably more real. Luck has a lot to do with our competition, which may be a good thing of course :D
RL: I picked 'em using channels!! :D
TZOO: weekly channel long failure a while back; daily channel failure earlier this year; and a recent channel turn down that I chased.
SGTL: daily channel long failure in late March from 30.20 low; followed by a channel short on April 7.
SNRR: I think it was yaoyao that brought this one to my attention and channels set up bearish for that one too; then channel turn down April 8 - but silly stock bulled up when it set me up for a short :D
RATE: I've been watching this one on and off for a while; weekly channel short a couple weeks ago, then daily channel short late March and channel turn down the week before the competition.
WLK: recent daily channel long failure, and also a lower channel tag with price continuing to slip after it. It looked real slippery channel-wise, and I chased the bearish continuation.
They all looked really weak despite my bullish perspective last week, so I took 'em betting they'd fall well on any weak market days. Turned out my bias was completely wrong this week, and they fell very nicely during a weak market. :D
(BLUD careful on the long side with that one - it's looking bearish triple toppish to me; channel turn down is about to happen and that may nail it)
Best to all and good luck next week.
I guess I didn't really understand what an Island Bottom was...never paid attention to it before...Just came to mind when I looked at the Naz Chart.
Here is a Stockcharts code to see some examples:
[type = stock] and [daily sma(20,daily volume) > 1000] and [2 days ago close < 2 days ago ema(10,close)] and [yesterday's high < 2 days ago low * 0.975] and [yesterday's low != yesterday's high] and [today's low > yesterday's high * 1.025]

Spike,
Congratulations on the resounding win. I agree with you on your premise of being able to move in an out of positions to take some profit out during the week. It would take alot more work on someone's part to run it under those guidlines but would be like operating under more real conditions. It's still alot of fun the way it is now though and much better than nothing at all.
Thanks much Spike for the warning on Blud. I'm out first thing Mon, been geting uneasy with It any way.

RL,
I owned BLUD a couple years ago, never timed it right and didn't make any $ , but somebody did after I sold. Always have problems with any medical related stocks. I think CMN is the only one that really was profitable for me. Glad I got out at 15%. Your darts are overdue for some good hits and when it happens it's good news for us all.

short EPAX: bearish double top, channel short in March with recent narrow range, and channel turn down last week. Reports Monday so maybe add some fuel to the hot embers laying there.
short RSH: weekly bear flag and potential 5th wave down. Also reports and sets up for bad news.
short SLR: chasing a weekly channel turn down after a very bearish lower channel break down from the declining channel from the top.

Thanks Skiracer!
And might I add, you did a fantastic job yourself!
Webs wins... that is FASCINATING.
Way to Go Webs :)
'Ya know...I can handle coming in last in the contest...but I'll tell 'ya...CNTY was the stupidist real trade I've made this year. Not because I bot it...But because I did not sell it at my stop point. I think I had a bout of temporary insanity or something.
My sell point after the first day was 9.35. I paid 9.85...it did go way down that day but it came back and closed strong...then I was 1.06 up a few days later...then it pulled back...then EPS and announcements came out on Monday...For some "wacko" reason I held on(and there were plenty of opps to get out w/ a reasonable loss) I held on and sold in the 8.30's. I was moderately heavy in it in my short term account.
But, big blunders happen once in a while. I believe the "key" is to not get all upset about a big mistake. On Monday night I said to myself that I intend to get it all back by Thursday...not by taking big chances, but by simply trading my regular way. Well, I did it...As of yesterday I was green in that account for the week by making regular $$$ amount trades(some are more $$$ than others based on my plan)...and today was pretty good as I lost a little on ABLE but I made $1.82 sh on PRAA.
Anyway, I would hardly call this week a stellar week...but it was good in that I didn't panic...there are commonly 2 things that happen when traders make a big mistake(or a series of mistakes)...I've been guilty of both myself in the past...1) They reduce their trading amounts...in which case they miss opportunities...2) They start trading larger $$$ to try and get it back quick...Rarely does either way work IMO...The whole point is "Don't let mistakes get under your skin"...IIC

I've been out of the POTW contest for awhile, but I'm going to submit back to back entries this time.
AMHC: Recently had an all time high. Its in a leading industry. Health care companies are attractive in uncertain economic times because they are non-cyclical. From a website I read:
"AMHC is a player in disease management, a rapidly growing industry that is driven both by demographics and by legislative changes in the Medicare program. Disease management is an art and a science that is complementary to acute medical procedures and applies to the care of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, kidney disease and osteoporosis, among others. American Healthways works with patients to make them better informed about their condition, more motivated to participate in their own care, and more cooperative in regard to their prescribed treatment protocol. Managing the treatment lowers the costs to everyone and prevents hospital re-admissions, which are the main cost culprit in disease treatment. In short, the company profits from the trend towards cutting costs by limiting access to treatments that at least the insurance industry and some Federal programs consider non-essential. Statistics show that approximately 70% of health care outlays in this country are generated by just 10% of the patient population, so HMO organizations are highly focused on "managing" that 10%. Furthermore, patients with chronic conditions are in this group because statistically they are more likely to become lax in regard to their own care. American Healthways provides a win-win in this particular situation, improving patient care by encouraging more and earlier treatment for this group, which reduces long-term costs to the healthplan providers."
Why buy right now? Revenue growth up 32% last quarter. Recent all time high. Net Income up 60%. Eight consecutive quarters where client numbers increased over 100% quarter over quarter. With a 19% short interest, it will provide plenty of fuel when the shorts cover.
Second pick: INSP
Another pick from a hot group. Online advertising IS the future, and the future is starting RIGHT NOW. Just look a google's and yahoo's recent earnings reports and investor's response to them. Business is booming. Infospace operates Dogpile.com and WebCrawler.com, two well known search engines. Total paid searches during the fourth quarter increased 32%, while revenue per search shot up 27%. While sales for the search and directory division increased 66%, sales in the company's mobile unit soared 250% (due to new web enabled cell phones and faster 3rd generation cell phone networks). In 2004, sales rose 89% to $249 million, and profits rang the register at $82 million, compared to a loss a year-earlier. Excluding a one-time gain on the sale of the company's Payment Solutions business, earnings came in at $1.40 per share. Over the past four quarters InfoSpace has beat the Street by an average of 68%.
Wither either of these two perform well in the next week or not is not really the point. For me, they are great investments because they lead their industries and their industries are leading the markets. Both have incredible financial fundamentals and in my opinion are the cream of the crop in the markets where there is no rising tide that lifts poorer stocks.

I'm looking at this week as the b leg or 2nd leg (up leg) within an abc correction. My feelings are that we are in a downtrend and will be trending somewhat further down from here. Within all of this there will be uptrends and downtrends but the trend will be to lower highs and lows. One step forward, to get the retail guys optimistic and in and two backward as the smart money sells off into any strength they can.
I'm not saying you can't trade these markets but you will have to be nimble, quick, and unemotional. These downtrends are subtle and before you know it the drop has been 600 points in the DOW and 80 in the NAZ which is exactly what we have just experienced over the past several weeks. Like the Elliot Wave there will be peaks and valleys. Our job will be to trade the waves in the right directions as they change. Just my opinion but I think this week will be a long week overall on that 2nd or B wave in this overall correction. Hold my account open Billyjoe I might be adding another one or two the more I convince myself that this is going to be a long week.

Ok, I'm ready to defend my title.
I'm going short on all of my picks again.
Here are my picks and the reason I picked them:
1. IPIX - I made money by going long on this one last year. Now it's dead in the water.
2. MSO - Martha may have violated her probation. Could she be headed back to the joint? Uh oh...Watch out MSO shareholders!
3. KKD - I love their donuts, but they tend to put unwanted weight on me. Besides, they're on the edge of bankruptcy. KKD is going down for the count.
So there you go. Three big losers... IPIX, MSO, and KKD

IIC,
That's a compliment. I want mine to gap up on Monday every time I purchase on the previous Friday, but it rarely happens.

The one's that gap up are usually news based and I think they will continue. I enter another contest every week where you use the closing price on Friday...but if any news comes out from the Friday close to the Monday open you get the gap price if it's over 5%. But here you use the opening price so it doesn't matter.
Anyway, my 3 pix this week are based on the chart patterns. I found CHD when I was running my Cup w/ Handle scan yesterday...I was going to list it as a CwH but the p/v is not correct...although some of the others I listed are not "Classic" either.
TALX has a flag thing going on and PGIC blew out the 10 21 and 50 sma's on Friday. PGIC also has some excellent EPS projections. I did not search for news on any of them although I will tonight...Good Luck To All...Hope I don't repeat as the worst this week...IIC

Who's flying under the radar? I know HTRN reported a strong qtr. but the way they report nowadays doesn't always give the sense of how good or bad they really did. I think they beat estimates and guidance but not sure by how much. That will play a factor on tomorrows action. Could be a big day but so much depends on how the institutional money takes the report.

Websman, you also could win especially if IPIX takes a dump. Actually about 5 different contestants are serious contenders. A few others have some great picks that were negated by one big loser.

Thanks Everybody...
Dang, I feel like Joe Namath and Super Bowl III...I was very humiliated by ending up in the cellar last week...OK...Can I go for a Two-Peat??? We'll see.
I didn't actually buy any of my pix...but overall, I had my best week this year on the short term account and WITS was good...even though I was surprised at the reaction to the EPS...I thought it would be flat or maybe even temporarily retreat.
Today I traded APCC late for an OK gain...but this morning I traded MCRS which I just happened to see on my CwH list at the open. Went in on the p/b when it started moving again off of 36.50. Trimmed off and just kept watching it. Trimmed again for a real nice gain. Then I had to go shower. Just before I was ready to leave I set a fairly wide stop. Before I shut down it had a shakeout and I was stopped .17 below my price....Look at a 5 min chart and you can easily see when I got stopped. It came back later...but overall it was a nice one.
Congrats, Doug. Especially with your actual portfolio amid this rough market.

Maybe whatever I decide on long or short, right before I post it I will change to the opposite. lol
Thanks.

Dmk112,
Maybe it would be a good idea to put stops in. Because my brain can't stand a lot of calculating, lets have the stops all at the same % maybe 7 or 8. Just state "use stops " and stock will automatically be frozen at that point. It will be an option. To eliminate controversy, if my quote site says the low at any time during the day hit the magic number and contestant said "use stops" it will be applied. I'll miss some of those 20 - 30 % drops, however.

I don't like that idea...I thought we were picking stocks that we thought would end up (if we go long) for the week. On the Naz your stop becomes a market order if the best bid is at or below your stop...Unlike the NYSE when your stop does not become a market order unless the stock trades at or below your stop.
So...who's gonna watch the bids in R/T all week???
I had this happen to me in Jan 2004...I was on a cruise in MX...And I don't feel like checking my records to see exactly what happened right now...But I placed a stop on RATE and then went ashore. When I got back I saw I was stopped out. But as I recall it was about 14...I placed a stop at about 13.38. It never went that low...but my stop filled at 13.52 and 13.60...I was ticked...but when I got back home I found out that the best bid had been 13.37 at one time...Or so they say.
MCRS...I announced to the world on the chats that I placed a "Wide" stop on my remaining shares yesterday at about 12:05pm EDT...look at a chart and see what happened. Now I'm not gonna say that I invest big enough dollars to influence anyone or anything in my Cash Account...But it sure was strange.
Actually though...I do trade with others who can influence stock prices on lower volume issues. An example was TAXI in 2003. My trading partner bot over 10% of the days vol. near the close...I had bot it a few mins earlier. She drove the price up and then bailed in the first 10 mins the following day. She didn't even realize that she was doing that...I IM'd her the first afternoon and told her she was crazy...Get out in the morning...And when she did...it tanked. Fortunately, I did too...relatively unscathed...IIC

IIC,
I wasn't thinking about NAZ. You're right , this should be as realistic as possible and it won't be if the bids can't be watched which I can't do. Guess we're back to the way it was.

That potential triple top on the daily could get sold awfully quick. Intraday there's a bearish hourly candle today; a failed bullish ascending triangle, and if the intraday inverted SHS fails, I think FORD could find some heavy profit-taking this afternoon. The intraday action ain't what I'd expect from a stock that's bullish at new yearly highs.....but then again, it's a bad market day.
But one thing in your favor is the channel turn up on the daily......now if it can just close that way for ya I'll be all bull :D

Well only the 8th best in this case. This coming week I was thinking of seeing how everyone felt about limiting the selections to up to 4 picks due in by Sunday night sometime around midnight. I don't know where Billy Joe got the initial prices for the open on Monday morning and the closing prices each daybut I use Stockcharts.com realtime charting and whatever prices they state for the open on Monday and the close each day should be good enough for everyone I hope. They would be the most convienent an easiest spot for me to work with. Any other suggestions or other sites would be ok with me but please voice your opinions. I was thinking that to give it alittle spice I would insert the option of exiting your initial positions on Wednesday if you wanted to make a change for whatever reasons. Certainly not if they're going good. I'd like to keep it as simple as possible but I'm open to any other suggestions we might want to plug in to give it alittle boost an add something different to the mix. So if anyone has something quirky they might want to add speak up, the sooner the better, just so we get it set as to what we want to do as soon as we can.
WTG Drutzen. Does this put you in the elite two win class?
Using the open and close at Stockcharts is fine with me...Yahoo has them too.
As far as exiting...I don't know how you were planning this...but if you don't have a plan, here's an idea...At any time from the open Monday till "before" the close on Wednesday a contestant could post here that they want to sell a pick(or cover). You would use the closing price on Wednesday.
No one could rescind their decision; e.g. I post on Monday that I want out...my stock takes off on Tuesday and Wednesday...I cannot change my mind...I get the closing price on Wednesday.
Just a thought...whatever you decide is OK by me...IIC
Sky your the boss what ever you do I'm In.

Just a thought, but have you even tried one of those simulation websites. Not sure if this would be a good idea but then you could have the contestants trade in and out of positions and the one with the most cash at the end of the week would be victorious, and be the huge one!!
This site is free and starts with I think 100K

Runner,
When I was a posting participant over at the IBD forum they had started a stock contest. It evolved into using that site as the base for entering an exiting your trades. The website stated that they were realtime and could keep everything current as far as each individuals portfolio over the month that the contest ran. It couldn't have been farther from the truth. You would enter or exit a trade and wouldn't know for half an hour whether or not you got the trade or were out of the position at the price you wanted. I quit the contest after the first hour when I tried to enter my initial positions and never got any confirmation of entry. I don't think it would be a good idea to use them in any fashion. I kind of like Doug's idea and how he put it. That would be fine with me exactly as he posted. Any refinements on his theme would be welcome an up to the group for final consideration an approval. I would like to add some spice to the game but also would like to keep it as simple as possible if we can. Keep the ideas coming. We have until late tomorrow afternoon or early evening. You won't hear from me tomorrow during the daytime at all as I will be in Gettysbury, PA for college graduation ceromonies for my niece but will be back around 9 pm. Be here all night tonight. Thanks guys for the imput.

I third Doug's idea, with an added twist. How about:
In addition to being able to close at market price Wed, you get to pick limits and/or stops to go with the pick, so if they hit, you're out. Wed night, anyone with cash from a closed position would get to re-evaluate and make another pick or set of picks for that cash to be bought/sold at the open Thursday. This lets the "trade with a plan" crowd do their thing.
I'll start with a pick of DRRA long, no stop, limit sell at 4.14 if my proposed method is ratified by the committee.

I think that is a good idea and would go along with it. The only suggestion I would add if we try that would be to limit the number of initial picks on Sunday to 3 and 3 again on Wednesday if you close out or get stopped out on all your initial picks. 3 picks vs 4 picks doesn't seem like a big difference but keeping track of everything will be a little easier in that sense. No big deal one way or another. My wife is still going to think I spend way to much time with the computer and stocks when I could be sitting on the couch with her watching TV and rubbing her feet.
Ski hope you keep It simple as you know I throw darts no ta or fund just let me know when I must have my picks In and how many.

Here are the particulars for the game this week.
1. Limit of 3 picks. Must be in before 11 pm tonight.
2. No limit orders on the initial entry prices which will be the quote from the realtime charts at Stockcharts.com for Monday. You get the entry either long or short from that quote.
3. You can set a stop anytime during the day or night thru Wednesday until 3 pm. Once you place the stop it's in concrete and if the stock hits the target stop or goes below it according to Stockcharts realtime charts low for the day you're out of the position at the stop price. If the stop isn't triggered before the close on Wednesday you will have the option to either leave it in place or remove it after the close on Wednesday.
4. You can sell a position by putting in a sell order. If you place a sell order during market hours it must be before 3 pm and you get that days closing price. If you put a sell order in after the close Monday or Tuesday you get the opening price the following morning on Stockcharts realtime charts.
5. If you sell off any position Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday you can buy a new position or up to 3 new positions after the close on Wednesday but before 11 pm Wednesday night, but you can only buy the same number of new positions that you sold off up to the limit of 3.
6. The 2nd half of the week will work just like the 1st half. You can sell off positions to limit your losses up to 3 pm Friday.
This should offer some diversity an yet keep it somewhat simple. Any questions please ask. Bon Appetite and good luck to everyone.

Guys,
The reason I was opposed to limit orders, for buying and selling, is that I think it would be to hard to make the detemination as to whether or not you got the buy or sell at the precise limit you placed it at.

Never too late for you or anyone else here. Just trying to get everyone in by the time us old cats have to climb into bed and get our beauty rest. And that's a real good point Spike. I guess the latest time would be for those guys out west in the Mountain and Pacific regions. Forgot about the time zones. Us people on the east coast don't think about the rest of the country. After all the markets are in NY. Never a problem. Sorry. Yours an everyone else's are definitely in as long as they are time stamped before the market open. No problemo. Good luck.
I had a long day yesterday and won't get a chance to get all the picks together until after dinner tonight so the daily report won't be posted until after 7/8 pm tonight. Mondays are always a busy one for me getting everyone started after the weekend. Never know what to expect from my guys after the weekend.

Well...I read the rules twice...maybe I should read them again...LOL...I think I'll just stick with BABY all week...It might be different if there was an actual cash prize...Come to think of it, that's not a bad idea...How about 10 grand a week to the winner and a special 100 grand bonus to the one who wins the most weekly contests during the year.
Maybe the Google ads can fund the whole thing ;)
I missed the whole day today...$^%&*( job!!!

Well I know you're all sitting on the edge of your seats waiting for the first days results. Long day for me today. Just finished the tabulations. Spike, did my mom give you that picture of me. I thought she was the only one who had one. Sometimes lately I feel just like that. In alphabetical order:
Coachgbw:
IIJI: entry; 4.55 close; 4.57 +.02 or +.004%
Drutzen: NVDA: entry; 25.03 close; 25.42
+.39 or +.02%
IIC: BABY: entry; 9.21 close; 9.45 +.24 or +.03%
Jiesen: DRRA: entry; 3.69 close; 3.57 -.12 or -.03%
Ray Long: NNI: entry; 34.75 close; 36.36 +1.51 or +.04%
ONXX: entry; 27.07 close; 27.29 +.22 or +.01%
IFSIA: entry; 6.83 close; 7.00 +.17 or +.02%
Rickflyboy: HAL: entry; 40.90 close; 40.70 -.20 or -.005%
Skiracer: HTRN: entry; 12.13 close; 12.26 +.13 or +.01%
CMTL: entry; 36.01 close; 36.10 +.09 or +.002%
VTIV: entry; 19.00 close; 19.55 +.55 or +.03%
Spikefader: short IBM; entry; 73.09 close; 74.34 +1.25 or -.02%
I did the mathematics under some duress. I'm sure I got all the numbers for entries and closing prices correct but there could be a discrepancy in the percents as I was working fast to get it done. Post your sell orders or stops as you want. If you notice a discrepance in any of your selections or my calculations let me know asap an I'll go back and make the necessary changes.

Guys,
None of these rules are written in stone. It's everyone's contest an if anyone comes up with a viable or better more interesting idea to make it better please do. I tried to make it as simple as could be while giving it a little more diversity at the same time. We can add or change anything you guys want to if the idea holds water an isn't too complicated.
After Monday it looks like Ray Long and myself are atop the leaders board with Ray up .07% on his 3 picks and me up .06% with my 3 picks. We'll see what today brings. Looks like everyone is satisfied with their positions as there were no overnight changes sell orders or stops placed.

Still no stops or sell orders and tomorrow is Wednesday. Lets open it up until tomorrow morning anytime before the open for closing any existing positions an opening any new ones.

Guys,
If I made a mistake it was an honest one an made unknowingly. But where is the mistake? Could you please explain your point to me? As soon as possible so that I can rectify and bring the results up to date. Thanks. Ok, I see what you mean. Here's how I was looking at it. Ray is up 3% and 5% on two of his trades and down .1% on the third trade. I see it as being up 7.9 % in the account. If we had equal amounts of money in each trade and the trades were up proportionally then where is the discrepancey. Did you think we should divide his three trades by 3 to get the average?

Sorry, but I'm a stupid shit. Just looked at the percentages up and subtracted the negative one from the pluses and did it quickly that way last night. Never took the time to add up everything and then do the averages. You're right. It looks like Doug is the leader. I'll take the time to do all the addition and subtraction each evening. Sorry about this. Didn't mean to steal your thunder Doug. Whew, I'm glad we're not playing for that $10,000 dollar prize this week.

Like Yogi says, "it ain't over until it's over".
Doug,
I was wondering since you said you were going to protest after the close on Friday, you must not have seen the rule stating, "all protests must be filed in writing, three copies please, and presented to the administrator no later than 3 hours after the close on the day of the disputed fact".
Just kidding and no problem at all. What's right is right and that's all there is to it. Except now Ray will be walking around in a daze saying, "I coulda been the champ".
I'm going to be a little late with the standing tonight as my wife had me planting Leyland Cypress down our property line after work today an I just finished. Also I will be doing extensive calculations on everyone's accounts just so I don't look like I can't add. Actually this type of short changing of the numbers is how I made my first couple of hundred thousand selling encyclopedias when I was a kid.

Here are the results after today. Sorry that I overlooked you yesterday Drutzen but I did straighten it out. Made another mistake with your account yesterday also Ray. NNI was up 1.15 yesterday an my addition and subtraction was wrong. I figured it at +.15 for the day and had you up +1% when it should have been closer to +3%. I straighted that out today also. I think there was something in those mushrooms on the pizza. Can't seem to do the quick calculations in my head anymore. So here are the results for today. Oh BABY Oh BABY. What can we say other than that. At the top of the board for the 3rd day in a row and looking more like a winner with one day left is: drum roll please for #uno.

Well, DRRA has hit my target of 4.14 (or near enough to it anyway) so I'm calling in my profits (imaginary though they may be) right here. As of right now, according to my Scottrader RTQ the price is 4.13, so I'm setting a stop of 4.10. As long as BABY closes at 10.2 or lower today, I should have this thing in the bag!

Jiesen,
Nice move today with DRRA and a well placed stop and manuever on your part. Right now Doug's BABY is at 10.07 down .18 and your DRRA is at 4.36 up .48. It could be an is very close with 22 minutes to go until the close. It appears that one of you will be the winner this week unless a minor miracle of some sort takes place with one of the other entries. I love this stuff when it gets like this. Brings up the level of competition.

Well it seemed like a good idea at the time, but unfortunately I placed the stop either too soon or too high and it was just barely hit prior to the continued strong move later on. So that means I'm stopped out at 4.1 and it's a nail-biter right up to the finish. I'm still ahead by a hair, but BABY is now at 10.04 and it will only take it going above 10.2 to beat me.
We still have 15 minutes left and anything can happen!

I have BABY closing at 10.12 today on Stockcharts 15 minute chart. I haven't done the numbers yet but it looks like Jiesen got stopped out at 4.10 and then DRRA went on to close at 4.49 on the 15 minute chart. Without doing the numbers and BABY closing below 10.20 it looks like Jiesen will be the winner this week. I'll do the calculations now and get back with all the results as soon as I can. Very close.

Very close at the end of the day and week. A nailbiter if you tend to do that. Jiesen tried to give it back to Doug with what looked like a good move initially but almost cost him the win. Oh BABY dropped then came roaring back above 10.20, which would have given Doug the win, but in the last minutes gave back a few cents to close at 10.12 and that sealed the win for Jiesen.
Here are the final tabulations for the week in order of finish. A drum roll for this weeks winner at the wire please:
Numero Uno - Jiesen - DRRA - up 11 %
2. IIC - BABY - up 9.9 %
3. Drutzen - NVDA - up 5%
4. Skiracer - HTRN; CMTL;VTIV - up 4%
5. Ray Long - NNI;ONXX;IFSIA - up 3%
6. Rickflyboy - HAL - up 2%
7. Spikefader - IBM (short) down 4.5%
8. Coachgbw - IIJI - down 9%
I thought this was a good week and fun. It gave me a good insight into what Billyjoe goes through in keeping track of everything. It's not a prohibitive amount of work but it does take up some time everyday. I don't mind doing it and will take it again this coming week if it's ok with everyone else even if some of my math fell short on occassion. If anyone else has some idea of how to make the game more interesting or challenging please fess up with those ideas and we can implement them into next weeks game. Congratulations Jiesen. Is this your 2nd time on top of the leaders board. My only consolation is that I owned all three of those bastards I picked so I had a decent week overall.

Not for anything but I've often wondered if you liked a stock enough to use it in the game why anyone wouldn't take at least a small position in it. Most of the ones that I pick I own at some point during the game or week. Not all of them always but like this week I owned full positions in all three of my selections. Just curious. That's great that you are probably the first 3 time winner. It wouldn't have taken much at 3.69 to have owned at least 1000 share position in the stock. Anyway great pick and it made for an exciting finish to the week. First I thought you had it in your pocket then BABY came roaring back above 10.20 and then gave it back at the wire. IIC must be pulling his hair out. I get a kick out of this stuff. Great game this week and basically everyone did well with their selections. Good luck. When it's exciting like this week it makes for good competition. Looking forward to next week already. Let's get them to keep the markets open 7 days a week.
Jiesen YOU ARE THE HUGE ONE Three wins thats great. I have been trying for a long time to be the first to get there. Now I'm really feeling down. Guess I'll just have to drown my sorrows. Will be out of town for the next contest but I Intend to leave a pick tonite before I leave. Looking for players. I had a real good day today with PARL which I bought Monday morning at 19.75. The reason I bought it and used it as a selection in the game was a breaking news article on Briefing.com's newswire last Friday stating something about another fragrance stock being acquired by another bigger name fragrance stock. The article went on to mention that PARL could bounce on Monday in sympathy to the other acquisition. I know the stock and have done well with it on a couple of other trades over the last 6 months or so. I took a half position, 500 shares, at 19.75 and thought that I had made a mistake when it fell through 19.50. Told myself that I would bail if it broke 19 which it didn't. It opened this morning at 20.22 on no news or anything and kept going up. I guess every dog gets a bone occassionally whether they deserve it or not. I exited the position late this afternoon at 21.85 with a 2.10 gain on the 500 shares. It could go to 25 right now an I could care less with the $1050 gain in my hand. I'm of the midnset that sometimes you have to take the luck and found money when you have it in hand. Watch it continue on to 23 or 24 without me tomorrow. Could I say that would be just my luck? I'm beginning to believe more and more that a large and growing % of traders are now playing the breaking news in their trading. That's what I love about Briefing.com and their realtime newswire. Would you say the $ 29.95 a month subscription fee paid for itself this month.

I must say that I have had a great week with PARL. I also had high expectations for HTRN this week but closed down for the week. Looked like it was going to go off again today as it hit 13.25 but then reversed and sold off to close at 12.72. My entry is at 12.75 so I'm off .03 with it. PARL more than made up for it. I got back in yesterday at 22.65 with another half position and sold it this afternoon at 24.10.
I almost sold HTRN today at 13.20 and wish I had as it ended up weakening and not being able to hold it's gains. Could have taken the gains and re-entered lower than my previous entry of 12.75. It's been having some rather large intraday swings ranging from 12.50 to 13.25 recently. I still like it to go to 15/16 range. I think that the daytraders and momo guys are playing with it and that's why it hasn't been able to hold those gains. Institutional support is way up. I'm going to wait it out until next week and maybe play the intraday swings if it is still happening that way.

We need some fresh blood to come into this game. A couple of the regulars didn't make it this week and we could use some of the irregulars to join in. There are a few out there that are spewing out the picks. Why not throw a couple of those gems into this game. No big deal but it would make for a more interesting situation with several more players. Don't be afraid to have your picks slide on down the drain in front of the rest of us. Maybe they'll go in the other direction and you'll end up winning. Who knows, you might end up the greatest stockpicker in the world next to MM. Anyway there's no work involved an it is nice when you're the one on top of the leader board. I'll handle it again this coming week but it would be nice to have a few more players. Again any suggestions to make it more exciting are welcome.
Have a nice three day weekend everyone and no drinking if you're going to drive. Otherwise sauce it up at those barbequties.

Doug,
Looking forward to seeing you in the game next week. Hope you win this sucker asap.
BJ,
Same goes for you. Hope you win this sucker.
Ray Long,
You've already won this once or twice but good luck this coming week. I have about a dozen strategys that I use. It's really a conglomeration of stuff that I like to see on the charts an in the breaking newswires. Sometimes it clicks and sometimes it doesn't. I usually just exit early when it isn't going the right way. That way I last longer an it seems like I'm doing alright. This week was a good one with PARL. They are not all like that which I'm sure you know.
Having been to war and come home in one piece I pray every day for those guys doing the job wherever they are. We all should be thankful of that, especially this weekend.
I'll be saucing it up this weekend somewhat at a couple of barbeques but I married a designated driver who doesn't like the way I drive even when I haven't had a few drinks. So when we're together I never drive anyway.

With this long weekend it should give everyone a chance to do their research and come up with a few good plays. Looking forward to another week of competition. Let's get a whole bunch of players into this thing.
Mr. Market would also be welcome to provide us with a couple of his own homegrown selections.
I was trying to spice it up somewhat with the few variables I tried to make available. No one used them anyway except for RL once I believe or was it Drutzen. Anyway I agree with Doug about keeping it simple. But it's everyone's game and choice. So let me know what you think about leaving it just the way it is with the few options available or to just go back to picking them and letting them ride out the storm one way or another.
My first pick is SPTN long...IIC

BJ, Don't mean to bore anyone and I guess I could try my crystal ball or go to the top of the mountain and pray to the stock god.But that all of that takes to much concentration and I don't use any type of screening or subscribe to any papers or news letters I think I'll stay with the darts for now. That way I can have a beer now and then while throw them, although throwing the spaghetti on the wall like IIC suggested sounded but I tried that and could read the stocks symbols It covered and my wife Is not happy with the stains I left on the wall.Hope everyone has a good Holiday stay safe.LOL

I have decided to enter.
After careful analysis, which involves complicated Vulcan rationalization techniques that none of you would understand, I have come up with my picks.
I am going long on the following three stocks...
1. ELN - I just happen to own this one for real. I was lucky enough to buy it right before it popped last week. Let's hope it can climb more or I'm doomed.
2. AAI - I lost some money on this piece of ---- earlier this year. I'm sure it'll climb since I don't have real money on it.
3. DWA - It took a big hit this past week. I'm looking for a rebound.
May the best man, woman or Vulcan win!
P.S. No stops for me.
Ski,
Here you go two days early. Have to plant veg. wash the walls & go to a bbq.- Tomorrow parade and spend the day with family. So I,m throwing darts on the fly.

I am going long on the following stock: I'm lucky enough.
I'm doomed. I can't live without her.
AAI - I lost some money on her---but I'm sure she'll climb now. There's no stopping for me. I've just got to have her!
Spock,
AAI--you just can leave her alone, can you? Don't tell me you have Vulcan ears when you have a burning love for her! Truthfully, I hope she turns her head again and walks away (since you don't actually own her, I don't feel guilty about rooting against you). All I can say is this: SPOCK, YOU ARE IN LOVE!

goldilocks economy
A term used to describe the U.S. economy of the mid- and late-1990s as "not too hot, not too cold, but just right." Some economists consider this optimal, and in such situations the government usually decides not to undertake any policy measures to improve macroeconomic (http://www.investorwords.com/2914/macroeconomic.html) performance.
But if you must, you might check this one out:

However, the site below is free and it searches the book

I think everyone knows what the closing prices were on their positions, so I didn't bother posting them. 5 positions in the black, 1 even, and 6 in the red. That's a pretty even distribution for the 12 portfolios. Some pretty big swings in a couple of them. Good luck over the next two days.

1. Drutzen +5%
2. Rickflyboy +3%
3. New-Born +2.7% nicely done for a first time player.
4. Runner +2.2% a tie for 4th place.
Skiracer +2.2%
5. Spikefader +1.9%

This is the end of my current tour of duty with running this. I signed on for a 3 week stint and tried to generate some more interest and participants going into this week an we had a real good showing. Hopefully someone else will step up to take over this coming week and keep the interest and game going. To be honest it takes a good 30 to 45 minutes to keep track of it every night and it's hard to set that time aside with all the other paperwork and things I have to do to keep my businesses and trading running on even keel.
1. DRUTZEN!!! +11.9 % 4th or 5th time!

Thanks all,
I believe that it is only 3 times though.
tossing a coin between PWEI and VPHM again this week.
with a little glance at ABLE and GEOI
for all of you gap believers, VPHM still has two pennies open at 5.13 and 5.14
PWEI looks very good but it is always light volume even in heavy days. smaller float, smaller short shares and smaller institutional ownership, maybe they will start jumping in, but I doubt it, plastics are not exciting right now either, I think this will be more of a steady eddy. I am long PWEI still.
VPHM short interest creeping up, but health care has gained interest and a lot of people don't want MRK, PFE. These little ones are nice alternatives just to get started in the sector with good earnings. But after ABRX and ELN, it may get a little more cautious if it these lower priced ones start to rocket. I am actually looking for an up day on Mon. followed by 2 down days and hopefully filling gap even touching 9dma would be nice, and then Thur Fri running.
ABLE is too wishy washy right now, and would only be for a day to 2 days.
GEOI looks much better and looks a lot more stable after it based. I did trade both on Fri. and I kept some GEOI for this week.
I still like JMDT for longer term, but it has lost a little mo, it did get back over the 9dma though and I am sure there are a few out there trying to make a case for cwh on it.
After being in Japan 6 times in the past two years, anything new for mobile phones still has huge potential. ie. text messaging was a way of life 3 years ago already for them.
I am waiting for the hot games to go to mobile phones. No position in JMDT currently, but I am talking myself into adding if it stays above 9dma.
I am going to stick with VPHM for this week. I am also actual long and added to it this past week.
Ski, I can take care of this week if you like.

Drutzen,
Thanks for the offer but I'll get it this week an if you want next week you can take it for a couple of weeks if you can. I have a new project starting up this week an it's out of town so I'll be doing some traveling this week and probably will be getting in late a few nights, but it'll be ok for me one more week. But if you could just give one of these other guys a chance this week that would be nice.

Glad to see that your participating again this week. Got you hooked huh. Now you won't be happy until you win at least once which isn't as easy as it would seem. Just curious but what is it with the capital letters on all your words in your sentences. No problem but just curious. Peculiar. MM says we have to capitalize all our stock symbols so please do in the future. You're down with AE an open for up to 2 more picks for a total of three until the open tomorrow. Got it everyone? Total of three picks this week or less but not more.

This will be the week for my comeback. Websman will not lose! I rock!
I'm going short on KKD and DPZ
KKD - KKD has had too many up days. Face it folks. Krispy Kreme donuts taste good, but they will kill you in the long run. Do you want to have a heart attack or stroke? Huh? Well do you? STOP EATING DONUTS!!!
DPZ - Once again, too many up days and pizza also kills. All that cheese and dough. Oh man, I hate to think about the damage it does to the body... Yea I know, You guys and gals love pizza and you're not about to quit eating it. Hey, it's your life not mine. I'll stick to my salads and bean sprouts.
Yep...I'm going SHORT on both picks. I love betting on loosing stocks!

Drutzen is still in 1st place but he experienced some consolidation in his position after a week or more of gains. Spikefader's prayers were answered by some unknown bit of news circulating out there in regard to the GOOG. Dropped like a lead weight today on the rumor and propels Spike into the + column. WTG Spike.
There are a few of us out there with positions in EBAY. What was looking as a promising week in the beginning has been anything but. Still two days left an what always comes after consolidation?
Ninner, there's a thin line between up and down. Today was a prime example of that. +5.6% yesterday to -2.1 % today. Webs gave a little back today and so did BJ. RL still slightly - after two days. I'm a shade under even at -.5%. Here are the standings after today in order of portfolio % gain or loss:
1. Drutzen: + 1.59 + 5.4 %
2. BJ: + 1.00 + 4.6 %
3. Webs: - 1.38 (short/really down)+3.7%
4. Spike: - 2.83 (short) +1 %
5. Skiracer: - .5 %
6. RL: - .40 - .8 %
7. Ninner: - .61 - 2.1 %
8. IIC: - 1.59 - 4.1 %
The opportunity for exiting positions is gone at 3 pm today. Still can set stops. Anyone who has only 1 or 2 positions can enter new ones up to a total of 3 if you so desire. So you have until the open tomorrow to enter any new ones if you now have less than 3 in your portfolio. Good luck.

Don't forget, it is options expiration week.
If anyone wants to really gamble, options can be picked this week. If it is ok with everyone.
I would just put down a couple of guidelines.
If you pick an option, they do not open until 15 mins. after stocks, at that time I will take the ask price for the buy.
On Fri., I will take the bid price for sell, so the spread may eat up a little of your gains.
There are no partial options so if you may have some cash left over.
If you pick a stock and an option, 50 50, and there is left over cash from option, I will dump it into the stock.
Anyone game?? or would you rather keep it stocks?

I'll change my pick to:
sell to open GOOG 320 Jun calls
which should guarantee me a 100% profit provided that that GOOG doesn't close above 320 on Friday. (that is unless you're not allowing a sell to open option trade, in which case, nevermind)

I am still liking VPHM and i am still long. Holding 9dma well, good earnings and good mo. The one part that may be a tiny bit iffy was the big down volume 3 days ago, hopefully that was just profit taking and letting it be ready for another run. I still think 10 is in the cards for it, but they are converting notes into stock, hopefully that is done also. I also added to position last week on dip.
ERS looks better, completing a triangle and should be able to get close to 10 also, BJ's pick last week, so I will leave it for him if he wants it again.
DSTI should be the mo of the week, it may want to work on a htf, if it does I would think right around 12.5 to 13 is the area.
PWEI, i am still long, inched below 9dma but held 10dma, good earnings, and working on a small cwh, but the low volume makes it a hard pick for the contest.
I am trying to get a cwh out of SNDA and JMDT, which I still think are nice for a little longer term, but my guess is that they both will try to test the 50dma first before getting back a bit of the mo
My best guess for the winner of the week would be from an option, GOOG 280 call or put?, EBAY 37.50 call or put? which way will they go? Or, earnings next week of those that are near strike prices, GS BSC KBH ADBE BBY CC?
I will stick with VPHM long, and maybe add option for a 50 50

By the way, I am just posting this stuff so we can look back at it next Friday and make some editorial comments. Stuff like, "Newborn, you don't know nothing!!" :D I don't wish anyone to do badly; and everyone to do very well with the pile of dead presidents.
Best to you, Ski, with the real cash investments.

I know it's all in good fun but alot of these picks turn into real money makers. I always check them all out with a quick look at the chart. NGPS didn't say a thing to me and look at what it did. I hate to miss a move like that.
I first mentioned HTRN when it was in the low to mid 11 range. I bought it on 3 occasions. 11.71, 11.75, and 12.75. The first two trades ended close to a point gain and the last trade I closed at 14.10 and re-entered the same afternoon at 13.12 an is still open.
I mentioned that it was not my typical trade and that I felt it was one of those occassions where you would have to hold it for awhile. I feel secure that it is going to the 16/17 range in the intermediate term. Only time will tell. As of right now it has been very good to me.
I also think that there is still some gas left in NGPS and that it is still an opportunity.

I think you might be on to a good one with this one Doug. Looks to be setting up. Sorry New-Born but have to disagree with you on this one. Liked the ENTU pick though and will be watching both of these tomorrow morning.
Ski,
Disagree anytime. I am trying to learn. Thanks for posting the SKS chart. We will look back Friday on our charts and hopefully learn something.

RL and Co.,
Here's what the chart says to me about your dart throws. First up: ECA

Looks like a good one to lay money on in real life; timing might not
be right to win the contest. We shall see . . . .

I don't know. I have no FA on this company, and chart is one that I could either buy or sell depending on how it breaks out of the rectangle.

This one I think may even trade to the downside this week. We shall see next Friday, but the rangebound signal is going to collide with the up-channel by Tuesday, and something has to give. I am guessing that it is going to give to the downside, but I could be wrong.
