Regarding the charts... pretty cool idea.
Regarding the charts... pretty cool idea.
I've had the charts for a long time...I was just thinking that it might be good to post the MoMo List at one place instead of all over the Net. I could also post other lists that I post here and there???
There is a pop up which most pop up blockers will block...But if there is enough interest then I'll get rid of it...thx...Doug
Please click link for Today's MoMo:
http://SharpTraders.com
Got some feedback on the new idea to post it on the Web...If I decide to keep it at the site I will remove the Popup. My computer blocks it but I did hear a few complaints about it.

Agreed about the volume on many of those. I've only been watching QID and SDS because of that. I might be interested in MYY if there were a bit more volume. Given that the nasdaq is generally more volatile, it's QID I bought when my analysis concinced me that we've got another 10% or so to the downside over the next few months.
Interesting...Naz gaps and opens right dead on 1st level resistance...Well, I gotta go...will be back home this evening...Be careful out there...IIC

I'm running a little survey and maybe you could help me out.
If you could get a FREE email alert service... what types of stocks (their criteria or parameters) would you like to receive?
I'm not talking about entering your watch list and criteria...I'm talking about something like this:
Stocks within 2% of a new high, up at least 1% on at least 1.25x ADV....or...MACD crossovers with a CCI(20) over 70...or... whatever.
I'm talking intraday alerts.
I'd appreciate knowing what people are looking for intraday.
Thanks In Advance...Doug(IIC)

I would be very interested in this, Doug. I have some indicators, like my version of a price oscillator for individual issues, that I would contribute.

One that I can think of would be movement on larger than avg volume prior to upcoming earnings.
Also a technical indicator of a base after a pullback from a 52 wk high..

MiMo...I was thinking more about something I could run and send out...I have the ability to send 30,000 emails at a time...Could be more if I pay more. What are the criteria...Sounds like I couldn't scan for it myself???
Grebnet...Those sound interesting. Might take some pre-work tho to set up those which are to announce the following week...then set up a price percentage change parameter and a volume parameter. How far in advance are you thinking and what would be your price % and vol. % parameters?
The second one is one of my FAVE chart patterns...BASE is subjective tho...And I'm not sure I could run a R/T scan on those...I might be able to tho...Any parameter suggestions?

Text Of Federal Reserve's Interest Rate Decision
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The following is the verbatim text of the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates released Wednesday, March 21:
The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to keep its target for the federal funds rate at 5-1/4 percent.
Recent indicators have been mixed and the adjustment in the housing sector is ongoing. Nevertheless, the economy seems likely to continue to expand at a moderate pace over coming quarters.
Recent readings on core inflation have been somewhat elevated. Although inflation pressures seem likely to moderate over time, the high level of resource utilization has the potential to sustain those pressures.
In these circumstances, the Committee's predominant policy concern remains the risk that inflation will fail to moderate as expected. Future policy adjustments will depend on the evolution of the outlook for both inflation and economic growth, as implied by incoming information.
Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Ben S. Bernanke, Chairman; Timothy F. Geithner, Vice Chairman; Thomas M. Hoenig; Donald L. Kohn; Randall S. Kroszner; Cathy E. Minehan; Frederic S. Mishkin; Michael H. Moskow; William Poole; and Kevin M. Warsh.

Good luck with whatever course ya take. At least QQQQ hit its head on fuzzy C resistance today (http://technicaltrades.net/Scuttlebutt/viewtopic.php?p=996#996), so you will likely get some retrace for QID?? Not sure I'm too impressed with the bullish potential of QID at this stage though.

FWIW...As you may have noticed I have been tracking the Number of new highs on the IIC 100 lately...This week we have had 12, 20 and 20...Eliminating the ones that reached a new high on more than one day this week we have a total of 31 stocks on this week's list that have hit new highs so far this week...Only 69 more to go...lol
Anyway, I have decided to post them each day at the site on the IIC 100 Scans page...At the end of the week I'll take down the daily lists and post just one list for the week eliminating the duplicates...Then I'll start over next week.
Also, for the curious you may have noticed the little Yahoo Group charts I've been posting at the bottom of the same page...I've posted 83 charts so far and still have 131 to go. Once I do that I'll set up a separate page.
I think it gives a nice little overview at a glance of what's moving.
These group charts are in Real Time when Yahoo is not screwed up which seems to happen every morning lately for an hour or two. They are also screwed up a lot during the market day at Yahoo Finance the last week I've noticed.
I'm still in the Under Construction phase and probably will be for another 4-6 weeks until I finally decide how I want the whole site set up.
Ideas welcome...Thx...Doug(IIC)

I know, I saw your pick. The chart looks great! Looks like this is the first time on your IIC 100 for it! Good luck!
FYI...the reason it never made it before is that eps projections going out a certain period of time are one of my criteria...Until this week I did not have access to projections going far enough out to meet my minimum...So, even tho a stock is not listed it doesn't mean it is not good.
As I mentioned before...there are some problems with my list, but there is w/ any mechanical scan. For example, at one point HANS was # 1...they announced and they dropped off my list. The next week they were back at # 1. The reason for that is that either they or the analysts did not update their longer term projections or at least I didn't have access to those updated projections the night I ran the scan...But by the next week I did have the new projections...That may be a flaw, but I have to cut it off somewhere.
That is also why ERS never made my list.

I don't know if you remember several months ago I said all I needed was to gain 1% a month for the next 7 years and my retirement goals would be met. You said 1% was very easy and I should be able to do much better. So far I'm 4 1/2 months ahead of schedule , but 1% compounded month after month year after year is still harder to attain than it would appear.

I'm gonna stand by what I said. Unless you are dealing with very large amounts (over 7 figures) I really don't see a problem with averaging over 20%+ a year. Of course there will be months when you lose...But there should be months where you make a lot more. One thing that can hold you back though is keeping a lot of cash on hand. For eample, you could have $100 grand in your portfolio but average 50% in cash throughout the year...Then you'd have to make about double the % on your investments for your whole portfolio to increase by your target amount.
Now, if you are good at calling the market direction you could stay in cash when it's going nowhere and then back up the truck long or short(if you have non-tax deferred $$) when the market is really moving.
Also, if you can...you could day trade...Takes more time but I cannot see making less than 20% a year day trading.
Of course, you could always buy the new 'Forever" stamps for 41 cents ea...But I wouldn't expect to make more than 3% a year. ;)

Doug,
Good point about being in cash when the market stinks. I've got almost nothing in cash and make a killing in months when the market does well and get killed when the market tanks. Please tell me 30 days in advance and I'll know when to go to cash.
River,
I think e-trade is also offering 5.04 for idle cash in trading accounts.

Doug,
I don't know if you remember several months ago I said all I needed was to gain 1% a month for the next 7 years and my retirement goals would be met. You said 1% was very easy and I should be able to do much better. So far I'm 4 1/2 months ahead of schedule , but 1% compounded month after month year after year is still harder to attain than it would appear.

Well Billy...Looks like the experts at Duncan-Hurst can't do it...But you could just trade the IIC 100 Top 5...You'd be up 40% YTD and could take the next 2 years off and still be at your annual target.

IRS instructions say filing is due 4/16 except in certain states that recognize Patriot's Day...But since it is also Emancipation Day recognized in Wash DC they updated their site...
From irs.gov : My IRS tax instructions say I should file by April 16, 2007. Is this correct? This is not correct. At the time these instructions were approved for printing, IRS believed it was correct. Thus, any IRS form, instruction or publication that currently shows an “April 16, 2007” due date should now be read as “April 17, 2007.”

So far, I have not been able to locate Real Time Shanghai SSE charts..Delayed are easy to find though.

I wonder how many of those were second homes? Or is that important? I believe alot of speculative buying (ie no money down) was on second or third homes that were to be flipped for a quick profit.
I don't know...However, the second home market is fairly small. For example, according to DataQuick about 3% of homes sales in CA last year were for 2nd homes...But I assume if someone was in financial distress that they's let their 2nd home go first.
But thinking about it, I'd assume that the majority of foreclosures happening now are people that never should have gotten a loan in the first place...And I would also assume that they only could get one loan...But like I say, I don't know.
I have known some very well off people who simply let a home go w/o being concerned about their credit report...If you are worth enough I guess you don't have to worry about your FICO???...Doug

Verbatim Text Of Federal Reserve's Interest Rate Decision
.
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The following is the verbatim text of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision, released Wednesday, May 9.
The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to keep its target for the federal funds rate at 5-1/4 percent.
Economic growth slowed in the first part of this year and the adjustment in the housing sector is ongoing. Nevertheless, the economy seems likely to expand at a moderate pace over coming quarters.
Core inflation remains somewhat elevated.
Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Voting for the FOMC monetary policy action were: Ben S. Bernanke, Chairman; Timothy F. Geithner, Vice Chairman; Thomas M. Hoenig; Donald L. Kohn; Randall S. Kroszner; Cathy E. Minehan; Frederic S. Mishkin; Michael H. Moskow; William Poole; and Kevin M. Warsh.

Hey Spike...feel free to copy the above for your new avatar
I know that Runner did not like what I had to say about his Foreclosure Investment Idea a few months ago...I hope my statements were not contributory to his quitting the Forum...But, I was telling it like it is...Take it or leave it...Believe me or not...That is anyone's perogative.
My recommendation to anyone who thinks they can buy low and sell high in Real Estate is...Wait another 12-18 months...And even then you may have to wait up to 7 yrs before your investment REALLY pays off.
Housing prices are not a bargain...yet...But they will be once the inventory overloads...like it did in '94-'95.
I'm no expert in every geographical area...But patience (and timing) will pay off once again IMO.
Now, if you just have to get in now...I recommend looking into apartment buildings...Those Foreclosed people have to go somewhere...IMO, that will keep rents fairly stable(in L.A. anyway)...and then they will go up later...Rent Controls are being eased now and the Landlord may once again be King or Queen out West anyway.

I bet it woulda been...except I didn't do that...The ships were repositioning to start the Alaska cruises...We saw that last July so we hopped the Princess Sapphire Princess that had just come off a 29 day cruise from Australia to LA on its way to Vancouver to start the Alaska season...We were only on for 4 night w/ 1 stop in Victoria...But we got an UNBELIEVABLE DEAL on a Mini-Suite...So we couldn't resist...Spent 2 nights in Vancouver and flew home this evening.

Well, I figured that if I cried BEAR long enough...One day I'd be right.
Actually, shortly after I declared myself a BEAR, the technicals, as I interpret them anyway, turned against me...Now that I reflect back, I shoulda taken a small loss on QID and waited...But I just kept thinking bad news would drop the market...But it certainly has been resilient...People may be coming to their senses now???...At least hopefully.
But all was not lost...On 21 closed CwH trades the last 4 weeks I made $$$ on 17 of them and lost on 4 of them...Another one is still 1/2 in play and lookin' good (CAS)...Anyway, I've made more on those trades by a decent margin vs. how much I'm down on QID...
Let's see how our CwH's do in a downtrend...I will be more cautious...Best, Doug

Doug...how do you figure your returns on your 100 list? Over what period of time and how are substitutions factored in?
I don't calc it...It is done independently by others.
Here is my understanding:
At the beginning of the year all stocks are taken at the open (in the top 5 or 10)...Then the avg. % gain/loss is reported for the week.
The following week (and subsequent weeks) are calc'd that if a stock is new the following week then you use Monday's open...If it is a repeat then you use the previous Friday's close etc...I think the results are compounded.
The problem is (although it is a fair comparison...and they compare against other lists that I'm not at liberty to reveal too) is that in the real world nobody knows which ones will be dropped for the following week until after Friday's close...I could run my IIC 100 scan for the following week in R/T 5 mins before the previous Friday close....I don't do that but even if I did there could be some after hours adjustments...And IBD sure as heck isn't gonna do it....So you can't sell at Friday's close because you don't know which ones will be dropped for next week.
My suggestion...Both lists are only a guide...There's plenty of times when I would like to manually remove some...But I don't since I offer it as a Mechanical Scan ONLY...The comparison is presented ONLY to show that people can get a better list of ideas for free than they can by paying an arm and a leg.
I can say with ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY that the IIC 100 is more forward looking than the IBD 100...I think the last few years prove that...Will it always be?...I don't know...But at least you don't have to pay me to find out...And you NEVER will.
In conclusion...All I'm trying to do is offer people some NEW IDEAS at no charge...Perhaps some day I might charge for something???...But it won't be for the IIC 100.
Thanks For Asking,
Best, Doug(IIC)

Doug, it seems like your "top five" are stocks which are in fresh breakouts or close to it, whereas the IBD top five are all extended. So, I'd say by definition, your rankings are more forward looking by definition. Is that fair to say?
Just got home...Let's see what I got stopped out of...Geez...I still have RGR and BCPC...But I got stopped out of the only one that ended green...IDEV -.41 avg.
Only about 8.50 and I'll be even on QID

Well...our scans have both liked BTJ for a while...I don't know IBD's full criteria...But I do know that they put a lot more emphasis on the past than my scan does.

I like that list Doug...got some good names on it. But can you expand on that statement that you're absolutely certain its more forward looking? Afterall, no one has future information, esp. with a mechanical scan. Do you mean that IBD uses much older data to develop their list...ie going back 5 years perhaps..is that what you're getting at?
TIA

Yes...on the historical info...But for better or worse I heavily weight projections. They may lightly weight projections, but it can't be a major factor since they list stocks that have no projections AND they list stocks that have negative projections.
I'm not at liberty to give details on individual stocks in the IBD 100...I'm sure they are just waiting for me to break their rules...But it ain't gonna happen

Go to www.russell.com/indexes and look for construction and methodology document. Better yet they may tell you everything you want to know if you call 866-787-7356. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I am surprised to find that the Russell 3000 is strictly a market cap index with no indication of company quality.
That was a good question Greb...I had not really ever looked into that...But when I read your post it reminded me (and no I'm not bashing) about one of the problems I have with IBD groups...They include a bunch of .OB's and Canadian stocks in their group ratings.

Well...I picked up my wife at the airport almost 3 hours ago...Thank God she's back from one of her many vacations w/o me.
She was gone 10 nights...I can take a week...But 10 days is a bit much for me.
However, last night and this morning I was scrambling around cleaning up the house...Did a pretty good job IMO...But not too good on purpose...If everything was SPARKLING she'd think that I don't need her...AND RIVER thinks Billy has a better sense of humor than I do!!!...Sheesh!!!...Must be a Midwest thing ;)

They basically trade the same although it is possible that there might be a cash distribution...that happened to QLD last December...paid out over $5 a share.
Some etf's offer you their top holdings...don't know how up to date they report it...try here:

Nice thing about ETF's is that you can trade the short ones in a tax account

Fed Leaves Rates At 5.25%; Still Sees Inflation Risk
The Federal Reserve on Thursday kept the federal funds rate steady as expected and signaled that it is not yet satisfied with the recent drop in core inflation to the top end of its long-assumed comfort zone.
While officials acknowledged recent price improvement and said they expect inflation to keep moderating, they said the downtrend hasn't been "convincingly" established.
They also upgraded their economic assessment, further evidence that officials aren't contemplating rate cuts in the foreseeable future, as Wall Street once hoped.
The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously to hold the federal funds rate at 5.25%, where it has stood since June of last year, a period encompassing eight meetings. Many economists expect it to remain there for the rest of the year, though financial markets still think the Fed's next move eventually will be to cut rates, not raise them.
"Readings on core inflation have improved modestly in recent months," the Fed said in a statement. "However, a sustained moderation in inflation pressures has yet to be convincingly demonstrated," it said.
Core inflation edged lower between the May and June FOMC meetings, with the Fed's preferred gauge - the price index for personal consumption expenditures excluding food and energy - running at a 2% annual rate through April, its lowest since early 2006. But a government report Thursday showing an upward revision to first quarter core PCE makes it less likely that the annual rate will dip below 2% when May numbers are released Friday.
The Fed doesn't have an official inflation target, but has long been assumed to have a comfort zone between 1% and 2% for core PCE. Yet recent remarks by officials suggest some uncertainty on whether the Fed is satisfied with the top end of that range or wants it toward the 1.5% midpoint, as Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker and Chicago Fed President Michael Moskow have said they'd prefer.
Despite the recent drop in core inflation, the "predominant" concern is that it will fail to moderate as expected, the Fed said.
Officials repeated that high resource utilization, a nod to the tight employment market, remains an inflation risk.
As expected, the Fed upgraded its assessment of the economy, saying growth has been "moderate." It repeated its forecast for "moderate" economic growth in the months ahead. Recent reports on employment and manufacturing have been largely upbeat, suggesting the economy will expand 3% or higher in the second quarter. It grew just 0.7% in the first.
The Fed continued to describe the adjustment in housing as "ongoing," which is of little surprise as both new and existing home sales fell in May, suggesting the slump in that beleaguered sector still has a ways to go.
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will have a chance to expand on the Fed's economic and interest-rate outlook when he delivers his semiannual testimony to Congress next month.
Text Of Federal Reserve's Interest Rate Decision
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The following is the text of the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates released Thursday, June 28:
The Federal Open Market Committee decided today to keep its target for the federal funds rate at 5-1/4 percent.
Economic growth appears to have been moderate during the first half of this year, despite the ongoing adjustment in the housing sector. The economy seems likely to continue to expand at a moderate pace over coming quarters.
Readings on core inflation have improved modestly in recent months. However, a sustained moderation in inflation pressures has yet to be convincingly demonstrated. Moreover, the high level of resource utilization has the potential to sustain those pressures.
Warsh.
