Greetings Everyone !

I'm taking over the Pick of the Year contest from John Henry so he can continue his studies. However, I wasn't planning on changing too much unless others would prefer. I've listed the rules below, so bring on the picks or rule critiquing ! And thank you John Henry and Jiesen for your POTY contributions !!

Rules

Entries can be made anytime between now and February 1st at 11:59pm.
Short and long entries are allowed
You cannot pick the same stock as someone else
Open prices on February 2nd will be used as your entry price for the year.
You can change your pick any number of times between now and January 31s Only stocks listed on Google Finance will be allowed

FRE Long for me Ody...Penny stock w/ Uncle Sam backing and the Fed giving money away...now all I need is the banks to start lending again and the housing sales, refinance, and mortgages will pick up again.....I may be early, but more and more are talking about the "bargains" they saw or heard about...sooner or later it's gonna get to them and their gonna go in debt to get one of them there "bargains"....

I'm rooting for you because I've got a ton of FNM and they seem to mirror each other. Your logic seems perfectly reasonable but then we're talking U.S. Govt. so maybe logic doesn't count.

Can't believe I'm going to do this, but going to take BAC long for the year. I've never tried identifying stocks to go more than a week to a month at most, but I think BAC is oversold, and has the potential to grow by the end of the year with all the Fed help spreading out. Even if it be only a few %, though my thought is that it could double or at least hit 10 before the year is out.

Good luck all ! Tomorrow at midnight is the last for picks ! Though I guess technically we could accept any picks prior to opening Monday, so unless anyone minds, you have until 9:29am to make a pick Monday February 2nd.

I don't like BAC as a company, used to have an account with them. My thought is that some of these financial companies hopefully have bottomed out.... and might make a small improvement this year.... hopefully ;) Either that or I lose the contest but not my shirt

Just for what it's worth.... If I were to buy stock in an undervalued bank right now, it would be BBT.... I know some fellas that sit on it's board. A well-run outfit I reckon. Started after the Civil war in the 1870's as a farm bank and originally based in Wilson NC ..... Now keeps it's headquarters in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and has a Conservative, levelheaded group of business bankers on staff. I like BBT....

Just wondering what attracted you to LJPC? Was it the technicals or something about the company?

Doing very well, DMK, thanks! What got me into LJPC was the fact that I worked there for 4 years on Riquent's development (in the Analytical Chemistry dept). Spent 10% of my paycheck on stock while I was there, just because I got the employee discount, but I also want to see their drug succeed, and think it has a great chance of doing so (great meaning better than 1 in 3).

Even at $2 and change now, I'm still so far underwater it's painful to think about, but I know if they pull through with a positive outcome in the trial this year the stock will trade at $10-20 easily, and I'll make it all back and then some. Also, I'll be the POTY champ as a bonus! My cost basis is somewhere in the $5-10 range, but I remember buying a bunch of shares in the $3 (pre-split) range, meaning $15 now. It really hurt to see it trading for under a buck last year.

Picks are in and the year begins ! Already Peanuts, dmk112, Skkinvest, and New-born Baby are off to double-digit starts. It's a long way to the finish line that I know Jiesen is already eyeing with LJPC ;) And I nearly already lost when BAC dropped 30+% this week, only to luck out on an upgrade.

Can already tell this is going to a fun year to watch. Good luck everyone !

As with the POTW contest, going to see if I can get together some graphs to track us week to week. Let me know if you have any other suggestions we can implement.

Sorry Jiesen, I know that was a tough loss. I read a little on the company after I heard the trial did not go well, didn't realize they were trying to cure Lupus, that would have been amazing !

Any idea how the company is going to fair now? From the article I read it looked like they may be closing up by May... :(

Well, good news is Lyehopper is in the lead ! Well, if you are Lyehopper that is ;) Dmk112 is following very closely, and Skkinvest is just behind. It was a rough week overall for everyone, as near the beginning of the week we had people in 20+%'s, now no one is.

Many weeks to go.... hopefully we don't see stocks going much lower, because none of us shorted ;)

Wow, I just took the lead this week holding BAC with 54% gain, mimo_100 is still holding onto his high position at 38% with WGP.V, followed by Rob at 29% with JASO.

Great job so far everyone ! The double digit gains just keep increasing :) Let's hope it keeps going like this

Cursing myself, I've been watching LJPC and almost bought it at 0.16.... it went up to to 0.30 I believe ( I had hoped just for a quick 8 cents) and now I hear their closing shop :( Sorry Jeisen

So I always wondered, if you short a company and it goes to 0, do you win or does the broker close the trades at the best price it can as soon as it finds out and hands out your check grudgingly?

yes, picking good stocks a year ago was like shooting fish in a barrell. still, that didn't stop me from picking one that's lost >90% since... it was, unfortunately, also the biggest position in my port last year.

I'll hold with ya, I'm still in at $1.95 for a loss.. :( but I still feel this stock will shoot up again at some point.... feel it has the same potential as Citi ( which I doubled my money with earlier this year :) )

This years winner of the POTY contest is....

mea 1956 !! Well done ! +273% gain ?!?! You should buy something nice for yourself this year ;)

Those are some amazing gains guys !

Not too mention, almost all of us did really well in picking this year, great job everyone ! The average %gain for us was 85.48% !
