Ski, the photoís where taken in the early 90's. I was stationed at Ft Bragg, NC. I was assigned to 3/325th ABN/Recon. Iím also familiar with Fast roping. We use to slid down the ropes on top of building. Nice adrenaline rush!!

The photos are taken during what is called a Hollywood jump. We use to love these kind of jumps because we had no combat gear strapped to us. This jump I think was about 3,000 feet above ground level (AGL). Notice the chute. With these chutes we had little toggles that we would pull to allow us to control our direction. I use to love to pull into the wind to try to max the hang time. Every now and then you would get caught in a current that would keep you up in the air for a while. That was cool.

Most jumps are not Hollywood, but what we call Mass Tac, this is when can file out both doors from a C-130 with combat gear on. Normally these jumps where in the middle of the night. Hang time would not be very long. Mass tacís where sometimes crazy. We would sometimes have about 5,000 paratroopers all hitting the drop zone at one time.

We were always in a hurry to hit the ground and get out of the way. Full combat packs and the next guy was right on top of you an at night in the dark. That was forty years ago.

02-20-2006, 11:22 PM
NOW on to my next series of pictures....

When a cow loses a calf many farmers will sell the cow at market the next week or so. They have no tolerance for a non productive cow.

I have a different idea about this. When one of my cows has a calf die I get her another calf and I MAKE her adopt it. It's highly likely that (next year) her next calf will be born perfectly fine so I want to keep her around and give her another chance.... PLUS she's already making milk so why not let her raise an adopted calf. Here's how it's done....

A cow knows her calf very well. She knows it's scent and she will NOT let another calf suck her. She will push any calf away that tries and even kick them if they persist. So how do you "fool her" into taking another calf?.... and where do you get an orphan calf to give her?.... Easy! You go to the nearest dairy and get a fresh new bull calf (up to about two weeks old will work). btw.... Dairy farmers sell off their bull calves and keep the heifers and raise them as replacements. You can buy a little Holstein bull calf for about $100.

Now how to fool her into taking the calf?.... Well first you gotta skin-out her dead calf.... Then you take the skin and make a little coat out of it. Then you place the skin on the orphan calf. then you put the cow in a head gate and let the little dude suck her all he wants to.... Now he knows who his new mama is.... and he'll want to continue getting that milk. Also at a week or two old, he has more strength than a newborn and he'll be persistant.... NOW you move him around to where her head is (in the head gate) and let her sniff the skin (coat) on his back. Then you simply turn them both into a barn lot. Give her grain and water and come back the next morning and you'll find a happy cow and calf. Yep!!!! she's completely taken him and she'll raise him up to 600 pounds for you!

The following pictures were taken about this time last year the morning after I put this orphan with his new mama. Notice the skin on the orphan calves back. Notice how protective the cow is of him. Notice how she licks him and cleans him after I removed her dead calf's skin.... COOL huh?

I have done this many many times and NEVER had it fail. I even had a cow lose a heifer calf that was over two months old and I fooled her into taking a week old bull calf. lol

That little white holstein calf in the picture was sold (as a steer) back in Janurary 2006, he weighed nearly 750 pounds and I got right at $1 per pound at the Lynchburg Livestock market....je...je...je

If we get together in Atlantic City this summer I'll show you a great time weakfishing off the Barnegat inlet or Manasquan inlet rocks or in waders in the back bay behind the Barnegat inlet at night when the moon is shining off the water and you're standing in about 3' of water and you hook into one about 24/28 inches. That's hard to beat.

There are some very large shellcracker and decent bass fishing. Have you ever hit that lake in VA with the Florida strain Largemouth? I forget what it is called.

The best I've done so far was probably about 7 lbs which is a monster for Iowa. I released it so the weight is only an estimate. A 100 lbs Taimen or Tarpon someday is another goal. Oh, and I forgot about my Grander fantasy (Blue Marlin).

I too would love to hook a lunker largemouth. I used to be quite a freshwater fisherman in my youth, probably spending all day on the weekends in the summer on Cape Cod fishing. Best I ever did was catch a 3 lb bass, though I must have caught thousands of them.

Never tried it in Florida, my guess is my luck would be a bit better.

Bean,
Are you in Seattle now? The striper spring run is just beginning on the Jersey shore. I'm in Toms River, NJ and for the last couple of weeks I have been hitting the beach a couple of mornings real early before sunrise depending on the moon cycle and the tides. No luck yet but the water is warming up considerably an it won't be long. I'm strickly a lure guy but the guys using worms and clams are getting them regularly now. I'm building over on the beach right now and have an office trailer 1 block from the water so it's easy for me to store my waders and rods and tackle in the trailer and get changed there. Anyone in the area who wants to try it out can look me up or call me at: 732-830-1077 office land line or 201-832-3880 cell. I can set it up for any morning around 4:30/5:00 am until 8:00 am. In another week or so when the weather breaks and the water really starts to warm up this is some of the best beaches and striper fishing you'll find.

This was taken at a morning market in Shanghai at about 6:00 AM...As soon as I got back to the hotel room I changed shirts. I was getting some cold stares.

Here's a photo of my Great Uncle...He was the rich one in the family...He founded a brokerage firm in 1932 that is still independent.

You can read about the company on their site: http://www.crowellweedon.com

Funny, my Granddad, Uncle and my Dad were all brokers...The main reason I didn't go that route was because when I got out of college in 1975 the market was the pits...Doug(IIC)

What are you guys using to actually post open pictures? When I try from the site, it asks me for the pictures "url". My pics don't have urls so what gives. you using imageshack or something?

And for the record, you're very nice looking. You look like someone I'd be buds with. (and no I don't mean the "I jus wanna be friends" thing that some women say to goofy guys, I mean you look like a good guy.)http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

NOshadylady,
It is pretty straightforward:
1. Scan a picture into your computer, or else download one from a digital camera.
2. Go to MS Paint, and crop, edit, distort, or whatever else you want to do to it.
3. Save it to something; I usually save it to my desktop so I can find it again lol
4. Then go to imageshack, and let imageshack host it.
5. Copy the link that says "Hot link for forums."

NOshadylady,
To post an image, simply click on "post reply" like you would for any post. Then write whatever you wish to write, and when you post your image, simply use "paste." You do not need to go to the "insert image" function at all. You just click on paste, and you are done! :D

Daskro,
Defense industry? My family has done well within it. My cousin went to Univ. of Tennessee in Knoxville, and upon graduation, got a job with Texas Instruments making classified stuff for Star Wars. He invented something that won him some award from Bush '41.

My sister's son just finished college and landed a job with Boeing.

What are you looking at? Unisys? Lockheed? You don't have to tell if it's classified. . . .

Indeed. I go to Creighton University in Omaha and plan to work for Lockheed or General Dynamics. While I'll take just about anything to get my feet wet, I'm aiming towards Sanders (Subsid of Lockheed), Northrup Grumman or General D for network centric warfare development and robotics.

About Star Wars, it's too bad that Star Wars back during Bush 41' was more hype than results, but there is quite a ressurgance in the missile defense field with the development of new communication technologies and computing. Omaha (Offutt AFB) does quite a lot of development in Missile Defense. If I stay in Omaha more likely than not I'd be working in that division, perhaps your cousin can give me some pointers. :D

BTW, sorry about the strongly contrasting shadows in that pic I put up. As you can tell from the angle of the shadows, it was taken only minutes before sundown, and the sunlight was pretty strong.

In fact, just about 5 or 10 minutes later I strolled over toward the beach and took this picture of the sunset. Of course the picture doesn't do it justice. They never do.

Stky,

Maybe you dad is making excuses about being busy with work. You should give that some thought. Give this woman a break will you. I'm sure that you both have made Riverbabe feel real comfortable here. I don't think StkyTreat was laughing at your pictures. I think he was laughing at the dichotomy.

Anytime that you post fantasy, you set yourself up for all kinds of comments. I find that the best approach to a new situation / group is up-front honesty and seriousness until others get a better feel for the person you really are.

But hey, that picture is nice anyway you look at it :)

And you'll recognize I am NOT holding a Swordfish! Actually, if there were salmon in my river I would be right in there wading and flying! As it is, I have to settle for perch and northern pike here. I love to fish too Riverbabe.... We have a couple of good rivers here that I like to fish, the James River and the New River. Small Mouth Bass are one of my favorites to catch in our rivers, I use an ultralight spinning rig and a small Rapala. We have a Native river fish here called the "Roanoke Red-eye". In my opinion The red-eye is one of the tastiest fish I've ever fried. My second favorite "eatin' fish" is Crappie (black & white).

Peanuts,
I go every Wednesday or Thursday to Hunter or Windham in NY. We must ski together this season or take a long weekend and hook up to go to Vermont. Somewhere like Stratton is great skiing and better "apres ski". Not quite as good or as big as Heavenly but great skiing. Steep and somewhat narrow spruce and fir lined runs. Lots of times it will snow while we're up there and we ski in fresh powder although not as dry and as light as out west. You must ski well to be skiing that area.

The last time I was on Kerr, we were trolling along for stripers and we (my dad and I) both fell asleep. A loud horn from a passing boat finally woke us before we crashed into an island. Probably wouldn't have wrecked the boat since we were at trolling speed, but Boy that was embarrassing.

Be careful being close to those huge screens Doug. they might be transmitting something that is harmful to your health. I just picked up a nice laptop PC. I like HP's I got a DV8309. Thing is awesome in widescreen format. It makes looking over charts much more enjoyable.

Runner,
I'm not sure how long we have known each other through this forum and IBD before it but a simple photo makes it like you really know the person. Pretty neat. I was told the same thing about the chicks liking shorter hair on a man. It still wouldn't do me any good at this point in time. Nice background color on those trees.

Is this picture taken in Calloway Gardens? I haven't been there, but I went to a state park nearby, last year- Roosevelt's Little White House (http://gastateparks.org/info/littlewhite/) in Warm Springs, GA. I love places like that. It's little niches like that that you learn those rare bits of knowledge that only a few people know: FDR would periodically wreck his custom made car as he would have to take his hands of the wheel in order to shift gears. His car was also the first to ever have anything similar to modern day cruise control.

I hope the next picture, the one with the dog and you, isn't the picture of you and your wife that you promised us? :D :p I don't think she would find that very funny! :)

Lil' Lye turned three in July.... So I figured he's old enough to go deer hunting with me.... Plus he's been bugging me to death to go.lol!

I shot this doe yesterday morning with him at my side. He listened to me well and he stayed very quiet and sat still like I told him to. I told him what to expect when the rifle reported and whispered for him to plug his ears before I shot. He was watching the deer @ about 100 yards and he saw her fall....

He helped me field dress the deer and asked me a million questions about the deer's guts. He now knows that he too has similar guts inside himself.... He knows what a stomach, intestines, liver, lungs, etc., look like.

More importantly.... Lil' Lye knows (first hand) the damage done when the muzzle of a firearm is aimed at a living creature. He knows guns are a very serious tool and that they are NOT toys. (I don't let him "play guns" not even with a stick, as I was not allowed to "play guns" as a child)

After I shot the deer and we walked over to it, I explained that this animal was forever dead and I showed him the exit wound made by the bullet. He asked me about the all the blood.... I let him pat the dead animal's side and look it over.... I let him handle the rifle.... and I worked the action and unloaded it and answered many questions about the rifle, then I gave him the spent cartridge to keep.... I see him remove it from his pocket from time-to-time and smell the burnt powder.

My deer rifle is leaning up in the corner of my office right now (unloaded of course) and he completely ignores it. Mission accomplished.... Btw, my father taught me gun safety in a very similar way.

Oh yeah.... Mrs. Lyehopper cooked up a fine meal of fried tenderloin, gravy, rice, corn and biscuits last night.... We enjoyed it very much.... Lil' Lye was proud that he helped put food on the table.

Well-Sir, in VA there are hunting regulations West of the Blue Ridge.... There are regulations East of the Blue Ridge....

And then there's Lyehopper Hollow hunting regulations. Now, as the acting game commissioner here I have the authority to modify regulations from time-to-time depending on current circumstances.... jejeje!

Seriously though, I live East of the Blue Ridge (Bedford County). "Either-sex" deer can be harvested all season long during general firearms season on private land.... BTW, Bedford County has the highest whitetail population in the state.

Lye, Congrats on your booty!
plus: YOU HAVE THE CUTEST BOY! What fun he must be!
My deer/dear story: I was walking in the Forest Preserve in Chicago last week, 6 doe grazing on something ... I heard their mom calling when I approached, but they didn't move ... probably too young to be afraid of people. Then again, no gun permits at the Forest Preserve. Anyway, I went back yesteday to show my 10 year old, but they were nowhere to be found. Good thing Andrew brought his football, it wasn't a total loss.

Best,

Interesting stuff. Musical genius that he was, I'll bet there was more going on than just alcoholic breakdowns. That seemed to be an easy explanation for the unusual behavior at that time. Remember stories of Grover Cleveland Alexander ? They always assumed he was playing baseball drunk when it actually was epileptic episodes. Didn't Bix die very young?

Actually, it was during prohibition and he was drinking really bad bathtub gin, and a lot of it. It's thought that the toxins in the stuff hastened his demise, and were the cause of most of his uncontrollable behavior. Remember the old movie with Kirk Douglas, "Young Man With a Horn"? That was the Hollywood version of his story. There are also some good VHS & DVD documentaries available. The books Joe Mosbrook mentioned are really interesting reading! Sadly, Bix really was an alcoholic and died at the age of 28 in 1931. But his music lives on! Riverbabe

But seriously...Back in 1970 when I was a Jr. in High School we had to take one of those Kuder Occupational Tests...I don't remember any of my scores, however, the Top score I got was "Used Car Salesman".

One job that I think I would be excellent at is selling High Risk Auto Insurance...When I had my little advertising company I had 5 or 6 Insurance Brokers as clients...Near as I could tell from talking to them they made an average of $10 in commissions for evey dollar they spent with me...Of course they had expenses but that always sounded pretty good to me...Doug

Ya know...originally I taught my wife all this VHS and DVD stuff...But I don't even know how it works anymore...In fact...we have 3 different remote phones in the house...I hardly know how to use them...I rarely answer the phone anyway unless I recognize the name or number...Which isn't often...All my important calls come on my Cell anyway.

I don't even know how to use the coffee pot.

Reminds me of back in the 80's...My Granny called and said someone gave her a computer...She wasn't interested in learning how to use it...So she said I could come over and take it...I did...But it was a 10 key calculator...

Oh well...I guess I better get back to the instruction book...I've used digital cameras before...But this one is complicated

The entire side of the mountain, all the way up to the parkway is charred.... The dude who dumped his woodstove ashes near the woods behind his house is in deep do-do.lol....I saw on the news last evening that they'll fine him $100k-$200k for the cost of fighting the fire.... The "US Forestery Service" has a helicopter dumping water (from the "Peaks of Otter" lake) on it....

I took some (tripod) pictures Monday night from a hilltop pasture (on my farm) of the fire. As I had the shudder open (manually) on my 35mm this HUGE flame shot up about 150 ft (estimate) I got it on film. I guess a big ol dead pine or hemlock caught fire and made that flare up. The fire is about eight miles from my farm (as the crow flies) Fortunately the wind has kept the smoke out of our valley, for the most part. I was in Troutville Monday and it was all smokey all the way over there.... I'll post the pics when I develop the roll.
I posted the above on 03/08/05.... I just had the film developed today and here is a picture of that fire. It's grainy because of it being 35mm converted by Walmart onto a CD. The actual photo looks better. Hard to beat digital photography imo....

I've got some good rabbit hunting pics I took last month. They're in my 35mm. When I use up the roll and get em developed, I'll post one of the "gang"....

I posted the above on 02/20/05.... The rabbit hunting pics were on the same roll. Here's a picture of me and my rabbit hunting buddies. This picture was taken on my farm near where I snapped those forest fire pictures.... The forest fire was in the opposite direction though.... I positioned my camera on the dog box on the tuck, set the auto timer, then ran over and got in the picture, my buddy "Kenny" was looking at a toothpick.SsSsSsssss!

Well, I didn't think to photograph the rabbits. This Photo of Kenny and Pete shows some though. There are several in those plastic bags and one on the tailgate of Kenny's truck. I'm pretty sure most of us had already put our rabbits in our vehicles by the time I got out the camera. I carry a little cooler with ice in my truck so mine won't spoil before I can dress them. Now, I always gut mine immediately after I shoot one, that helps to keep them from spoiling too.... I forget how many we shot that day, maybe ten or twelve total. We've got a hunt happening here this Saturday morning, I'll try to remember to take some more pics, maybe I can get some of the dogs on chase.

I guess that was after deer firearm season, since no one is wearing blaze orange. Funny though, if you get shot through the head, you're likely to be just as dead no matter what season it is.

If you ask me, Pete looks a little bit like Doug in that photo. :)

To put your mind at ease, we always wear orange during a hunt.

When hunting rabbits you wear a game vest or jacket that has a rear pocket to put your dead game into (see photo below of Pete). When you deer hunt you don't wear a game vest because a deer just won't fit in that little compartment in the back of the vest.

In the photo you mentioned everyone had already removed their vests.... But you will notice that two hunters did have orange hats on.... btw, We really do try hard not to shoot each other in the head anyway, but if you knew Pete you might indeed be tempted to....SsSsSssss!

My wife has a big family...Of course, they are my family too...But I have a very small immediate family...Only ones are my Mom and Dad, one first cousin who has 2 kids who I've never seen...My Sister who has one step son, my son and 2 grandkids.

On my wife's side she has 3 first cousins who were in the Miss Universe Pageant...One of them who I last saw last September is a knockout...I hadn't seen her in 13 years...I thought she looked about 34 or 35 at the high end...Geez, she was 48

No, I would not say that. She's outgoing, but my oldest, Heather, is quite outgoing. She's almost like having a second pastor's wife in the family since lots of older women ask her, at age 14, for advice and interpretations for doctrinal questions. The shy one is Caleb, the oldest boy, but really, being from a pastor's family, they all relate to people quite well.

Now...I have a lot of distant cousins...But my Dad is in charge of keeping in touch with them...He talks about "His" relatives...Wait!!!...Aren't they related to me too???

someone at sometime built a dormer across the rear and removed one of those three windows.

billyjoe

Ski and Doug,
You've got eagle eyes. The dormer was added around 1973. The porch was expanded to a large wrap around shortly after the 1908 picture. I think they reconfigured the columns they just don't all show on the new picture. The missing window was an upstairs bathroom. We redid it in the early 1980's and got rid of the window.

The original slate roof lasted almost 80 years until we replaced it. Still didn't leak, but was crumbling. The turret is a 7 sided bedroom. If we ever build a new house it will have at least 1 turret. We've lived here 26 years. A previous family was here for about 40 years until the last member, a spinster aunt died under the old golden delicious apple tree in the back yard. There was no driveway and no hot water until the 1970's. I think they parked a horse and buggy in an old small garage structure accessible through the neighboring driveway that belonged supposedly to the original owners' parents farm house.

Hemp was Kentucky's #1 crop in 1900, and was a world leader in its production for rope. Then the New Orleans jazz crowd started smoking the stuff, and the US Congress outlawed its production. That's the real reason Appalachia is poor.

My family are tobacco growers from Barren County, Ky. The farm was settled in 1813 and passed down through the family until my dad sold it just a few months before leukemia took his life in 1997. There was 167 acres. If you google map search, you can find Owen Road in Barren County, near Glasgow, and that road dead ends into the center of the place--right at the home place. In fact the entire road runs into the farm. My grandfather built the house when my father was one year old. My father was born in a log cabin. The house is very sturdily built of oak.

During the Civil War Braxton Bragg's army passed right through the homeplace in its invasion of KY in 1862. There is a historical marker just over the hill from our place signifying the event(s). It is marker 698, and you can read it here: http://kentucky.gov/kyhs/hmdb/MarkerSearch.aspx?mode=County&county=5

Of course I know Knox well. Took the family their to the museum a few years back. Can't comment on any bars as we took no note of them. No rednecks bothered us. We are used to the red clay. And the 3rd Armor is just alright with us.

Great photo of the old home place. I'd say that guy was nuts to tear down the buildings. You'd love Mammoth Cave. Sign up for all the tours you can in advance. Most are free. Go before you get too old to bend. I can't do it anymore. We camped out there with the kids twice. An easy walk to the caves. They have special guided tours by the National Park rangers that are limited to a few people. They'll take you to places the public isn't allowed. If you like history sign up for the "Floyd Collins" tour. It was fascinating. The only bad thing it was the hottest day in Kentucky history when we were camping. Something like 105 degrees but 54 in the caves. Also if you like Corvettes take a tour of the Corvette assembly factory in nearby Bowling Green Kentucky. You can eat off the factory floor. Very impressive. Only the best employees of GM are allowed to transfer to that factory.

Here's a recent shot of me. This is Intramuros Golf Club in downtown Manila, Philippines. This place is awesome. It is an 18 hole course that surrounds an old Spanish fort situated among high-rises in the center of the city. I was so out of practice that a few (yes, more than one) drives went into traffic:

Peanuts:
Are you saying that you're a threat to public safety? lol

BTW, I'm no golfer at all. :)

But I must say that's a great photo of Webs, and also a great shot of you, Peanuts.
