Congrats Spike. I thought on Thursday that HOM was going to go off when it reached $7 intraday and then the bottom kind of fell out. On Friday it looked like it wanted to take off an my heart was beating thinking it was going to be a close race is I could just get it to go over $7 or so but again no cigar. I own it from around the $6 range so I don't feel to bad. Nice couple of plays on your part. I know Doug wants to win every week so I'm glad you got him in the end. Don't tell him I said that.
Billyjoe, nice closing to finish 3rd.

Congratulations to Spike, IIC, and BJ!
Hey guys, what's your secrets for picking stocks with high gain for the week?
The stocks that are picked for the POTW, I have never heard of. Where do you find them?
Most of my screening (I think) looks good for long term but doesn't work for POTW.
How you I go about thinking and screening out for the short term gain?
I also forgot. Rob please short BBBB. Thanks.
I'm going to try this again.
The Q's going to go long on NUTR this week.

I pick stocks in different ways...but it is usually the chart pattern...I will put up my Killer Watch List later today on my thread...Look at the charts I post...you will see that many have recently made new highs...pulled back on lower vol. and are starting to move back up on increasing vol....I have not even looked at any stocks yet today but that is my fave pattern...Doug(IIC)

Try the scanning hardware at businessweek.com. It's real easy to use and there are hundreds of parameters that you can set up. Mess around with it on your own for awhile and see what you come up with. If you put enough time an energy into it you will get some positive results but you have to put the time into it. You'll begin to learn more of what you want to look for by doing it yourself.

Well...we gotta problem...I just scaned over 300 charts...And nothing's there...although there are quite a few in the downward slope so there may be something to watch when there is a reversal...I'm gonna pass on the Killer List this weekend...Best, Doug
PS...Here are 3 that are remote possibles though...FTO EAGL GPIC...I had GPIC on my watchlist but did not catch it...vol too low for me anyway...But it might be up Peanut's alley since he likes some thin ones???

I'll be honest, GPIC is part of my MOMO watchlist, but the current price does not impress me. I see a 1+ year C&H pattern developing, but the handle needs to be put on this bad boy. I really like the future prospects of the company.

Hadn't looked at the longer term pattern Peanuts...But now that you mention it I can see CwH's on a monthly and weekly chart...They are not classic patterns but they do qualify...nice eye...Doug(IIC)
PS...didn't run my CwH scan...Let me do that and see if anything pops up...if so, I'll post the charts on my thread.

Thanks all. And congrats IIC for a great performance and for the spirit of good competition. Bad luck peanuts for dropping outa the race. And grats billyjoe! Another solid performance.
On the averages, grats to all with positive averages. The Top 6 has a YTD average of 1.22% each per week, which when you think about performance of the broader market is HUUUGE. Gatorman's 1.7% on the average each week is amazing ain't it?! Congrats dude, keep up the great work. I remember back in Feb you picked FTEK and I did a chart for it here (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showpost.php?p=41176&postcount=6691) in the old scientific thread. Well since then I see it had a fine bullish move from your buy level of around 10.50 to a high of 18.00 (+71%) in the space of 8 weeks. That was a great call, and it's picks like that one that has left us all in your dust.
I really should go through my whole thread one day and pick out all the fine stock picks brought to that thread by other forum members. Shoot, someone should go through THIS thread and find all the fantastic calls by others; there's gotta be a bunch of excellent calls. I recall their were some people who commented that this thread had little real value but I couldn't disagree more and such a review would confirm the view that this thread is one of the strongest assets of this forum. Not only is it great for commeraderie but some really quality picks end up on the pages. I think the numbers aren't supportive of that observation on an average basis simply because one of the most important elements of successful trading (I believe) isn't followed; i.e limiting the downside risk for the losers. I bet if a max drawdown rule was applied, and all the picks run through that model, the numbers would rock. Let's face it....the true gems that come to this table don't endure drawdowns of very much...they usually take off for immediate green and don't look back. And the true strength of those type of winners doesn't have a chance to show itself relative to the averages of all participants and the overall POTW averages when the massive losers are allowed to run blood into the street. And when you add the penalty rule to the equation it only gets worse.
Anyway, I think this thread rocks, and does have real life value, and kudos to billyjoe for starting the thread, and Lye and Rob for making it what it is today. And kudos to all people who throw their hat into the ring to compete. It shows character to open oneself up to public accountability and allows us to come together in sporting competitive spirit and produce something worth a value far greater than what the averages might reflect.
Good luck next week all.

I agree. AXR makes a lot more sense as the Q-E pick than NUTR does at this point. NUTR does seem to be a good value here (but what do I know?), however, it's lacking in the mo-mo category right now.

I'm taking CRDN long.
. . . why wouldn't MM take AXR long this week? If I read this thread correctly, his pick is NUTR or something along those lines. For one thing, $$$Mr. Market$$$ is going to sell AXR when it hits 57.45, and the moment Ernie sells sells a particular stock, then Quasi-Ernie sells too. Now AXR closed Friday at 53.27, and 57.45 is less than 8% away. The Q likes to let them run if they're going to run. Also, the Q thinks NUTR has less downside risk at this point.
I see a 1+ year C&H pattern developing, but the handle needs to be put on this bad boy. I really like the future prospects of the company. The Q also sees a huge cup & handle formation (http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=NUTR&p=W&yr=2&mn=0&dy=0&id=p49802352237) with NUTR starting in Dec. '04.

Thanks for clarifying. When there is no trade during the minute on which you posted, the opening price you get is the next trade, whenever that occurs.
However, since you committed the sin of editing you pick post, you now get the price at the time of your latest edit (10:13) because it is the lower of the two and this is a short position. You would have had 7.18, but now you will have to settle for 7.08. You should never edit your pick post, as the timestamp is the ONLY proof of your entry point. (Think about it. It makes sense.) If this was a long position you would have gotten the higher of the two prices. You must not have been listening when this was discussed recently.

Nice play on EBAY Rob!....http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/images/icons/icon14.gifThanks, Lye. Yeah, 27.79 gets me back to a fraction above zero for the week; hopefully she'll forge on past that point. I still think SAFT is a bargain at this level, but the trading is pretty thin, and even though it seems to have pulled out of its tailspin from this morning, there didn't appear to be a whole lot of promise for a good return by the end of the week. So I cut 'er loose.
Edit: Oh, and by the way, if you've been following Doc Jack's thread, then you know I also bought EBAY in real life. It's a freakin' awesome cash cow.
Ray, I think I can safely speak for the rest of the players when I say: "UNCLE!"
Very nice play on the silver prospectors, Runner! "Hiyo, SILVER!" And a bystander said, "Who is that masked man? We didn't even get a chance to thank him."
Gary, the stooge, 611, wirelessly transmits himself into the third position with Relm Wireless (RWC), after having just gotten in ... you guessed it ... "under the wire" yesterday.

My all-time favorite was George The Animal Steel. The green tongue put the personality over the top. Jimmy Super-fly Snooka comes in a close second. Andre was one of the greatest, even out of the ring... there are stories of him on the road leaving "presents" for the hotel staff that would amaze you. It's too bad he died young.
Nothing in wrestling is real, except the way it makes you feel.

David Hasselhoff: You really think those Green Beret Karate tricks are gonna help you against all these boys?
Billy Jack (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0490871/): Well, it doesn't look to me like I really have any choice now, does it?
David hasselhoff: [laughing] That's right, you don't.
Billy Jack (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0490871/): You know what I think I'm gonna do then? Just for the hell of it?
David Hasselhoff: Tell me.
Billy Jack (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0490871/): I'm gonna take this right foot, and I'm gonna whop you on that side of your face...
[points to Hasselhoff's right cheek]
Billy Jack (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0490871/): ...and you wanna know something? There's not a damn thing you're gonna be able to do about it.
David Hasselhoff: Really?
Billy Jack (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0490871/): Really.

hmmmm, 26 is hard to pass on...
Tell "Buck" this:
Have Buck make up a story about Michelle hitting it really big in the stock market and that because she wants her leach, I mean daughter, out of her own house and to begin her own life, that Michele is planning to buy a house for Tamika. All of this is supposed to be a surprise and Tamika will be getting her own house any time soon, but it will be a surprise that her mom will give her after all the money clears (which could be months, Buck should tell her- she's probably dumb). Tell Buck to pick up a drinking habit and go to massage classes. After Tamika starts believing his story, Buck should make his move on Tamika one day after he's been drinking. When they talk about the guilt afterwards, Buck needs to bring up how jealous Michele will be if she ever found out and that he doubts whether Tamika will ever get the house after Michele finds out. This way, Tamika will be afraid of telling her mom about the relationship. Now that Buck has a drinking habit and takes massage classes, he can head over to Michele's house a little early every day and keep up the relationship with Tamika and when Michele gets home, he can give her a massage- keeping her oblivious to the real story, and happy and relaxed to get a massage every day after work. While he is living the high life, he needs to be looking for another house. Because, eventually, the crap will hit the fan. And, he should be able to get rid of the house before Michele has a chance to burn it down. He should be able to use the excuse of having a drinking problem for at least a week. The relationship can last for months...

From Cash to Short NBR
Once again that li'l old beer-drinking, dart-throwing son-of-a-gun, Ray, has left us begging for crumbs from his table, whilst he roams about the malls with the lady of his dreams. Bullseye, dude!
Peanuts, known south of the border (or ... these days ... in many places north of the border too) as "Cacahuates," has come on very strong with a huge move on his NGA short, but then suddenly, without so much as a twitch of his monacle, shelled out of that and salted his earnings away into XWG, for which he picked up another 4/10%. ¡Que bueno, señor!
Speed Racer got a tip from his long-lost brother, Racer-X, to go long with HOM once again. Pops told him he was crazy and not to do it, but Speed always does exactly what Pops tells him not to do. So with that little fox, Trixie, by his side, Speed fastened his seat belt, adjusted his goggles, threw all his chips down on HOM and floored it. 9.2% later he still hasn't taken one peek into the rear-view mirror. Nice going, Speed!
The other players so far in the FG+ category are the Stooge, the Hustler, and Scifos; but Scifos' newlywed head is still in the clouds, so he probably couldn't care less.

I think Scifos's head is probably between somewhere else as it should be at this stage of the game an he probably could care less hopefully. I have a nice play set up for tomorrow if HOM goes south before 10 am. Just want to see what the open holds for HOM before I pull any triggers. Ray is out of his play and just might need another one to maintain that lead. If I open my mouth about XWG it'll go through the roof for sure but I like it to the downside from here. Ray find another pick for tomorrow.

Gary and Peanuts; nice jobs dudes. Fine percentages.
Ditto.... And honorable mention to Ski and Stky....
I'm especially impressed with 15 year old Stky. He made a nice gain using both his trades this week. First he profited short.... Then long.... WTG dude! Keep it up! http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
hmmmmm.... This 15 year old kid can play with all these experienced traders and beat 75% of them (including me) and our "Pro" members won't even bother to play.... Probably because they're afraid of being shown up by a 15 year old kid .....LOL!
Thanks Much Everyone, Looked Like Peanuts Had Me It Was A Good Contest In A Realy Bad Week

Thanks but I had many great teachers on this board. I couldn’t have done good without them.
Yeah ok, I will be 15 in September and I can’t wait to get my driving permit. Wow I didn’t know if I was going to make it this week. I was down over 10 points last week and it bummed me out for the weekend.
Once I notice HANS wasn’t on the IBD number one list anymore I wanted to buy back BBBB on Wednesday when I was up close to 6% and wanted to short HANS that day but I was unsure and scared. So researching some more to be sure but when I was done I was down a bit. I have to learn to trust my instinct when to buy, sell, and at the same time not to get too girly.
I’m happy with this week’s gain but I’m not sure I will be this lucky next week.
Thanks to everyone on the board for encouraging me to read IBD and to learn how to analyze the charts. I still don’t understand the chart but trying. Thanks again

I'll take EBAY (http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=EBAY&p=W&yr=3&mn=0&dy=0&id=p41564933322) long this week ... just as I did with my real $$$. I may be the idiot, but I think it's idiotic to be selling it at these levels (P/E 33.5). With gas prices going through the ceiling, on-line purchasing should become even more attractive—not to mention bargain-hunting. IMO, EBAY is a steal, boys and girls. The risk/reward ratio must be approching zero. http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/7310/cramersmiley4hc.gif (http://imageshack.us) Also, it has gone down the last 7 weeks in a row and 12 out of the last 13. This is the kind of fear upon which smart money can and does prey. EBAY's got one of the slickest business models in the world, and I view being able to buy it for this price as a gift. All just my opinion of course.
EBAY reports Q2 earnings on Thursday. Is that good or bad? You decide.

Rob,
You are simply wonderful. :D You really listed all the bullish factors that I look for when I take a stock long :D "Down seven weeks in a row" and "12 out of the last 13." Now that's real inspiration! I can see you now, giving a pep talk to the troops just before D-Day. :D They'd really be set to go when you get through with them.
Please forgive me, I am just playing with you. I really appreciate your work on POTW--and all your posts and work, I like it very much. But I just had to tease you on this one. :D

Well think of EBAY's dropping 7 weeks in a row like this: if you're standing under an anvil that's just been thrust into the air and you notice that, well, for the last ten consecutive one-tenths of a second in-a-row, it has gone upward; would you therefore reason: I have no problem standing in this spot, as it should continue to go upward? :D

I wanted Ernie to go with AXR because I figured it would be a loser all week. Remember the charts I posted before the pick? I said, "Don't pick AXR unless Ernie is going to get his 15% by shorting a stock."
That aside, I still have to tease you a little bit about something, don't I? :D And I really do think it is appropriate that you included a picture of your friend and mine, Mr. Cramer. That really does inspire! :D Now if you would just conjure up a picture of Wm. O'Neill to go with it . . . .
Now if you would just conjure up a picture of Wm. O'Neill to go with it . . . .I convinced Bill O. what a great bargain EBAY is, and his eyes bugged out.

You sold me on EBAY. Anything Wm. O'Neill pumps, well, it has to be hot! Question: is EBAY on the IBD top 100 this week? And what of AXR? Nobody much took my poll . . . and nobody agreed with me last week that AXR didn't deserve to be on the list. And it was number twelve. Pretty sick list, eh?

Come on, I think I've earned a little gloating rights here, going against the revered chartists with real dough and all.
Oh ... and by the way ... check out ALDA, which I also called. At least Spike backed me up on that one.
Who wants BIDU? "I do! I do!" said BoSox Jon, and he nonchalantly racks up 7.56% in one day! The fact that it gapped down 1.4% at the open from Friday's close didn't hurt 'im none either. Go, Bo!
What can I tell ya 'bout EBAY? It was cheap, so I bought it. Here's hoping today's price action is not a "flash-in-the-pan," and that there will be plenty more bidders out there bidding it up!
Kind of a gutsy move to be shorting oil drill rig suppliers, or whatever the heck NBR does, but Dio's not shy-o! And his short on NBR was not a dry hole! Nice play, Diogenes!

Are you in the green on your EBAY trade? I forgot your entry . . . was it $27.48 or something? I think I recall saying I didn't think EBAY would be called away from you at $27.50.
If I am correct in that the strike is $27.50, then I would suggest saving the gloating until expiration this Friday. I will be glad to admit I am wrong after Friday's close (if indeed I do prove to be wrong). First take the profit, then gloat, if you have to gloat. But gloating isn't a good habit to form. I think you know enough Bible to understand where I am coming from.
And I am glad for you sake that EBAy turned green today. I am not short the stock in real life. Best to ya, Rob!

No one knew about the symbol change until Monday morning. I thought Doug said he was going to be out of town for the week and wasn't going to be able to post or play this week. There's a rule in there somewhere accessing a 5% penalty for fibbing.
Geez...I go out of town for one day and Rob decides to deny my existance...Also, my streamer says it closed at 6.53.I haven't denied your existence, Doug. The source for the quotes on the POTW spreadsheet is businessweek.com, which as of yesterday still didn't have HSOA in its database. Though it still had Home Solutions listed under HOM, there was no data feed on it. So I went to nasdaq.com and got the following information:

I thought he was just kidding. He can't be serious about any of that post can he? Rob, I have it closing in my account at $6.53 so if you want to make the adjustment that's fine with me but no one knew of the symbol change before the open on Monday. Stockcharts didn't have or make the change until almost 12 pm yesterday an I couldn't bring a chart up on it until then. I can't imagine Doug being serious on that one. But it's early in the week so let's see how it plays out over the week. I'm still holding HSOA/HOM
Ski, I figured he was kidding too, which is why I didn't respond to the first post--not to mention that since he was apparently going to be incommunicado for a couple days, it seemed that any reply would probably go unread by the intended recipient.
Regarding the price, I'm assuming businessweek will have their act together by the end of the week, and if not I'll continue to accept nasdaq.com's "official" opens and closes. Incidentally, my streamer also had HSOA opening at 7.30 instead of 7.27, so it's like "six of one, half-a-dozen of the other."
Sheesh...nobody reads my posts...I said I wouldn't be available during market hours this week.
BTW...I knew about the symbol change...it was in the news.
And yes ski...I was simply giving you a hard time.
I'm in Houston right now...Pretty nice...met an internet buddy from another forum for dinner last night...meeting another one Thursday night in Dallas...Next time I'm in Virginia I'm gonna make a surprise visit to Lye...LOL...But it may be a while...last time I was in VA was 1969...Good luck...gotta run...Doug(IIC)

No one knew about the symbol change until Monday morning. I thought Doug said he was going to be out of town for the week and wasn't going to be able to post or play this week. There's a rule in there somewhere accessing a 5% penalty for fibbing.

Hi Rob
Please buy back AP at $28.22 and Short BBBB at $26.50 ThanksHiya, Van McCoy. I haven't checked the prices yet, but you will get whatever the opening price is at 12:25 p.m., the time of your post, regardless of the prices you posted. They may be the same, and they may not. That's the way it works, bud.

Edit: The first AP trade after 12:25 was 28.06 at 12:28.
The first BBBB trade at or after 12:28 was 26.50 at 12:29.
So you actually came out ahead on the deal, because your cover on AP was even lower. :)

Spike, EBAY reports Wednesday, time undetermined.
NBB ... With regard to scripture: ". . . and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again."—Jesus Christ, Sermon on the Mount, Matt. 7:2.
I got stopped out of my earlier EBAY trade, the one you're referring to. My current long position was taken Friday at 25.60 with no hedge this time.
Rob,
I was away from the computer and didn't see that you got stopped out of your first trade. Nice that EBAY was green again today, even if it was a small amount.

I think with the name and symbol change that Home Solutions of America is now listed on the Nasdaq. This in itself speaks for the company being basically on the up an up. I don't think they would have gotten the listing without it. Brutal day yesterday but that was a nice spike at the end of the day today. I like it even more now that it has gotten listed on the Nasdaq. Spoke with the main offices this morning an this last qtr. ended on June 30 and they have until Aug. 15 to report so the earnings report will be coming out soon or at least before Aug. 15. Bought more today at $6.25.

BoSox quietly maintains the lead with BIDU, up more than 7% so far. So what was it, Bo, that led you to the conclusion that this baby was going to take off this week?
Spikefader covered his short on SPF (a ticker curiously similar to his user name ... hmmmmm) and took one of Lyehopper's favorite stocks, GEHL, short. Spike's spiffiness has garnered him nearly 5% thus far.
EBAY came back strong this afternoon after declining most of the day and managed to close up a little. This face-off between me and New-born Baby will come to head tomorrow as the internet auction powerhouse reports Q2 earnings, evidently after the market closes.

While it's true you only get 2 trades per week in the POTW contest, that doesn't mean you can't throw your ideas out to the forum for discussion anyway. Just make a new thread, or post to Hot Pick of the Day, or whatever you feel like doing, and get some ideas going! That's what this whole thing's all about... POTW is just one feature.

Up on low volume is a bearish sign. Is this the time to short the stock: I don't know. Stocks can go up three days in a row on low volume, and then collapse. We've had some strong selling near the close.

Pittsburgh is notorious for the accent. Here's an article that describes it pretty well: http://itotd.com/articles/307/pittsburghese/
There are words mixed in there that you need to be from Pittsburgh in order to understand the sentences.
Here's another website that explains the region's dialect a little more directly:

Peanuts, I've known a few people who grew up in Pittsburgh. The thing that I've noticed about the way they talk that sounds funny to me is the way they pronounce words like "out." They pronounce it as though the "u" were not in the word. They don't go out of the house; they go "ott of the hoss." Also, they're the only people I've ever known who refer to rubber bands as "gum bands." ;)

Hi Ski
Oh thanks for mailing the disk and the link to the ETF site. This past weekend was the first time I’ve been to the mall since Christmas. Since my friends and I are not able to drive, we have to walk or take the bus anywhere we go. Our parents get mad when they drop us off and pick us up because we never come out on time to get picked up…LOL…we are usually half an hour or an hour late. I don’t like the mall much because when you go with a group of people the police harass you and no one wants to sell you anything because they think you will steal or don’t have any money. The same people and they police that treats us like crap sucks up to our parents when they take us shopping.
Most of my friends don’t even know what a stock is. They are very smart in school but have no common sense. I’m the opposite. They like computer programming, I took a C++ course with them last semester and I got a B-, they got A’s. I suck at programming.
I didn’t know anything about the stock market or anything until the beginning of this year when my grandfather gave his grand children stocks. I meet Jiesen in the BRKA board and he invited me over here. So you have to blame my grandfather and Jiesen for me being here…lol
I was thinking the gift that my grandfather gave me I can learn how to keep it or must learn to make it grow so that I can have a nice home, a fast car, and the equals to hot babes…LOL
I’m different to most kids when buying products, I don’t like to wear clothes the have names or logos on them. When should I buy a pair of Nike for $20,000 when the person that’s making that shoe is the same age as me living in another country making a dollar a day? Plus why should I pay to advertise for Nike or others? Why don’t they pay me to wear their names and logos like people that play sports? Lol sound stupid huh..sorry
Doesn't sound stupid at all to me, Van. I think exactly the same way. If something is "trendy" or "hip" and costs twice as much just because of that, I avoid it like the plague. If the majority of people thought the way I do, the people in the "fashion industry" would soon be looking for employment. Bunch o' air-headed freaks. Apologies to any forum members who may be in the fashion industry--it's not personal, really.

You sound like a nice kid with some brains. Most of the youngsters out there today, including my nieces and nephews, couldn't pour piss out of a boot for themselves, which doesn't make me feel any better towards them. I like to see strong character and some sense of logic in how people handle themselves an interact with others. As long as you keep it on that level you'll be ok with me an I enjoy and feel good providing some educational value an experience to your developement. I know that disc and email I sent you will help in furthering that developement. So keep up the good work and stay focused and you'll do good. Reading IBD can't necessarily help you with the POTW but it can help you learn about the market in general. The POTW is just a friendly contest.... Your real life portfolio is where "the rubber meets the road".... You against the market....
There are many things that can benefit you in that newspaper and you have to start learning somewhere (that's why I said to habitually read it cover-to-cover). BTW.... What did you learn from reading page A-3 in Tuedsday's (07/18/06) edition?
You will be playing with real dollars someday soon and you will need to have digested substantial information by then to help you make some critical decisions.... You'll pick up other valuable trading tools as you grow and learn. Remember being a student of the market is a lifelong learning process, you'll learn much about the market.... and much more about yourself in the process.

Hi Lye A-3, that’s my favorite section, that’s the first thing I read. Hey does it take you like two to three hours total to read the whole thing? Monday’s issues takes longer.
The IBD’s 10 secrets to success:
I learned to prepare for the worst case for the unexpected. Always keep think “what if’ this happen and “what if” this doesn’t happen, always think ahead and have a plan to execute! Before I ask the board question, I first try to answer them and if I can’t I would say. What would Lye and the others say and how would I go about replying to their replies. Basically always be ready for the unexpected and when it does come; you are prepared.
A Forgotten Founding Father:
John Winthrop stayed focus on his goals to develop a better life in the new world because there was no way for him to recover his loss and return home to England. He saw coming to a new world and serving as leader in a community has its privileges and being a leader also come with great responsibility. He was able to find a stock company that wasn’t governed by the crown where he was able to set up his governance. Basically he had a vision for a new society and devoted his energy toward building his vision.
Teller’s Search For The Unknown Changed History:
I think what he was saying that the element of doubt, doubt which keeps chasing for the truth or the unknown. He was influenced by his father’s friend, Keopold Kulg, who had passion and loves what he was going. Kulg enjoyed teaching and explaining to Teller. It was exactly what my grandfather told my brother, don’t be and EE for the money.
Do what you love and enjoy, the money will come late. I have always kept that in mind. May I add, to do not fear anything in life, tackle any obstacle by the horns…easy said then done?
Overall, from the article I learn always have a plan of action if thing does go right or wrong. Have a goal and keep at it and never give up.
Please feel free to add any thing that I left out, I’m sure I felt a lot out.

Could it be an intergalactic meeting in the Bulkans,
That has stole from us one of our favorite Vulcans?

DHB industries has made a nice run since being delisted on July 6th. The ticker for DHB is now DHBT.PK. DHBT has gone from a low of .50 to it's present price of $3.60. Today alone, DHBT made a gain of .57. I would consider these gains to be exceptional, considering the short time span of a couple weeks. This would have made a nice play for the POTW if the rules allowed it.
What will happen to DHBT.PK next? What is driving this broken stock? Will the Vulcans consider a future position in DHBT? A pullback is needed...more research must be done...questions must be answered.

My absence has served a very important function. Look for significant changes in the VTP in the near future. The stock market is in the intitial phases of a major paradigm shift. The market as we know it is changing before our very eyes...so must the VTP change. The Vulcans must take a step back and seperate themselves from the masses to understand the importance of it all.
If it is necessary for the Vulcans to step back and, as you put it, "separate themselves from the masses," then it would seem logical to enter a cash position, not unlike what IIC did this past week.
2 Golds in 3 weeks! Spike's on a roll, kids! Hey Spike, when you get on a roll like that, don't you get crumbs all over the chair and the floor?
The silver this week goes to Mr. Goober Peas! Having just been awarded the bronze last week, Goober is on a bit of a roll too. No, I think it's a biscuit. I think it's warm enough to melt the butter now, Mr. Peas.
And speakin' of Goober, his cousin Gomer Pyle was played by Jim Nabors. Quite a coincidence, since the bronze this week goes to Diogenes, who shorted Nabors Industries. Hmmm, smells pretty fishy don't it? Like maybe there's some insider trading going on in the back of Floyd's Barber Shop in Mayberry. It's been such a long and illogical week, I've got a mind to make like Otis Campbell and tilt a few back right about now.

Ski, you know it dude; close finish!
Bad luck Peanuts! You juuuuuuust ran out of helium on that skinny bullish performer :D Nice pick though. I think the symmetry on the daily was only the limiting factor.
Congrats Diogene! A fine short pick; large weekly SHS with a test of the neckline and a drop this week that could easily have taken 10% and the gold.
Special congrats to both New-born and RL too. New-born's head-to-head with Rob was interesting to watch play out. The strength of EBAY Mon Tues really wasn't surprising and I thought it was a gutsy move by New-born to short it on Monday. And if you hadn't of taken EBAY short this week dude I would have done it prior to earnings on Wednesday; seriously.
RL, nice pick! You chose a weekly 5th up and it worked well enough to stay nicely green on volume. BVX is in a monthly 3 up, so it may have more left, and any dip will be worth stalking for the 5th monthly in Nov or December I think.

Sticky,
My 20 year old son has already put $3000 in his Roth IRA and it's worth $3300. If he can keep contributing he'll be set for life and won't be too old to enjoy it. You've got a 5 year advantage on him. Keep studying this investment business . You'll never regret it.
-------------billyjoe
Hi BillyJoe
Wow that’s a lot of money your son saved up. Well I can’t really contribute any form of money until I get a work permit at 15 ½ or 16. But from now till then I have time to do research and plan. You say “If he can keep contributing he'll be set for life”, please explain in more deal? I understand a retirement has advantages and it is the time factor but are there risk of losing some or all of the savings?
My brother’s friend, Will is 36; an unemployed EE grad student. Will told my brother that he had started contributing $100 each month toward a Roth IRA for the past three years now. He said he wasn’t educated on the subject so he started late and can never play catch up. I don’t understand what he means by he can’t play catch up? He’s better late then never starting on, I think. His sum won’t be as great as the others that started when they were younger but he has to take into account how his investment also plays a big part that can make up for those lost years. NO?

Congrats to anyone that was in positive territory this difficult week
Rob, your wealth of information astounds me... goober = peanuts... I never knew that until your write-up.Sort of an arcane reference. I learned what goober peas were when I was about 5 years old. My mom had this Kingston Trio record, and one of the songs on it was "Goober Peas (http://www.civilwarpoetry.org/confederate/songs/gooberx.html)." I loved that song, but I didn't know what goober peas were until I asked my mom. The Kingston Trio was by far and away my favorite musical group until I was about 7. That's when the Beatles came to America, and until now no one has supplanted them as my favorites. I suspect no one ever will.
If any of you have never heard the Kingston Trio, do yourself a favor and find some of their old recordings in used record stores and flea markets (that's "swap meets" for those of you in Southern California). Listen to them. They were truly great but have practically vanished into anonymity.

---------billyjoeIt's all about fighting the forces of evil and keeping brokers honest dude :D Reg SHO (regulations governing shorts) was designed to, among other things, establish consistent "locate and delivery" rules so both "failures to deliver" and abusive “naked” short selling (not borrowing to short) could be prevented.
Which securities qualify to go on the SHO list?
At the conclusion of each settlement day, data for securities is examined for fails to deliver of 10,000 shares or more and if the level of fails is equal to or greater than 0.5% of the total shares outstanding for five consecutive days they go on the SHO list.

Not going to take GOOG short today. NEM short instead. Thanks.NewB, I think you made a wise switcheroo. But don't forget, Spike's still predicting EBAY to fill the gap to 15.87 on Nov. 13, 2002.
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5333/ebco2.gif (http://imageshack.us)
And unless I'm mistaken, he still believes that 70¢ MFLX gap from Nov. 2004, when it went from a high on the 8th of 12.85 to a low on the 9th of 13.55, will fill also. (It came within $1.22 of filling on May 5, 2005.)
While I have my doubts about either of these gaps filling, I'd say the likelihood of the latter is easily many times greater.
Question: in technical analysis, is there no "statute of limitations" on a gap-fill expectation? Don't the odds of a gap-fill occurring diminish in time until they eventually approach virtually zero probability?
thanks, man, do you see the brkout setup with FTD?

And it's Huge Pete with the TD! Weary businessmen and travellers seek a place to rest their weary bones. Interstate Hotels & Resorts will be more than happy to relieve them of a chunk of their cash in return for a place to crash. Great way to kick off the week, Pedro!
Biff Clemens, better known as that great American humorist, ParkTwain, suddenly reappears for the first time in 22 weeks here at the POTW, and would you believe he has the gall to rack up 5.44% right out of the chute? Old people and aging baby-boomers want their drugs, man, and they don't want to hear any excuses. Omnicell is there to make sure they get their fixes, how they want 'em, when they want 'em, for a fee of course.
But the AARP crowd isn't finished yet. Sometimes they need a little cuttin', cauterizin' and cosmetic surgery, along with the occasional hip replacement and such. Bovie Medical's got just the thing! Actually they have a whole raft of things designed for these kinds of needs and wants. Speed Racer knows that some of that AARP lobby money can put rocket fuel in his tank, so he punches one o' those buttons on the steering wheel of the Mach V and jumps the flaming ravine to land smack dab in third place with a 4.67% score! Hey Speed, Pops wants to know where you and Trixie disappeared to for three hours last night.

I believe that the driver this week behind OMCL is the news from late last week that there may be a new initiative coming out of Washington to reduce prescription errors in general, especially medication errors in hospitals. This plays right into OMCL's product line.
Here's the Associated Press story (via CNN), about the release of a new report from the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine that reports on the prevalence of prescription errors and the impact on patients of medication errors in hospitals.

"the committee recommends that by 2010 all prescribers and pharmacies be using e-prescriptions."

Lawd have mercy, Dmk done took us all to the wood shed! Would ya look at that 32.62%? And where she stops, nobody knows. Good night, Miss Agnes!
Ski's tearin' up the slopes pretty good himself with BVX layin' down another 4.53% of fresh powder today, on top o' that 4.67% base, for a total of 9.20%!
Huge Pete's hotel chain left him more than a mint on his pillow, adding another couple of percentage points! With all the extras, his bill now totals 8.11%!

Why don't you post a marked up chart showing why you think it stinks?Looks like it's got potential to reverse up for at least the 'c' corrective. 12.00 should resist hard. But that's +52% from current price, which offers great reward/risk ratio of 13 if you use a 4% risk stop under the head. If the pattern fails it will likely see $4.00 pretty quickly, so one wouldn't want to baghold this.
Good spotting Lye!

Not with real money... it's too thinly traded!!! :D :D (you know my real feelings on thinly traded stocks, however- I LOVE 'EM)
This will either be one of those "great call, dude" or, "I told ya so" kind of trades. I figure I've got a lot of catching up to do if I'm ever going to beat DMK, so I need to be more risky. I was also thinking of shorting NGA until 3:30 on Friday, but that seemed like there wouldn't be enough to catch DMK.
I did short NGA this morning from 8.26 to 8.03 for a quick day trade (missed the 7.9's though) with real money. I'm beginning to really like shorting stocks. I am finding that it is pretty easy to make money with short positions. I still don't have big balls to hold short positions for very long, however. All the short plays I do are day trades, and on stocks with which I am very familiar.

It is at risk of exhausting and it finishes weak today it may be the whisper of a weekly R shoulder. If/when the neck breaks I'd expect the gap around 20.00 to fill, and likely test of 16.00. It has to do some impressive bullish stuff to change my bearish bias on it.

Da Mighty Kong has scaled the Empire State Building yet again! And he's swattin' down airplanes left and right as though they're made of Styrofoam! 38.57% is King Kong size, no matter how you try to monkey around with the figures!

I'm lookin' at it after hours right now, and darned if it ain't down 28% to $17.55! Yeeouch!
I think I'm going to invent a new trading strategy: it's really simple ... do nothing but short stocks near the end of the session just prior to their earnings reports. Never long! Just short only! I might lose 7% here and 10% there once in a while, but look at how much greater the odds are of picking up 10, 15, 20% a lot more frequently! I don't know if I'm the first one to ever think that up, but if I am, then I'll have to give it a name ... let's see ... how about ... Rob,
It drops $8.22 in the after hours on what was a terrible earnings report. I can't see what could possibly generate any interest to the upside, but stranger things have happened. Low volume stocks. It doesn't take much volume to swing them either way but I always felt that they fall much faster than they go up. This qtr. 06 vs same qtr. 05 was a comparible disaster. If it were my play I would let it drift a little higher an if it does I would short it. That's a bear flag formation happening and very similar to UFPI on Runner's thread. Wonder what it will open at tomorrow?

Rob,
There are a couple of ways that I'm looking at this one. Here is a chart of the daily with a EW count. I think that the 5 still has a bit to go to about $9.50/10 area. I think it will hit that before a pullback. Also good news today that their newest little dodad, a process to remove sutures, has been approved by the FDA and that they are going to bring it out to market this September.
http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/9759/bvxzo7.png (http://imageshack.us)
The 2nd chart is of the weekly. I'm seeing the wave count as near the top of a 3. In this case the chances of a pullback, or a 4th wave down, is very good and could happen tomorrow or the next day. I like the strength of the FDA approval on that suture to drive it to the $10 range before it pulls back but I'm up pretty good with the trade from my entry at this time an I'll probably place a stop somewhere around $8.50 in the morning to protect the gains to date. I think it stands a great chance to go to $12/15 before it's done with this uptrend. I would exit or get stopped out at $8.50 and re-enter after the pullback happens. Isn't that weekly a beautiful chart. If you look close between Feb. 05 and Nov. 05 it made a nice base and handle and took it's time building momentum before breaking out. I've been in an out twice from $3.50 range for short swing trades. From this point I would wait for the 4th wave down before thinking about any entry. If that takes it back down to around $7 / 7.50 range that would be a nice entry again.

This may go down in history as the single most stupid thing I have ever written.... ALDA down 40+% today!!!! So much for catching DMK.
I day traded ALDA this morning. I watched it closely, and on the first tick up, I bought market order 500 shares- got them at 15.14, and sold at the first tick down at 16.06... about 3 minutes, $460... that was even more fun than my NGA short yesterday... but now I have 2/5 round trips... 3 more and my account is frozen for a while.

ALDA has a nice gap @ $6 that might fill in due time....
Rob, I've seen stocks with a P/E of 2 crash.... and crash.... and crash. In 1997 I traded a company called National Steel (ticker symbol at the time was NS) It had a P/E of around 4. I bought it and held it till it's P/E was around 2.... and I finally sold it for a huge loss.... After I sold, NS kept crashing.... and then it reported some really screwed up numbers and the P/E all of a sudden was about 50!.... It was bought out eventually for about 10% of the price where I first bought it....
Once a stock is out of favor and the big boys dump, it's mighty hard for it to come back fast.... and most likely the "dump" is telling you there are troubles under the surface that "we" can't see just yet.
btw.... ALDA hit it's 61.8% retracement and stopped pronto.... Here's a chart of ALDA showing how Fibonacci Retracements are a reliable indicator to target a stop point when a stock takes such a tumble as ALDA has.

Great Job dmk!!!
As far as pulling off the Silver myself...it is small consolation for how much real money I've let go down the drain on WITS...But I can't say I wasn't warned numerous times by my wife, my trading partner and Spike...Heck, even Stenz has been bashing it since May over at Yahoo...But I'm trying to imitate Ernie...except my sell point is +100%...Hope I don't die before I get it...However, all was not lost...I made over a buck on HITT today on a dt and ABAX was up almost 9%...heck...even ICOC was +2%...I did lose some pocket change trying to be cute with RACK...but no harm...IIC aka ICE

Hey Rob, ole buddy, could you help me with something? Have you kept all the data on POTW since you began as POTW admin? My recollection is that since you started keeping the data (and maybe also including the POTW data that you "inherited"), I haven't had a negative week for any week when I actually made a pick. Could you check that out for me? :)

DMK, that was a great win! I'll stick with VOL, as long as it is on my screen.
After I had done all the catching up, it appears that my Mechanical Fund, the POTW (all active players), and the POTW+ (the current 13wk top ten) are still dividing the points squarely and fairly. The POTW scored 19 points, the other two both 18 points. More details in my Mechanical Fund thread.

Heck...I wouldn't do that when it's 65 degrees with 20% humidity. I live in a townhouse and I pay a gardener to come by once a week to to mow the park strip...However, I do take care of my flower garden.
But I will tell 'ya...For those with a lot of water weight...it would be good exercise...My body fat is only 14.7% last time I had it checked.
Anyway...Here is the Heat Index def. from weather.com:
The heat index is the calculation of temperature that takes into consideration the effects of humidity and temperature on the human body. The heat index gives an indication of how the combination of temperature and humidity feels to humans.

Hey DEF.... Ever think of buying a goat? You could buy a decent nanny for about $175.... Then sell the milk to some of those pinko tree huggers out there (probably some of your neighbors).... With your savings on mowing and the milk sales (and cheese if you were inclined) you could justify the purchase and break even the first month. http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/images/icons/icon14.gif

I've tried to own most of my picks but since a couple of months ago I have decided to own them if I was going to play them in the POTW. I have had to bail in the real account on a couple of occassions where I let them ride in the game which really isn't fair to the overall game average. So I've decided to play it the way I trade from this point forward.

LOL...Ya know...even though I live in congested West LA...there was some people in a house about a mile from me who had 2 goats in their front yard up until about 1990...Then they sold out and Condos went up...but even back then i thought that was rather strange for this neighborhhood...Doug

PS: however there are some big places/lots in the Hills of B.H. I was at Baron Hilton's place in Holmby Hills about 10 years ago...48 rooms...What a spread...Whoa!!!...I swear...I've seen his backyard in some movies.
PSS: I wasn't an invited guest...and I didn't see him...I went with one of my friends who is a custom upholsterer...We were there to look at some chairs he wanted re-done
In my finish carpentry days, I worked in a lot of places like that. I believe I worked in 4 huge mansions in Holmby Hills, just a stone's throw from the UCLA campus and a couple right near the Playboy mansion. Those places are unreal.

I gotta an idea...I'm pretty sure we could get a nice one for about $20mil...So 52 of us get together and each put up 385 grand...Like a timeshare deal...We each get 1 week a year...Since I live close by I'll handle the maintenance on a cost-plus sorta deal. I figure 10% is fair...OK...So Rob's in...Lye probably...Ski wouldn't miss it...Ernie-How can he refuse?...Louetta...well somebody has to yell at me if there is a leaky pipe...Jack probably likes to jet down to the REAL California once in a while...Web's probably needs a break from the BIG House...Billy might like to impress his Heartland friends...Peanuts would probably be amazed at how the Westside lives(At least in my neighborhood)...Dave could invite his Casino Hostess over for the weekend...Then maybe he'd have the clout to get me comped at that exclusive part of the MGM...What is the name???...Oh yeah...THE MANSION...Who else wants in???

Doug,
The proverbial check is in the mail.

VOL is a very good pick for this week. Congrats. But, I wouldn't count my chickens before my eggs hatch- You never know what IIC might have up his sleeve, and I will be looking for a place to sell ONNN and pick up a few more percentage points with another stock before the end of the day. Good luck!
Sell KNOT...go to cash for now...IIC

Well, you ought to say, "NBB, YOU ARE A HHUUUUGGGGGEEE MISTAKE!"
Congrats to all those above me in the contest :D

Nice job Karel, Mickey, and Diogenes. Actually was a pretty good week overall with a low number of players on the negative side and low % losses except for NBB.

Bad acid. Must have been hallucinating. Thought for sure I posted BVX long earlier. You're right. I can't find it. Maybe I posted it on another thread somewhere yesterday. Now I have to go back and look.

Ski:
Don't think you ever formally selected BVX. In a disucssion we were having, you suggested that you probably would go with BVX long.
Why the change? BVX still looks good to me. Have you seen something that caused you to change directions?
