Rockin' Rob,

The grunge music scene blasted out of Seattle a few years ago to dominate the music world for several years. Is "Bean Stocks" on it's way to a repeat in the investment field?

The grunge music scene blasted out of Seattle a few years ago to dominate the music world for several years. Is "Bean Stocks" on it's way to a repeat in the investment field?I certainly hope not, for Jack's sake. If you remember, that Cobain dude wound up blowing his brains out with a shotgun. Seatle's greatest contribution to music is, without a shadow of a doubt, Jimi Hendrix, though tragically he died young too.

Bean Stocks' EONC pick turned out to be a stellar performer for sure. Those two-dollar stocks can pay off handsomly if they don't bust you. They're a wild ride. Diogenes' AFOP was up 10.17% at Monday's close and as of today, it's back to 1.69%. It's like the financial equivalent of riding a mechanical bull--or a real one.

Neil Young Biography

The Godfather of Grunge

By Dave Zimmer

Neil Young News (http://www.thrasherswheat.org/wheatfield.html)

Release "Time Fades Away" (http://thrasherswheat.org/tnfy/tfa-petition.php)

http://www.thrasherswheat.org/portrait.jpgNeil Young
Neil Young was born November 12, 1945 in Toronto, Ontario to Rassy
and Scott Young. As a youth, he survived diabetes, polio, epilepsy and the
divorce of his parents. His father was a highly respected sportswriter for
The Toronto Sun and has authored several books, including Neil & Me,
a 1984 title covering his relationship with his musician son.

In 1960, Neil moved with his mother to Winnipeg,
Manitoba. It was there that music first became the
driving force in his life. After switching from
ukulele to guitar, he was in a succession of Winnipeg-
based bands, including The Jades, The Esquires, The
Classics and Neil Young & The Squires. Initially an
instrumental band in the mold of The Shadows, The
Squires eventually became more of a folk-rock group.
Several early Neil originals from this era, including
"Ain't It The Truth" and "Find Another Shoulder,"
would be resurrected years later with the Bluenotes.
From early 1963 to mid- 1965, The Squires performed
regularly at clubs and dance halls in Manitoba and
Ontario.

At a club in Fort William, Ontario in '65, The Squires
crossed paths with an American folk-rock band called
The Company, which featured a singer/guitarist named
Stephen Stills. Young and Stills became fast friends
but soon lost track of one another as The Squires
disbanded in the summer of '65.

</B>

http://www.thrasherswheat.org/nysitting.gifNeil Hangin Neil Young recorded an acoustic demo for Elektra Records in
New York in 1965 featuring early versions of "Sugar
Mountain" and "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," but
he was not offered a contract by the label. Returning
to Toronto, Young played the same Yorkville district
coffeehouse circuit as fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell
before he joined The Mynah Birds, a Toronto-based band
led by singer Ricky James Matthews (later to be known
as Rick James and singer of such dance hits as "Super
Freak"). The Mynah Birds recorded several songs for
Motown Records in Detroit that were never released.
During one of these recording sessions, James was
arrested and charged with deserting the U.S. Navy. The
Mynah Birds flew apart when James was forced to
complete his tour of duty.

In search of fresh opportunities, Young and ex-Mynah
Birds bassist Bruce Palmer packed most of their
worldly possessions into Young's car (a black hearse!)
and drove from Toronto to Los Angeles. On Sunset
Boulevard in Hollywood, the hearse was spotted in
traffic by Stills and singer/guitarist Richie Furay
(who previously met Young in New York and had come
West a short time earlier.) The four musicians huddled
in a supermarket parking lot and immediately talked of
forming a band. With the addition of drummer Dewey
Martin, the Buffalo Springfield was born. Fusing folk
and rock with dashes of country and R&B, the
Springfield gained immediate raves sharing bills with
The Byrds at The Whisky on the Sunset Strip. Live,
Young unleashed his stinging lead guitar and high
vocal cries. On the band's subsequent three albums,
Young's songwriting excellence was evident on such
songs as "Mr. Soul," "Broken Arrow," "Expecting to
Fly" and "I Am a Child."

http://www.thrasherswheat.org/gifs/farmaid00.jpgNeil Young at Farm Aid 2000 Neil Young quit the Buffalo Springfield in the spring of
'67, before the band's appearance at The Monterey Pop
Festival in June, then re-joined later that year. The
Buffalo Springfield broke up for good in May of 1968.
With no small amount of original material to work
with, Young, now living in Topanga Canyon, launched
his solo career in earnest. His self-titled debut
album was released on Reprise Records in January of
1969, and featured such songs as "The Loner" and "The
Last Trip to Tulsa." He would later refer to Neil
Young as "overdub city." Indeed, most of his recorded
work to follow would bear little resemblance to the
layered process used on much of his first album.

Early in '69, Young got re-acquainted with a rough-
hewn Los Angeles-based band he'd first encountered
during the early days of the Buffalo Springfield.
Called The Rockets, the group featured
guitarist/vocalist Danny Whitten, bassist Billy Talbot
and drummer Ralph Molina. In a matter of weeks, Young
and these musicians would record "Down By the River"
and then, transformed into Neil Young & Crazy Horse,
would go on to cut more songs with visceral immediacy,
including "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl In The Sand,"
for the album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,
released in July.

Though enjoying success as a solo artist, Young agreed
to join forces with Crosby, Stills & Nash in the
summer of '69. He added dark grain to CSN's front
porch harmony. Following an appearance at Woodstock,
the riotously-received "Carry On Tour" and the early
1970 release of the album Deja Vu, Crosby, Stills,
Nash & Young were often referred to as "The American
Beatles." This level of fame, however, did not deter
Young from his commitment to pursuing his solo career.

http://www.thrasherswheat.org/gifs/neil_hands_avc.jpgNeil Young recorded After the Gold Rush with contributions
from Crazy Horse, Stephen Stills and several other
musicians. The 1970 album included poetic acoustic
songs like "Tell Me Why" and "Birds" and unbridled
rockers such as "Southern Man" and "When You Dance I
Can Really Love." After the Gold Rush exhibited the
full range of Young's formidable musical talents
during this phase of his career.

In the spring of 1970, Neil Young wrote "Ohio" in the wake
of the Kent State killings and CSNY recorded it as a
single. And while CSNY succeeded in achieving several
moments of musical magic on stage - some of which were
captured on the aptly titled 4-Way Street live album -
the group splintered in July.

Young's solo career kept right on rolling. A good
portion of the new material he performed on a '70 -
'71 acoustic tour was inspired by his recently
purchased Northern California ranch. Songs such as
"Old Man" and "Heart of Gold" would eventually be
recorded by Young and a band he dubbed the Stray
Gators (featuring bassist Tim Drummond, steel
guitarist Ben Keith and drummer Kenny Buttrey). James
Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and the London Symphony
Orchestra also made guest appearances on Harvest,
which was released in early 1972 and remains Young's
best-selling album, featuring the only Number 1 single
of his career, "Heart of Gold."

Young also completed his first film, Journey Through
the Past, in '72. A soundtrack album, released in
November, preceded the film's '73 release.

The drug overdose death of former Crazy Horse
guitarist Danny Whitten happened right before Young
began a post-Harvest tour. Fans expecting "Heart of
Gold" instead heard sets dominated by a passel of new
reckless rockers. Time Fades Away, a live album
released in September of '73, captured Young's edgy
emotions.

Crosby & Nash made guest appearances on the last leg
of the Time Fades Away tour, while Young had dropped
in on several early '70s Crosby & Nash shows (as well
as recording a single with Nash called "War Song") and
a couple of '73 Stills/Manassas gigs. But CSNY did not
re-group for any extended period until the 1974 summer
stadium tour. Several of the new songs Young performed
at these shows were released on his '74 solo album, On
the Beach. Despite cutting several new tracks in the
mid '70s, CSNY only managed to release a greatest hits
album called So Far during this period.

Young could have released three albums in 1975.
However, he shelved one of them, a collection of
introspective songs called Homegrown, in favor of a
dark, ragged song cycle called Tonight's the Night.
Most of the songs on the album, influenced by the
drug-related deaths of Danny Whitten and CSNY roadie
Bruce Berry, were recorded in '73 with a band that
included Talbot, Molina and Nils Lofgren.

A new version of Crazy Horse, featuring new
guitarist/singer Frank "Poncho" Sampedro, recorded a
powerful, often jagged-edged album called Zuma in
'75. It was released in the fall of that year and
featured such songs as "Cortez the Killer" and "Danger
Bird."

Crazy Horse would contribute to several other Young
projects during the rest of the '70s, including the
'77 album American Stars 'n' Bars ("Like A Hurricane"
soared next to songs that featured Linda Ronstadt and
Nicolette Larson) and '78's Comes A Time (Two songs
that showed the quieter side of the Horse fit well
amidst a set of harmony-filled numbers recorded with
Nicolette Larson and The Gone With the Wind
Orchestra). Then there were the transcendent NY&CH
live shows in America and Japan in '76 and the tour de
force concerts in late '78. On stage, Young
accentuated the feeling that he was "dwarfed" by the
music industry by using oversized amp covers and a
gigantic microphone - all documented on the 1979 Rust
Never Sleeps album and film, and the Live Rust album
released later that same year.

In addition to working with Crazy Horse, Neil Young also
formed the short-lived Stills-Young Band with Stephen
Stills, resulting in one album, Long May You Run, and
one aborted tour - both in 1976. Later that year
Young was one of the all-star performers at The Band's
last "Last Waltz" concert at Winterland in San
Francisco.

Other Young highlights in the 1970s included his
tenure with The Ducks, a Santa Cruz, CA band led by an
old Springfield-era friend of Young's, singer Jeff
Blackburn. Young performed numerous raucous sets of
"country roll" with The Ducks during the latter part
of the summer of '77 at small bars around the coastal
town. In the spring of '78, Young played and recorded
five straight nights of solo acoustic music at a cozy
150-seat club in San Francisco called The Boarding
House. The first side of Rust Never Sleeps was drawn
from these shows. Is it any wonder both Rolling Stone
and The Village Voice named Young "Artist of the
Decade" in their reviews of the '70s?

Rock's most intriguing chameleon revealed an even
broader spectrum of musical colors in the 1980s. He
forcefully ricocheted between many different genres,
performing and recording with an ever-revolving (often
recurring) collection of old and new musician friends.

Young swung hard into country music on parts of 1980's
Hawks & Doves and again throughout 1985's Old Ways
(featuring guests Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings).
Adopting a perceptible twang in his voice, he toured
extensively in the mid '80s with The International
Harvesters (including Tim Drummond, Ben Keith, singer
Anthony Crawford and fiddler Rufus Thibodeaux).

Inspired by European groups such as Kraftwerk, Young
experimented with computers and synthesized vocals on
1982's Trans album and subsequent tours in '82 and
'83.

Techno evolved into retro when Young and The Shocking
Pinks (featuring Drummond, Keith and drummer Karl
Himmel) rattled and rolled on stage and recorded the
1983 album Everybody's Rockin', featuring '50s-style
Young originals alongside covers of such vintage
classics as "Mystery Train" and "Betty Lou's Got A New
Pair of Shoes."

Young plugged back into modern technology on 1986's
Landing On Water, a jittery collection of songs co-
produced by Danny Kortchmar, who also contributed
guitar, synthesizer and vocals to the recording.

And what would a decade be without Crazy Horse and
CSN&Y? Young saddled up with Frank, Billy and Ralph
for 1981's rampaging Re*ac*tor (featuring the
stuttering "Rapid Transit" and war-like "Shots"),
1986's bruising "In A Rusted-Out Garage" Tour and the
1987 album, Life, featuring "Inca Queen" and
"Prisoners of Rock and Roll." Next, Young fulfilled a
promise to David Crosby that he'd work with CSNY again
if his old partner ever licked his severe drug
addiction. The 1988 CSNY album, American Dream,
included such Young songs as the title track, "Name of
Love" and "This Old House."

Though elements of the blues had been present in many
of Young's songs over the years, the style didn't take
center stage in his music until the 1988 album, This
Note's For You, and during corresponding live shows,
featuring Neil Young & the Bluenotes (later
incarnations of which were to be billed as The
Restless and The Lost Dogs). The video for the song
"This Note's For You," a pointed swipe at corporate
sponsorship, was banned for a time by MTV, then,
ironically, voted "Video of the Year" at the 1988 MTV
Music Video Awards.

A special late fall tradition began in 1986 with the
presentation of the first Bridge School Benefit at the
Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA. Hosted by
Young and his wife, Pegi, the now annual and largely
acoustic concerts benefit a special school where
children (such as Neil's youngest son) afflicted with
severe cerebral palsy are taught how to communicate
with computers and other technology. Bruce
Springsteen, Simon & Garfunkel, Don Henley and Willie
Nelson are among the artists who have appeared at this
continuing event.

Young's forays into the film world also continued in
the '80s with the 1982 release of his surreal "nuclear
comedy" Human Highway, starring Dennis Hopper, Sally
Kirkland, Dean Stockwell, Devo and himself. Young also
had parts in the films '68, Made In Heaven and Love At
Large (the latter actually released in early '90).
The end of the '80s found Young issuing stark electric
statements, first on a Neil Young & The Restless five-
song EP called Eldorado (initially released in limited
quantities in Australia), then on Freedom, a riveting
album which shared several songs and players with
Eldorado and was framed by acoustic and electric
versions of "Rockin In The Free World" (http://www.thrasherswheat.org/fot/ritfw.htm). A blistering
live take of "Free World" on Saturday Night Live in
September of '89 served notice to all that Young was
still very much a vital rock and roll artist. He
reinforced this fact on the road in '89, performing
mostly solo with occasional subtle backing from Ben
Keith and Frank Sampedro.

Crazy Horse galloped back onto the scene in 1990,
recording the album Ragged Glory with Young and
hitching up for numerous searing live shows on the
"Don't Spook The Horse" Tour. Some of the best moments
were chronicled on 1991's live double-CD Weld. A third
CD, Arc, was an electric guitar "sound sculpture"
comprised of extended, feedback-laden instrumental
outros and sundry other live fragments. Alternative
bands such as Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, and Dinosaur
Jr opened many of the "Spook the Horse" shows and
legions of Generation X fans began referring to Young
as "The Godfather of Grunge."

In 1992, Young returned to his warm, acoustic side
with the release of Harvest Moon, featuring most of
the same core players (The Stray Gators) and singers
(Ronstadt and Taylor) he used on Harvest over 20 years
earlier. Young's half-sister, Astrid, and Nicolette
Larson also appeared on this record as well as on
Unplugged, a CD and video gleaned from Young's
February '93 "MTV Unplugged" performance.

In typical fashion, Young shifted musical gears once
again in 1993 and teamed up with Booker T. & the M.G.s
for a series of soulful live shows that included new
arrangements of many familiar Young classics as well
as covers of such songs as Otis Redding's "Dock Of The
Bay" and Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" (the
latter of which Young had performed with feverish
abandon at the Tribute To Bob Dylan concert at Madison
Square Garden in October of '92).

At the personal request of director Jonathan Demme,
Young wrote the title track for the 1993 film,
Philadelphia. The emotion-filled song was nominated
for an Academy Award and Young performed it live at
the 66th Academy Awards ceremony.

With the 1994 album Sleeps With Angels, Young & Crazy
Horse further extend the realm of their sonic library
and are letting the challenging new music speak for
itself.

Good one Rob.... I like the "bean stalk".... I always use a laptop.

Hey dude, have you heard about the forest fire on the BlueRidge right behind WW Boxley (started Saturday)? Originated near Villamont and goes on into Montvale.... it has burned over 3k acres now! The entire side of the mountain, all the way up to the parkway is charred.... The dude who dumped his woodstove ashes near the woods behind his house is in deep do-do.lol....I saw on the news last evening that they'll fine him $100k-$200k for the cost of fighting the fire.... The "US Forestery Service" has a helicopter dumping water (from the "Peaks of Otter" lake) on it....

I took some (tripod) pictures Monday night from a hilltop pasture (on my farm) of the fire. As I had the shudder open (manually) on my 35mm this HUGE flame shot up about 150 ft (estimate) I got it on film. I guess a big ol dead pine or hemlock caught fire and made that flare up. The fire is about eight miles from my farm (as the crow flies) Fortunately the wind has kept the smoke out of our valley, for the most part. I was in Troutville Monday and it was all smokey all the way over there.... I'll post the pics when I develop the roll.

Hey dude, have you heard about the forest fire on the BlueRidge . . . ? . . . it has burned over 3k acres now!Yeah, I first heard of it a couple days ago. When they said something about it being in or near the Montvale area, my first thought was: I wonder if it's anywhere near [Lyehopper's] place. My second thought was: Wow, if it hits those Montavale oil tanks, that'll be huge! I'll be looking forward to your pictures.

I must add that having lived in California for many years, I guess I got so jaded by the size of the fires out there that a 3,000-acre fire sounds small by comparison. Obviously it's not small, and particularly when it's close to one's own property! But check this out: In October 2003 there was a wildfire in San Diego County called the "Cedar Fire" that burned over 280,000 acres (about 438 sq. mi.)! That's almost 1/3 the size of the state of Rhode Island! Lawd, that's huge!

NASA has an interesting page (http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/research/lifeonearth/lifeonearth-ER2.html) with pics of wildfires from space.

Having read in the "Good causes" thread Lyehopper's heroic efforts at trying to get $$$Mr. Market$$$ to join the POTW contest, and remembering that last week WIRE was up 10.8% from Monday's open to Friday's close, I thought: it would be fun to have Ernie jump in the fray. But alas, it appears that it is not to be.

Enter Quasi-Ernie. Quasi-Ernie is the group's "imaginary friend" for lack of a better term. He is the next best thing to having his hugeness himself throwin' down on the POTW. Quasi-Ernie chooses to communicate only with whomever is attending to the scorekeeping duties at any given time, and therefore his picks will be entered by that person. That would be me for now, even though I am not the scorekeeper! I am only doing this to give Lyehopper a bit of a respite. And in Quasi-Ernie's case I have decided to relax the rules just a bit and let him get into this week's competition late by entering his Monday 12:06 pm pick of MFLX long at 60.22. Quasi-Ernie is only allowed to enter long picks, and they can only be stocks that the real Ernie buys. If the real Ernie sells XYZ, then so does Quasi-Ernie.

Quasi-Ernie, you will see your scores posted on the next end-of-day score post. Please remember, Q-E, that you are just experimental and may be removed from the contest at any time at the whim of whomever is keeping score. You got that? Other than that, welcome to the POTW, Q-E. More power to you.

LOL.... I think Ernies fans would love to see "Real Ernie" participate too Rob. It's a shame $$MM$$ didn't think of your idea first.... On the Aussie stock forum, the owner of the forum actually runs their contest. They have 38 palyers in the current contest.... The funny thing about Quasie-Ernie playing the POTW (win, lose or draw) is this.... "Real Ernie" will never know about it because he won't bother to read this thread.

You know Rockin'Rob? This contest ain't so much about winning or losing to me.... I just like to play and see what other members are playing..... btw my data shows that this is the fastest growing thread on the forum and certainly a great place for the active members to get to know one another. It's nice to see what stocks the other members favor.

HERE's THE DEAL.... From following this thread one can learn that I trade GEHL, ECOL and PARL and short ESLR.... that you like IMCL and GOOG.... that Karel Likes CMCO and CELL.... that Jiesen likes AMLN.... Webs trades TIII.... IIC trades NUAN.... that "Bean stock's" EONC is hot this week... that Spikefader shorted ECR this week.... Look at the great picks Pete, Gator, Ski, Gary, Ray, BillyJoe, Photon, NBB, Scifos, Thom and Mimo bring to the table weekly.... etc,etc,etc.... AND how about the new fellas with their HUUUUGE picks recently?.... It's a great consolidated place to see what stocks each player is hot on in any particular week. I think very few players just pick a stock out of their a$$ "willy nilly" as Ernie suggests. I honestly think this thread helps keep the forum healthy and is a great resource for HUUUGE trading ideas. Too bad "everyone" can't see the value and contribute to the team effort that makes this thread a success.

btw.... I'd like to THANK all $$MM$$ members who "bother" the participate in this POTW contest weekly, I hope you gain as much from it it as I do.... AND.... I'd again like to thank BillyJoe for starting the thread and you ESPECIALLY [Rockin'Rob] for your hard work in making this such a great thread. You my friend are HUUUUGE!!!!

Rob,
Excellent! Notice on the right side of the screen. At the top it is dated 1976, at the bottom 1973 I'm thinking it's '73. Brings back memories before they were really big listening to "Meddle" and "Atom Heart Mother" in college. A buddy at Toledo University told me of a campus concert, costing a couple bucks per student. He said weird sounds were traveling up and down the aisles freaking people out. This was in the very early 70's. I regret having never seen them live.

The only question I have is: Is Diogenes a fop? Or isn't he a fop? My guess is no, but look at that AFOP pick gather a head o' steam again. So far AFOP is not A FLOP, is it?

Lye rolled up a snuggly 6.76% with a quickie short on Evergreen Solar :) (ESLR) and then a quickie long on PARL. He surely seemed to know right when to bail on it though, didn't he? (Now I'm hoping to capitalize on the bounce.)

Alice, Jim Smith, Spock, and Dougie are comin' on strong with over 5% each, so you can't exactly count them out yet either!

There's plenty of excitement yet ahead, so y'all come on back for the final round of this week's slugfest tomorrow! Same BAT time! Same BAT channel!

I think it was just "The Wall" dude. I once had about all Pink Floyd's albums including one from the late 60's called "A Nice Pair".... anyone remember that one? I'm not sure what happened to all my albums? probably the same thing that happened to all my concert t-shirts.lol

Brings back memories before they were really big listening to "Meddle" and "Atom Heart Mother" in college.Right on, BillyJoe! I remember when I first heard Pink Floyd. I was in Jr. High School in San Jose, CA. I don't think Meddle had been released yet. A buddy of mine had Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. We used to listen to those on his older brother's stereo as loudly as our juvenile ear drums could tolerate whilst in chemically-induced states of altered consciousness. When Meddle came out, well I thought it was about the most magnificent musical opus I'd ever heard. Prior to that, I had been wearing out my copy of Paranoid by Black Sabbath, along with Abbey Road and Let It Be by the Beatles, everything Hendrix ever did, and Freak Out by the Mothers of Invention, among others. They just don't make music like that any more. From the mid '70s on, not much new really turned my head (with the possible exception of Men At Work) until 1993 when this little San Francisco chick band called 4 Non Blondes came outta nowhere with an album called "Bigger! Better! Faster! More! (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&fkr=1&from=R8&satitle=bigger%21+better%21+faster%21+more%21&category0=)" That album is solid freakin' gold in my book. Well, I don't want to get started on how brilliant Linda Perry is because it'll be too hard to stop. Okay ... that's my little musical treatise for the evening. Rock on POTW-ers!

Fellas, I might not be around in time to make my pick for next week, so Rob, if you could & would, let it ride on BLKB for another week.

Stooge quiz:
In 'Dizzy Detectives', Curly didn't have a gun. What was his excuse?

a) "Last week I blew my brains out, and I decided not to take a chance on anything serious happening!"
b) "The landlord's baby was crying so I gave it to the baby to play with."
c)"The real Stooges are all in the NRA."
d) " I ain't a member of the "Pis-till" club!"

Gary611,
At Bowling Green University in Ohio, 1972, the campus radio station called Moe and interviewed him on air. The only thing I remember is he was mad at the Beatles for stealing his haircut, and he seemed serious about it. I think both Moe and Larry passed away within months of each other in '75. Too bad they never could find a decent replacement for Curly , but Shemp did a good job when he was with the others.

SPIKEFADER has done it again folks! He beat all of us quite handily by finding an awesome short play that enabled him to bag an incredible 17.27%!!!!!!!

A little something about ECC Capital Corp. (ECR): This company was founded in 2004, and it paid its CEO $4.01 million and its "Co CEO," Shabi Asghar, $4.97 million last year, not to mention the $0.996 million it paid its COO? Ya gotta love a company that pays a guy named Shabi five million bucks a year. (Not too shabby ... for Shabi that is.) After having earlier this year laid off 440 employees (27% of its workforce), in a press release on Feb. 27, ECC Capital announced the cancellation of its dividend payment. Shabi explained: "Given . . . the operating losses in our mortgage banking segment, we plan to retain capital . . . [blah, blah, blah] . . . and for the prudent operation of our business." Shabi added: "As a management team we are focused on improving the company's operating results and restoring our mortgage banking operations to profitability."
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/3296/ecrchart0ow.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
Translation: "It looks like we may be going down in flames, and we have to hang on to as much cash as possible so that there will be something left in the kitty to raid when our loyal stockholders become our royal bag holders." Excellent short, Spikefader!!!!!!

BEAN STOCKS!!! You ain't-a-gonna be eatin' beans tonight, dude!!!! Not with a 12½% gain this week!!!! Holy cow! I'm dazed and confused! I'm delerious and bumfuzzled! EONC was a downright solid gold winner of a pick!!!! (Well, silver anyway this week, thanks to that durned Spikefader! heh heh) And you know what word you can make by rearranging the letters of EONC? ... That's right! CONE!!!
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/144/coneheads28xb.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
And you made the rest of us ('cept for Spike) look like a bunch of CONE-HEADS this week! Okay, so you made your point this week!!! (Point, get it?) See ya in the next round!

ALICE!!!! Is that you gettin' advice from your brokers?
http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/803/atd1fs.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
I'm not sure they look too reliable! But they sure didn't give you a bum steer this week!!!! I'm not sure, but that one on the left looks like he checkin' you out, know what I mean? LOL!!! HUGE play this week, dude!!! That TWTC 1-yr. chart sure looks awfully sweet for a company that's spent more dough than they've made over the last year! But hey! No one can deny it's been a great one, eh? You're comin' back for more next week, right? Well alright then! It's a promise!

And check out Lye and James ... with their gains of over 6½% this week!!! How awesome is that???? Imagine making that kind o' gain in a week's time and not even winning the bronze medal! That's ... that's ... that's ... c'mon, you know what it is ... that's HUUUUUGE!!!!

Webs and Doug also both turned in spectacular performances with their showings of more than 4½% this week!!! Okay, Webs ... if you keep it up like this, it will speak well for the VTP! Let's see that new paradigm, dude! And Mel ... I mean, Doug! You are proving to be a formidable opponent, dude! I don't know what system you use, but whatever it is it's working! High fives!

Well thanks to that little tip I received yesterday, I wound up fairly well in the green also! Gee, I'm wondering if you all can figure out the identity of the "little birdie." heh heh

Congrats to all the players for a well-fought battle! Some of you got your noses bloodied this week, but hey! We all know the feeling, I guarantee it! Just come out sluggin' again next week and chances are you'll do better!

What they haven't realized, though, is that we have a huge reserve of oil after we deplete their resources...jejejeI know, I have been there. Wonderful time we had. We noticed it right at the start, when we arrived at Chicago O'Hare. My sister and brother in law (who lived in the US for a couple of years) came to pick us up, a 2.5 hour ride both ways, from Menomonee Falls (Milwaukee). It is lucky my wife did (and does) have a drivers licence, and didn't mind to do the driving, as long as ... <sound of heavy bargaining>

I plan to be in Paris in last week of April. Webs throw me some tips where to go and stay there. I have never been there.

Ok here is a few good tips...

1. Don't stereotype the French. They are not all snooty and hate Americans. If you go to Paris, just remember that you are in a big city where people tend to be a little less friendly. It's just like going to a big city in the U.S.

2. Also, try to speak a little French to them. Always say "bonjour" when you enter a business. It's customary to do this and they will tend to be nicer to you if you make an attempt at it. Also, always be sure to say "merci", which means thank you.

3. Here's a great place to learn some French words and phrases.
http://www.bonjour.com/

4. Remember that you are in their country. Respect their customs.

5. Watch out for pick pockets on the metro or in crowds. Be aware of this at all times. Fortunately, that's about all the crime they have. It's a very safe city.

6. Venture out into the country. Poeple are always much friendlier there and love to talk to Americans.

7. Don't let the gypsy kids under the Eiffel Tower talk you into giving them money. They'll never leave you alone if you do. I always act like I don't speak English or French when they approach me...it works...lol

8. Study the Metro map. It's easy, once you figure it out.

9. Go to the Latin Quarter, while in Paris and try a Gyro at my favorite Gyro shop... Maison De Gyro

Sorry Spike, but picking stocks under $10 or $15 doesn't cut it for me.....I doubt you could really trade this stock and make the gain reported......Now, my AAPL short was good for 6.65% but more importantantly, it was good for 4+ points and is highly liquid....
And, after nailing aapl long, mentioned aapl short as the play.....making money coming and going.

Lyehopper has told me, since I have temporarily assumed scorekeeping duties, to modify the rules any way I want to. However, I have chosen not to make any changes since I am not the scorekeeper. If I were going to make any changes, it would probably be to disallow any stock selling for less than five bucks or so. On the other hand, that volatility works both ways, does it not? A person can lose 25 or 30% on one of those just a quickly as he can make it, right? For that reason I don't see a compelling reason to make that change.

Let's all make a profit this week!

Also, I'd like to see a price limit of $5.00. Or 2 contests...One 5+ and one <5...But then somebody would have to keep score and it won't be me.

I never had a whole lot of luck with stocks under 5...Especially when I paid over 10 for them...Guess I should come up w/ some new material...But there are plenty of new memebrs around who probably never heard me say that...Best...Doug(IIC)

Rob, instead of staying in cash for the next two weeks, enter me into TIII long. It should keep me in the top 5.By that I'm assuming you mean you want TIII long for both weeks, regardless of what happens the first week.

Okay, this would be a perfect time to bring this up. Here's the deal I'm going to make. Because it's time-consuming enough to keep up with everybody's picks as it is, and also because allowances should be made for those who plan on being away, here's the way it will work: If someone forsees being away, they are allowed to enter their picks more than a week ahead of time with the following understanding: that pick is carved in stone and cannot be changed under any circumstances. The reason is that if someone can get to a computer to make a change, then there really wasn't a need to enter the pick ahead of time in the first place. Does that sound reasonable and fair to everyone? (Not that it really matters. heh heh)

Rob...I don't like that rule. It doesn't state when is the earliest a pick can be entered w/o the carved in stone thingy. Is the earliest time after the market closes on Friday?

Here is what is going to happen to me...On the Friday before Easter I am going on a 3 night cruise. I plan on leaving the house before the market closes on Friday. I might not be home before the market closes on Monday. Now I can put in my pick or cash in the internet cafe onboard...But "What If" on the off chance that the internet connection on the ship just happens to go down the whole weekend...I can't enter before the market closes on Monday?...I doubt that that will happen...But it could...Although I guess I could hit an internet cafe in Mexico...But what if that's down too?

Anyway, in my case I think I should be able to say I start in cash on Friday morn for the next week and then make any changes after I get back the following week...Doug(IIC)

Some contestants whining about sub $5 stocks again I see.

Newsflash naysayers........shorting sub $5.00 stocks is real, it's goin' on every day, and it ain't no fancy, tricky, unrealistic thing to do. A decent broker like IB are all too happy for you to short sell stocks like ECR. There's no problem, no big deal.

Jim........not realistic?!? lol funny stuff. How long you been trading?? And have you ever traded with direct access brokers? Or maybe you've preferred retail your whole life....and lived in ignorance of the edge a good broker offers.

Shorting sub $5's is life dudes. And anyone in doubt about that needs to wake up and smell the roses. And, frankly, suggesting it's not realistic is simply displaying their own inexperience and ignorance.

I respect that some might not like the rule, IIC says shorting is against his religion, and I respect that.......but dudes, shorting is a reality, whether it's $3 or $103.

And I think the contest should be as close to reality as possible. Why should this competition be structured to favor people who prefer more expensive stocks? So they can be competitive? If yall can't be competitive on an open and level playing field, then give the game away and go cry to momma and tell her life ain't fair and you don't wanna play no more.

We all share the same rules, and share the same risk. And we all share the same reality. I love competition and success and will applaud anyone doing well.

Yet again I feel like flickin' foreheads! :D

I have no problem with shorting any picks. I do it all the time in real life. Personally I feel that the consistent selection of stocks under $5 is more in line with the desire to win the contest than to pick a decent stock that is ready to make a move in either direction an/or own it. There is no way anyone could convince me that it is the same picking a stock under $2 or $3 much less $5 than it is to pick a stock over $10 and to have it appreciate $2 or $3 to match the .10 gain in % a $2 stock does. But we're all here to be able to voice our opinion in some positive form of dialogue and not to berate anyone else just because our feelings about the topic may differ. I don't think anyone was asking to structure the contest to suit them in any sense that they would have more of an advantage. If anything I think it is more realistic to think in terms of stocks over $5 or even $10 for the POTW but that's only my opinion an is only important to me and my own feelings.
One thing that I have always disliked and try to stay away from is the type of insinuations that Spike has brought up here over this simple dialogue and the way some might feel about the stocks under $5. No post that I've read in regard to limiting selecting stocks under $5 has been presented in this fashion. So what gives Spike the right to come off this way? What I love about people in general is that they always expose themselves without any help from anyone else. This stuff about running home to mama and crying about life ain't fair is BS an uncalled for between any of us. It usually takes one to know one and down deep inside our own psyches we all know who we really are. So I'm taking Spike's advice and letting it go. You can count me out.

Rob
03-13-2006, 08:33 AM
. . . So I'm taking Spike's advice and letting it go. You can count me out.I'd rather see you let Spike's comments go and pick a stock, not letting someone else's opinions affect your decisions.

Sorry Spike, but picking sub $5 stocks is more about trying to win some contest than providing something useful to the group.....I don't concentrate on sub $10 let alone sub $5 stocks....Therefore, I am at a distinct disadvantage when someone picks a $2 stock and it drops 25 cents.....But I am too busy trying to make real money trading rather than win some contest....

and spike, I've been a full time trader since 1988, nearly always a schwab customer....
as one of the first day traders I got hauled in by the IRS in 1990 for what they considered execessive portfolio turnover thinking I was a drug dealer....I use to pay $100 a trade, if you can imagine that one....It wasn't long ago I was paying $75K a year commissions but that's down to about $30K now.

Now I am now an Ameritrade Apex customer and I payed out around $35k last year in trade comissions and margin interest (and I happen to have a special deal with them). Fellas, I might not be around in time to make my pick for next week, so Rob, if you could & would, let it ride on BLKB for another week.

Stooge quiz:
In 'Dizzy Detectives', Curly didn't have a gun. What was his excuse?

a) "Last week I blew my brains out, and I decided not to take a chance on anything serious happening!"
b) "The landlord's baby was crying so I gave it to the baby to play with."
c)"The real Stooges are all in the NRA."
d) " I ain't a member of the "Pis-till" club!"

the answer if anyone is interested, is: B!!!

@dmk: congrats, dude. But it's not fair.........you're using a stock over $5 to make me look bad hehehe But seriously bro, nice pick and I hope it stays hot for ya!

@ Lye lol, yes, re your ECR short attempt, I've told you for a long time you need to switch to IB! Ameritrade does SUCK! hehe It's retail and you're missin' out on an edge that you'll get at IB. I doubt you'll find any disagreement on that. And yes, I know you've negotiated cheap rates, but dude....just open a little side account with IB and check it out. You'll be able to short sub $5's and make some of the action that I'm bringing to POTW! hehe .......................Oh, hang on, Jim says I'm not providing anything useful to the group with my sub $5 picks....... lol what a joke Jim. ECR short has been worth +23% in just 6 trading days. Yeah yeah, it's not too good is it buddy? lol And as for realistic, go look at the chart and time & sales for today AND last Monday you'll note there is plenty of volume and upticks to make it realistic. IB continues to list it as shortable I see. Jim said, "I don't concentrate on sub $10 so I'm at a disadvantage". Quit moanin' and mudslinging and makin' excuses. You're either good at pickin direction and nice % movers or you're not. Don't minimize others, but maximize yourself. Work on your weaknesses and trade for maximum returns. No difference between this competition and real life. ECR is easy money on the short side in my opinion (assuming you go with a good broker like IB); a whole lot easier than AAPL long or short right now. You wanna make money or you wanna only limit yourself to certain priced stocks? I understand liquidity is big for you; you trade large. But for a great many traders, a 5K position and +$1150 on a cheap ECR short in 6 days is very nice. Don't ignore the truth dude. Your style is different, that's all. There are plenty of ways to make money in the real world, and short ECR is one of them. And dude, next time you wanna criticize, make sure your facts are straight. I'll support any argument on the side of reality. But you shot from the hip, and your shot wasn't close to the mark. Ski too.

Ski, come on dude.....it wasn't entirely uncalled for, but regardless, you know I was not implying you leave POTW with my "momma I don't wanna play no more comment". It was merely a buddy's reprimand for having a moment of knuckleheadedness  Don't quit Team POTW, dude. With your trading ability you should easily be able to turn your averages positive again and get competitive. Quitting ain't the solution. And neither is focussing on negatives. This place has been great for the positive attitudes (recently in the face of the negative and troll-like) and shines best when people are encouraging souls and seek out the truth over selfishness and pride, and over hate and resentment.

And maybe to avoid this nonsense in future, I suggest that if anyone doesn’t like the rules, then they should feel free to take the scorekeeping duties, and make the rules as per they see fit. Otherwise, just quit the useless negative comments and play the game and be positive and encouraging to others. Anything less is a recipe for disaster.

Maybe another way to achieve harmony again is to conduct a poll to ascertain the majority view as to the minimum dollar value for long or short in POTW. That way the majority decides what is fair and acceptable and realistic. And when it’s decided, the issue is over with… and that it’s agreed that the only acceptable way to bring about a rule change is either private messages to the current scorekeeper or independently created polls to seek a majority vote regarding any established rule. And from this point forward participation in the game is acceptance that no-one has the right to criticize a competitor who has complied with all rules, and thus bring disrepute and ugliness to the competition.

But sheesh people, it’s only a game! Is it too much to ask that people treat the POTW as environment to encourage and support rather than tear down and criticize? Let’s keep it Huge.

Yet again I feel like flickin' foreheads! :D

I'm with ya on this one Spike, I think these guys need to to convert to IBism and they would realize that low priced stocks can be easily shorted (most).

And what the heck is the difference if you're long a $5 stock or short it? It goes both ways...

I never brought it down to a negative level or badmouthed anyone. It was never a matter of going long or short but about the difference in the percentages made by a low priced stock vs a stock over $5 or $10. I never once stated that I was going to quit the game because of it or that anyone else should.
All I did was state my feelings about the subject and what my preferences were in a mannerly fashion. I still feel that way an it's no big one way or another in my mind how anyone else feels or wants to play it. I'm only concerned with how I feel about what I think and being true to those feelings. It's the only way I play it. It's been a nice run and now it's over for me. There's absolutely no animousity on my part towards anyone but it's just the way I feel about it now. Good luck.

I guess you overlooked my post from last friday . . .Gary,
I had forgotten that you posted that (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showthread.php?p=44289). Thanks for reminding me. If you've been reading the thread, then you've probably seen where I, in the interim, initiated a new "carved in stone" rule, which states that if one forsees not being able to enter a pick between 4:00 p.m. on Friday and 3:59 p.m. on Mondy, he may enter a pick prior to 4:00 p.m. Friday, but that pick may not be changed under any circumstances. It will go in at Monday's opening price and go out at Friday's closing price, period. (But that's usually the way you play 'em anyway, so I don't imagine you'd have any problem with that.) I'll go ahead and put you in BLKB long starting at the open Monday, and you'll see it on Tuesday-Friday's results. It looks like it opened at 19.80 and closed at 20.01, a nice little 1.06% gain for the day. It appears there's a good profit to be made in creating software for non-profit oraganizations. You're an awesome player, dude, and I stand in stark awe of your stock-picking acumen.

Yeah I like CMT too dude. I would not put them in the same group.... even though Yahoo does.

I would group CMT as Plastics (Chemical group)

Others in the group.... ICOC, ROG, SHLM, EMN

I would group JAH as Consumer Products (personal)

others in the group.... RONC, DIEX, FORD, SAMC, YCC

I know different services will group companies very differently. But CMT and JAH are both at the top of their respective groups in overall rating in my data base. Both are good value plays right now.

I liked this morning at 30.55 for a short term play. It's currently $12 off it's 52 week high, $7 bucks off its' 52 week low. With strong sales numbers, and fairly clean financials, it belongs in the 32.50-33 range (if not a wee bit higher). It looks like an attractive place to capture a 7% move.
From early December through mid Feb, it experienced a steady decline, giving up 30% of its' value. It appears to be a a rebound upward. I would watch it close if you go in, and start looking to leave it behind if it breaks the 32 mark.
I do not have a position in this firm.

And that's exactly how the market works; it's not the cost of the stock that's the advantage, but rather the ability to pick direction correctly.

Cheapies are a dual edged sword dudes, and any perception that they are an advantage over high priced stocks is an illusion. One must pick direction perfectly, which is what POTW entries are attempting to do.

But regardless of the debate, 100% kudos to dmk the last 2 days......his NYX has been a brilliant play and it's been pretty to watch. As has Quasi-Ernie's pick :D hehe

Yes spike, let us disregard the "debate" by all means. All that people seem to get from my arguments is that "low priced stocks have an advantage", and they translate that to "cheap stocks have an advantage over high priced stocks in the market". If that is how my arguments are interpreted, I had better stop right now, because I don't want to feed nonsense like that to this board, not even by association. But it is interesting to see that even completely statistics challenged people can still be very good stock pickers! :)

The (completely competition related) argument was not that low priced stocks perform better, but that a higher volatility is built into these stocks. Why is that relevant for the POTW? Well, mumble mumble mumble

Karel

There are some unbelievably strong performers in this week's crop. So far the average score among all active players is an incredible 3.18%! The highest total weekly average so far this year was 3.75% on week 1, and the next highest after that was a mere 1.24% the following week. Way to go, players!!!!

I feel it too dude. I took alot of profits today. depending on their charts I kept some of my positions partially in tact and others I just sold off 100%.... I started moving cash out of my brokerage account and into my farm account last week too. I'm ready to buy up some real estate if the right deals come along.

oh yeah.... I shorted ENER (today) in real life too.

PETE H.!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You just set a new weekly record, dude!!!!!!!!!!!! While you say that "H" on your last name stands for Hansen, we all know better ... at least for today. Today that "H" stands for HUUUUUUGE!!!!!!

Now you're all asking, "How did he do it?" Here's how: He went and found a biotech company whose future prospects suddenly started looking a lot brighter last week when they were granted a patent in Mexico for their "Proteinic Drug Delivery System Using Aerosolized Membrane-Mimetic Amphiphiles." (Try to say THAT really fast ten times.) Here's an excerpt from their company profile: "Generex Biotechnology Corporation [GNBT] engages in the research and development of drug delivery systems and technology. It also actively pursues various means by which to make Pete H. a very happy camper." Okay, okay, I made up the second part. But I had you goin' there for a second, didn't I?

And who is that slidin' spikes-high into second place? Why it's QUASI-ERNIE!!!!!! Even though he's just an "imaginary friend," there ain't nothin' imaginary about that HUGE 16.88% gain on MFLX this week!!!!!! (And yours truly is happy to have have owned it all week long. It came within inches of my 64.82 sell point today.) Way to go Q!!!!!!!! Looking forward to your next play, DUDE!

DMK!!!!!! With 14.11% that would have been high enough for the GOLD on weeks 1-5 and 8!!!! I hope you're not disappointed that you'll have to settle for the BRONZE!!!! Bud, that was a HUUUUGE winner this week, and you deserve congrats!!!

Just look at that winners' circle this week, would ya? Thirteen players out of twenty-five with a 3% or better gain!!!! That's truly awesome!!! And would you believe it? This week sets a new weekly record average of 4.2% for all active players!!!! Great-googly-moogola!!! What a week for the POTW!!!!

I don't know about where y'all live, but here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Spring is bustin' out all over!!!

Rob:
Anyone who has followed Lyehopper's posts know he is very, very good at picking quality stocks with great upside potential. He also does what I do and buys (and I believe sells) each of his picks every week.
That will tend to cause you to "sharpen your pencil" when you make a pick.

Rockin'Rob you did a great job as usual.... The flowers were a nice touch dude....

Actually I really like flowers. I have a steep bank above the pond next to my house.... I plant it with wild flowers every year. Makes me feel good to sit by the pond and just look at them.... I especially like the red, yellow and blue ones. I also like dogwood trees and redbud trees and I have dug up many from around my farm and planted them in my yard. A redbud tree (which actually has kinda purplish flowers) can have a root that goes out several feet from the actual tree making it difficult to dig up a wild one and transplant it and have it live.... A front end loader on your tractor helps.... (The preceeding was another little known Lyehopper factoid).... oui, oui, oui

I have been unable to post a lot the past couple of months

due to a recent diagnosis in our family. My

Wednesday – she is doing fine but the cancer has spread

and we are moving into the next stage of treatment –

she has plenty of people praying for her – but if anyone

else would remember her that would be great.

Hey Rob, I will start out in CA$H next week. Thanks.

Guys thanks for your accolades on my recent win. I must say that when choosing stocks under $10 Lady Luck is a big factor in the outcome . You can analyze all the charts and check the fundamentals, but in the final analsis low prized stocks are risky. Part of the cedit goes to Websman who threw down the gauntlet with his statement that "Real Men dont buy stocks over $10" That gave me an incentive to explore the world of low priced stocks .
This is the best site of its kind I know. I have learned much from all the guys here and most important ........I have made money. Thank you all .

Hey, Rob, how about giving lessons on prettying up a post – you do a nice job with flowers – any suggestions for the rest of us?The flower thing is so easy I'm ashamed to admit it. It's a tool in Paint Shop Pro called "Picture Tube." You select it and then you just point and click flowers (or whatever other variation of things in there) all over the place. If one pops up where you don't want it, you just hit CTRL+Z to undo it, and then try again. It throws 'em on there with kind of a 3-D look, with little drop shadows and stuff. (I forgot what I paid for PSP, but I bought it on eBay for significantly less than the store price. Adobe Photo Shop is the one I wanted, but it's too expensive, and I'm too cheap.)

I'm awfully sorry to hear about what you and your wife are going through. The big "C" is the one we all dread, but the good news is they're getting better and better at fighting it all the time. If you have faith in God—and it sounds as though you do—then throw all your anxiety on him, and he'll comfort you.—1 Pet. 5:6, 7

Billyjoe, my very best wishes for a speedy recovery!

Rob, my CELL is also carved in stone, more or less! I'll always try to post a confirmation, but as long as the stock stays on my screen, I'll hold it.

The POTW beat my Meachanical Fund for the fifth time now, for a total score of 13-5. I hesitate between "Way to go!", because of the amazing 4.2%, and "Way to go yet", because of the catching up the POTW still has to do. The POTW is also in the red overall.

Regards,

Karel

Q has told me to start him in $$$ and that when his flesh-and-blood alter ego settles on one of the five he's stalking, i.e. ASF, BBD, JLG, NEU, or TS, then he will play it here. Once again, go get 'em, Q!

BillyJoe, be well dude. Recover quickly. We await your return.

Karel, as a reminder, and for the benefit of any late-comers among us, the "carved in stone" rule is intended to allow players, who forsee being absent and possibly unable to pick between Friday and Monday, to enter their pick(s) ahead of time. Once entered, the carved-in-stone pick(s) may not be changed under any circumstances. The idea is that this is primarily a weekly contest, and we want to see it remain a vibrant and active thread.

LOL.... dude! What?.... NO!!!!!

Guys we don't want Rockin'Rob to get burned out, he's too big an asset to us.

Come on fellas! Who else will get on the rotation as scorekeeper?.... It will require a little training to run the program but it ain't that hard. Spike?, Doug?, Jiesen?.... Webs says he will help but only after all his travels are over.

Hey Rob.... evidentially Gary didn't see your "Q" post dude.hehe.... Hey! How about listing $$MM$$'s open positions real quick and lets see which one would make a good play this week. Should be fun dude. personally I see a SHS on BBD and think it will fall this week. Should be a better one in his open picks.

Rob,
I want MYGN long tomorrow. Thanks! If it is within the rules, I'll be posting the buyin time tomorrow morning.NB, here's how it works: When you post your position change, I take the time stamp on the message itself and find the opening price for that minute. If you post, for example, "Give me XYZ long at 11:15 for $23.10," but the time stamp on the post is 11:16, then I will look up the opening price for XYZ at 11:16. It might be $23.10, or it might be $23.12, etc.

From the wording of your message I'm assuming you don't want MYGN at tomorrow's open and will treat it that way. If you do want the opening price, you need to post it here prior to 9:30 a.m.

p.s. Looking at your avatar made me think: I love the song "Cry, Baby, Cry" from the Beatles' White Album. (I play it on guitar too, but only for myself. Whenever I play it for other people, they've usually never heard it before, and I guess they just think it's weird.):)

I'll post my buy-in. I want to see if MYGN moves a little south before regaining the uptrend. Yesterday FDG moved South for about 15 minutes, and then bounced.

We will be having some 'cry, baby, cry' without guitar. :DWhile I'm old enough to be a grandfather myself (Lyehopper came to our 25th anniversary party 2½ years ago) the wife and I never had any young 'uns. I just wanted to wait until the time felt right, and it never did I guess. Every now and then I thought: Wow, it would be cool to have a couple of little ones runnin' around. Then I pictured little miniature versions of myself terrorizing me and snapped out of it. LOL

So is this going to be your first?

I am 47 and my wife 39. Let me give the single men good advice: rob the craddle! :D We have five (3 boys/2 girls) plus this one coming. We are having a ball. Last year the oldest 3 made enough in the stock market to have to pay taxes. My 7 year old daughter signed her own return, and she thoroughly enjoyed having to pay taxes. The younger two boys missed having to file by $5 and $20 respectively.

When this one comes, I'll let you know if it is a boy or girl. No cigars from me. In the past I have handed out Twinkes and Ding Dongs instead. Got any good suggestions?

I think I will cast my lot with EXFO long again next week. Even though I lost on it last week, I still like it for several reasons.

Formerly a profitable company, it hit rock bottom in the 2nd half of 2002. Since then it's been fighting back and is just beginning to show profit again. Some of the hugest moves I've seen have been with companies on the cusp of profitability.

Having just read up on these A-B-C intermediate corrections (thanks, Spike and Scifos) I think EXFO fits the mold. And I like the fact that the three highest volume spikes in the past month have been up days, while this latest correction has been on relatively low volume.

EXFO is scheduled to report earnings on Apr. 4th, a week from Tuesday, so I like the chances that there will be more buying ahead of that date. The estimates are that the company will report earnings of $0.03 per share.

The Vector Vest Graph for the Telecomm(FiberOptics) Industry shows that its industry has been hot lately, and we all know how stocks like to move in herds. Well these guys don't sell telecom services; they manufacture and sell equipment to the telecom providers. In other words, they are a "pick-and-shovel" play in the telecom industry. I like that.

It's only been 4½ weeks since you said (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showthread.php?p=42184): “I think we should make [Rob] permanent scorekeeper...Whether he likes it or not!!!” ... and now you say you don't even have time to post a bloody pick? Shoot, just do what Karel does. He puts up a pick over the weekend and lets it ride. (He's proven to be a pretty darn good weekly stock-picker too, has he not?)

or do what I do- just pick a good one long-term and run with it week after week. I haven't had time to do much POTW research lately, but it's no problem to throw AMLN out there each weekend- and it's been a pretty good one for me so far!

Just did the count on the chart myself, and I agree exactly with your conclusions. LOOK OUT! I am a lousy counter . . . but this stock and chart look very promising. Nice $18+ target at this point. . . the R/R is tremendous if you set a stop under it. Nice pick, Rob.

Also in your favor, the stock was just downgraded Friday by some "qualified analyst." It's a sure winner now:D

I was looking at it after I read your post and to be honest I can't make it out either. I just wanted to see what your take on it was and how you guys counted it. I'm no expert with the wave counts and this one looks to be kind of hard to figure. I would have to agree with New Born's take on it with that top count and the a, b, c. But when they're like this one you really can't count on the wave count to predict or expect what they're going to do next.

You mean, from the total averages? That would be an interesting experiment.

I was really waiting for your ideas to give the POTW a twist, and this might be a good idea. The format is: the top ten in the avarages list form the POTW+ for the next week. No pick from one of those 10 = cash. I really hope my stupid fund gets beaten in this setup; I am already disappointed the POTW portfolio performs so, ahem, mediocre. But as long as my fund is winning, I might as well pick up the bragging points!

The current top 10 consists of you (congratulations!), Gatorman, me, Pete H., Gary, Dakat, Spike, TFred, Jiesen and IIC. They are all active players.

NO RAY!!!! this is no seperate contest dude!.... I'm just trying to figure out a way to get the POTW to beat Karel's fund. He keeps harassing me about how "superior" his fund is to the POTW averages. Remember my "H" factor theory?... SO I'm putting the top ten players averages (the refined "H" factor) up against his fund.... that's all dude.

Now that should give the players in the lower brackets a goal to shoot for.... Improve your scores and thus your points averages and be included in the picks that kick "Karel's Marketocracy fund's" arse!....LOL

Yes, that could be an added benefit of this setup. The top ten in the averages list isn't easy to reach, though, and you need to keep it up.

BTW, when I first started posting about a fund I "manage" at www.marketocracy.com, I called that one "My Marketocracy Fund" (Marketocracy ticker QHF). The fund the top 10 is up against is the Mechanical Fund (ticker QHOF).

Have you checked your calculator's batteries?
Why don't you actually calculate it and see if I'm right or not before you make yourself sound like an ass yet again. Rounding isn't the issue.

1.47 - 4.85 + 11.26 - 3.19 - 2.58 + 1.87 + 10.85 + 2.38 = 17.21
17.21 / 8 = 2.15125

THATS how I got 2.15, idiot. And maybe while you're at Wal-Mart getting a new calculator you should pick up a new magic 8 ball because your "new math" guess didn't work out so hot either.

Then again, perhaps you're right about the "new math". All these newfangled computers and fancy desktop calculators must just get you all confused and befuddled as to how to come up with an average. Perhaps all that cow shit is gummin up your slide rule.

For the following, I was just playing around a bit with the stock picks.
Looking for correlation between my pick, VGK, it seems that two stocks are negatively correlated AXTI and NVAX and that TRID has perfect correlation with VGK.

Now, if we use some pattern recognition code for Amibroker we have that price structure of today for VGK has lead to a close above the open 46.2% (6 times) of the time and a close below the open 53.8% of the time (7 times).

Applying the code to the other 3 tickers:
AXTI: Has closed higher than the open 57.1% of the time (8)
Closed below the open 42.9% of the time.(6)

NVAX: Closed above the open 32% of the time (17)
Below the open 56.6% of the time(30)
Equal 11.3% of the time(6)

TRID:
Closed higher 46.15% (36)
Closed lower 51.28% (40)
Closed equal 2.57% (2)

Now assuming that the pattern code was correct and that the small sample size for some of the tickers holds, then it appears like AXTI would be the rational bet to hold long.

College boy!!!! There are twelve (12) weeks in the formula.... ya gotta dig a little deeper dude. I might be an "ass".... but at least this ass can realize that we have burned more than eight weeks this year.... DUH!!!!

Thanks for keeping the book. Where do you get the opening price? LVLT opened at $4.28 not 4.24. My percentage is in fact lower than you have in the table.

I've gotten that way when I've run out of weed an or "goji,or both. Personally I don't understand the need to be that derrogatory towards another forum member over a simple mathematical calculation or mistake. It doesn't do anything towards building commaraderie.

Gatorman's average should be 2.15, not 3.15
On the weekly totals, only the last eight weeks show up. Due to the limited width of the display on this message board, weeks 1 through (latest week minus 8) are hidden, though their totals are still calculated into the average.

Gatorman's scores for weeks 1 through 4 are: 5.41%, 1.77%, 4.54%, and 8.84%, a total of 20.56. (These scores can be seen here (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showthread.php?p=41821).) If you add that figure to the sum of weeks 5-12 (17.21), you get 37.77. When you divide that total by 12 weeks you get: 37.77/12 = 3.1475.

I never did explain the hidden columns. In the back of my mind, there was a persistent thought that this might lead to some confusion, but I guess I figured I would just address the question whenever it was raised.

Scifos, I've known Lyehopper personally for quite a few years now. There are times he's made me madder than rained-on rooster in a tote sack. But you can trust me when I tell you he's no idiot.

MickyMouse has taken Level 3 (LVLT) and set the level almost unreachably high for the rest of the crew. Looks more like level 19.1 if you ask me.

Huge Pete seems to be becoming a regular fixture near or at the top of the list lately. This time he "burnt" us with Ciena Corp. (CIEN). Get it? Burnt? Cienna? (Think crayons.)

And as for the rest of us, as of today anyway, DaKat has given us the axe, or the AXT, as it were.
