View Full Version : A Humble Request
I'm wondering if it would be possible to clean up the language around here. One of the things I have enjoyed about this site (the whole forum) is its relative lack of profanity. I'd really hate to see that change ... well, unless it was to an absolute lack of it. :) I've noticed a marked increase lately. When I cease to enjoy coming to this site, I will cease to visit it. Maybe that means nothing to anyone, but I just thought I'd mention it anyway.

Thanks for bringin it up. Humility is non-different than one's character in my textbook. You would be surprised what one can accomplish by being just a little humble in life.

Sorry, Rob, if you're referring to my recent use of 'hell' and 'damn', I'll knock it off... I guess that not everyone appreciates the colorfullness of the entire English language, and I appologize if I've offended anyone who does not like the use of certain words. I think that there are some situations that just require a well placed and timed expletive in order to get the point across, but hey, if you don't like it, dude, I'm done. I'll just have to be more creative with my writing.

I rarely post anymore because I don't consider this a serious investor site anymore.....Louetta's Lore is the most active board and there's no investment posts....I'll take serious investment posts with or without profanity.....Sometimes a little profanity helps get the point across.
on a side note, CAMH is in breakout mode......

Jim,
Thanks for pointing out CAMH, right now. I think if there are more serious posts, the quality of the board will improve. However, someone needs to step up, start that off, and keep it going. I enjoyed your thread when you posted.

First he starts with the rules and regs with the POTW and now he's trying to clean up the vulgarities. Is this guy Elliot Ness or what. The terrible thing about it is that with never mentioning the filthy language you guys use you can slip into the type of language that Doug, Lyehopper, Webs, Peanuts and the rest of you use with such casuality. Why can't you all be more like me. Pure of heart and tongue. This is my last post with any dirty or foul language damnit. I've been clean now almost 30 seconds and it feels GOOD!!!

sorry Rob, I couldn't resist ;)
I'm a little disappointed to see after just joining this forum that there are some who feel that the board itself is not a serious investor site just because it also contains some personal messaging and humor. I've found in the short time I've been here (less than a week) that it is quite easy to sort the serious investing messages from the rest of it. Simply mousing over the topic of one of the threads will bring up a little yellow window showing the beginning of the latest message. If it's a message I have no interest in, I don't have to click on it. One can also figure out fairly easily which threads are serious and which ones aren't. If you don't like a particular thread, don't visit it. So what if it happens to be the most active thread. Again, if you don't like it, don't visit it. As for the salty language, I'm not as bothered by it as Rob but that may be because I'm a new member and haven't seen as much of it as he has. My general opinion of profanity (and if you really think about it, it's true) is that "Profanity is only a weak imitation of strength."

I'm a firm believer in just passing over what you don't want to read....Sift out the garbage Jim...I know I talk about a lot of stuff...I know you don't like it...So out of respect, I don't do that on your thread even though I enjoy reading what you have to say.
I don't know about other forums that others are in but I was in 11 at the start of the year...I've dropped 7 so far because they either dried up or everyone was arguing all the time...The other 3 I'm in have a really low number of posts too vs. just 6 months ago. This is the only one left where I can almost always find something new to read.
Robb...I've noticed a few expletives here and there...But I'd hardly say it is the norm. I agree w/ Peanuts take on this matter. I believe I usually use something like this (^%^&$ or something like this: D*mn...If that is offensive then I'm sorry, but I can't please everyone.

In my opinion the terrorists crave publicity and the war in Iraq makes them drool. The last thing they want is a new regime that will pull out of the middle east and ignore them. The head honchos aren't dying, it's their stupid followers and they could care less about life. More youngsters are being brainwashed to take their place each day.

Here are three reasons a terrorist attack won't happen on 11/6/6:
11/66 is 6, which gives you three sixes. You also can get 616 easy by mixing the numbers. Why the devil be so obvious?
Write 11/6 on a piece of paper and turn it around. It says 9/11. Wy would a terrorist attack happen on a upside down 9/11? It might be like a frown upside down, so maybe good things will happen?
It is the day before the elections. If a terrorist wants to influence our elections, he might go at it the day before. Why would a terrorist meddle in our affairs?
Rest easy on two sticks and a sixty six.
This post may have been sarcastic. It's up to you to decide.
You are such a rascal Cosmic. Are you really trying to be sarcastic? They wouldn't dare do anything on 11/6/6. That's my birthday and if they screw up my day I may have to go over there and rip out someones jugular veins.
Yeh. Today is not the day, though. Very heavy rain and winds. Going to do lots of damage to our remaining leaves.
Yeah...the wind is pretty strong. Maybe you should start a "Save The Fallen Leaves" campaign.

There are some people I've met (one in particular, who is the senior partner in a law firm I once worked for) who are academically BRILLIANT ... but who have no common sense and/or people skills. They are totally unaware of anything going on around them that is outside of whatever they happen to be focusing on at any given moment.
From a completely different perspective (which won't mean anything to those in the group who are atheist or agnostic): "What we are is God's gift to us. What we make of ourselves is our gift to God."

Hey Tatnic, Don't you think your use of profanity in this thread is a slap in the face to my friend Rob? Not only have you used profanity in this thread but you further rubbed salt in Rob's wound by capitalizing the profanity. Was it you who also rated it with one star? I'll allow you to answer these questions and even offer some sort of apology to Rob before I continue with my thoughts on this....
Some of the responses in this thread have made me sad. It's only been about a week since my brother, Rob, invited me to join this group. I was looking forward to learning a lot about the market. However, since I'm so new here, I don't know if I'll hang around if Rob quits the group over some people's apparent belief that profanity is so important that they are unwilling to give it up even after being humbly asked to refrain from using it.

Rob,
Your request is having an effect. With over 2000 members it's impossible to stop everyone from profanity and they'll always be a few who will go out of their way to cuss when it will get someone's attention. I'm thinking twice about what I say here. New-born might bring a lightning bolt down on me . Overall this is the best group I've conversed with on the net. Most of us are trying to better ourselves and in doing that will have a positive effect on the younger members such as Gwhiz and Stickytreat. Heck, even Peanuts is giving more thought before he posts. Wouldn't we all have gained from positive influences 30 or more years ago? I wish I had someone to talk stocks with as a teenager. Rob, your actions have a more positive effect than you'll ever know. We sure need you on this forum in any capacity you choose.

Maybe we should get back to my grad work. Actually I spent several hours reading about how to meditate better, my sessions lately have been very sloppy. So is my backstroke for that matter, though my eligibility is gone so it doesn't really matter. And I missed this rally. Hmm.

Louetta, grad work really does matter and it does pay off! You'd be surprised how many doors a Ph.D. opens, no matter what field it is in. It gives you instant credibility. Mine has opened up to me opportunities to serve on Boards of non-profits and other associations and really do some good. Not only that, it finally gave me the opportunity to find out "what I want to be when I grow up" as my 5th career, and the actual joy of getting up to go to work in the morning! Keep up the good work, keep the vision, and don't be discouraged easily. In the end, it will be worth a thousand or more times what you invest now.

Problem is most fail to see the bigger picture. Unless you got deep pockets or parents with deep pockets most spend several years paying the school debt off. Then many end up in a job climbing the ladder only to find out the ladder in leaning on the wrong wall. Or they fire you because they will just hire two college kids and pay them less. Or they go through a corporate restructuring and this means your job is no longer needed. They pump you up in the beginning promises promises. Yea they even give you your own office and if you’re lucky you might even have windows to stare out of. hehe Oh but I love my job life is sweet. Well if you love it so much do it for free. Tell the boss you don’t need that 100K SALLERY (intelligent term meaning “we own you’). Just thinking out loud…

Rob,
Your request is having an effect.

I wouldst opine on this subject. If I'm in a class with 100 boys, invariably 99 are perfectly well behaved and 1 is a jerk who needs to do something to get attention and can only get it by being obnoxious. I've have found it best to ignore said 100th boy. (If he follows you home you get the male swimmers to threaten him with a knuckle sandwich.)

Most people I know would be happy to pay off their loans in "several" years. The rest of its horse.. oops, sorry, no swearing. Stay away from people who tell you that effort doesn't pay off. I started swimming and it got me four years in college.
Let me set the record straight...I was not saying that one should not seek a graduate degree...Heck, I'd say a masters from Harvard is worth its weight in gold. What I was saying that "IMO" a life in Academia is not what I would want to do. But that's just me...Doesn't mean that it is not right for Louetta or anyone else here.
We have some friends that have a daughter that graduated (Bachelor's) from Penn a couple years ago...She didn't get as many job offers as she expected but she did get some...She took one with some accounting firm for $50k to start...Not bad for a 21 year old IMO.
A degree from an Ivy League school and some other schools e.g. Stanford are very valuable in the working world....Doug

I know a little about effort and to tell ya the truth I had to do what I did to eat. You would be surprised what we can do when the going really gets tough. My schooling was not formal or from the classrooms. I think if one is seeking freedom and satisfaction then business ownership is the only way to go. It takes guts when it is up to you weather you make it or not. I think Jobs suck. They never pay you what your worth. In reality they only pay you what the job is worth. Look around and see what is happening in this country!

I'm not arguing that. But I am convinced that if you get the opportunity and can spare the time out of your life you should try to milk the college opportunity not because of any material benefits later on but because of the once in a lifetime quality of life experiences you get.

Lou,
Many swimmers seem to be laid back , but they certainly are stronger than most imagine. I hope you keep up with some physical fitness activities even if swimming is over. My son got 3rd place in a sprint triathlon. The swimming portion was in Lake Erie and he was 9th out of the water out of 100 or so and that was just with a high school swimming background. He was embarrassed when a 60+ year old lady passed him in the cycling portion, but it turned out she traveled all over the U.S. and was a high placer nationally.

I'll keep it up but cycling seems to be a real problem in triathlon. The local races seem weighted towards cycling and even if you clobber people by several minutes in a 1 mile swim they make it back fast in the cycle if they have the proper background. But it would be fun to compete.

English as an undergrad. I was too young to drink, don't care for girls, enjoyed sports and within reason could eat what I wanted since I was young and got a lot of exercise.

Lou,
I agree. Lots of the contestants had years of cycling experience and it showed. My son probably enjoys cycling the most , but lost the most ground during that portion of the race. He also ran cross country for 5 years and was varsity but not spectacular and held up well in that part.

I respectfully disagree. In other forums I belong to, this is called "hijacking." When you want to talk about something completely different than what the person who started the thread wants to talk about, it's better to create a new thread than it is to hijack the topic of the original thread.

When I went to U. of Nebraska the first year the drinking age was 19...Couldn't get in bars but there were plenty of parties...When I was a Soph they lowered the drinking age in NE to 18...Now I think all states are 21.
I think you could substitute girls for guys :)
I was in sports too...Track scholarship...Plenty of food at the training table...All you can eat. I lived on campus the 1st year...Off after that...But I still went to the training table my Soph year...All you could eat 3x a day. I ripped my right hamstring when I was a Soph at a meet in San Jose, CA...I transferred to U. of HI in my Junior year because that was only one of two NCAA Div 1 schools where you didn't have to sit out a year if you transferred. But even w/ a scholarship Hawaii was expensive...Plus I couldn't get any of the classes I wanted the first semester...After 8 weeks I came back to the mainland and then went back to NE. That was it for sports and scholarships but my Grandmother picked up the tab although I did work P/T at one of the libraries off and on. Actually, working at the library was a good place to meet chicks...lol

You might be right Mary...But I don't see Rob posting anymore about this....How about some examples.
Here's my take...I like Rob...I think he's a great guy...But I also think he's being hyper-sensitive.
I do not think profanity is a problem at this forum. I moderate some small forums and I used to moderate the Yahoo Canslim StockPicks Forum that had over 2,000 members. There were certain words that I would not and do not tolerate. There are other words that may be offensive to some but that I do/did tolerate because they are words that many people use in everyday life....For those that used the words on my ban list I would send 2 warnings before I took action...At Yahho CSSP I was the judge and jury for several years...Right or Wrong.
One thing I did not tolerate was newcomer spam and posts that were derogatory towards sex, religion or race...Instant banishment.
So here we have Rob making a request. He has the right to do so...But he is not in charge here. I'm not either. He needs to direct his complaints to the people that are in charge IMO.
Personally, I do not think colorful language is a problem at this forum...But he is entitled to his own opinion. However, he has a choice...I'm sorry that he takes it so hard...But if he thinks the language at this forum is out of line then he has to make his own decision as to whether he wants to stick around. I hope he does stick around...But that's his decision...Not mine....Doug(IIC)

You are talking to the 100th guy. You're supposed to ignore him.
We don't have greeks here so there are less parties than you might think. We had all you could eat too plus free bras after freshman year which was nice.
Hey...I gotta a lot of FREE stuff...But never a FREE bra.
BTW...Did I read some of your posts right?...Did you actually get a scholarship for swimming? I thought Ivy League schools didn't give sports scholarships???
The reason I say that is because I had received a letter from Dartmouth in HS...As I recall they said they didn't offer sports scholarships but I could apply for financial aid. Well, in those days (1971) I wouldn't have qualified for financial aid...And with my grades/SAT I wouldn't have qualified to get in anyway (I was Captain of the Varsity Ditching Team in HS...lol)

When Rob first started this thread, I don't think he was being hyper-sensitive at all. He politely explained that profanity bothers him and made a humble request. I suppose you could say (as you did) that he is being hypersensitive about the response he has received. However, in response, I would say that some of the initial responses to Rob in this thread were hyper-insensitive. Is it really that difficult to give up using foul language when politely asked to do so?
While I agree, especially in light of the recent new thread about profanity begun by Karel, that there really isn't a huge problem with profanity here, if a member is bothered by it and asks others to stop, what's wrong with that? On the other hand, I do see something wrong when, after being asked to refrain from using such language, to write posts containing exactly the language that is offensive.
This can be applied to anything, not just profanity. Hypothetically speaking, imagine your friend is doing something that bothers you and you politely ask that friend to stop. How do you respond if, instead of stopping, your friend does exactly the behavior that is bothering you? My guess is that you leave. Are you then being hyper-sensitive? Or are you just removing yourself from a situation that bothers you?

I'm not putting him down...But I do not agree that profanity is a problem here...at least I fail to see it. Actually, I'm surprised at Karel's results...I didn't even think there was as much as his scan found.
I said that Rob had the right to ask...But I really think he should be directing his concerns to the people who run this forum...They are really the only ones that have any power to do anything about it anyway.
I'd like some examples...I don't even know who he is talking about?...Best, Doug

well, I can't speak for everyone and neither can you or rob, but what bothered me about his request was that it smelled of being too pushy and authoritative. If this was his site, then he can ask whatever he wants, but it wasn't even his own thread, and he was asking that the entire universe of users to conform to his beliefs..what's next, will he ask that we all start the day with prayer, or to vote a certain way? If you or rob are offended by certain language from certain posters then there is an ignore feature. Don't try to impose your will on everyone who comes to the site. And to be perfectly honest, you should be listening and reading, not posting. NOw how's that for being offensive without using profanity?

I'm not trying to speak for everyone, nor do I think Rob is, nor is anyone else that I know of. How can a request be pushy or authoritative? It's a request, not an order. The "humble request" thread is Rob's own thread. I don't know which thread you are referring to when you said it isn't his thread. As for the "what's next" comment, I generally don't pay much attention to slippery slope arguments. Making an argument that Rob may next ask everyone to start the day with prayer or tell everyone how to vote is a ridiculous giant leap and I've no idea where it came from. I am not trying to impose my will on anyone, nor is Rob. Rob humbly asked the folks to refrain from the use of profanity and stated that if this forum ceases to be fun for him, he will stop visiting it. That's imposing his will on himself and no one else. As for me, my biggest mistake as one of th newest members here was to stick my nose in to this disagreement. It would have been better for me to be silent and watch from the sidelines. However, he is my brother, so I felt the need to show my support for his point of view.
Personally, I think this discussion has gone a bit overboard. Rob is entitled to his opinion. He's also entitled to quit visiting if he wants to. Too bad 'cause I like him...But I've quit a lot of forums over the years because I didn't like the way things were going and/or handled. It was never because of profanity though.
The decision is Rob's as to whether he stays or not. But after the dialogue here I imagine he'll leave...I wish Rob all the best...Doug(IIC)

I personally start everyday with a prayer. You guys can to if you want to. Mary we know you love your brother Rob. There's nothing wrong with showing that. I hope Rob chooses to stay and bear with the limited profanity. I actually think that we are all now aware of this profanity issue and the need of some to express themselves with it's use and the others who don't find it necessary. I think this recent dialogue will in itself move us in the direction of at least trying to limit our use of it. Let's let things lay and move on to see where we go with it. We are all old enough to be able to try to coexist and to respect each other feelings on both sides of the fence.
I agree with Doug that the discussion has gone a bit overboard. Additionally, I don't feel that my $0.02 worth helped. I think it had the opposite effect.
I agree with you, too, Ski, especially the bolded portions of your above post, and I hope this will all die down. Then I can get down to the business of learning something about the stock market in a fun atmosphere. :)

Hi Mary,
I have not received your membership dues, yet. Did you read the thread, "Do you want to become a member? Read This!"
Let me know if you need the info...

Jeez, I wish you'd quit this one.

Don't listen to him Mary. The dues always go to the keeper of the POTW.

Hi Mary
Don’t listen to either Peanuts or Ski, the dues goes into mine and Gwhiz college funds.
Jeez, I wish you'd quit this one.

Sticky, Ski, you guys are going to confuse poor Mary. Look, how's this: She sends me the money then I distribute it equitably between us?
Mary, I still don't have the funds....
:p
The check is in the mail.

well, I can't speak for everyone and neither can you or rob, but what bothered me about his request was that it smelled of being too pushy and authoritative.
Tatnic.... So you think the following post was too pushy or authoritative?
I'm wondering if it would be possible to clean up the language around here. One of the things I have enjoyed about this site (the whole forum) is its relative lack of profanity. I'd really hate to see that change ... well, unless it was to an absolute lack of it. :) I've noticed a marked increase lately. When I cease to enjoy coming to this site, I will cease to visit it. Maybe that means nothing to anyone, but I just thought I'd mention it anyway.
Hmmmmm. I don't see what you mean Tatnic.
I've know Rob for many years and I never heard a curse word or off color joke proceed from his lips. He was simply stating how he feels about profanity on the forum and in my honest opinion he has taken his leave (pretty much) because of you and your lack of respect for his "humble request".
Rob's the kind of fella that would walk out in the midst of a movie or comedy performance it turned too off color. He'd walk away from a conversation at work if it turned too profane or off color. He'd leave a party if one person made him feel uncomfortable due to their in-your-face profanity. Rather than stress over it.... he'd simply remove himself from the situation.... Rob has "left the party" here for that very reason and I personally think it's a huge loss to the group as a whole.
Hey, I can cuss with the best of em Tatnic, yet I watch my mouth when I'm in Rob's company because I respect him and know he's an honorable person and loyal friend.
You owe Rob an apology for the disrespect you showed, not for your initial cursing, but for your disrespect of him in this thread AND your disrespecting his flesh and blood sister. A Virginia Gentleman would not behave the way you have.... nor spoken to her like you have. If she were my sister? I stomp your d--n A$$ into the sidewalk.

Rob:
You will be sorely missed on this board. Your POTW posts were the stuff of which legends are made.
Your comments were always welcomed, your demeanor delightful and your humor refreshing.
In the "real world" I could imagine calling you friend.
