This is a copy of a post I made last May 27th...Thought it might be appropriate on this thread...I made some up and I stole the rest:

IIC's Sayings To Live By:

Expect the best...but be prepared for the worst

Never dwell on what might have been

The smartest people ask the most questions

The smartest people only need to know one thing...who to call to get the answers

When you are wrong, you are wrong...admit it and get on with it

Let the other person save face ...unless they are a real jerk

Never feel sorry for yourself

Worry takes more effort than action

Never be intimidated

Never be afraid of change

Make your boss look good

Be more prepared than the person sitting across the table

The way to come up with good ideas is to come up with a lot of ideas

Remember your customer's kids names

Value diversity

Try to make the other person feel important

Don't worry if you miss your exit on the freeway...there's another one just around the bend

Never bring up a problem unless you have a solution

No matter how bad it seems...just remember somebody has it worse

Don't dish it out if you can't take it

Never forget anything

It is hard to believe that a person is telling the truth when you know you would lie if you were in their place

When a person tells you that they will think it over and let you know...you know

He who burns his bridges better be a good swimmer

Get bored easily

There is always a place for the person who says "I'll take care of it"

If you can afford to buy your way out of a problem...you don't have a problem

It isn't the people you fire that make your life miserable...it's the people you don't

A good person never expects anything in return except a "Thank You"

When a telemarketer calls you...tell them that you are busy right now and ask them for their number so you can call them back

Say it with authority and people will believe you

If you find yourself in a bad situation...take immediate action

Have a good sense of humor

Hoping and wishing are excuses for not doing

99% responsibility doesn’t work

We fear the thing we want the most

The rewards in life go to those who are willing to give up the past

People would rather be right than happy

100 years from now no one will care

The one who loves the least controls the relationship

If you require someone to change…you require them to lie to you

You can get everything you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want

What you are afraid to do is what you need to do next

The best way to escape from your problem is to solve it

You can have anything you want if you give up your belief that you cannot have it

A winner says…”I Will” and a loser says I’ll Try”

Be yourself

Sorry Lye that it came out like I was taking credit for the saying. I heard it from another guy in my squad, a southerner from South Carolina whose drawl was so thick you could hardly make out what he was saying even under the best conditions, and I started using it after that whenever we were hoping for something to come thru and it usually never did. It stuck with me for all these years. I never heard my dad use the buck-waddin phrase but another guy that flew with him an always hunted with us used it with his kid and the rest of us kids pretty regularly when they would make us drive the thickest and swampiest pieces of woods in deer hunting season and we would always complain that they always made us do the hardest sections on the drives. My dad always gave the guy permission to do it if I gave him to much crap. He never did though.

That's misleading IMO. That implies that putting all of your investments in a couple of places is less risky than spreading it out among stocks, bonds, gold, cash, real estate, foreign equities, etc. Buffett has holdings in american companies and foriegn companies, silver, short dollars, airlines, tons of insurance companies, shoe makers, dairy queen, coke, sheeshhh, that's hardly a few and I'm sure I'm missing a "few".

But I do agree with his yesterday's growth opinion.

In reading many of his other quotes I get the idea that he suggests only investing in businesses you can understand. If you don't understand the business then take a pass. A "Few" holdings may be a subjective term...If you have a $100,000 portfolio maybe a few is 5...If you have a billion dollar portfolio maybe a few is 100???

When you put it like that then yes, I agree that he only has a few on a relative basis...especially considering some mutual funds a fraction of Berkshire's size have hundreds of positions.

I don't recall where you posted that response about chinese companies Doug, but you're right, there's plenty of corruption over there. In fact, now that you mention it I recall reading somewhere that 2 of the most corrupt countries in terms of business dealings are china and india. Something to do with bribes in order to win business contracts. And I assume that russia is right up there with them but that's just an assumption.
