Greetings everyone !

Welcome to another year of stock picking with your fellow Mr. Market readers. The rules are listed below, as well as they are on the scoreboard which is linked below my name.

You start with $10,000, and try to make more money than your competitors. And since the name of the contest is Portfolio of the Week, special recognition will be going to those who can sit in the top three slots come the end of the week more often than the rest.

If you have any suggestions for a change in the rules, or statistics, or graphs that you wouldn't mind seeing, please post. Otherwise give us your top picks and may the best trader win !

RULES:


Stocks listed on NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX allowed. ETFs allowed. OTCBB and pink sheet stocks not allowed.
$2 minimum for cheapest stock price.
Weekly contest begins after the close of market of the prior week's last day of trading.
A pick before the weekly contest's first day of open trading will get the first day's open price.
A pick during open trading is Real Time, with the price matching the post time of your pick....(No negotiations allowed.)
A pick after market hours will get the following day's open price.
Your position will automatically be LONG if you do not mention play with your pick.
CLOSE first position, and OPEN a new position is available after close of market of the week's first day of trading, and anytime thereafter.
Real Time CLOSE and OPEN prices used during open trading,with prices matching the post time of your position change....(No negotiations allowed.)
CLOSE and OPEN orders after market will trade at the closing prices for that day.
CLOSE and OPEN position requests must be mentioned in the same post to qualify.
Three position max. limit per week.
Cash position allowed only on third position.
The close of market on the week's last day of trading concludes the game for the week…..

Thank you all and good luck, so far no greenies yet. And to make sure we only look for greenies, I was thinking you can only achieve a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place recognition if your pick or portfolio was green at the end of the week, just in case everyone ends up in the red.

Well, trying to go with BRKR short. I think she is heading south to touch her Psar level before attempting another run up. Hopefully not until next week of course ;) Though she does look like her pattern has been up down up down, with the down being major (like yesterday) before reversing, so hopefully she breaks her pattern tomorrow.

Going to try EOG long this week....

Forgot to mention that I chose EOG long based on a Psar reversal. Thinking she will hit her long Psar target this week.... though she didn't fly very high yesterday :( But she does have another candle or 2 to go north before hitting :)

Aye Rob, you would have crushed us all with JASO long, it would have hit +48% from a Monday entry to Friday.

From Monday's open to Friday's close it was up 45.78% to be exact. I always manage to be a little off on the timing, which is why I'm more of a long-term investor than a trader. To me a week is a very short horizon to look at, whereas with Douggie it's an eternity. The good news about JASO is that I own it in my real-world portfolio, and I bought it at $1.96. :):cramersmiley::cramersmiley: Beauty, eh?

My pick this week is going to be ESEA long. I see a sort of reverse head-and-shoulders pattern there, and we're on the right side of the right shoulder. I think it will break the neckline ... hopefully this week (the timing thing again).

FAZ is a "3X short (Bear) ETF" (Exchange Traded Fund) That uses Triple Leverage to short sell financial securities.

So FAZ (long) is actually a short play on the financial sector X3.

FYI

Some other 3X "Bear" short ETF's are: BGZ, TZA, ERY, FAZ

Some 3X "Bull" long ETF's are: BGU, TNA, ERX, FAS

I like trading ETF's and was recently introduced to them by IIC aka "Doug-E-Fresh"....

I picked it after three red days (ie, looked like a good dip trip entry); (3.) it was sporting a triple top breakout; and (4) I was buying support on a rising trend line. Usually when you have four good reasons to buy a stock, you don't get burned so badly . . . .

Looks to me that $14.25 is a decent entry now.

Congrats Lyehopper, Rob, and Eliaskane ! This would be Lyehopper's 2nd time placing in the top 3, 3rd time for Rob, and 1st time for Eliaskane !

Lyehopper shorted Aflac (AFL) at a great time. Guessing the stock dropped sharply this week after it was downgraded. Volume for Friday alone:

Friday: 35.54M Avg Vol: 5.43M

Rob grabbed POT also at a great time, just as the entire Non-Metallic Mining had a pretty good week. Any time you can avg a 10% gain for the week, you're doin' something right :)

And Eliaskane's AVD steadily went up this week, despite several fluctuations up and down this past month. Not too shabby for another rough week for the Dow.

Unfortunately the rest of us were not so lucky this week. Already seeing stories of bad news this week. Hang on tight everyone, shorting may be the correct move at the start of the week, before a bullish Friday. Hope my Stock Forecasts nay be worse than my Weather Forecasts :)

Ok, now the bad news. I may have to trim down the time I spend working on stocks while at work, and I know my time at home online has been cut nearly in half due to trying to move, take care of a toddler, clean, etc etc.

So if there be anyone out there who wouldn't mind taking over scorekeeping, or at the very least helping out, I'd be grateful. Love competing with everyone here, and on Spike DMC and Rob's POTW as well (to which I'm doing much better on their contests, lol) and would hate to have to close shop.

Going to try XEC long this week. Think she's a risk, but willing to try since all my other picks here have been terrible. She doesn't have the best pattern for a Psar hit that I usually look for, but she has it generally.

I think both AAUK and HOKU will both be great LT stocks. AAUK handles precious metals which will thwart inflation, and HOKU has outstanding solar industry exposure as well as LCD production exposure. I chose these this week due to the recent weakness and I'm hoping for a technical bounce

Spike timed his entries and exits nearly perfectly this week as the market went up then down. Peanuts did almost the same with AAUK and HOKU, and a good exit in general from AAUK as she was just kept going down Friday. Peter's pick with COF was just good as is from Monday to Friday. It was a slippery slope to green for a great short !

It's a wicked, wicked market; one in which it is exceedingly difficult to know what to do. What to do ... what to do ... what to DO!

And there is the answer: DO long, please, Ody.

Diamond Offshore Drilling (http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=DO&p=D&yr=1&mn=0&dy=0&id=p51512675323) is scheduled to report earnings this Thursday, and analysts are expecting 2.35. The PEG is an attractive 0.3. Like so many good companies, they've been beaten down in this shaky economic climate, probably more than reality warrants. And while it is true the market can remain irrational longer than most of us can remain solvent, in the final analysis all we can do is take our best shot.

I like Golar LNG here because the p/e ratio is low and dividend yield is high. This is a secure dividend and a company in a leading market position. It should have many years of upward price movement. In the short term, this seems very attractive for a quick gain. We'll see....

I think that the shippers will be in the dirt by the end of this week, but I still may exit early if I find another good opportunity.

Rumor mills are running strong... market seems to be trading less on fundamentals and more on fear :eek: The VIX should be taking off again

I'm going to go against a long term trade concept that I have and actually buy the US Dollar. It has been forming a triangle for 1 month now after breaking through a resistance line. The chart of the $USD does not reflect a move up, yet, but looking at the chart of UUP, it seems that traders are positioning themselves for a breakout from the triangle to the upside:

I'm going to go against a long term trade concept that I have and actually buy the US Dollar. It has been forming a triangle for 1 month now after breaking through a resistance line. The chart of the $USD does not reflect a move up, yet, but looking at the chart of UUP, it seems that traders are positioning themselves for a breakout from the triangle to the upside

And I won. The result is a bit flattered though, because EXM dropped 12% at the week's open compared to the previous close. Without that drop my result wouldn't have been 32.4%, but only 16.2%. I must say that until (and including) now the POTW has been very nice to me this year, as my cumulative total is positive while EXM is down 24% compared to the open on January 5th (the start of the 2009 POTW).

Oh yes, I am still long EXM, two weeks after deploring I was holding it in the POTW. Was that a sign of the surrender we are all waiting for? :cramersmiley:

A change in sentiment throughout the market, but especially the profit taking talk I've been hearing. It's up nearly seven fold since the bottom... there's some nice money to take off the table. But I can see it going up tomorrow as well... this market is nuts

Congrats Peter ! The market seemed to turn on most of us at the end there, but Peter was able to hold on his number one spot to the end. This makes for his 9th placing this year, well done !

Peanuts was very close but came in 2nd, still not bad with DBB, an ETF I've never heard of ;) (Powershares DB Base Metals Fund (ETF)) This also makes for Peanuts' 9th placing for the year. Great job sir !

And Karel of course has been making the rounds with EXM this year, coming in 3rd with a modest 3.37%, and his 14th placing and still in 2nd place for his ROI ! A force to reckon with still ! (should I put you down for EXM this week? ;) )

I double checked from here (http://www.hquotes.com/tradehard/simulator.html) and though my equation looks correct, the numbers don't look right to me.

Karel brought it to my attention a few weeks ago but I just haven't had a chance to delve much into it until now. If anyone has any suggestion on my error I'd be greatly appreciative. Just look at your sheet from the POTW link below, it should tell you the numbers and equations that the cell is representing. Here is the Math Exp. and Kelly Value equation I am using in each of those cells in case you can't see them.

The Kelly % statistic was developed by John Kelly at AT&T's Bell Laboratories in 1956. John Kelly's original work dealt with long distance telephone transmission signal noise. You can read his original AT&T paper on signal noise by downloading the PDF at the bottom of this section.

Kelly's work is recognised today as being able to determine the optimal betting size which will maximise the growth of your portfolio over time.

The formula for the Kelly % is:

Kelly % = W - (1 - W) / R

Kelly % = Percentage of capital to risk per trade for maximum gains.
W = Historical Winning percentage of the System (trades).
R = Historical Average Win/Loss Ratio (AVG Dollar Win/Loss).

The Kelly % statistic can be applied to a system as follows:

Peter has a trading system with a winning percentage of 50% with average profits twice the size of his average losses.

From this brief description we know that Peter has a profitable System.
Putting these figures into the formula for Kelly % gives us W = 0.5 and R = 2. Substituting this into the Kelly % formula gives the Kelly % as 0.25. The Kelly % tells us the amount of equity Peter should risk in order to obtain optimal profits is around 25%.

It should be noted that this amount of risk can be spread over the number of trades on average the System will have open at any one time.

It is common to use 80% of the Kelly % as the optimal risk that is tolerable to a trader. In the example above, Peter has a system that on average has 10 positions open at any one time. He can spread his (25% x .8 = 20%) 20% risk over his ten trades. For Peter to obtain optimal results from his system, he should risk 2% for each trade.

Hi Ody, you have the W/L ratio negative but that should be a positive value, as it compares sizes only. As a result you get a high Kelly Value, which is unlikely for a string of trades with a slight overall loss. I get 0.0389 for the KV when I drop the sign. The rest looks OK.

Well, I had already remarked that I had almost doubled my money in the competition this year, while EXM actually lost a bit (at that point). So my gains are purely the difference between the weekly close and the next open, and that has been ridiculously in my favor. Now the open was a few percent over the close, and so against me. I am not complaining!

Peter came in with a great +6% on MED's back. The stock just went up every day last week. Great pick sir ! Medifast, Inc. (Medifast) is engaged in the production, distribution, and sale of weight management and disease management products and other consumable health and diet products.

Peanuts just barely took 3rd ahead of Rob ( who just barely beat Hitmlong in his contest ;) ) shorting ZSL. Very good call that we would end upwards this week Peanuts ! ProShares UltraShort Silver (the Fund) seeks daily investment results that correspond to twice (200%) the inverse (opposite) of the daily performance of silver bullion as measured by the United States dollar fixing price for delivery in London.

I took 2nd shorting AMPL, slightly risky but well worth it ;). All on technical analysis, for some reason I've been picking Israel companies a lot of late. Ampal-American Israel Corporation (Ampal) primarily acquires interests in businesses located in the State of Israel or that are Israel-related.

Peanuts grabs 3rd place with TEX, increasing his stake in 3rd place for the year... so far ;) He is also on his way to having the most placings to which Karel currently holds the record of 17. 2nd place was a neck and neck race that Steelman came out ahead of Rob with VIT. Didn't look good until some resolutions (http://www.tradingmarkets.com/.site/news/Stock%20News/2650299/) went through on Friday that rocketed the stock up good. Congrats Steelman for your first 2nd place win !

Rob took another 3rd place winning with UAM. Not much news on this stock that I could find this week, but it was steadily going up before a pull back on Friday that it did recover from. Another good win by Rob !
