View Full Version : Pre-Presidential Election Stock Picking Tournament

billyjoe
09-30-2004, 09:24 PM
Help elect the president of stocks. This election will offer no hate ads, no character assassinations, no political contributions, no hiding behind the flag, no poll taking, no chads, and no macho b.s.
Rules of the first annual pre-presidential election stock picking tournament:
There will be a limit of 30 contestants. Each will pick 2 stocks. No shorting. The first stock a contestant lists will be his/her presidential candidate. The percentage of its gains or losses will be calculated each day. The second pick will be the vp candidate. Its gains will only be added at 50% of the actual total, however, losses will be counted 100%. Picks cannot be changed as of market opening monday Oct.4th when the contest officially begins. $5000 in pretend money will be put in each stock for a total starting amount of $10000 for each contestant. You cannot pick the same stock twice. Standings will be posted at least twice each week. Contest ends as of market close monday Nov. 1st. No after hour trades will be counted Nov. 1st.
Just for fun contestants will be randomly divided into 3 groups; elephants, donkeys, and independents. Sign up now. Only the first 30 to send in their picks will be counted.
A case of beer, a wheel of Amish baby swiss cheese, and a large cylinder of slim jims will be donated to the winner's favorite political party. Only if you send a huge self addressed stamped envelope.
Example: Johnny picks AB and ABC. Each stock is worth $5000 for a total of $10000 . AB goes up 20% in value now worth $6000
ABC goes up 20% in value now worth $5500 because vp stock only gets 50% of its gain. Sorry, nobody said politics was fair. Remember if ABC goes down 20% you do lose $1000 thats why vp's are usually worthless. Only one entry per person please. Start sending your picks before it's too late. Don't be left out in the cold. This may be your only chance to beat Mr.Market. Think of the bragging value!

I've been gone for a few months, but I'm back for the tourney. In my absence from this board I have tried a lot of different approaches to stock picking. Here I want to try a hairbrained scheme I just thought up 10 seconds ago. Using MSN's screener I will screen for stocks with a rating of 10, ROE, Current Div Yield, and 3 month Rel Strenght as high as possible. I will give div yield triple weight and ROE double weight to Rel Strength, then average the three and rank the stocks. So I come up with RPI as my Prez and AZL as my vice.

__________________________________________________ _______________
Scratch all that, I want to try a different strategy, this time a secret one.
President will be ULTE and Vice is OTD

billyjoe

Scifos, Welcome back! The triple div yield weight is unique, but if it works all credit will be givin to the "Scifos Method" of stock analysis.

RL, are you out there? RL, was winner of the March Madness Tournament, with his famous "dart throw" picks. Any stock he mentions in a post gets my immediate attention. You too could become the next RL.

Darn it MEA, JUNK was one of my super secret picks. Now I'll have to go back to research .Probably will take most of the day. Incidentally pk stands for pink kompressors, it's one of those crazy federal regulations that makes you state the color of your product in the stock symbol.

Mr. Speaker, The great state of Ohio which is hi in the middle and round on the ends, wishes to nominate a candidate for president who is full of gas and is always looking for more, let's give it up for UNT. For vice president we nominate a very handy man who actually with his own two hands crafted this beautiful podium from which I speak the very capable BMHC (building materials). If for any reason UNT cannot carry out his duties, or he repels our allies with his natural gas odor, BMHC will build a bridge to unite us with our friends.

Billy Joe, Ihave been frantically looking for my prize DART. After the March Madness contest one of those FAT LADIES sat on my dart and Ihave been looking thru a lot of folds. So for now I will have to use the same dart that gave me ENRON.

Everybody watch out for RL. He wants us to think his picks are random dart throws. In reality, teams of uber-nerds in white lab coats (RL assistants) are running around a huge pole building containing RL's supercomputer. The lights all over Tonawanda dim as a googleplex of calculations result in the spitting out of a small piece of paper from the tecnological marvel. The head nerd removes the paper, without looking at it, and delivers it to RL's study, where a confident recluse eccentric (RL) reads the two four letter symbols, jauntily nods his approval, logs into $$MrMarketishuge$$.com, and types in JOBS and QCOM as his candidates. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction!

3 days of trading...I'd wait...here is a copy of what I said this morning FYI:

IPO Watch

This is an interesting one... JOBS ...It is a Chinese Employment Service Co. The offering on Wed. was $14. The IPO was delayed but the offering was higher than first anticipated by $1.00 to $3.00. It opened at $18.98. The Friday close was $26.30. I'd rate it a Strong Watch at this point. You can view their website, but be prepared to pack a lunch...It is the slowest site I've seen in a long time...especially the English version. Here is the site addy http://www.51job.com (http://www.51job.com/) However, if you are interested in reading about this company, here is a Google page you can use: http://trimurl.com/IT (http://trimurl.com/IT)

When my little sister stats to sing, thats when and only then, I shall give up the ship. Billyjoe, I'M SORRY, for all the extra work that I may have caused you. I figured the only way that I may have a chance at this go round was to throw in a couple that may have a grand stand start and enought powder in the end to sink the Titanic. I'm not sure but I may have been a few days off on this plan. The bad news section is past for CWEI, and am relaying on that other one to digest the split and spit out that 400% in just the nick of time. ::::::: ( what is that other ones call letters this week.) :::::::
If someone was to hit the goodnews button with only 6ix days left in the tourney there just might be a chance to win this thing. This sell off spree is in my plan, just need a few more days for my grand plan to work. ===> MEA

I was curious about Mr.Market's outstanding pick of HWG for this contest. If you look it up on the IBD site you might be surprised to find it is the #1 stock in the #1 group. It doesn't get much better than that. Also there is no number 2,3,4,or 5. HWG apparently has little competition. HWG is at 97.00 with no other stock in it's group priced at even $10. Although thinly traded, approximately 8200 shares per day, Mr.Market has done his homework again while we observe amazed as always. Lead on, oh huge one!

Websman, IIC, et al,

The Truth has finally come out! The National Enquirer was granted an exclusive interview with Martha Stewart's ex-gardener's ex-wife's ex-daughter-in-law, and she said that she heard from her mother-in-law that her ex-father-in-law (sort of) said that he heard Martha talking on the phone about the sale of Imclone stock. It seems that the conversation wasn't with the President of Imclone; rather, she says that he says that Martha says that she was talking with Mr. Market, and it was the Huge One who gave her the advice to sell. (Good advice, eh?)

Anyway, now that the Imclone stock sale has been solved, it also shed much light on the greater mystery: how Martha got so huge. She not only took Mr. Market's financial counsel, but she has apparently heeded his health advice, too: she has been lifting weights and drinking protein shakes.

Martha says,'I am huge! Bring me your finest meats and cheeses!"

Thankyou IIC...You have cast a bright beam of sunlight upon my shadows of darkness and sorrow.
I do miss Martha dearly. Thankyou for the links. Now I can keep in touch with Martha until she is freed from the bonds of captivity. Maybe I will go visit her, while she is in prison, and bring her a cake with a hacksaw blade enclosed. Actually, being that I work in a prison, maybe I can have her transferred to my facility, where I can give her preferential treatment. I could have Martha decorate our cells in unique and elegant ways.

Now that I've fed y'all full of B.S., I must say that I will be keeping a very close eye on Martha's "MSO" stock for the next year. I'm betting that we'll see a substantial increase in stock price right before she gets out and a larger increase after she gets out. Women and fashionally inclined men around the world will hail Martha as a strong and admirable woman. They will buy her products like there is no tomorrow. They will pay Huge amounts of $$$ to hear her speak about her trials and tribulations. I predict that she will write a book and sell many millions of copies. Basically, my fellow Mr Market forum friends...Martha will make many investors very happy. The question is, who has the nerve to take that kind of chance? Who will be willing to risk a little capital on Martha Stewart? I'm not sure I am , but I will keep MSO on my watch list. Just watching it should prove to be quite interesting.

I may just buy 100 shares just for the hell of it.

New-born baby, Websman, IIC, et al,
The plot thickens tomorrow on "As the Market Turns". A sharp eyed investor on the mrmarketishuge website notices a connection between the Huge one and Huge Martha. Mr. Market is cleared of any wrongdoing after explaining to authorities he didn't tell Martha to sell ImClone, but gave her his opinion that it didn't fit the Mr.Market model.
It is also discovered that Martha mysteriously sold BEL at 21.00. Prosecutors say she's really in trouble now and would be sent to Alcatraz if it was still open. Martha first accused Mr.Market of telling her to sell, but when shown proof that Mr.Market would never sell BEL she changed her story claiming she sold after finding out BEL worked with dirt. Her exact quote was "I hate dirt". Stay tuned for further developments.

We all have our own favorite Martha story...However, mine has to do with my intense dislike of her.

Two Thanksgiving days ago we were having the family over for dinner. One of the dishes my wife was preparing was from an issue of Martha Stewart Living Magazine that my wife had borrowed from a neighbor. About 11am I was upstairs doing my holiday dd when I heard my wife scream in the kitchen. I flew down stairs to see blood all over the place.

My wife had accidently sliced off the tip of her thumb while she reading Martha's recipe and using the Ginsu at the same time to cut potatos. I took her upstairs and bandaged her up including a plastic bag. She declined to go to the Emergency Hospital...Geez...she could've walked there in about 15 mins.

Needless to say, she was in pain the rest of the day. But my dad got some great candid thumbnail shots which he emailed to us the next day. But after everyone left I ended up taking my wife to the Emergency Room after all. We got home around 11:45pm.

Now, I blame Martha for this whole incident...I emailed her and demanded that she reimburse me for the carpet cleaning cost and the hospital bill. Her reponse was "Are you and your wife NIT WITS"? I got to thinking about what she said...and I figured out that she was using some secret code like they do in prisons so the screws won't know what they are saying. She actually felt so bad about what happened that she felt obliged to give me a hot stock tip...She was telling me to buy WITS. It took over a year for me to decipher her secret code...too bad I didn't figure it out earlier.

So you see...it all worked out in the end.

But you may be asking yourself..."You said you didn't like her IIC...why is that"?

Well, it has nothing to do with the thumb trimming or the stock market...but "Martha's Special Thanksgiving Scalloped Potato Surprise" was awful.

LOL...Insider info...not hardly...they won't even answer my emails...although I did get one from their IR firm this week in response to a question I had.

I happen to personally know quite a few investors who are from China...we talk...I read China Daily, The Standard, Quamnet and some others...I'm semi-interested in China investments

My question though was a joke...I could drive up the price at the last minute to win the contest...Unfortunately, I don't have a spare $8 mil sitting under the mattress...IIC

IIC,

Do you know anything about XING? I've been in this one since around $3. I'm looking for about $30 soon (or more with a short squeeze, since 24% of the float is currently shorted), which I think is possible if management hits their 2004 target of $310M revenue (vs $220M last year) and manages a profit this time. What do you think? Does your info point to a China that's still in a booming economy, or could there be a big slowdown coming up with the high oil prices?

I have not looked at XING for quite some time...so I cannot say.

Yes, China will boom for quite sometime IMO...however, there will be ups and downs. What worries me most about Chinese companies is the potential for accounting irregularities(I know we have them here...but there is too much happening too fast over there). The Chinese Gov't is working to crackdown on fraud and payola...but that is a Titanic task.

It is interesting that Taiwanese companies are now IPO'ing in Hong Kong too. I would not feel comfortable investing directly in any of the Chinese exchanges though.

http://www.chinatechnews.com/index.php?action=show&type=news&id=434

Here is another one...I have it bookmarked to the IPO page, but you can click Home from it:

http://hk.quamnet.com/fcgi-bin/news.fpl?par2=2&par3=8
Most of the IPO's are not coming out in the USA...so you have to sift through it.

Also, I watch this Index. SNDA and CAAS were recently added...I forget who was dropped. An interesting note is that the owners of this Index are also insiders of CAAS.

I have others ... but those sites should keep you busy for a while. Hope this helps...Best, IIC

Speaking of China...
I heard on CNN that Shanghai is getting a Hooters restaurant! Can you imagine that? A Hooters in Shanghai China? Will the Hooters girls be Chinese or American?
I've been to Shanghai, and I didn't see any girls that would be considered Hooters material. If they bring American girls though, they'll have Chinese men backed up for miles, fighting to get in.
A lot of American business has started to infiltrate China and has been, slowly but surely, destroying the Communist way of life. I believe Hooters will be the final weapon that turns China into a capitalist pig society...much like our own. After the Chinese realize what it's like not to be miserable all the time, they'll never go back to their old ways!

I wonder...does Hooters have stock??? I'll find out..

What do you mean by cold? According to NOAA our average daily HIGH in Dec is 30 degrees and 25.7 in jan. But thats only half the story. We get wind like a, well, its bad. During the winter it blows at least 5mph every day so it feels much colder, plus there is blowing snow everywhere and its dark by 5pm.

Well, a nice day for ULTE (+11%) but OTD is taking a rest from yesterday (-5%)

I have already decleared myself a winner when I sold CPYJ the afternoon before the split. Not to be bold but here are the facts::: in at $2.08 ::: out at $5.18. I played it on the safe side and only in on 50 shares. 4 foor 1 how could I resist.

Since then I"ve followed there news clips and am pleased to say I"m glad I never bought back in. Seems that where is quit a mess going on there. I shall follow it in hopes that they do get things turned around and may consider buying back in if they ever find solid backing.

I'm sitting here figuring percentages while watching old Mash reruns. RL's QCOM started this contest at 4077. Scary stuff. That Hawkeye Pierce was a real wise ass, but Colonel Potter kept him in line. Frank Burns, did you ever work with a guy like that? Never could see what Hot Lips Hoolihan saw in him . Now back to the contest.
Overall only 13 of our picks advanced while 19 declined by the end of today's trading. 4 contestants ended with both winners: Mr.Market , New-born baby , mmaarrkk88 , and ridemhigher. 7 contestants picked both losers.
Mr.Market led for 9 total days. Mea1956 and Jiesen each led for 4 days. Ridemhigher led for 3 days and RL led for 2 days.
Final results are as follows :

TOP 5 VP's
1. HWG Mr. Market +21.16%

3. ATRM -33.63

I've already picked my stock...MSO...just wait...it's going to be big! People are going to love Martha after she gets out of the joint. She will be bigger than ever!

Man, I knew it was going to be big! But...I didn't buy it...lol
