The movie! Don't forget the movie! Billy, aren't you going to be one of the judges? And Doug a prosecutor? And me the not-too-brilliant sultry what-was-her-name from IBD?

River,
I forgot all about that. I was going to play the senile old judge that kept ruling in favor of IBD and kept forgetting to put his teeth in or wear clothes under his robes.
------------billy
Well...Good news and bad news...Apparently IBD was appealing the thrown out verdict by the senile judge...So they lost that appeal and now the whole case goes back to the lower courts apparently to be tried all over again
In case U wondered what happened in the market 2day...I accidently dropped a Chocolate Chip Cookie on the SELL ALL button on my keyboard while I was eating my lunch...Sorry...Doug

Here's the scenario...
On Thursday when the market tanked I happened to be super quick and picked up some QID at 2.50 and sold it at 16 a short time later....It now stands at 18.50.
Problem is the 2.50 buy was later cancelled...But I sold it at 16 long before the buy was cancelled.
So what happened...Was my sell cancelled too?...What about Mr. Shrewd who bot my shares at 16 and later sold them for 18?
Or...does my 16 sell now turn into a short sale and I'm in the hole 2.50sh for being so clever?
But wait...I never selected Short Sell when I placed the trade...In fact, I did it in my IRA and Sell Short is not even an order type option in that account.
So what really happened to me and the guy who bought my shares and the brokers and where are those shares?
Anyone care to guess?
Doug
btw...This didn't really happen to me...But somebody was involved in this type of scenario and I'd like to know what the outcome was

my guess (and this is just a guess) would be that your sell order, and therefore mr clever who bought them at 16's orders (both buy and sell) would have been cancelled, as would the orders of any other traders lucky enough to have participated in the ensuing fun games and such with the pretend shares of stock. it's the only way that cancelling that first trade can make sense, and I suppose it's one reason for the delay in settling trades.
but really, there should be no take-backs in this game. they make you sign all kinds of waivers and such when you open your account telling you that you can't take back your decisions, but *they* never agree to the same.
if there was a computer glitch telling someone they can buy shares for a penny that should have been a buck, well, then the bank who owned that faulty system should be on the hook and cough up all shares promised. but I guess that with this credit crisis we're in, it's all fine and dandy to just break a contract now and then if it's convenient for you (especially if you're the bank and/or can afford a good lawyer). and if you can't pay your mortgage, just walk away, because there'll always be another sucker willing to give you another one. but I digress... sorry!
billyjoe
05-08-2010, 09:43 PM
Doug,
I say you never really bought QID so you couldn't sell what you never bought. Mr. Shrewd didn't know he was buying from a flim flam man so his buy stands. Somebody else has to worry about how his shares get delivered.

Doug,
What if Walmart mistakenly buys a truckload of non Chinese stereos that are exact duplicates made by a reclusive nerd in his LaJolla garage? They got them for $2 a piece less than the normal Chinese units. You buy one for a joke and resell to your least favorite in law. He finds it to be the best stereo he's ever heard. Meanwhile Walmart finds the shipment was U.S. made and wants to cancel payment. They track down all purchasers and tell them to return the defective units. The immigration service gets involved. Feds come to your door. You send them to your brother-in-law's house. Does he have to give up his favorite audio receiver?

Hi Doug, this happened to me last Thursday; please bear in mind i am on a 15min delay and UK time is +5hr on US time. I was selling 115 put contracts and was quoted $2.03 by OptionsXpress i reviewed everthing and pressed the submit order button at exactly 2:49:14sec there was no sign whatsoever of a fat finger hitting the wrong Wall St button. At exactly 2:51:03 the contracts were sold for 0.25 they put $2875 instead of $23,345 the contracts either side of mine were $2.09 and $1.38. Still not knowing anything about the fat finger i contacted OptionsXpress who said they would look into it, low and behold the following day on logging into my account i saw they had put 115 contracts back into my account with a sell order on them which sold in a nano second for .75. I contacted them again saying i was not happy to be still $1.03 out of bed! they said i was lucky they had got a price improvment out of the exchange.Surley when the stuff hit the fan they knew long before i did as they have instant streaming from the stock exchange.Friday night came and i recieved a call from head of the trading team saying it was the best they could do and that was it. To rub salt into the puss filled wound they even charged me $172 fo selling the second lot of contracts. On digging about i noticed that they had put down two different exchanges that dealt the orders? i read somewhere that the NASDAC were going to cancel all trades concerning 296 companies on the mad 15min spell. So now i am $11,603 down through no fault of my own!! In your valued opinion as well as everyone elses what the hell should i do now? do i consider myself fortunate to have got a price increase or was i robbed?.
Nick.

Trading going OK...Only made 8 r/t's last week 4 QID and 4 TZA...went very good...If it had all been in one day...Also held some QID over the long weekend.
Hope everyone had a nice 4th...I don't know how many may find this of interest and I've only mentioned it a couple times at my chat but I thought I'd take a stab at showing you a couple charts that may spark some ideas for you in trying to help determine the trend. I do this for myself with the Nasdaq 100 but I doubt many are interested in that index so I made up some charts of the SP 500. The top chart depicts the percentage of SP 500 stocks that are in a daily ema uptrend...The bottom chart depicts the SP 500 Daily Index value....It is my first shot at ever doing .xls charts so they are not that great and are not exactly the same size...Thought about possibly doing an overlay or leaving the Index chart out and simply putting a link to it. Here ya go: http://sharptraders.com/sp500ema.html (http://sharptraders.com/sp500ema.html) ... Used eod data for this altho I run my own intraday too...Doug
Please take a look again...I was able to put both lines on one chart http://sharptraders.com/sp500ema.html (http://sharptraders.com/sp500ema.html)

You don't look at the BDI or Dr. Copper, do you?
Long term bear mentality is going to get in the way of your day-trading activity. That bias just might lead to an unusually uncertain conviction on next week's trading due to the market whip about to be applied to bears

Day Trading on techicals and intermediate and long term investing on economics are two completely different animals...Sorta like Bears and Bulls...Doug
PS...But you do make a good point...I made a lot of technical trades last week...But the two weeks prior I mostly sat on my hands and watched and did almost nothing because of my longer term view...Coulda been worse tho...I could've tried to buck the technicals.
It is very critical as a day trader to let your personal view take a back seat to what is happening right in front of you...But as I always say...I'd rather miss a profit than take a loss

Both of these are considered leading economic indicators. If you had been reading Peanuts Potent Plethora of Profit (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showpost.php?p=98894&postcount=1183) back in April of 2009, then you would have been informed on this subject.

Ah yes, Dr. Copper, the poor man's silver. With copper hovering around 3.00/pound, even with a terrible housing market, how can you go wrong hoarding pre- 1982 cents, with a current melt value of .02? It only will get better.

13/13 is impressive no matter how you look at it.
Well...the streak ended at 22 late yesterday when I lost .03sh on BWS...But not so bad tho as usually when a nice streak ends it is by getting WHACKED on something.

Hi Everybody...I'm still around...Been very busy traveling and working...Have managed 75 trades ytd.
Unfortunately my parents have not been doing well...My dad has been in hospitals for 6 weeks and was moved to a hospice on Friday. My mother is now in a memory facility.
I've still managed daily (MoMo & Market Calls) and weekend updates (IIC 100) but sometimes I do them late at night. This weekend I stayed home. I also started a new page yesterday called Mr. Breakout's Technical Faves http://MrBreakout.com if you'd like to take a look.

That site is awesome! Did you see the YOKU $65 April calls?? They are up .70 to .75 X .80! That's a 700% gain today alone!! Actually 800% since the low was .10 and the high .90!
Do you guys have some suggestions of what makes the YOKU chart stick out among the others there? I thought the MA weren't as steep so maybe it wasn't as good but that last candle is prettty bullish. Was that it??
Actually it is a combination of indicators...And in all honesty my lists do much better overall on up days...All about momemtum.

You mean if the indices are up right? Of course you mean the corresponding index of the stock listed should be up? So for example, if you have a breakout NYSE stock then you say it's better to play the option call if the NYSE composite is up?
Best wishes with your dad.

Right to a point...I don't know jack about options anymore...However, I was talking about indices but more importantly I'd say if the industry group is moving...Best, Doug

Chart did look AMAZING but how do you explain it was down for the day?
Close Friday was at $43 yet it opened yesterday at $42.34, hit a high of $42.79 and closed at $42.15. The chart looked like it would do better.

Nice looking chart, but I don't see where the rate of their earnings increase is going to be able to sustain a 120 P/E. On the other hand, you can buy GOOG (http://bigcharts.marketwatch.com/advchart/frames/frames.asp?show=&insttype=Stock&symb=goog&time=8&startdate=1%2F4%2F1999&enddate=4%2F19%2F2011&freq=1&compidx=aaaaa%3A0&comptemptext=&comp=none&ma=3&maval=50%2C200&uf=128&lf=268435456&lf2=16777216&lf3=67108864&type=4&style=380&size=2&timeFrameToggle=false&compareToToggle=false&indicatorsToggle=false&chartStyleToggle=false&state=11&x=35&y=12) right now at a huge discount, < 20 P/E.
Of course, unlike you, Doug, I tend to hold on to stocks longer than 25 minutes.

But I have a lot going on and Monday I flew to Vegas at 6am...worked till 8:30pm...Crashed and then drove to LA the next day and flew back to Sac Town that night...Tomorrow I have a long weekend drive...It never seems to end.
Anyway...I posted RAX, BGC, DHX around the net last weekend...They were not for me...I just post what I think most ppl might want to look at...As for me...I have no idea what I will look at when I get up in the morning.

Well...I went down to LA this weekend to see my Dad. I guess he was just holding on to see me one last time as he passed away 3 hours after I saw him.
I don't think anyone at the forum here ever met him but he was a stock broker from the 50's. Later he worked for Bill O'Neil and then IBD for years.
He taught me CANSLIM back in the 70's and early 80's. Although I gave up strict CS in the late 90's I credit that knowledge for giving me the goundwork for what type of trader I eventually became.

Just updated your Flags, Pennants & High Tight Flags ►►► http://www.sharptraders.com/flags.html (http://www.sharptraders.com/flags.html) I was gonna wait till 2012 to start updating again but we don't wanna miss anything this week. Also, please note that I did listen to the comments about listing too many low priced stocks so I made an adjustment...The low priced ones will still appear but we should have some that are a little higher priced from now on...However, due to the nature of the qualifying criteria low priced stocks will dominate the lists simply because they tend to be more volatile ...Consequently we find more lower priced poles
Not a whole lot new on the Flag frontier 2nite...But you may wanna still watch yesterday's list http://www.sharptraders.com/flags.html

Hi, I have had a look at your list of stocks and their power ratings. Looks like a nice set of momentum plays.
Could you please help me with understanding the list a bit? The ratings from A to E, are these a measure of the technical strength of the stocks?
Would you consider the A+ ones to be the best ones to focus on if one would like to trade like Mr.Market?

I cannot speak for Mr. Market...Maybe he can comment.
The ratings are based on a formula that I came up with that combines some fundamentals and technicals. These are not recommended buys or sells but they are intended as a starting point for stocks worth further investigation.
Thanks...Doug

Thanks,
I understand you have a secret formula, but what do the ratings A-E mean? What does it mean that one stock gets an A+ while another gets an E-.

Also, how do you select the stocks to "IIC 100" out of the thousands on the powerrating page?
Thanks,
I understand you have a secret formula, but what do the ratings A-E mean? What does it mean that one stock gets an A+ while another gets an E-.
I rate them using multiple criteria and assign a numerical value to each criteria between 1 and 100. Then I add them all up and the ones scoring the highest are A+ and the lowest are E-.
One thing I don't do is weight the criteria...I'm thinking about doing that but have not taken the time yet...Then again I may feel that one criteria is more or less important than somebody else.
My suggestion on the long side is to take the A and A+ stocks and run them through your preferred fundamental and/or technical scans.
Best...Doug
