I'm getting ready to post todays results of the POTW but there are 3 position moves that I need help with pertaining to the time of sales prices. They are: I could use these asap if anyone has them available. My brokerage's time and sales doesn't give me the data after the close anymore. Used to be able to go back a couple of days after the close each day but now only during market open hours. This will be a big help please.
Alice4321us: 10:14 sell MTEX.
MIMO_100: 10:31 sell FTEK.
RL: 3:10 enter AXTI.

Ski,
Just real quick: I'm actually positive on my short position, but you have my short as a long. Same with DMK. He's is short, but in a losing position right now, and you have him recorded for a gain. Also, I thought the positions were percentage gain/loss. If it is dollar gain or loss, then I am calling BRK.A as my stock for the rest of the year. It moves in thousand dollar increments...
and whizzy has a .14 loss, not .05
ps. percentage gain/loss is better.... :D The formula is: ((end-beg)/beg)x100 = percent change

Peanuts,
Whiz's entry was supposed to be 2.01 and not 2.10. That's why I have it .05. Initially when I first looked at the list that Rob posted I missed the two shorts. I changed them to short positions, in red, today but forgot to reverse the numbers as they should be for shorts. Down is + and up is -. I'll fix it right now. With that formula can I plug in the formula and highlight the whole sheet and get the gain/loss percentage for all of the positions at once?
Once I plug the formula into the fx bar what do I do after that please. I would like to show them in percentages if you can lead me through it.

Well I have been messing around with it and I think that I am getting it a little better and more concise. I would like to know how to flood the background with color or the individual rows or columns with color. Any other suggestions to make it more eye appealing are welcome.
Pete Hansen. I am not dissing you Pete. I don't get anything for BRCL on Stockcharts.com. Sorry but if you would help me out here please Pete and tell me what you want to do. Anyone else get anything on BRCL?
I think I have everyone's positions down right now. I'm putting the long positions in BLUE and the short positions in RED.
Stky is still on the top of the leader board with his NVEC play. This could be it for the week. Not to much change within the remaining players today. Still 5 undecided's in the PRETTY IN PINK ZONE.
Remember any suggestions are welcome as far as making this esthetically pleasing. Here are today's results and standings:
Karel, I think this should be acceptable size wise yes. Before you thumbnail it please give me a chance to make it alittle smaller if it needs it. I like the larger format since it is easier on the eyes as long as it fits your parameters.

Ski, it looks like you're using Excel. To color the background of a cell you can click on the cell and then click on the 'paint bucket' button on the toolbar.

Ski, you are doing just fine. This one is 614px wide. (Rob's were 687, so you have some more room.) I don't think a sheet with a font this big really needs alternating row backgrounds, but here is an Excel tip anyway:
http://www.techonthenet.com/excel/questions/cond_format2.php
They leave a step out however, as you loose the border color this way. Just don't click OK after you have set the background color, but go to the border tab, select the lightest gray as color (or another color when you choose that as your background), and click on Outline. Now you click on OK.

Karel

Thanks Karel and DMK. I wasn't thinking of anything multi-color but maybe a solid color wash for the background with a border around that to emphasize the sheet. Just thoughts and I'll try it later tonight. There is only so much that you can do. What I would like more help with is the suggestion that Peanuts made about the gain/loss being in % rather than numerically. I would like to know how to plug that in and if I have to do it with each players results or can I do the whole sheet at once. Thanks.

Ski, that is easy. Currently you use a formula like =[close] - [entry] for the results. What you need is either:
=([close] - [entry]) / [entry] (and format as a percentage)
or:
=([close] - [entry]) * 100 / [entry] (no need for formatting, but no percentage sign)
This is the formula for long positions. For shorts you put a - just after the =

While moving the cursor around the worksheet, you might notice that when the cursor goes to the bottom right corner of any cell, the cursor changes to a black + sign. When that happens, you can click on the black + sign and drag a formula in the cardinal directions. In this case, you would type in the formula and then click the black + and drag the formula down to the end of the contestant list. If you'd like, you can email the spreadsheet and I can check it for you. I've got alot of experience with excel, and I like using it. I've set up a generic email address for occasions just like this. Just email the spreadsheet to me and I will check out the formulas. email.peanuts@yahoo.com I hardly ever use this email address

Sorry Doug. When you are taking care of this it is easy to see how easy to miss something or miscalculate something. I'm pretty meticulous with those things and it makes you appreciate the job Rob did with it for as long as he did. Anyway I'll take care of the entry. Peanuts, I appreciate your offer but I'm going to try to play around with it myself first to see if I can do it myself. Thanks.

Alice takes over the top spot from Stkytreat with her position in MTEK. Followed by Karel and Riverbabe. Stky gave back a considerable portion of yesterday's gains. Peanuts is a close 4th with his second pick of the week. I'm doing the second picks a little different that we are used to but that last column is the total gains or losses between the two positions.

Thank you Doug for being so considerate. If he put in the wrong sticker symbol at his broker wouldn't they tell him that they didn't have a stock for that symbol and then he would have entered the right symbol after he realized his mistake. For the moment I am just trying to create good will amongst all of us. Some will benefit more from it than others but after all, " what are we barbarians" that we can't be forgiving to each other. I don't want to be considered the rule maker Doug. I just happen to be steering the boat for awhile. Pete won't do this again will you Pete.

I don't think I can remember where to find intraday open prices by the minute for previous days. But it seems to me that I clicked submit when LVLT was at 5.39. But, it might have opened that minute at 5.40 on the first trade....So if nobody can verify it...Just give me 5.40 instead of 5.29...No problemo.
However, for stocks that you need the open for a particular day...like BRLC...you can go to Nasdaq.com, Yahoo or Stockcharts "Historical" (That's where I got BRLC...You might have to be a subscriber to SC to get that unless you change chart dates...But I think you are a subscriber anyway)...The Amex site has it too...Not sure about the NYSE though... http://Amex.com http://NYSE.com http://Nasdaq.com

Ski, if you get tired of this let me know and I'll try to help. I have one of Rob's earlier POTW programs that automatically goes to the internet and grabs the prices. I can't give it to you (without his permission) but I might be able to help.... I'd really hate to see people lose interest in the POTW because it is my favorite feature of the forum and I put so much energy into building it up last year.
You know, Rob might not like profanity but he really is a genius IMO.

Lye,
Rob has been in contact with me and he set me up with his spreadsheet over at Google docs. I opened up a Google acct. this morning and now have access to Rob's document at Google. I have a few questions on how to use it but I intend on picking his mind and using it for the POTW since it is set up and running with all the features that we need.
The biggest problem is that Quotetracker, a trading platform that I have set up for realtime streaming quotes and raw data & time of sales has stopped giving the entire day of time of sales once the market closes. I think this is so unless I switched something off inadvertently.
I'll work it out with a little help from my friends. No problemo at all.

I see that $3000 a week post brought out the best in you guys.
Some big changes in the leader board today. Perhaps the biggest was my error in computing Peanuts percentages on his short position in THC. I just hear the letters THC and I go bonkers. Karel and Grebnet are in the 2nd and 3rd slots with Alice right on Greb's heels in the 4th position. 12 positions in the GREEN and 8 in the RED. That's a decent 66 % to the plus side. You have to be happy with those results for a group rating. Here are todays results. Any errors or ommissions please let me know and I take care of them pronto.

Ski,
I know you hate me, but at least you can put up the right score ;) ... My SIM play was a gain of $.77 per share for 4.22%. The THC trade is correct.
Combined gain of 10.8% for the week, and now I'm in cash.
Have a good night. Now that I don't hold THC, you can enjoy it all you want...

Ski,
Thanks for keeping score. I know it is a lot of work, and I want to tell you that I (and I know everyone else, too) appreciates it all.
Now my question: I shorted TWGP at $33.66, and covered today at $30.05, for a gain of $3.61. $3.61 divided by $33.66 comes to 10.72%. Is that good enough for first place?

Boy you guys certainly take a guy for his word. What's the big problem with being a couple of dollars or a few percentage points off? Ok I fixed it this time but don't be pushing me to far with this being correct all of the time stuff. I never promised anyone a rosegarden or a politically or numerically correct POTW. Here's the corrected sheet. I guess I'm actually going to have to learn how to use the formulas. Well I hope you're all happy now. Ray, I'll put you in the right ranking order tomorrow morning or sometime. Just realized the 0 is higher than minus something. You should be in there right after Stkytreat. Isn't this more fun this way. At least I'm keeping everyone on their toes making sure their scores and rankings are correct. I told you I would need some help.
Ray is now in his correct slot with his correct entry and scores. I think everything is in order now. Let me know if there are anymore errors that need correcting as I am here to serve and take care of all your wishes.

Ski, is there any reason you don't use the spreadsheet Rob used?
No. Rob set me up with the spreadsheet at Google documents and I set up an account with them just so that I could use his sheet. I've been extremely busy with these two projects I have underway and I just haven't had the time to take a look at his sheet. I'm not sure how to use it anyway. I emailed Rob asking for instructions on how to use it and haven't heard back from him yet. I did want to try to learn and comprehend how to set up something similar to what he had done for myself in Excel. Karel has also been trying to help me with learning to set up and use the formulas but it really has been a matter of time on my part. I thought that over the weekend I would have some free time to spend on looking at Rob's and trying to get something viable set up to work for the one I have been using over he last couple of days.

I would be more than supportive of Rob returning to take over the POTW. I only took it because no one else stepped up and I didn't want to see it go down the drain. It takes up time which I could use elsewhere but I've only had it for a couple of days and I don't think the inconviences have been that hard to live with. It will only be a short period of time before I will have a working knowledge of how to use the formulas and whatever else is necessary to do it with Rob's or my own sheet without repeating these recent problems. I really haven't had the time to give it much thought other than keeping it going. Anyone who wants to take it off my hands right now may do so with my blessing and support.

I don't want it to go down the drain either.... I know you have the ability to keep the score Ed, but I think you might "burn out" doing it manually.
I have kept score many times and in the early days there was only five or six players and manually it would take me alot of time nightly to figure the scorecard.... I eventually started using a simi-automated system using my Vector-Vest portfolio tracker and that was faster but still took me an hour per night once there were fifteen players. Rob has created a completely automated program that takes the data from the internet.... and his program makes very few mistakes.
I could post the score in about an hour per night, sometimes less.... Rob's system takes literally minutes (I have an older copy but I can't remember everything about operating it). He has made several revisions to his current program and I seriously doubt he'd give the automated version out to anyone because he's spent so much time on it. That spreadsheet he's given you will indeed work.... but it's still very time consuming. I'm gonna call him at home and see what's on his mind.

I have worked it out. I though all afternoon after Lye's post commending my efforts about how am I going to do this and then I saw that Rob had emailed me and I am now going to use his sheet. Everything is going to be ok in POTWland. Rob has surely developed a spreadsheet that basically takes care of itself for the week. Truly amazing.
Anyway back to what we're here for. Pete and his pick BRLC came out of nowhere to snatch victory from the grasp of Peanuts and NBB who were locked in a .01 % battle for 2nd and 3rd places this week. The WhizKid and Karel filling out the top five.

Yea, it wasn't my fault. I had to do the POTW spreadsheet all week and couldn't spend anytime watching my POTW picks. I should get a 12 % one time allocation for administrative duties. The sheet was brought to you by Spreadsheets by Rob. Anything you need in an operational spreadsheet. I won't be coming in last when, as the scorekeeper and rule monger, I award myself the administrative allowance.

Guys, I hardly ever ask for anything from anyone that I am not ready to do myself. When it comes to the use of profantity I've got one of the filthiest mouths going. I'm not so proud to announce that here in front of everyone but it's the truth. As far as fighting and killing I'm probably way out in front of everyone here except maybe Runner. I'm also not proud of that but it is the truth. But I am going to ask you to consider this request from me regarding my thread. I hate to see this arguement happening between members in the first place but please not on my thread. Tatnic I expressed to you earlier that I valued whatever you have to say anytime on this tread and I still mean it but please take this somewhere else. I don't think this is the place for it an I don't want to be part of it and have it taking up space here. Perhaps we should start a thread where if two members want to argue they can do it there and if anyone else wants to read that stuff or particapate they can without involving everyone else.
I love to express myself with the F & MF words every chance I get on the construction sites because it gets everyones attention but I don't need to do that here and don't want anyone else using profanity or carrying their arguements over onto this thread.
It's a simple request amongst friends and I would expect everyone to comply with it. Just for the record it is hard for me to not use the profanity to express my feeling about specific points that I am trying to convey but I want to go on record as agreeing with Rob on this profanity thing. I don't think it is necessary or vital to any of us to need to use it but if you must then I would have to ask you nicely once and warn you once and then it's the ignore button. So please take this request about the arguing and profanity into consideration for me. Thanks. Ed

Actually Tatnic I didn't realize that I was on the POTW thread and was speaking like it was mine which is way off base. I meant what I posted earlier for my own personal thread and not this one. I don't speak for everyone participating in this thread and by no means control it just because I'm using Rob's program and spreadsheet to keep the score without doing a thing except to capture it and upload it over here. Maybe make a few changes for entries and exits and prices etc. and for a full three days. Anyway I think it is big of you to take the high road on this. Thanks.

Any man who will spend time looking for his girlfriend's cat is OK by me. I heard somewhere that men will tell women they love cats but when the women aren't looking, men kick cats. I love cats and will have nothing to do with any man who is cruel to animals, especially cats.

I love cats. We just lost two treasures within the last two years. My wife still can't look at a cat without getting tears in her eyes. We had a Maine Coon named Nissa and a Mynx called Critter. The Maine Coon had six toes. The sixth toe was like a thumb. I think they also call the Hemingway's because at his joint in Key West he had a bunch of them running around with six toes. I saw that with my own eyes in the early 1950's when we lived in Key West.

This is one of my favorite pictures of her. She liked to lie in this one spot where the sun came in through the window and if you felt her head right there it was almost hot from the warmth of the sun. She was a beauty and had about 5 colors in her coat. She was 15 when she passed on. She died while I was holding her in my arms at the vets. I never loved another animal the way I did this cat. My wife still can't talk about her after two years. She was really my wife's cat and would follow her around wherever she went in or out of the house. You would think she was sleeping but she was watching everything out of those slits.

Put me in VIAC this week, long please. Thanks!
Mary
lol.. the last time a bunch of good 'ol boys (drunks) tried to attack me (there were 4 of them) I laid two of them out and then started wrecking their car with rocks. One tried to pull a hammer on me so I figured I was justified. This happened in front of funeral home in Radford VA while I was walking around the neighborhood looking for my girlfriend's cat. Maybe one of them was you...if it was, I apologize for that beatin';), but you guys started it!
Hey Tat!!!...Did you ever find the cat???

First of all, I would like to reach out and smack HUGE Peter Hanson for stealing the gold this week! Normally, I would be very happy for such a fine performance, but when the glory is stolen from me, I want to see blood. :D Just kidding, Pete, that was a great find and a great long, so I guess that makes you absolutely 100% $$$HUUUUUGE$$$ Way to go!
NBB, well, dude, it looks like me and you are only BIG this week. I was going to declare a tie if we had ended in the top spots, but that Pete guy whipped us like we were Wisconsin sweet butter. Nice short play!
Skiracer, for the following week, I would like to start with a long position in XTXI. Thank you very much, and keep up the great work!

DMK is HUGEagain but ROB is EVEN HUGER, squeaking past DMK with a 0.01% better special-K factor. Of course, having DMK's 35% gainer fall off this time was what brought him back down to the sub-supernatural plane. And a hearty congrats goes out to our 3rd place winner, STKY, who managed to average a 2% weekly gain over 13 weeks of play. Not bad for a kid still in high school, eh?
Congrats also to Diogenes, Park Twain, and Gatorman for respectable gains in a rough quarter.
So, it looks like Rob is going out with style, and taking the gold with him. (Please do come back, Rob, when you've cooled off a bit... you were the best scorekeeper ever, and I don't think I can manage to do this again without your nicely organized POTW data.) Ski, your efforts are very much appreciated, and I know it's not easy to keep this going- especially to the standard that Rob's set- but keep it up! You'll find it much easier once you've had a few weeks under your belt.

By the way my daughter Is coming along well her ankle and one wrist Is healed well, It's a long way back but she will heal. count your blessings, the room that I was In was a man 51 years old that contacted a virus In the brain they have no cure.
Ray,
I'm glad to hear that your daughter is doing well, and you're back home from the hospital. Being stuck in a hospital is no fun- especially since there's no POTW in the hospital! Makes me want to go out and enjoy the health I've got... in fact, I'm going to do just that right now.

I'm going to be eliminating a few of the names from the list so that I can get a capture to fit on one page. Otherwise I have to do it in two captures and then there is the problem of lining the two captures up etc... Quasi-Ernie is going, NY4ever is going, and a few others that will go as I need the spaces. I hope no one was counting on seeing their picks or that they would be entering the game this week. I can always plug them back in if it comes down to it.

I don't remember him telling us that he had cancer. Anyone would feel bad for someone suffering from cancer but regardless he was a terrible personality. I can't say that I'm sorry that he is gone, not literally of course but figuratively from the POTW.

Very sorry to hear about the passing of your father. Last Friday, I was informed by my doctor that my cancer, which I thought was cured for 8 years, had returned. Both myself and my wife have been treated for this beast. it isn't a picnic as you well know. Very few people are lucky enough to die from a massive heart attack according to my doctor. Take care. Time is the great healer.

Ski,
I made this suggestion quite a while ago, but no one liked it.
I will make the same suggestion again.
Create a POTW Opening and closing transactions thread that everyone posts to. This thread is only transactions, no chit chat, etc. That way the scorekeeper does not have to go through a bunch of posts to find out
what everyone is doing.:)

that guy had a different story every few months. He was saying that he was a cancer survivor but to be honest, I could never believe anything he said. If he is over 70, then chances are he could have prostate cancer, its very common for guys that age. Doesn't necessarily mean a death sentence, well I guess life is a death sentence after a certain age.
I had an epiphany the other day as to why old people drive so slowly...its because they know that time is so precious that they're enjoying the scenery and every damn second of the day. Young people drive too damn fast because they just want to get from point a to b in the fastest time possible, without enjoying the trip. Life is a trip, enjoy the ride and that means taking it slow and easy and soak in things before they slip by. I'm hardly old, but I only drive fast when I'm on the road for many hours at a time.

It's like sex. Really meant to be taken slowly and savored. Life is the same way. I turned 62 today. It makes you realize your mortality. After all these years I am finally coming to the realization and understanding about what is really important and what is a waste of time. It should savored and treasured. It is fleeting and could be over before you know it. My wife just made me my favorite dinner, prime rib roast beef with mushroom gravy and cauliflower with a cheese sauce over it. Mushrooms stuffed with suasage, garlic, and onions as an appetizer. I opened my last bottle of Caymus 1985 Cabernet Sauvignon which is a treasure and cannot be found anymore anywhere. My wife drinks very little so I had to drink the whole bottle almost by myself. The wine was as good as it gets to the tastebud. I feel like a million bucks physically and for 62 look pretty good. But the best part of it is that we have been married for 30 years and are still deeply in love. She is the best think that has ever happened to me and our life is so good. I am blessed. I'm just pouring myself a couple of fingers of Granmarnier and we're sitting on the couch and are going to watch a movie on one of the movie channels. I won't be writing up the POTW results tonight but I'll have everything done and posted for the morning. Peanuts, if I were a betting man, an I am, I would have bet that it would be you to get those prices for me. Thanks alot. It will be a big help in the morning getting the results together and posted. Granmarnier and a big fatty, not my wife, and her on the couch together along with great health. Plus got Rob's spreadsheet straightened out. Life is great. Have the results together and posted in the morning.

Spike, jeez just when you start to feel good about yourself another error. You're absolutely right and I will take care of the correction tonight. I thought it was a cute write-up and then no cigar. That took place in the copy and paste phase of moving your row and a bottle of Cab and some Granmarnier. I typed that 0.00 in myself and didn't realize I made the error. The rest of the scores got take care of through Rob's program. It's a wonder that I didn't make more as it was pretty late and I was under the influence.

WooHoo!! Look at me go! :p
However, I do know that the stock market tends to be fickle at times. Since the company I picked works with stem cell research, I think the results of today's elections will have an effect on the price of VIAC stock. We'll see. If I wanted to sell this stock during the game, would I be allowed to say at some point to sell it and buy [whatever my next pick is]?

Mary,
All you have to do is to post that you want to exit or sell VIAC and enter something else of your choice either long or short. You get the price at the time of your post for the sell order and the buy order. You get two round trips. Your first entry and sell and the second entry and sell. Or you could exit VIAC and stay in cash for the rest of the week or until you find something you like.
Happy birthday Ski hope you have many more. I'll try AXTI-LONG please. Now don't tell me Mary Is really Rob:confused:
No. I am not Rob. I really am Rob's younger sister. If I have to, I'll find a picture of the two of us and post it here.

It's a wonder that I didn't make more as it was pretty late and I was under the influence.SssSss....no problemo.....and I'm sorry that was yer last bottle of that particular year and grape. You definately write well under the influence of it :D

SssSss....no problemo.....and I'm sorry that was yer last bottle of that particular year and grape. You definately write well under the influence of it :D
That year Caymus Special Selection was bought for around 15/20 a bottle in 1989 - 1992 range of years. I had several cases of it and it was good back then. That last bottle was at least 20 years old and was very very good. But that's the end of the Caymus. I have some Heitz's "Martha's Vineyard" from 1985 and 1986 that is a classic California Cabernet that was probably 40/50 a bottle when the Caymus 1985 Caymus was 15/20 in 1989 or so. I bet you couldn't touch the 85 or 86 Caymus Special Selection, if you could find it available, for under 400 a bottle right now. I sold one to a friend about 2 years ago for 250. The Heitz's are very rare ones, especially those years and were very highly rated and would easily fetch over 400/500 a bottle for those years if you could find them. Each of those two vineyards had wines of the year internationally those years and had respective 100 point rankings for their top Cabernets, which is rare.
I picked those bottles up when the craze wasn't as driven by the yuppie generation and the subsequent escalation of prices they brought on with the substantial increase in demand.
The supplies are limited and what was once a somewhat kind of expensive hobby has now become almost priced out of doing anymore because the demand is so high for the best vineyards bottlings that they don't even sell to distributors for liquor stores anymore. They have people who take it all before it gets bottled and then they do what they want to do with it.

MARY, Mary, Mary quite to the contrary is showing the members just how to do it. Still atop the
leaderboard entrenched in Green and talking about changing horses in midstream. What's up this girl's sleeve for the rest of the week? SKIRACER blows past most of the field in coming from near last to vie for the lead just 1.99 off the leader and top spot. Gatorman steps on the gas and steams into 3rd place with Alice4321US right on his heels.
14 positions in the green and 7 in the red. 1 pretty in Pink. Will Mary succumb to the pressure that midweek plays on rookies finding themselves on top of the leaderboard? SKIRACER and GATORMAN are battle and time tested veterans that are used to the stress and pressure of MAJOR LEAGUE POTW. Let's see what Wednesday brings? And here's today's sheet and results: BTW I put Doug's play from 9.53 am this morning in at 21.92 on his sayso of what the stock was trading at that time. Nice day today with that pick Doug.

I did say that it seemed like a good entry as long as his trade is more than a few weeks. Time is the biggest factor at this point...if the market can't make new highs soon, it will most likely take a break for a few weeks and retrace.

Well, I don't know about Rob, but I just Googled something like "stock research" and looked at a couple of sites that showed up on the first page of Google results. I found a site that had two charts, one was "notable upgrades" and the other "notable downgrades." One of the upgrades when I first found this site was VIAC upgraded from "hold" to "buy." I read about what the company does and figured the election results might have an effect. The Rush Limbaugh v. Michael J. Fox flap about whether or not Fox was exaggerating his symptoms put the stem cell research argument on front page news again. So I gambled I was either going to win big or lose big with that pick. Looks like I'm winning big ... so far. But the week's not over yet.

However you got to the pick is water over the dam right now Mary. It turned out very nice for you so far. It's a great feeling to win this thing even if you don't own the stock itself. By the way,Tatnic: I usually put a smiley face on the post to try to indicate to our readers that I mean it in a friendly way. The trouble with writing is that people can't see our facial expressions and body language, and that is perhaps 80% of the way we communicate. We always have to be extra careful. I know that sometimes in the past I have written some posts that were not received as I intended. :)

Obviously you did a great job finding that company based on what I thought was some pretty decent reasoning. So, if your brother can find it in himself to come back to posting I'm sure he'd make a lot of people happy as I'm sure he is truely missed here. If he's waiting for me to leave then with any luck I'll have to anyway since I'm hoping to be too busy in the not-to-distant future with other conflicting endeavors. Plus I'm headed up north for a week at deer camp so I'll definately be out for about 10 days starting this Saturday.

As you mentioned in the post you wrote just after this one, the reason I immediately jumped to the conclusion that you were being facetious is because of your prior post. As for my "decent reasoning," that type of reasoning is all I have to go on until I learn how to read these charts that you and the other members of this group rely on.
It is an unfortunate truth in our society that lots of decisions are based on emotion. The reason this is unfortunate -- and I think we all know this -- is that emotions are fickle and very changeable. So, if emotional reaction to current events is what affects the market, then anticipated emotional reaction to current events should be looked at along with the company's financial stability, etc. Also, it is important to remember that not everyone who plays the market (which also affects stock pricing) is a financial genius and how those people play the market will also have an effect.
I'm preaching to the choir now, huh? OK. I'll stop.

Tatnic,
You're a great man to apologize. Thank you for being a real man about it. I hope you stick around. Pretty please.
I didn't read the posts that were offensive, so I can't comment with any real knowledge. But I would say that MM forums have been fairly clean, up to now, and I hope they will get completely pure. Also almost all of the posts have been from people who have tried to be helpful, and rooted for the success of fellow forumites. I hope this continues and improves, too. We sure do not help anyone by being negative simply for the reason of being negative. We need the objective eye, and a sincere desire to be helpful.
I hope Rob and Lye come back ASAP. Mary, if you could ask brother Rob to come back, we would appreciate it very much. Rob is a very good trader to have around. I always appreciated his FA. He's a sharp guy. And pass the word to Lye that we need him here, as I am about to short steel. :D
God bless us all :D And Tatnic, get a big buck for us Mr. Market types. Around here, nothing less than HUGE will do :D

Thanks NBB...most of the bucks in northern Maine are big, but they're few and far between. In the year 2000, we took 6 and 3 dressed over 200 lbs. Since then we've haven't even taken 6 more. Feast or famine.

Tatnic,
Come to Wisconsin; they're as thick as cheeseheads. It's easy to get deer here. I took out a 12 point with my Buick; a man in my church hit a huge deer with his pickup and did $5k damage to it. And last year we had a woman from my church killed by a deer when she swerved and went into the ditch. People also shoot them here, too. You'd do us a service by cutting down on the herd.

ACOR, 9:39 am, $15.26
SNTS, 9:39 am, $8.13
ENER, 10:09 am, $38.26
Um, ski & peanuts, I haven't had a quibble so far, but I don't think the ask for ENER was anywhere near 38.26 at 10:09 yesterday. Granted I can only pull up a 10 min. chart at this point, but the open and high at 10:00 was 38.21 with a close at 37.80 and at 10:10 the open was 37.81. Now, also granted that the ask price could have been 38.26 at 10:00, this thing was dropping like a rock by 10:09 and I'm sure I caught it on its way down at 37 something at 10:09. Granted the ask might have been something like 37.86 or so, but I don't think it was anywhere near 38.26.
Would appreciate a cross check, 'cause I really need to get into the GREEN here! ;) Thanks. river

Come to NJ. They are not as big as what you guys are talking about but they are plentiful and you could get a nice rack up to around 10/12. In the mid to southern section where I live they are smaller but plentiful. There is a large park near my home that we walk in almost every day usually right after I get home before dinner. A guy whose backyard borders on the park is putting corn out and I've seen a few 10 and 12 pointers in there. There is a herd of about 24 eating there every night with about 3/4 big bucks in the herd.

So Ski, please excuse my mistake and give Riverbabe the proper price if you see fit. Or you can deduct the difference off of my trade for punishment for not being as good as Rob... If it makes a difference I double-checked the prices tonight

ALL THE CONTEST RESULTS WORTH READING
MARY STUNS!!! EXPERIENCED TRADERS!!!
In what has to be the most shocking results of the year ROBS little sister pulls away from the field in stunning fashion to hold on to her lead and take her first win after only her 2nd full week of play. There have been reports of several experienced traders going into their garages and taking the pipe. ICEMAN surges back into 2nd place with SKIRACER holding onto 3rd place. RIVERBABE slips into 4th on the merit of a scorekeeping correction and the strength of her 2nd pick this week. 15 green and 5 red with 1 pretty in pink still in CASH. A decent week with gainers outpacing the losers by a 2/1 margin

Unless you actually have the raw data and time of sales screen available to you then your not getting the right price. I don't know what it is that you are posting from but that is not look like a time of sales screen to me. There could be hundreds of different trades at different prices within a one minute time frame.
In what has to be the most shocking results of the year ROB'S little sister pulls away from the field in stunning fashion to hold on to her lead and take her first win after only her 2nd full week of play.
Yeah, but now the pressure is on to try to follow that act. The VIAC pick was a gift that just fell in my lap. I've been using the same market research site ever since I made the VIAC pick and, although I've seen other upgrades from "hold" to "buy" and read about those companies, I have not yet seen anything that reaches out and grabs my attention the way VIAC did. I almost wrote a post today when VIAC was up by only $0.03 to sell VIAC but I didn't do it. I was fretting about someone in this group (can't remember if it was Peanuts or Ski) who threatened that he had a secret pick that was going to challenge my first place position.
P.S. By not breaking under pressure and selling when VIAC was up $0.03, I gained an additional $0.09 since, according to a quick Google search, VIAC gained $0.12 today. :)

geez Ski, doesn't he worry about Lyme Disease? A deer tick is in many cases so small they're mistaken for freckles, and usually its the small ones that carry the bacteria. And don't you guys have bears in abundance now? Putting out corn for deer is a bad idea if there are bears in the vicinity, the next thing you know he'll come home to a bear in his bath tub. Remember that poor family in NJ that had their baby stolen from a crib by a black bear? I sure hope that no one was putting out food for deer and attracked that bear by accident. That's the problem with feeding wildlife, there are unintended consequences.

We don't have many bears in this portion of the state although about 4/5 months ago a small black bear came out of the park that I am talking about and walked down the middle of our street. I was at work at the time and my wife called me to tell me that there was a bear walking down ours street. Not sure where it came from or how it got here but must have worked it's way down from up north somewhere. I personally have never seen one in this area.
I know that feeding them will attract more of them but the park I am talking about basically surrounds our whole neighborhood and is loaded with deer. Directly across the street from the park is the old Ciba-Geigy manufacturing plant site and it is probably as large as or larger that the park and is also loaded with deer. It's like they have a private reserve with no real predators. Like I said earlier I have a doe that has taken to living in our backyard.

Doug,
I don't have them available to me after the close. I do have them available to me during the open hours but I'm not always available to read the posts and correlate them with the time of sales during the open hours so I have to rely on Peanuts or Runner or anyone who is gracious enough to take the time to do this for us and the POTW in general. I am taking Peanuts or Runners or anyone else who has the available time of sales prices and will post them when I ask for them as the price I am going to use. I think that we are all going to have to deal with those prices. Peanuts and Runner's prices matched for EDU at the time of 11:17:07 am. That is close enough for me an I hope that you can agree with them and let them be good enough for you since they both matched. This is the best that I can do under the circumstances.
I'm sure there will be times where mistakes will be made but as with Riverbabe's entry in ENER which Peanuts erred on initially he was gracious and accomodating enough to go back and check it out and make the correction. We can't expect anymore from someone who is trying their best to help and to keep this thing afloat. Anytime there is a disputed price or anything else in question, all I ask is that each of us exhibit enough patience to let me find the error and make the corrections as necessary. That is the best I can do.

I am trying to keep the commentary light and interesting but it flows out of me better on some days than others depending on what time of the evening that I compile the sheet and write it. I'm excited to hear that you are digging it. That makes it worthwhile. Now I would like to win it once in a while. Here are some of the new picks for this coming week, not in any particular order alphabetical or sort. And congratulations to MARY and DOUG on great plays last week. Riverbabe, you had a great play with WYNN and after you exited the play it went off the scale. You probably would have been real close to the #1 spot. But none of that matters now. Lets see what the new week brings. Welcome JBLAZE71 to the game and his 1st week of participation in it. There have been a number of past players who have gone missing in action. Please report in just to let us know that everything is ok and perhaps to get back into the POTW action.
Well we have two of those three ladies participating. This is a direct invitation to MS. LOUETTA to grace us with her participation in the POTW this coming week and any week that she wants to play.

Ski, isn't CAMH an over-the-counter stock?
Additionally, I'm surprised that no one, not even New-born Baby, brought up the fact that there was also an error in New-born's score last week, i.e. that his score only reflected his second round-trip of the week and omitted his first one, which was opened here (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showthread.php?p=70749), closed two posts later, and for which Peanuts provided the correct opening and closing prices here (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showthread.php?p=70802).

CAMH might be an over-the-counter stock. To be honest I didn't check. I'm not that up to date or well versed in all of the rules that have become part of the POTW. I'm terribly sorry about any scorekeeping errors that have cropped up while I have been running the POTW. I stepped up to take on the task of running the contest because no one else did and I didn't want to see it go by the wayside. It was left in somewhat of a lurch and without any forewarning so I stepped up. But it does take away alot of valuable time on my part that I should be spending on my businesses and with my family which come first. Rob your spreadsheet is awesome and anyone that is somewhat computer literate would have no problem using it and taking care of the scorekeeping. Hopefully without the errors and to put the time in to make sure everything is above board with the picks. You were very good with it and perhaps you should take it back over. Anyway hopefully someone will step up to take on the job this week. Peanuts and Runner were great in providing my with the realtime time of sales intraday prices for all the entries and exits that took place during the week. Thanks guys, you know I appreciate it.
If I want to play this week but don't have a pick yet, is that when I tell the scorekeeper that I want to be in CA$H? And when/if I find a pick, then I post it and go from there?

You can do that now if you want. You have until just before the close on Monday to enter ca$h or your first pick though...Doug
First of all let me say that I enjoy the way this contest is set up...allowing 2 pix etc...However, I think the scorekeeping duties are pretty cumbersome and time consuming. I believe even Rob had asked in the past if someone would take them over.
Therefore, I suggest we change the format to one pick...Has to be in on Sunday evening by a certain time...You get the open on Monday and the close on Friday...that's it.
Any thoughts?

Play smart. Play safe. Have fun. Love your scorekeeper. Send him your finest meats and cheeses.
I was just reading a few weeks back in time in this thread and this old post that Rob wrote during his last week as scorekeeper. This has me wondering about a common phrase I've seen in this forum. The introduction you always see at the top of the page from Mr. Market includes this sentence: "Bring me your finest meats and cheeses." Lye's signature on his posts says "Eat more beef and GOJI's." Then Rob said what's quoted above. Although I think the reason for Lye's signature has something to do with his occupation, it fits in with the other posts where I've seen reference to "finest meats and cheeses." Is this an inside joke that only the veteran forum members understand?

Meaning that if someone makes a pick and sees he/she is losing their socks at the close on Tuesday or Wednesday, they can't change horses in the middle of the stream to sell the first pick and buy another?
Wouldn't this also put an end to starting off the week in CA$H because we wouldn't be permitted to go long or short on a stock mid-week?

I think Mr. Market came up with that motto when he was 5 years old.

Exactly...I don't particularly like a rules change here...But scorekeeping is a thankless job...Heck, I update the pick of the year contest every weekend...Doesn't take me very long to do it...but someone else can take that over next year...Doug

ROB is HUGE, yet again. He is undisputed king of the POTW with an astounding 84% gain over the past 13 weeks, averaging about 5% each week on his POTW score. DMK showed us he is human after all, with 2 consecutive weeks of negative scores. Still, a 30% gain over just 6 weeks picking ain't too shabby. Nice job, DMK, and kudos to Sticky, who rounds out 3rd with an impressive 15% gain over the quarter. Congrats to all who finished in the green for the past 13 weeks, including Diogenes, Gatorman, Peanuts, He Who Hops in Caustic Soda, and me! :D
Thanks, Rob, for pointing out the discrepancy in NBB's score. Unfortunately for him, that 1% is what kept him just shy of the green group. :p Better luck next time, NBB!

p.s. ... and as long as I personally have the time and the interest to keep up with it.
I just want to set the record straight. This forum never had a problem functioning with anyone's language, profanity, or conduct before Rob ever came here. There have been plenty of foolish arguements and disagreements but they always seemed to work themselves out amicably on their own. There has never been any problem in the exchange of ideas or concepts on trading or investing between any of us before or after Rob.
Rob left the forum and the POTW in a lurch and without any regard as to whether or not the forum or the POTW continued operational because of his feelings on the general use of profanity in our postings. I'm sure there were plenty of times when light profanity was used in the heat of arguement or discourse to strengthen someone's feelings about an issue. I never felt that the more profane curse words were used that much where it became noticeable or uncomfortable and never heard anyone, except maybe NewBorn, voice any opinion about their use or an increase in the use of them. That was his decision and no one forced him to take that position.
I hate it when someone or something places everyone in a spot where the normal function is disrupted because of them and I refuse to let anyone or anything hold me hostage or ransome because of that. My regard for this forum and the POTW is what made me step forward and take over the scorekeeping. No one else stood up. I'm not about letting anyone influence my lifestyle or comfort because of their feelings and I wasn't about to let the POTW go down the drain in that way.
I never wanted to use Rob's spreadsheet or anything that was his for the simple reason that we were getting by without his spreadsheet before him and I saw no reason why we wouldn't be able to work our way through this small and temporary inconvenience without any disruption of the game even without his spreadsheet. But even though no one offered or stood up to take over for even a day or two to keep it going there were still those that had to have it a certain way although they weren't up to doing it themselves. It was a bad decision on my part to use his spreadsheet and in my gut I knew it would come back to bite me on my ass. It is an awesome tool but nothing is indespensable in this life and his is not the only code that could be written to perform in the same fashion as his spreadsheet. It was only a matter of time.
Now that two weeks have gone by and the POTW never missed a beat and the profanity is gone Rob thinks that maybe he would like to come back and take over the scorekeeping duties again. But with the stipulation that this site remains a respectable place to exchange trading ideas. Can anyone who has been here for some time say that it has been anything but a respectable place to exchange ideas on anything. And in the future from this point forward who is going to set the standards and rules governing our behavior and conduct. Are we going to be held ransome for want of a scorekeeper or a spreadsheet. What is the difference regarding our conduct if Rob gets another hair up his ass and decides that things aren't going the way he wants them to or if he just loses interest and decides that he's had enough.
You can do whatever you want to do as far as who keeps score or runs the POTW. I only wanted to keep it going and to show everyone that the whole is larger than any small part and that nothing is indespensable. My feelings haven't changed. I still don't think the need for profanity is justified but can't see where a light profanity or curse word is what we are judged by. Are we a bunch of hypocrites?
Personally speaking no one holds me for ransome or hostage. The one thing that I regret and hate myself for is when I comply with everyone for their sake and forego my gut feelings about something that I know beforehand will come back at me. I regret ever having used Rob's spreadsheet. I knew it was a mistake. And thank you NBB for the simple show of support. Et tu brute!! Your little smiley certainly made the dagger in my heart that much more pleasant. I'll remember your haste in making that decision.

Dearest Ski: I realize I've only been here a very short time, but for you to step up and take on the responsibility for the POTW was, for me, an admirable thing to do. I couldn't find anything derogatory that could have provoked your response above, but I might have missed it. I, personally, am grateful that you stepped up to the plate. If Rob wants it back, is it a wise thing to give it up now? You are doing a fine job IMHO and a few preliminary glitches are expected. Not that I have anything against Rob, I just don't know him as well as I know you. Why not continue? Especially because you've put in such a great deal of time and effort to get it right!
Sometimes I have to restrain myself from saying, well, I shouldn't say the words I am thinking. And I do restrain myself online, only because I don't think it's particularly professional, which this forum really is.
Just another opinion, supportive of your efforts... THANKS! river
I was going to keep my mouth shut...Because I am well aware that I have a knack for ticking people off...I'm not stupid...But after reading Ski's post I decided to voice my opinion on the subject now.
This is not Rob's Forum...I like Rob and I wished him well on the thread he started. But as I posted ...I think he is being hyper-sensitive...I do not think that profanity is a problem here...If I...or others... want to say Damn, Crap or whatever within reason... I personally think it is OK...I do not think demeaning comments about sex, religion or race are appropriate...And I don't believe I've ever seen that here...But even if I had...The choice to remain would be mine...I would never try to hold anyone hostage if they disagreed with me.
I don't necessarily agree with everything that Ernie and Karel do to control this forum...I've sent them some suggestions in the past...They can decide for themselves...And it appears to me that they run this place w/ a pretty much "Hands Off" approach...I have absolutely no problem w/ that...I'd run things a little differently if I was in charge...But then again, I've run 4 of my own forums into the ground...So running forums is probably not my forte.
I did not like the way Rob just abandoned the scorekeeping duties at a moment's notice...And as I said...I commend Ski for stepping up to the plate so fast.
I will not beg Rob to come back...I will not allow him to dictate what I can or cannot post...If Rob wants to stay...Great!!...If he wants a forum with a bunch of language censorship...Then let him start his own Forum.
Hopefully, Rob and his buddies will not take what I have to say in the wrong way...But I think that I am entitled to my own opinion...Just like the rest of you...Best To All...Doug(IIC)

You're pretty hard to figure out, dude.
Yeah, I left the scorekeeping duty on pretty short notice. Guilty as charged. Guilty of trying to maintain a modicum of decency around here. So nevermind all the many many hours I put into the contest over the past year. Just forget all of that. It never happened. I didn't do a thing as far as y'all are concerned. Bunch of ingrates.

Let me tell 'ya something ROB...I have no idea what conversations took place between you and SKI...But let me enlighten you a little...The way I look at it is that you are trying to force us to bow to your wishes...You are not in charge here...I'm not either...Take a look at the Chopping Thread...Mr M made a request...It was not a directive...But I think you'll see that I understood that he is in charge...So I made a conscious decison to abide out of respect (although I think he was really talking to Toby)...But you have no authority here...Sure, you can make suggestions...as a member...Just like I can...But I posted on your thread you started...You should be directing your requests to those in charge...Did you do that???...What did they say???...Your censorship ideas are not my cup of tea...I don't see what you are saying as a problem...And now you said above that you "Don't Care"...So take it or leave it...We all have a choice.
Best of Luck...Doug(IIC)

This is what I said. Read it closely to see if there is anything there that isn't the truth. I'm just setting the facts down as they were and are. You want it back you've got it back. I stated initially that I wanted to do my own thing but Lye, specifically, stated his feelings about my scorekeeping and his feeling on it. Spike asked my why I wasn't using your spreadsheet and you offered out of the goodness of your heart. I accepted. I gave you every bit of recognition and praise that anyone could regarding the effectiveness and ease of use of your sheet. I picked it up and ran with it from the cold start after you left without any notice or regard for the game leaving everyone in the game holding the bag. But that is ok. I tried to be as congenial and as sensitive as I could with your feelings about what you were doing as far as leaving the forum. But you make is sound like we are a bunch of depraved profane using animals. In several private messages I was outspoken on your returning to the forum and the contest. No one including myself forced you into your actions. What are we supposed to do because you left stop living. You left the forum and the contest on your own accord but you reserve the right to pick out the errors at your leisure. Your timing was impeccable. Why didn't you point the mistake with NBB when it happened and it would have been straightened out.
This forum is bigger than any one part of it including you and me. Spare me the crap about how I am. Everyone here knows how I am from my actions and you from yours. The only thing I did was to pick it up after you dropped it without notice. Now you want back in but only if we can guarantee that it will be according to the way you want it to be and then only if you have the time and maintain the interest in doing it. Spare me this please. This was always a decent forum before you got here and will be after you or I leave. When giving or doing something for someone always give from the heart regardless of the way things turn out. If they don't turn out the way you want or expect them to and you can't live with that then you shouldn't be giving it in the first place if you feel the way that you do. It's yours now to take and run with it or it's no ones and goes down the drain. Just don't expect me to sit by and listen to you about how we should conduct ourselves or the way we are.
Lye, don't talk to me about being friends and certainly let's not be hypocrites about the profanity thing.

Rob, forgive me please, I don't know you. But, my impression is that you are having a hissy fit and over-reacting over something rather trivial. You are now jealous that Ski has taken over the spot that you relinquished? I personally think that he was very considerate to all on this board to step up to the plate when you unceremoniously dumped everbody with no warning.
If all the protagonists here could pull back on the testosterone levels, maybe you all could start behaving like intelligent, caring and reasonable adults. river

Congrats to Mary, Iceman, and the Skier….sorry for being late with the congrats. I’ve been very stupid crazy busy with school work.
I’ll take STLD long….thanks for keeping score Ski.
Ski please put me In CBT-LONG thanks have a good day
I would like to say a few things for the record. While I did did leave off from scorekeeping in the POTW rather abruptly, it was not "without warning." All anyone needs to do, if he or she wants to see the truth of the matter, is look at my posts in this thread and in the thread I started called "A Humble Request," and put together a little timeline, paying attention to not only what I said but also the posts I was responding to. That may be more work than anyone might care to do, and I understand that. But doing so would disprove the notion that I stopped keeping score "without warning."
Why did I do it? Because I saw something good deteriorating, and I wanted to prevent that from happening. Nothing more, nothing less. Is that a crime? As some have correctly observed, this is not my Web site, and I am not even the moderator. This is obviously true; therefore I do not have any tangible means to enforce rules of propriety. If I had those means I would use them, but I don't. Yet I still saw a trend heading in the wrong direction, and if this trend were to continue, it would ruin something that I value, something I have grown to love and appreciate. So I did the only thing I could do in my circumstance. I made the decision to try to use what little influence I had at my disposal to take a stand for what is right and good. What some have flippantly and incorrectly referred to as "censorship," a poilitcally-charged buzz word, is really nothing more than an appeal to common decency. I don't think many realize how demanding it can be keeping the score here week in and week out over a long period of time. And I had done it for something like nine months running. And over that period of time I thought I had found some "friends" here. I thought maybe if I mustered up the courage to take a stand for a worthy and good thing, that perhaps my "friends" might back me up on it. And indeed at first it seemed like that might even be the way it was going, even if just a little.
When Skiracer stepped up and took the bull by the horns, I praised him for it in private messages to him and to Lyehopper. I admired his courage. At the same time I believed he was going to find it probably more challenging than he realized, especially since his areas of expertise do not include working with Excel spreadsheets, as he said himself. I saw him struggling with it and wanted to help him, since that what "friends" do when they see a "friend" who needs help. So I threw together an Excel spreadsheet on docs.google.com and gave him colaborative access to it. I encouraged him to look at how the formulas are built, to read the Excel help screens on the worksheet functions being used. In fact I encouraged him to copy those formulas into his own Excel spreadsheet and modify them to suit his own needs. He had several questions he posted to me in private messages, and I carefully tried to thoroughly answer his questions. I probably spent as much or more of time doing that than I would have had I continued keeping the score myself. So I hadn't really abandoned the contest at all, as all this was going on "behind the scenes." Concurrently with this I was also exchanging a few lengthy private messages with certain other forum members, including Tatnic, about the matter of using respectable language on this forum, which is public after all.
After two weeks I could see that Skiracer was beginning to get a real understanding of just how demanding this scorekeeping job can be. (Try it for nine months, Skiracer. Try it for nine months, anyone! I dare you. And after you have done so, don't you dare make the mistake of expecting you have any right whatsoever to make any simple requests.) So when Ski openly suggested I take the job back, the job that IIC referred to as "thankless"—one of the few things he's said recently that I can agree with—and since it did seem that perhaps the profanity thing was sort of ebbing, I thought perhaps this would be the right time to go with it and responded in the affirmative. Boy, what an eye-opening experience that was! Suddenly a couple of people whom I had begun to view as "friends" turned on me with spite and vitriol that I would never have imagined, putting me completely on the defensive. So I spoke up in my defense, only to be accused of "whining" and "wanting to get into a pissing match," when in reality nothing could be further from the truth.
I have done absolutely nothing to warrant the kind of shabby treatment I have received here. And I think you who have done this thing know in your hearts that I'm speaking the truth, whether or not you have the courage to admit it.

TBSI, long , please Ski.
I am a volunteer on quite a few boards of trustees (High School Financial Advisory Board, by invitation only; also elected to my homeowners association board, to name two). In very short order you develop a thick skin. People have their own agenda's. Everyone is different. Those who have respect for the human dignity of the person next to them, and stick by that purpose, can weather any onslaught of negativism. Rob is a good person and I congratulate him.

Rob,
I like you. I think your work on POTW was outstanding.
You aren't going to get everyone to agree with you. Not with the cussing, not with any justification of actions. It is my opinion that your best course of action is to do what you feel is right and do what you want to do to contribute to something that is bigger than any of its parts (this forum). I would respect any decision that you make, but you're fooling yourself if you think that anyone feels that they owe you anything in return for your contributions. There are those that give and those that take. Those that take should be grateful, but those that give should not do so for want of gratitude. You'll always be disappointed in the results.
I hope you stick around, because I am very grateful for all the great things you do: the handy-dandy Fibancci retracement worksheet, the revenue and earnings growth charts, the POTW tracking write-up and participation, your "Rob's Lobs" thread... dude, it's all great stuff and I miss it.
The thing is, is that I thought that what Ski did was HUGE of himself. And I am very grateful to him as well. I rather enjoyed the learning process that we could all see him going through, because it added that realism to the thread. I mean, here's a guy that DOESN'T really know all the stuff about Excel that some of us do, yet he was willing to put himself up there, errors and all, for OUR benefit. And this guy has a family and intense job to worry about...
He lifted me up because of what he did, not what he said. I have always been a firm believer in the old saying, "Actions speak louder than words"
I think your future actions will show all the doubters more than what you can say with the keyboard. Take my philosophy... slap them in the face with the results :D The ball is really in your court, not the people that say harsh things

Let Rob take the scorekeeping of the POTW. I have no problem with that at all. I do have a problem with being dictated to about something that really isn't a problem. I thought that I was doing a pretty good job but it was Rob's spreadsheet that he developed that was really doing the work. I made a few errors, mostly in haste and the fact that I'm really not in Rob's league with the Excel, but it didn't appear to be any big deal with the errors. After all it's only a game. Rob's accessment of our conduct here regarding the cesspool and the profanity seems to me to be somewhat farfetched. I don't see us as being that way in any shape or form. I guess it is a matter of perspective. I would just as soon forget about all of this and let Rob take care of the POTW and move on.
Without having had much time to do as much research as I would have liked, I'm picking PCP long.

Skiracer.... Your efforts were appreciated by all including me.... I just thought it was a crying shame that since Rob had already perfected and automated the POTW scorekeeping that his program might not be utilized...
I also hoped Rob would return because he is an asset to the forum..... and I would way rather have him around here than exercise my "rights" to curse here.... I can always call you on the phone (or go to work) if I want to exercise my "cursing rights."
As one who kept score for many months myself, I know the difficulty involved in accurately keeping up with this thing and it is, as IIC has stated, a "thankless job."
Ski, Thanks for you contribution to this forum and although you are a passionate man and one who never hesitates to speak your mind, I really respect your backing off in this instance.
Doug, Your contribution to the forum is also great and I hope you'll continue to play the POTW.
Now on to me.... It came to my attention over the past week that perhaps I was somehow responsible for Dave Steckler's absence and maybe some others. This is entirely possible, so I'd like to say right here and now that I always read Dave's thread and although I liked to argue with Dave I would really like to see him return to actively posting and speaking his mind as he always did. It's all the different personalities here that make this place work (imo) and I'd hate the forum to lose anyone.... Well, except "the stock boy" and that was just plain old fun.

Rob, I couldn't be happier that you have decided to take the reins. I don't know how things escalate to the point that they do at times but the general forum and the POTW are more important than any of us individually. Things get said that afterwards seem so foolish. I'm sorry for my part in all of this and am just glad to see you back and hopefully we can all put this behind us and move on at the best investing forum on the internet. I thought that sometime on Sunday I took MED long. I'll have to go back and look.
If you would go back to post #9273 you will see that I placed your spreadsheet up with a number of the earlier picks for the POTW. I had put up MED - long as mine but never mentioned it in a post. In all the turmoil that was going on I never mentioned it because I didn't think I was going to have to do that since at the time I was still keeping the score. But MED - long was my choice please.

Well, with recent history in mind I see a caveat here: a project like this needs stability, and for that stability it needs a keeper or keepers who are prepared to relativize their own interests a bit, for the benefit of this project. I hope I am belaboring the obvious. And in case you didn't realize: I speak from personal experience as a moderator of this board.

OH Yeah! Welcome back Mr. Rob dude!
I thought that I was a factor in Steckler's decision, but ultimately, he made it. I've regretted my posts to him, because he mentioned that he doesn't like holding hands, then he stopped posting...
To be honest...I thought that too. I think it was something you were saying about explaining reasons and he said something about doing your own homework...or something like that.
Now I realize that some here want to discuss details and reasons in depth...And that is a good idea...But everyone does not have the time or desire to do that. Maybe some here get many of their ideas from this forum and maybe for some this forum is the only real place they have to discuss stocks.
I get ideas at this forum but it is not my main idea source. I quit quite a few forums this year mainly because they were dying out or I just decided I needed to manage my time better...which I'm still dealing with.
Anyway, I believe Dave is a busy guy and maybe he just doesn't feel like taking the time to explain details...And I can appreciate that...However, I paid attention to what he was saying and I think I have a fairly decent idea where he is coming from...So when he posted ideas I knew it was up to me to do my own DD...That was fine with me.
I'm rambling here...But my take is that he didn't really want to participate in in-depth discussions...And to be honest...I don't either...But I find no fault with people that do...And to be honest, I've benefitted from reading many of them...Anyway, I wouldn't worry much about it...I'd like to see Dave post again...But people come and go...Maybe he'll come back???Best, Doug

STKY, I can identify with that notion.... As a young man (with time to burn) you Might consider building a scorekeeping program of your own. http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
I have an idea for you.... Or anyone else that might have aspirations as a future POTW scorekeeper.
Come up with a system that's proprietary and uniquely yours and prove it out behind the scenes. Perfect your scorekeeping system to where it only requires about thirty minutes of your time per night (because it will rule your schedule otherwise).... It would be nice if you included running totals for each player on a quarterly and annual basis. You could also come up with charts or graphs to show each players performance.... As scorekeeper you also have the privilege of modifying the rules. Then when you want to unveil it just say so. I'm sure Rob doesn't plan on keeping the POTW score indefinitely.... But remember this, Rockin'Rob has set a "high bar" of quality for future scorekeepers to strive for.

Going into this week I decided to choose from the open technicaltrades.net portfolio (http://www.technicaltrades.net/technicaltradesnet-open-portfolio/) and I specifically wanted a short. PARL was easily the best of them all when I looked at triangles and the weekly Bollinger Band action.

It's where you work out the size of the gap, then project it beyond the gap (in the direction of the gap) for the exact width of the gap. You'd be surprised how often it actually occurs. PARL has a $2.50ish gap projection target. I reckon it's going to hit it.
What are the fundies for PARL like anyway?

Okay. The chart for yesterday (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showthread.php?p=71762) has been corrected. Please let me know if you see anything that looks incorrect.
As many of you may recall, early on when I first started keeping score, I was pulling closing prices from yahoo.com, and we noticed that for some reason they were often a little off from the majority of other sites' reported prices. At that point I began using businessweek.com instead, and ever since then there appeared to be little or no such problem—until yesterday.
Obviously there was a problem somewhere in the chain between businessweek's servers and those of the service from which they get their info feed. But when I got up early this morning and rechecked businessweek's reported closing prices, they appeared to have been corrected. The updated chart reflects those latest prices.
Hopefully this was a temporary glitch, and we will not have a similar problem again soon. If it becomes a recurring problem, I will have to find another source.
Again, thanks for your patience.
Hey Rob, Earlier today I traded out of my X short and took CYBE long.Oops! Sorry, Lyehopper! In all the closing price hoopla I neglected to fix that! I will make the correction, and it will be reflected in the next scorecard.

Okay everybody, I'm going to take this one before anyone else thinks about it! If THE RULES allow it, that is, and I can't remember anything that would disallow it. It's not a limit order. Is there a rule against IPOs? Well, here goes:
Please give me NMX long on the first tick of the IPO on Friday! PLEASE? Pretty please?? Otherwise, I'll have to go with my second choice that is not nearly as exciting. river

river,
Smart move. My question is do you get the price of the first shares traded after open ? What will it be 75? , 85? , 95? This is how the politicians and captains of industy spend $57 and get $85 for it. Unless you've got a few million in account you can't touch it.
------------billyjoe
That's an excellent question, BillyJoe. Perhaps there should be a rule about playing IPOs, such as: if a person plays an IPO at the issue price, then they must hold that position for a minimum of one hour.
To be honest, I don't know how the opening price of an IPO is recorded, i.e. whether it's the issue price or the price of the first sale. If the latter, then I think no such rule would be needed.
Does anyone know which it is?

Right! Which, of course, is why I'm buying it with the millions and millions I have in my brokerage account (not my fun money account). I'm expecting the first shares traded will be at least 20 points above the highest price quoted, so you're sure in the ballpark. For the POTW, I am hoping to get the ask on the opening tick, which is most probably going to include that 20+++ premium. Goodness knows what I'll really be able to buy it at. It'll probably cost me more than that while waiting in the queue! river

Rob,
IBD always lists the performance of their top IPO's as the difference between issue price and current price. This is very misleading as very few can get in on the top IPO's at issue price.

New-born Baby confounds the entire board, leaving us all in a state of utter shock and disbelief, as he launches like a bottle rocket, passing up even the formidable Uphill Racer!!! These two have definitely hit three cherries this week and set the bar to dizzying heights!!! Way to go, dudes!!!

STKY, I think ya gotta post your play for next week after the close on Friday and before the close on Monday dude.... Today is just Wednesday.

Rob, I think the price of the first sale sounds very fair. riverI think so too, and that's how we will handle it this time; however, I'm going to take note of how the opening price is recorded (issue price vs. first sale) before settling on how the rule is to be stated.

Upon thinking about this a little more, I remember watching an IPO closely one time. As I recall, the ticker debuted with one sale at the issue price. After that, there was no trading for quite a while. I had the feeling the MMs were getting their ducks in a row before the onslaught. So, if that's what happens on Friday, forget the issue price. I'll take the first tick when the fun begins, if that's agreeable to you and everyone else here. river

Look at the bright side, Rob. This is a game and not your real portfolio.
As an aside, I know I can't be a winner all the time, but might I say that it really bites to have had such a nice win last week and to be hanging around in the middle of the pack this week. My bright side is that I sold VIAC, which is not doing well this week, and my HANS pick is doing better (the last time I checked anyway).
Well, New-born Baby bailed on AOB and is sitting pretty with a HUUUGE 17.62%!!! Beautiful play, New!!! Shhhhh .... <whispering> nobody tell him he'd have a little more than 22% if he'd have held it. <ok, stop whispering now>
Mr. Speed Racer gave back a little of his HUGE gains today, but maybe he's just applying the clutch to shift into high gear tomorrow!! Sometimes MED means "medium," but there ain't nothin' medium about an 11.49% gain in four days!!
As Alice looks through the looking glass, things that used to be small now seem so big, and what was huge, like his lead over the One Who Hops in Caustic Soda, now appears quite small and still shrinking.

I'm betting anything that NB sits in cash without making another pick for tomorrow. That would be the easy and safe way out. Maybe AOB goes up again tomorrow without NB and MED goes up enough to pull it off and if NB would have stayed in he would have held first place. Maybe if I .... nah I don't think so.

Anytime, NBB! That's what this whole forum thing's all about, isn't it? I just hope this one turns in the direction of BRR rather than my other pinky GFCI. It definitely has the potential to do either.
[. . .] might I say that it really bites to have had such a nice win last week and to be hanging around in the middle of the pack this week.Mary, your net gain so far in 4 days is 3.52%. There is nothing that "bites" about that in my book. In fact, if you could do that with regularity, which is virtually impossible, in a short time you'd be extremely wealthy.
Figuring 252 trading days in a year, if you could gain 3.52% every 4 days and compound it, that would equal a 782% annual gain. If you could do that for three years, a $10,000 initial investment would be worth $6.86 million. Of course, anyone who tries to do something like that realizes in a very short time that it can't be done.
I'll tell you what really "bites." The 2nd week I played, I picked ISRG on earnings week and ended up with a -16.55%.

Oh, baby!!! Oh, baby!!! Like a giant boa constrictor, New-born Baby coils around our throats and strangles the life out of us!!! And ... of course ... if you spell boa backwards, you get AOB, which for New-born this week stands for Awesomely Outstandingly Bodacious!!!
And as if one Babe isn't enough at the top of the list, the silver medal this week goes to another babe ... the one who lives in a van ... down by the river!! Riverbabe boldly ventured out and took the NYMEX IPO, that opened this morning at more than twice the issue price, and stampeded us all face down into that slimy riverbank!! And check this out ... this is Riverbabe's first medal performance since she put on those chest-high waders and waded out into this torrent!! Congratulations, River!!
Less than 2/10 of a percent separates numbers 3, 4, and 5 this week, but it is the One Who Hops in Caustic Soda that thinly prevails over Speed Racer and Alice B. Toklas to nose them out for the bronze!! Nice one, Lyehopper!! Nice one!!
Among all the active players this week, the average was a very healthy gain of 2.23%, bringing the average for the fourth quarter to 0.93%! As Martha might say, this is a good thing!

NBB, what did you put in your wheaties on Monday? A very impressive win! No doubt, Baby, you are $$$HUUUGE$$$ :D Way to go!!!
Riverbabe, Lyehopper, a valient effort on your part, and for that, my opinon of both of you for this week, is that you are BIG :)
Mr. Rob, for the next week, I would like to begin with a short position in SWHC. Take that Spike! :p
Thanks for all the hard work, keep up the great job!
I would like to begin with a short position in SWHC.Well, with a 30-day avg. volume of > 850k, you shouldn't have any problems switching to another play if you decide to. :)

Hey Peanuts! I think it's a good short, dude! Short stop limit at $12.40 (http://www.technicaltrades.net/2006/11/18/swhc-3/) is my preference....good luck this week. I am quietly confident that my ERF short will outperform your SWHC short this week..... hehehe I'm due some big numbers, peanuts, so look out! lol

Stuff like this has happened to me before on other sites and it's VERY frustrating. That's why I now highlight and copy my replies before I click anything else. That way, if what I originally typed is gone, I can paste it back just as it was before it ended up in cyber-la-la-land.

Problem is that I never seem to be able to highlight, right click and copy here...But lo and behold last night I discovered that you can highlight and click edit to copy...wish somebody had told me that a long time ago :(

Glad you brought that up...I rarely use keyboard shortcuts 'cause I never remember them...So I just found this handy little list:

For the contest this week, unless I change my mind, I will take my chances with IntercontinentalExchange (ICE) long. No, this has nothing to do with our resident Ice Man.
Here's why I like ICE: Good, strong revenue and earnings growth (always my first concern), HUGE 32.9% R.O.A. and 43.2% R.O.E. (these numbers vary according to different info sites), zero debt, and steadily increasing earnings projections. Also, as you can see from this one-year chart, it's blue skying right now.
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/6641/ajc2.png (http://imageshack.us)
This company IPO'd on Nov. 16, 2005, so one year, plus one trading day, amounts to its entire history so far.
In view of that nearly 7% pop last Friday, I would be less inclined to choose this one if it weren't for that HUGE spike in volume that accomapnied it. That's why I like to look at volume, Mr. Runner. Big price spikes on flimsy, anemic volume are almost sure to give it all right back. The chances that the gains will hold, while not certain, are easily superior when you see huge volume like that. That's one thing I believe Mr. O'Neil has right.
The P/E is pretty high in the mid to upper 80s, but it's more than 2˝ x the forward P/E.

I saw where you posted that earlier...Sorry to hear it. However, if you watch the MACD 2,13,12 you can see that it was heading down last Thursday. This is in no way foolproof but since Peanuts mentioned it I have found it useful on 5 min, 60 min and daily charts. Have not checked much on weekly or monthly charts. 1 min charts seem to be too "whippy" on this MACD...Doug

Happy Thanksgiving Wise GUY!!! Besides, It's Moe who has that problem, why you think I'm curly, NYUK, NYUK!!
Wow!!! Riverbabe busted our blocks with a well-timed switch of horses in mid-river!!! Excellent play, there, Riverbabe!!!
Mr. Racer turned the screws on the rest of us about another quarter turn, picking up an additional four tenths of a percent!!
Gwhiz and his TGB sunk a mine shaft and pulled out enough profit to land him in the number three position, but there are a number of players right on his tail waiting for a chance to extinguish that carbide lamp on his helmet!
And how could we let a 14%+ one-day difference go by without mentioning it? Look at how Websman pulled out of that tailspin! Hey, Webs, you shoulda bought Birch Mountain just before the close yesterday! Then you'd be in the driver's seat! Don't you just love how perfect hindsight is?
There will be no market activity tomorrow, and Friday will be an abbreviated session, but as we all know, anything can—and sometimes does—happen in just a couple hours. Be there or be trapezoid ... wait, that's not how it goes ... oh well, just be there!

The dreaded Uphill Racer put about 15 extra heavy coats of wax on those Rossignols, pointed the tips at the peak of the mountain and then reached around and ignited that rocket strapped to his back, sending him straight to the top with 16.2%!!! MED was a HUGE pick this week, Uphill!!! Congratulations on a spectacular win!!!
Blockbusting Riverbabe gave Uphill Racer one heck of a run for his money this week with, not one but ... count 'em ... two outstanding picks!! Congrats on a HUGE 10.23% gain and taking the silver for the second consecutive week!!
And then comes Dancin' Pete Hansen! He clicked his heels, put the moves on ol' Gwhiz and fandangoed him right out of the bronze! Fred and Ginger would've been envious of that fancy footwork, Pete!
Holy Toledo! That's four weeks in a row that the combined totals for the active players have us in the black, and three of those are more than 2%! Y'all deserve a million-dollar prize to divide amongst yourselves! Would anyone care to pony up the million? PM me!

Lye,
Nothing like winning the POTW and owning a couple thousand shares of the stock at the same time. Well maybe sticking a 12 pointer, which I've never done so I don't really know how that feels yet. Thanks Lye. Alot of us had a great week this week. They're liable to be writing an article about all of us in the IBD if we keep this up.

Ski,
If you win next week , I'll probably be selling MED. Don't want to appear to be a pig or braggart. Has anyone ever won with the same pick twice?

Billyjoe,
There are always going to be peaks and valleys from normal consolidations and pullbacks. I would exit the position myself to take as much of the gains as I can get if I see it stalling and re-enter on the pullback once it bottoms out. I can see it going over 15 or higher. Do your own thing of course but keep those gains intact.
BDHHY Long please.
Good to see that you are still among the living...IIC
Congrats to SKI, River and Pete...Excellent pix...Doug(IIC)

Good to see you around, Scifos. :) Where did you find this stock? What is going on with it? A pinky that might blast off, eh?

WOAH! Skiracer smokes past all of us at blazing speed. MED was a great pick, and it's even better that he owns it. Ski, you are $$$HUUUGE$$$ dude
Riverbabe and Peter Hanson, outstanding picks like that would put you in the category of the HUGE ones on any other week than last. But Ski's outstanding patience really paid off for him, so I guess the two of you are only BIG
AP long for me this week, Rob. Thank you very much, and keep up the great work!! :)
Spikefader, my SWHC short didn't work out as planned...

Ski, nice come from behind to beat me! Congratulations! I won't hold it against you! Happy to see you so exuberant about your win, and you should be! You stuck with it and it paid off bigtime.
And congratulations to Pete! Great job!
I'll hold off on next week's pick for now - need to find it! L&K to all, Riverbabe.

River,
It's always nice to win the POTW but twice as nice when I do win because I only play in the POTW what I own so if the play is good enough to win the POTW it usually means a decent score for me. I thought for sure you had it locked up this week with the short day on Friday but there was a little something or another on Bernie Schaefers intraday Blog that set it off so there was some racing luck going on there for me. This type of finish is what's beginning to make this weekly contest so enjoyable to participate in. That and the caliber of the participants is definitely raising the bar of late. So glad that you are on board with us. Definitely a positive affect. Good luck this coming week.

..Spikefader, my SWHC short didn't work out as planned...Yeah, neither did my almost-pick of ERF short. You would have won by 1.6% had I stuck with it.
SWHC has got some conflicting TA in my book. The weekly is worth looking at:

Better luck this week dude. You should have been playing that parabolic wonder, CAL, from your Peanut's growth portfolio (http://parabolicpicks.technicaltrades.net/index.php/archives/295), +27.69% since you released it 1 month ago!

Spikefader,
what is that green indicator on the top of the graph?
I'd be tickled pink if you could explain it to me.
Thanks
