Doug, nothing wrong with a trail stop. I'm giving it .20 trail and when it triggeres I'm out. Chance to let on run?

19.05 is where I should get kicked out from the high..
Good luck w/ it Runner.
Problem is that I get interrupted at work...And I don't want to unexpectedly hold anything over (except my long termers) in case I miss the close. It has happened to me before.

I only used 60 min and 15 min for the set up. I don't key on 1-3 min charts anymore.. I thought it was in a 3 off the 15 min chart around 2:00.
One more trade...EGY avg 8.07
Runner
06-02-2006, 03:44 PM
I'll leave EGY alone based off 60 min chart..
Runner
06-02-2006, 03:46 PM
Doug, I see same set up for EGY around 2:00 off 15 min chart. I think that was the play. Good luck with the scalp..

Looking at several charts looks like 2:00 was the time to step in.. Anyone notice this?
Things change...Probably not many of you remember back in the 80's when WON pumped the Mutual Fund Cash Position as a good market indicator...I believed it...And it really was a good indicator IMO...He said under 8% was Bearish...But times changed and it doesn't seem to matter anymore.
The idea was that the more cash they had...The more they could go in and lift the market...Makes sense to me...But look at a 10 year chart...Obviously he doesn't mention it anymore...But times change...So I don't blame him on this one...Too bad he doesn't change many of the other antiquated CS principles:

Thanks for that list IIC!
I wanna filter that down for Creme of the Crop type qualities and do a simulated portfolio on the blog this week. I bet there are some gems in there too.
Have a nice weekend!
Thanks Spike...BTW...if you had purchased all the IIC 100 Top 10 at the open every week this year and sold at the close every week you'd be +30.89%...Still have not caught the IBD 100 Top 10 doing the same thing...I'm keeping the IBD gain under wraps until I pass them...Doug(IIC)

Hey Doug, do you mind if I run a continuing blog topic where I take your IIC 100 and filter it for a simulated portfolio system trade, similar to Creme of the Crop? I think it would perform very well and I could maybe boost traffic to either your thread here or your stockcharts page.

Have you ever wondered how many people order stuff because they trust the publication that the ad appears in?
I feel sorry for those people who blindly do that. I also think that publications that run ads should make sure that the claims in the ads are accurate...Maybe I'm too much of an idealist???
"YOU CAN PROFIT AND MAYBE EVEN CURE HEART DISEASE"..."YOU CAN MAKE A FREAKIN' FORTUNE WITH THIS...I MADE $200,000 IN JUST 14 MONTHS WITH A SUCCESS RATE OF 100%"
I'd like to see some verification on this ad's claims...If it is not true I think the claimant(advertiser) and the publishers who take money to run the ad should be held liable...What do you think???

The picks that I post have already been screened, but if you want to screen them further, that is your choice. I post the weekly results from closing price Friday to the following Friday. Maybe you could pick entry points. My thread specifies that the picks are stocks to explore, I do not offer entry / exit points. I just thought it would be a fitting exercise because Doug compares his picks to IBD often, and my picks are solely taken from IBD. I try to screen for the creme of the IBD crop. It's up to you, but I post the screen results each weekend that I am able to do so.

We'll make it an IBD/Peanuts combo vs IIC/Spike combo competition hehe Winner gets weekly bragging rights lol
For my Parabolic blog (http://spikefader.awardspace.com/parabolicstockpicks/) I have interest in doing filtering for other lists too - maybe the Barcharts 100 (http://www2.barchart.com/sectors.asp?sec=top~100~stocks.sec&level=2&title=Top+100+Stocks) and others that I can dig up that may be worth doing. I'll leave the IBD list alone I think. IIC, what other site ranked lists do you know of?

Why isn't USAP on your list?
Welcome to the Real World Benny...What happened???...Did you visit California over the weekend?...So. Cal has been consistently 1-1.2% above the National CPI for quite some time:
U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) Chairman Ben Bernanke on Monday called recent increases in inflation unwelcome and pledged to be vigilant against the rising inflation.
Why isn't USAP on your list?

TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!!!
I am very pleased to announce that the IIC 100 Top 10 has FINALLY surpassed the IBD 100 Top 10 YTD...
I've been periodically posting the YTD percentage gain you would have this year if you bot all the IIC Top 10 at the open each week and sold them all at the close each week this year.
I've known the IBD percentage all along too...But I vowed not to llet it out till the IIC Top 10 took the lead.
The IIC Top 10 was ahead till February 10th at which time the IBD Top 10 took the lead...UP UNTIL TODAY!!!
Although the IIC Top 10 is down a tad this week(less than 1%)...The IBD Top 10 dropped over 8% the last two days.
So here is the YTD:
IIC TOP 10 +29.90%
IBD TOP 10 +27.40
Let's se if they publish that in tomorrow's IBD!!!
And best of all...You don't have to pay an arm and a leg and a heart transplant for the IIC 100...Heck...It's FREE.

Great accomplishment! Besides, they use all their ANAlysts to come up the list. I'd rather have my arms and legs in tact, definitely not risking a heart transplant.

Doug, I'm curious: when you say you can't copy your posts, what method are you attempting to use? The right click, pop-up menu? As far as I know, the CTRL-C key combination works almost universally in Windows apps.
On the other hand, I have discovered that sometimes the CTRL-V key combination (paste) sometimes doesn't work in these WYSIWYG edit windows, and sometimes it does. Whenever it doesn't, though, I can still still right-click and choose Paste from the pop-up menu.

Well...I see CTRL V works...it happened so fast that it copied multiple times in a nano-second...Well that shouldn't happen either. You need better control than that. You might need to go into your Control Panel, open the Keyboard control, and reduce the repeat rate.

http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=GE&p=D&yr=3&mn=0&dy=0&id=p36897684748
I think that GE is headed south. Sure the chart shows that it is working on an ascending triangle, but it has done that several times before and broke South every time the last 10 years. No, it is a coming short, imho.

Pencils lost a few points.
Hiking equipment was trailing.
Elevators rose, while escalators continued their slow decline.
Weights were up in heavy trading.
Light switches were off.
Mining equipment hit rock bottom.
Diapers remained unchanged.
Shipping lines stayed at an even keel.
The market for raisins dried up.

And batteries exploded in an attempt to recharge the market.
I heard also that autos crashed while airlines were flying. Baking soda and vinegar continued showing volatility. TV's and radios are trading in a channel; the volume was very low on amplifiers. And railroads are a good momentum play, especially when they're going downhill.

OK Peanuts...Ya got me to thinkin'...When was it???
So I'm scatchin' my head and all of a sudden I came up with a brainstorm...Here is a site that allows you to figure it out:
http://unicorn.us.com/advdec/
Formula is simple...Just take A-D=? Add up ? for 30 days and divide by 30...That will give you the average...If it is below -300 on the issues...it means we are oversold...Can use the same principle on vol. using 45 as OS.
I prefer to use 5/10/12 days...But that's because I normally have a short term outlook...Doug(IIC)
PS: Believe it or not I used to track the 5/10/12 in .xls using this site years ago...Until I found the charts.

Oop's...I screwed up...up don't divide by 30...you just add them all up...some will be positive and some will be negative.
Then on the 31st trading day you delete the first day and include the 31st day...you do that day after day and plot the line...Doug

Thanks Doug. It's too bad that there isn't an easy way to look back at the history of the trend line. Is there a place, in your infinite wisdom, that tracks the A/D number over time?
Also, this works well on the overall market- what about individual stocks? How good is the indicator short term and long term?
You're so smart.

I don't think it is so great long term...I seem to remember an article in Tech Analysis Of Stocks and Commodities that showed the long term A/D is not all that helpful.
As far as individual stocks...I don't see the A/D applying all that much...Could use the Up/Down indicator I guess...Doug

Doug,
I notice electricity is one of the few showing a positive for all time increments , although not a large one. Gas , oil , coal have all had a nice run and electricity is overdue for a big move. In my area , heating an all electric house was cheaper this winter than gas or oil. That's the first time in memory it's happened. If this is true how do we figure the best play ? Will it be the electric producers , suppliers , equipment manufacturers ? I'll have to do some homework on this. Thanks for the interesting list.

I really don't know...But the normal way to produce electricity is by burning natural gas to run turbines...you can also run them on diesel fuel. As alternatives you can create electricity via solar, water and wind...I even took a nice tour of the old San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant in the 80's.
I have always thought of utilities as defensive...almost as much as food...But times change.
For example...My Grandfather was a stock broker...He died 22 years before my Grandmother...She lived on mostly dividends from utility stocks they owned for those years...But like I said...times change...Doug
Edit PS...I still think the cos. that supply the equip. are the best bets...Remember the California Gold Rush circa 1849...How many of the miners made it???...Not many...Who made out???...The guys who sold picks, pans and shovels...Because they all needed them.
Watching me eat chicken is very exciting....

Doug, you forgot to mention Coal fired Power plants.... Southwestern VA is only "two hoots and a holler" away from West VA coal country.... The coal industry is pretty hot right now.... I know this because my company supplies parts to two West VA based coal mining machinery manufacturers.... We also manufacture/supply Trackwork Components to the Railway industry. Both sectors of my business are booming (and growing).... The Railroads benifit as they haul the coal to the Power Plants.
My dad owns a ton of PGN and DUK stock.... He retired from CPL which was later bought out by PGN.
How about these industry groups?:
Railroads
Suppliers to Railroads
Coal producers
Mining Machinery mfgr's
Electric Utilities
Now we need some tickers to investigate.

Un-Freakin' Believable
After seeing the hits IFO and GIGM took this past week, I was sure the IIC Top 10 would drop below the IBD Top 10 YTD...I didn't even wanna look.
But it didn't happen...I'm not the one who tracks the YTD performance...A good guy at another forum does it along w/ some other lists.
Well...He just sent me the standings...The IIC Top 10 is still ahead +17.19% vs. +13.64% YTD.
This assumes that you bot all of the Top 10's at the open on the first trading day of each week and sold them all at the close of the last trading day each week this year.
IBD's high this year was +45.67% and the IIC high was +34.45% both at the close on Cinco de Mayo.
Been a rough time for both lists since then...But the IIC Top 10 has been ahead since a week ago last Tuesday.
Just goes to show you though, that it has not been a good 6 weeks for us MoMo People...Best...Doug(IIC)

In other words, holding them through the weekends as well?
Doug, do you ever calculate the gains based on holding the individual stocks until they drop from the top 10? In other words, holding them through the weekends as well?
No...as a matter of fact I don't do any tracking. A guy at another forum which I dropped out of several months ago does the tracking...But it is a good idea...Thanks for volunteering...You can find every IIC 100 list back to the beginning at http://MrBreakout.com

Doug,
I'm a slow learner and would like to make a fortune from the IIC 100 or top 10 . Can you tell me again what would be the major difference between your list and IBD's ? For example can you tell me why any 1 specific IBD stock wouldn't qualify for yours. Thanks.

Billy...Unfortunately I don't know the criteria that IBD uses. One thing though...It appears that they do not include stocks under $15...This week, 31 of of the IIC 100 are under $15.
Also, I don't use an EPS percentile ranking...In fact I don't even have a program to calculate EPS percentile. However, I do have min. criteria on the latest quarter EPS increase and I use EPS projections. Apparently IBD does not use projections...Or if they do they are not heavily weighted.
That is the reason that ERS never appeared on the IIC 100...I could not find any projections...Now, maybe IBD could if they even use them???
Of course I do not have access to all the data that IBD does...But then again...I don't pay for the data I use to create the IIC 100...It pays to have nice friends.
Now...I'm not suggesting that the IIC 100 are by any means all good stocks...But they meet some minimum fundamental criteria...Best thin to do is check to see which one(s) are technically ready to move...And even though Spike picked a bad week to start analyzing the IIC 100...His analyses should be quite helpful in that respect over the long run...Click IIC Filter below in my signature for Spikes Blog...Best, Doug(IIC)

Doug,
I think IBD does use earnings projections in their under 10.00 category. They have columns that can be sorted in descending rank for last quarter eps % change , next quarter eps % change , and annual eps % change . They don't really explain it and I don't think they rank over 10.00 stocks that way , but then they're so secretive they do themselves more harm than good.

As a matter of fact they do if they are available...If they are not available I don't use them for the IIC 100 at all....But they still list stocks w/o projections...So they must not put a whole lot of weight on them IMO.
I have a question...How do you know that?...I thought you didn't subscribe?
Now...Is it possible that they started to use that on their under $10 list because I do???...They may have had their IBD 100 list before I had the IIC 100 List...But the IIC Top $10 Under $10 has been around longer than the IBD Top Rated Under $10 List.

A lot sites had it wrong. But if anyone owned it and didn't know it had split I would think that they would check the news before they sold...Heck, they would have thought they were down 50% at the open...How much more could they have thought they were going to lose in the time it would take to check?

I was watching OMNI yesterday. Looks like it's up .11 premarket. Poorman placed into his model recently plus the VTP indicators are positive.
MED has bounced back to Monday's opening price.
As of about 2:30 this afternoon, Doug's Top Ten are showing an average gain of 2.66%. Most impressive, considering what a sucker Doug is. The only two in the red are MED and IFO. EZPW has taken the lead with a gain of 9.94%.

Doug,
How much of an effect do you think the hedge funds have on market volatility vs. 15 years ago?
---------billyjoe
A lot, I think the term Hedge Fund is a bit hazy though...at least in my mind.
One thing to consider is the amount of money in 401k type plans...At one time only very large cos. had these types of plans...But with the advent of the Cookie Cutter plans in the 90's it allowed smaller cos. to easily have such plans...That has brought a lot of money into the markets too....Doug(IIC)
FWIW...Just looked at some past results:
The IBD Top 10 was green this week...the previous 6 weeks it was only green 2x.
The IIC Top 10 was green this week...the previous 6 weeks it was only green 1x.
In the 8 weeks leading up to Friday May 5th the IBD Top 10 was green 7x and the IIC Top 10 was green all 8x.
Interesting to note though that on May 5th the IBD Top 10 was +45% and the IIC Top 10 was +35%....Now it is IIC +23% and IBD +20% YTD.
When I first started the IIC 100 a couple of years ago it was an attempt to figure out the IBD 100 criteria...Didn't ever figure it out and yes, there are some major differences; e.g. IIC 100 accepts stocks which are under $15 (Usually 20-30% on the list are) etc...But it appears that we are both looking at the same type of stocks.
During the day when I check the lists they are invariably mostly green or red on both lists...Doug(IIC)

have a friend he and I thought he and I would give It a try. I really appreciate your reply.
I didn't explain the WHY...
These guys certainly do a lot of advertising...Barron's, IBD etc...Full pages too...Big Bux...Anyway, they periodically offer a free week which I have taken advantage of several times. I also downloaded all their pix/results going way back...Unfortunately I recentley deleted them...But if I find them again I will let you know.
Near the end of last year and during the first couple of months this year I know a few who subscribed...They raved about how great it was...But didn't everybody do great during that time frame?
Those people started regretting the $$$ spent along about the end of March...Well, my fortunes didn't start going in reverse till mid May.
I never really took the time to analyze the whole Gorilla system....But think about this...What if I told you to Buy any IIC Top 10 stock if it goes up at least 1% on at least 1.5x ADV...Think you'd do well? I think so...Same concept IMO.
Best, Doug(IIC)
Well...I've certainly got egg on my face...Maybe Homer and Rob are right...I'm just a Sucker...
All year I've been saying that the IIC vs. IBD race was based on buying 1 share of each of the Top 10's at the open on the first day of the trading week and selling at the close on the last trading day of the week.
Now, I'm not the one who tracks the results...But when I saw Rob's post about the IIC Home Version I said to myself..."IIC...Are you some kind of sucker?...That's not what this other guy says for last week"
So I snapped a pic this morning of Rob's post and sent it to this guy who tracks it...Ends up that he doesn't track 'em that way.
He takes the close on Friday to the close on the following Friday if they were on last week's list...He uses the open on Monday only if it is a stock that is added to the lists...He uses equal $$$ amounts rather than 1 share each and he deducts $.01 share for each share necessary on each of the 10 stocks on each list.
What a sucker I've been for 6 months...LOL
I'm very sorry about this...But we can all thank Rob for raining on my parade...But, at least the guy is comparing the two lists Apples For Apples...So I'm still winning YTD..."Lil Sucker IIC"

lol ain't that life; sucker punched when ya least expect it.
Oh, and hey! one must be careful with only recording 1 share. It's not very accurate. Try it. Same entry points, equal set dollar amount invested (share number will be different for each stock right) and then try it for each stock only 1 share. The % figures aren't even close.

no it won't. they release "key financial data" quarterly, which is basically only what they want to release. they'll likely tell you how much money CECT is making, but not XING proper.
they are, however working towards improving the transparency, and will (hopefully) start giving better quarterly data (including EPS) in Q3 this year.
I expect the stock to stay in this range or even drop after a very rosy report today. but you never know, and I've quit guessing, so I'm just holding my 2% until the cows come home on this one.

My laptop computer is not a Dell, but I do often leave it on when I leave the house for hours at a time. Since reading that I may have to change that habit.
I'm running 4 Dell laptops. Two at home and two in the office. When I'm home they are on from the time I get up to when I go to sleep. That's easily 17 to 18 hours a day. In the office trailer I turn it on at 7-7:30 am an ithey're on until 4:30 - 5 pm. One of them is 4 years old, the second is about 2 and the two in the trailer are since this past January. New had a problem with them regarding anything like that. Although I very seldom use them on battery. The two in the trailer are wireless an my internet provider is through a verizon wireless card. Never had a problem.

I believe there is a flaw in your V/R ratio formula . For instance , Homer has an outstanding V/R of 15.5 yet you stated in peanuts' thread that anything above 20 is outstanding. Don't you mean anything below 20 is outstanding ?

I'm sorry Doug, did you say that there's a forest over there? If so, I can't see it through all those trees...
I would rather have 1000 views and 1000 responses... with a V/R of 1... wouldn't everyone that reads it find the thread provocative??? I think less than 20 is better.
Chuck Norris built my deck... All that I gave him was a steel beam and several trees. He brought no tools with him.

No No No!!!...You and Billy have your priorities screwed up...
Lets say you have 500 posts on your thread and you posted all of them...Now lets say in your scenario of a V/R of "1" being the ultimate you also had 500 views....500/500= 1....That would mean that you were the only one who ever read your posts...Heck, you could just email all your posts to yourself instead of posting...LOL...IIC

New-Home Sales Rise In May
June 26, 2006 - Sales of new single-family homes rose 4.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted, annual rate of 1.23 million units in May from a downwardly revised number in the previous month, according to figures reported by the U.S. Census Department today.
“If the sales gain in today’s report holds true, it’s likely due at least partly to the extra efforts that builders are making to attract the many potential buyers who are still out there,” noted David Pressly, president of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and a home builder from Statesville, N.C. “Many are stepping up incentives or trimming prices to help maintain sales volume.”
“That said, the May sales number seems a bit too good to be true, especially in view of the wide confidence intervals around these statistics. Furthermore, the latest results of NAHB’s builder surveys indicate weaker demand for homes coinciding with higher interest rates, deepening affordability issues and a retreat of investors/speculators from the market,” added NAHB Chief Economist David Seiders. “We don’t think the cooling process for housing is over yet, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a downward revision to May’s numbers as well as some decline in coming months.”
Three out of four regions posted gains in the Census figures for new-home sales in May. The South had the strongest gain, of 6 percent, followed by the West’s 5.3 percent increase and the Midwest’s 2.7 percent gain. Sales fell nearly 8 percent in the Northeast.
Meanwhile, the inventory of new homes for sale declined slightly in May to 556,000 units, equivalent to a 5.5-month supply at the current sales pace.

DJ RSA Security Says In Talks Regarding Potential Strategic Transaction
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
Shares of RSA Security Inc. (RSAS) were halted early Thursday following a report in the New York Times that the company is close to being sold in a deal with either EMC Corp. (EMC) or another undisclosed bidder.
The Bedford, Mass., developer of online security technology issued a statement shortly after the opening bell, responding to the report by acknowledging it is in talks with parties about a potential strategic acquisition but that no definitive deal has been reached.
RSA added that it won't make any further announcements regarding its sale process unless a specific transaction is approved by its board and it has entered into a definitive agreement.

My companies 2nd quarter sales will surpass Q2 "05" by over 30%.... Looks like my backlog has stabilized and flattened out. I'm looking for it to start to fall off a bit, I can just sorta "feel it" on the horizon.... I've seen some sectors (customers) slowing.... Mining (coal) and Railway industries are booming though.

I said "sales" were up dude.... Profits are another story.heh heh
As a privately held Corp. I have been chewing up the profits by funding my recent expansion out of cash flow. Remember as the only stockholder, my financial statements only need to make me happy.... My banker really hates that too....lol.... Of course he just wants to lend me more money. I nicknamed him "Milburn Drysdale" a few years ago and the other fellas at the bank call him that now too.... jejeje

yep, yep. bet you're glad you got out before the EPS did...
sorta wish I'd done the same, but I do feel better now about lightening up on my XING position last year. it's easier to stomach these dips when it's only 2% vs 10% of your port. I'm willing to tolerate it because I know that eventually the 20%+ growth will win out and the stock will find it's way back to higher highs again.

Possible I guess...But for those who think that I think I think I know it all...Here is a screwup I made in the last coupla years...Bot ZIXI at approx. 17.05...went up to 18.50 on some bogus MSFT news...I coulda easily gotten out around 13-14ish...But since it was not a large $ trade I decided to take a flyer on all the hype I read...I finally cashed it out at just about 2 bux last year...We all screw up...Best to only DT or maybe ST on news...Doug(IIC)

Part of a recent post I made at another forum:
Market is not really ready to go yet...In fact, my gut tells me there will be some ups and downs this summer. I think we are looking at a nice run starting about the beginning of October...I would like to see the Fed rate up to 6% by year end and stall...Be nimble and look for stocks w/ increased guidance in earnings season coming up along w/ some nice technical patterns...Or better yet combine them w/ short term group movement...IIC

Doug, I like LIFC as it hit my scans last night. I’d wait for the pullback first.
Here is what I like about it:
Stock gaps up and consolidates
Stock currently accelerating out of base
Look to go long on pull back
Similar traits as ABAX

Doug,
Am anxiously awaiting your new site. In the meanwhile I can't find the link you had to the site of various stock lists including your own . A question that you'd probably know the answer. If you were to take a universe of say 1000 stocks and make a weighted alpha list of the top 100 and another from the same universe with the top 100 at or nearest to 52 week highs, how much overlap would you have ? I'm not knowledgeable enough to do it myself. Thanks

You mean Spike's site? It is on my post of the IIC 100 ...Parabolic Stock Picks...But it is temporarily down at the moment.
I don't follow Alpha so it is not in my Database criteria. But you can find some Alpha rankings at Barcharts http://www2.barchart.com/sectors.asp?sort=3&sec=top~100~stocks.sec&level=2&title=

Geez...using the open instead of the Friday close was a killer...EZPW +13.69% today and I only get credit for 1.04%. Now I understand why that other guy figures it the other way. he figures that if it was on last week's list then you use Friday's close...If it is new on the list then you use Monday's open...But that is a tough call because someone who owned it on Friday would not know if a stock was going to be on the following week's list until Saturday morning.
Oh well...Doug(IIC)

The Security Council is expected to meet at 10 a.m. (1400 GMT) to take up the matter, according to a spokesman for the French mission to the U.N. White House: N Korea Missile Launches Are 'A Provocation'
The administration of President George W. Bush said Tuesday that North Korea's firing of missiles was "a provocation" but not an immediate threat to the U.S.
"It is a provocation," said a senior administration official, who spoke only on condition of anonymity.
"The North Koreans have again clearly isolated themselves," White House press secretary Tony Snow told reporters, adding that Bush has been in consultation with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.

Fitch Analyst: S Korea A+ Sovereign Rating Stands For Now

N Korea Official: Invitation To US Envoy Hill Still Valid
North Korea's invitation to U.S. nuclear negotiator Christopher Hill to come to Pyongyang is still valid, Han Song Ryol, deputy chief of North Korea's mission to the U.N. in New York, said Wednesday. Japan: 'Sternly Protests' N Korea Missile Test-Launches
Tokyo has "strongly protested" the move by North Korea to test-launch missiles Wednesday, Japan's chief government spokesman said.
"North Korea has gone ahead with the launch despite international protest," Abe said. "That is regrettable from the standpoint of Japan's security, the stability of international society, and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."
He said Tokyo "sternly protested" the launches.

I thought Kenneth Lay would have died in a Houston slum especially after his wife's tearful "we've lost everything" quote , but all American boy that he was , he pulled himself up by the bootstraps , paid the bail money and died in a beautiful vacation home in Aspen , leaving untold millions in other real estate holdings.

Peanuts XWG Looks good .good luck. Also I like your quote ....and another for you "A man who has no vices.....has no virtues" Abe Lincoln !
I like that quote; Abe Lincoln is one of my heros. His perseverence is to be admired to this day.
The quote that I have is from my father. He actually said that to his boss one time when his boss told him, "I never make mistakes" Actually, what my dad said in response was this, "Well, you know what they say about people who never make mistakes, don't you"
boss said, "no"
dad said, "it's because they never do anything"
His boss went silent and my dad walked out of the room. He was not fired because he was desperately needed at the job. He eventually left to start his own business. When he left, his old company began to have major problems and they recently sold everything on the cheap to some vultures after years of running at 20% capacity and at a loss.
I'm not sure if that was an original by my dad, or not, but I like it and the story behind it.

The volume was not high enough.
The criteria to make the MoMo List is:
Relative Strength(RS) must be in the Top 5% of my database of 5500 stocks...My RS database does not necessarily match others, due to the number of stocks in other's databases, mine goes from 1 - 100 and the treatment of IPO's but it is very close since it is a basic formula.
Close up at least 2%
Volume must be at least 1.5x ADV

the one to be able to read charts, however I felt that GWR was a CwH pattern but when I asked NB his take on GWR he sees a double top. Looks like we all read charts differently. What say you?
Here is an interesting one to consider short term:

the one to be able to read charts, however I felt that GWR was a CwH pattern but when I asked NB his take on GWR he sees a double top. Looks like we all read charts differently. What say you?
Here is the basic brief explanation I use for a Double Top:
Double Top
A reversal pattern whereby a top is formed on high volume, followed by a correction of at least fifteen percent, subsequently followed by a second top (within three percent of the first) on lower volume. Tops should be at least a month apart, and the reversal is confirmed when the second correction crosses the valley of the first correction.
Now in this case I could see where it already went thru a Double Top pattern earlier although the previous tops were not a month apart...but I don't see it on the current pattern...although it could well end up as a Double Top if it keeps falling...It bounced off the 20ema on Friday(32.60 right now)...that was encouraging...but I'd have to wait till it starts moving up on vol.(If it does) before I'd consider it.
I'm no expert on Double Tops..So maybe NB could respond here and explain???...Perhaps I am missing something. Also, I would not call any of the ones I posted "Classic" Cup w/ Handles...Thanks...Doug(IIC)

Ray,
A cup with handle or a double top--how do we know the difference? The formation is the same. We cannot tell the difference until the formation matures. If it explodes higher, cup with handle. That's why Wm. O'Neill says "wait for the breakout." If it continues to drop lower, like GWR is currently doing, it was a double top, and when the neck breaks, lookout for a vicious cutthroat drop into the $17 range. As I mentioned before, the PnF already says, "the party is over. $17 is in the cards for GWR." I would not take that lightly. Look at these charts and see what I mean:
Double top looks like this:
http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/2294/chart10qn.gif (http://imageshack.us)
Cup with handle looks like this:

Ray,
You like GWR? If so, here's a chart that might help you find a decent entry if you really believe GWR is a cup with handle forming instead of a double top.
There are the next three supports shown by the arrows. It ought to bounce on one of these. But something else that will help is the STOs circled below. A major bottom is put in when the STO crosses below or at the 20. I marked the most recent bottom with a "1". A continuation bottom is marked on the chart with a "2." You will note that the STO crossed above the 20 line there.
If you believe that GWR is going higher, I would buy the next cross of the STOs, which should be at or near one of those three support lines drawn.

LOL Peanuts...you know me well:
The Cup with Handle is a bullish continuation pattern that marks a consolidation period followed by a breakout. It was developed by William O'Neil and introduced in his 1988 book, How to Make Money in Stocks (http://store.yahoo.com/stockcharts/howtomamoins.html).
I can EASILY prove that is not true...I gotta book right here dated 1962 by Jiler that describes the exact same pattern..Doug

My older brother and I went to the drive-in movie with our cousins. I drank two 12-oz. Pabst Blue Ribbons and two 16-oz. Budweisers, which was enough to slog a 14-year-old pretty good. I recall multiple trips to the urinal that evening and barfing in the parking lot. I must've been a sight. The movie was Vanishing Point (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067927/). There were no girls involved (thank goodness), but at least I had the presence of mind not to puke on my britches.

Since we are talking about puking stories, this one happened to me back in the early 80's. It was New Years Day and 4 of my buddies an myself were going skiing up at Hunter Mtn. in NY state. I had been out almost all night and they picked me up around 4 am an I had just gotten home with my wife and had no sleep at all. I wasn't exactly drunk but had my share. I tried to sleep on the trip up to Hunter, which was about a 4 hr. drive, but they had to stop on the road several times to let me puke. So we get there and start skiing but I was feeling pretty bad and around 11am one of my buddies and myself happened to get on the quad lift with two beautiful blonde chicks. We rode to the top and skiied down with them the first time an everything was ok. I was married at the time and wasn't about to cheat on my wife but the one chick was really interested and was one of those people who had to put their hands on you when they talked to you. She was pretty interested but I was really feeling bad. On the second trip up the mountain, the wind was blowing into our faces pretty good an it was snowing pretty hard, she was talking to me an I started to feel like I was going to puke an it started to come up my throat. You know how you get a mouth full of it and try to keep it in but the pressure blows your mouth open anyway an it goes all over the place. I tried to turn away but it just blew off out in front of the lift before I could turn away from her and the wind blew it right back all over the four of us. She took a direct hit all over the front of her body and ski suit. Needless to say it got very quiet and she started to cry and really go off on me. It was embarrassing to say the least. When we got to the top my buddy an I just skiied away like nothing had happenned. The chick was still screaming at me when I got off the lift.

I was going to start a list of the movies with the best puking scene and had about 4 in mind and forgot to write it down , however I believe the best was in Problem Child 2 with John Ritter at an amusement park when the problem child takes control of the spinning ride. It's hard to find an unedited version but well worth seeing if you get the chance.

Since we're talking about ski lift stories and hijacking Doug's thread while doing it: We went skiing at a place called Mountain High in Wrightwood, CA. It was right around 1980, give or take a year. It was just before 1:00 p.m., and we were going up for the first run after lunch. Suddenly our chair started bouncing up and down pretty strongly for no apparent reason. I thought someone in another chair must be horsing around, but when I looked around I saw nothing unusual, just other people looking around equally puzzled. We never figured out what that was until we were driving home that evening. The news came on the radio and said that there had been an earthquake that day shortly before 1:00 p.m. I thought, "Cool. How many people can say they felt an earthquake while on a ski lift?" And then I thought, "Sheesh, what if that had been 'the big one'?"

LOL! In n Out Burger ... people here in Virginia just don't know how good they are. We had something similar here, a little drive-through chain called Rally's. They were pretty good, but just not the same as In n Out. Anyway, they all closed up shop. But whenever I go to So. Cal. I simply MUST get a Tommy's Burger!
Edit: ... or two or three Tommy's Burgers, and of course, I also have to grab about a half dozen of those chiles gueritos (sp?), those really hot yellow chiles they have. Man, now my mouth is watering for that stuff.

They were pretty good, but just not the same as In n Out. Anyway, they all closed up shop. But whenever I go to So. Cal. I simply MUST get a Tommy's Burger!
There is a Rally's near me...It was good the first 2 years it opened but then it went down the tubes...Of course, Tommy's is a Classic...But the VERY BEST is Prince's on the Katy Fwy in Houston.
I'm going to Houston Monday as a matter fact...Not sure if I'll be able to squeeze in a Prince's but I'll try...Doug

Doug,
You'll be missed. Have a good trip.
The markets open the same time no matter where you are. Actually, from my perspective, they open at an earlier time when I'm in central timezone... you California boys always get things messed up...:p

BTW...I had lunch at the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo today...If you can eat a 72 oz. steak plus baked potato, salad, shrimp cocktail and a roll in less than 1 hour...IT's FREE!!!
Bet Lye does that all the time...LOL
Needless to say I didn't try it...I had the 12 oz. Ribeye Ft. Worth Cut with onions and mushrooms and a side of chili, side of beefsteak tomatoes w/ onions, 2 rolls and 2 Pepsi's...It wasn't the best steak I ever had...but then I didn't order from the prime menu...But it was pretty good for under 30 bux including tip.
Interesting place though...slot machines...horse stable in case you ride up for chow...Only 3 people have won the free steak this month so far...But the restaurant tour guide (I'm serious...it's that big to have a tour guide) told me that the record is 9 1/2 minutes.

Doug,
I want to ask you the same question I posed to Dr. Jack. AMD has announced they are buying ATYT for 20.46 in a combination of stock and cash. For most of today you could have purchased ATYT for 19.46. Would the point gain be worthwhile to you or would it tend to tie up funds too long that could be put to better use? Thanks

Let me repeat what I said to J over on his thread earlier this month.."Things are not always as they seem" (Or something like that)...See his thread re: GFCI...buyout for 2.25 sh...Then why did it close at .19 today?
I really don't know about either deal...But if this deal is worth 20.47...why didn't the pros drive it up near there?...I don't know...and since I don't know I wouldn't buy it based on the headlines.
I believe there is much more to these deals than we read in News Briefs and PR's...I'd suggest digging in a little further before jumping in for a possible 5%.
Best, Doug(IIC)

You're talking merger arbitrage (aka risk arbitrage).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbitrage
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_arbitrage
//
In the 1980s, risk arbitrage became common. In this form of speculation, one trades a security that is clearly undervalued or overvalued, when it is seen that the wrong valuation is about to be corrected by events. The standard example is the stock of a company, undervalued in the stock market, which is about to be the object of a takeover bid; the price of the takeover will more truly reflect the value of the company, giving a large profit to those who bought at the current price—if the merger goes through as predicted. Traditionally, arbitrage transactions in the securities markets involve high speed and low risk. At some moment a price difference exists, and the problem is to execute two or three balancing transactions while the difference persists (that is, before the other arbitrageurs act). When the transaction involves a delay of weeks or months, as above, it may entail considerable risk if borrowed money is used to magnify the reward through leverage.
//
//
In a cash merger, an acquirer proposes to purchase the shares of the target for a certain price in cash. Before the acquisition is completed, the stock of the target trades below the purchase price. An arbitrageur buys the stock of the target and makes a gain if the acquirer ultimately buys the stock.
In a stock for stock merger, the acquirer proposes to buy the target by exchanging its own stock for the stock of the target. An arbitrageur will then short sell the acquirer and buy the stock of the target. After the merger is completed, the target's stock will be converted into stock of the acquirer based on the exchange ratio determined by the merger agreement. The arbitrageur delivers the converted stock into her short position to complete the arbitrage.

Doug, you're pretty good at this.
I've been keeping an eye on RAVN and I think you might be able to do some trading in and out with that stock as well. It has nice moves each day and trades in a fairly predictable pattern.
I've been mostly on the short side since 1st week in June, but it seems that there is upside pressure going into earnings.
Good Luck

For newbies: My MoMo (Momentum) list consists of stocks in the Top 5% of my Relative Strength (RS) Database of 5500 equities that closed up at least 2% on at least 1.5x Average Daily Volume.
My RS numbers may not be exact when compared to other's because we may have a different number of stocks in our databases, the treatment of IPO's and the fact that my database goes from 1-100...But most are very close as the RS formula is basic...Doug(IIC)
