Anyone up for a "Pick of the Year" contest?

Or maybe we already have one and I missed it???

Anyway, if anyone is interested in a Long Term Call...You can post your pick here no later than BEFORE the markets open on Monday January 9th. We will use the opening price per Yahoo on the next market "OPEN" after you pick it(Unless the price is obviously way off at Yahoo in which case I'll get it from the exchange).

I will donate a nice prize to the winner and some chintzy prizes to #2 and #3.

RULES:

Must hold all year...We will use the close on the last trading day of 2006.

I'll adjust for splits.

Dividends don't count.

Stock must be listed on NYSE, AMEX, Naz NM or Naz SC...NO Bulletin Boards or Pink Sheets. No price restriction as long as it is listed on one of those when you pick it.

In the event of a merger or takeover I will do my best to figure out the value.

If the stock is halted at the close on the last trading day of the year...YOU LOSE...No questions asked.

ETF's OK as long as they are listed as indicated above.

I will post an update about once a week.

Anyone interested???

Doug,
My pick doesn't get much publicity, that's the type of stock I'm looking for. No one loves it and nobody hates it. You might say "why would you pick that"? A little leather never hurt anyone : TLF I own it in real life and wouldn't be surprised to see it double this year.

Photon,
WFMI is a nice pick for the next week, at the very least. Pays a massive dividend--$4.30!--and the ex-date is January 11th. I like this one.

NB,

Will the div be half of that because of the split?
No, my friend. The stock is supposed to pay a divy of $4.30 per share, and the ex-date is 11 Jan 2006. "It's a deal!"

Doug,
DUH! I thought your pick of the Century was WITS. Man, I am sorry I missed that somewhere. COGT? Oh, yeah, now I remember following that dog for awhile. I think I deleted it off my screen the day it fell $10 per share . . . . :D

I guess you can say that short term trading beats this buy and hold type of thing--Doug's port proves it.

Have a great 2006!

After careful consideration, I have made my pick for 2006...

It's hip...

It's cool...

It's wild...

It's True Religion! Brand jeans that is...

Ticker symbol - TRLG

The young, hip hop crowd will be beating the door down for this companies unattractive and rediculous line of clothing.

You may be thinking to yourself, "What's so attractive about this company? What would make this friggin Vulcan think the share price will go up in 2006? What planet is he from? I need another another beer!".

Well, my human friends... Read for yourself and you may just get religion.

Who they are…
True Religion Brand Jeans was established in December of 2002 to take denim in a refreshing new direction. The Los Angeles based premium denim company has become known for its intense attention to detail: from the fashion-forward seams, to the remarkable embroidery and innovative hand-sanded vintage washes, True Religion Brand Jeans has distinguished itself as a leader in the high-end denim market for men, women and kids. The line also includes a myriad of colored corduroy pants, skirts, shirts, shorts, jackets, blazers, hoodies, T-shirts and everything in between.
Husband and wife designers, Jeffrey and Kym Lubell have combined his love of classic rock and her love of hip-hop and R&B to produce a trendsetting line made to exceed consumers’ expectations of denim apparel. Magazines including Elle, Bazaar, InStyle, NY Times, Los Angeles Magazine, Lucky, GQ, Razor, DNR, Rolling Stones, Men’s Health, Vogue, Intl’ Publications, Teen People, Teen Vogue, Star, People, InTouch, Life & Style, and US Weekly have recently featured True Religion Brand Jeans apparel.

The line will also be featured in upcoming movies including “Cake” w/ Heather Graham, “The Fog” w/ Selma Blair (opening scene), “Domino” w/ Keira Knightley, and “Dukes of Hazzard” w/Jessica Simpson.

In addition, the brand has amassed an impressive list of celebrity enthusiasts including Kate Beckinsale, David Beckham, Sarah Chalke, Courteney Cox, Gary Dourdon, Faith Evans, Tom Ford, Jennifer Garner, Heather Graham, Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie, Donna Karan, Heidi Klum, Nick Lachey, Jennifer Lopez, Freddie Ljungberg, Madonna, Chad Michael Murray, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, Jessica Simpson, Jada Pinkett Smith, Gwen Stefani, Mr Market, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Bruce Willis, the Wayans Bros., and the Cast of Desperate Housewives.
True Religion Brand Jeans can currently be found in the world’s finest retailers including,

United States: Barney’s New York, Fred Segal, Neiman Marcus, Ron Herman, Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Atrium, H. Lorenzo, Kitson, Intermix and Jeffries NY
United Kingdom: Harrod’s, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, and Vertice
France: L'eclaireur, Printemps, Bonmarché and Galeries Lafayette - Paris; Martine Chambon - St tropez.

Italy: Gio’ Moretti, De Fano, Sugar, Leam, and Luisa Via Roma
Russia: Mercury and Opium

Webs...Are you looking in IBD for your pix? http://trimurl.com/3JU (http://trimurl.com/3JU)

I'll eat a bug if TRLG wins...I've been trashing that thing for 3 weeks.

Here is a copy of part of a post I made at another Forum on 12/19/05:

C'mon...remember Jordache, Chemin De Fer, Gloria Vanderbilt, Calvins,Gitano...The list goes on and on...maybe jeans will be around for a long time...but True Religion at $400 a pop will not...No problem buying what is hot...but when it's not hot...then it is time to let go and untie the knot. Of course, they could always pull an LAGEAR...sell the name after all the accounting scandals...Open up Skechers...and scr*w over a whole new set of investors...But I'm not complaining...I made a killing on both of them.

For those so inclined...you can take a walk down memory lane
http://www.inthe80s.com/clothes/a.shtml (http://www.inthe80s.com/clothes/a.shtml)

The only question is which is going to burst first...The Housing Bubble or the Denim Bubble http://www.slate.com/id/2124237/fr/rss/

Of course I could be wrong???

IIC,

The opening price on ENER on 1/3/2006 was $42.23 not 41.95 (we're using US dollars aren't we??? LOL). I figure this contest should encompass some of the same etiquette as golf, so I'm telling on myself. (Laughing)

BTW Ray, interesting pick in GHM, a maker of equipment that allows an oil refiner to process "sour" crude oil feedstock, which is the more plentiful product brought out of the ground around the world. You must think that GHM is a better way to leverage the very profitable sour crude processing enterprise (think VLO, FTO, and others) than buying the refiners themselves. I had profitably traded FTO in 2005.

I shouldn't have opened my big mouth. Now that I'm in charge of celebrity picks, please tell me any you have heard besides Cramer's. Now I don't want any of you jokers to tell me Madonna's pick or anyone like that, just financial people or financial commentators. I'd even take Wm. O'Neil's if he'd commit to anything you could track him on. One per celebrity please. How about the Gardner Bros?

I've got one besides Cramer's ATI, but can't recall who made it. Was a report today from the Consumer's Electronics Show in Vegas. The pick was STX and they were very enthusiastic about it. For now it will be listed as the "unknown celebrity" pick. Thanks everybody, I need all the help I can get. Remember our purpose is to show the skills of MM forum members vs. world financial experts.

Hmm...No wonder she never gave me any "Hot" tips...BTW, here is an interesting article that appeared in "Muscle And Fitness" a few years ago:

Wild ride: when she's not cycling hills, lifting weights or hanging out with IIC, Bambi Francisco chronicles the volatile world of Internet stocks
Muscle & Fitness/Hers (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0KGB), April, 2003 (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0KGB/is_3_4) by Jeff O'Connell (http://www.findarticles.com/p/search?tb=art&qt=%22Jeff+O%27Connell%22)

Having spent her hectic weekdays in San Francisco meeting deadlines, Bambi Francisco, Internet editor at CBS.MarketWatch.com, frequently takes off on Saturdays for lengthy bike rides, the Bay Area's spectacular countryside making them breathtaking in more ways than one. So dedicated is Bambi to cycling that she completed half a dozen "centuries," or hundred-mile rides, in 2002 alone.

"It's definitely a release, and it sort of puts me in this zone," she says of the biker's highs that result. "Especially if you spend as much time as I do at the computer reading and absorbing all this information, [cycling] allows you to direct your energy in a different way I have a lot energy that's bottled up inside especially since IIC lives way down in L.A., and that's sort of the way for me to release it."

Although the rides are as much about relaxing her mind as they are about exercising her body, one wonders if the Bay Area's roller-coaster hills don't remind Bambi of her job, which involves writing weekly columns on companies and trends and doing "streamed" interviews with executives--all concerned with, and disseminated via, the Web. After peaking at above 5,100 in March 2000, the NASDAQ-100, an index heavily weighted toward technology, fell to nearly 1,100 in October 2002, as several trillion dollars in investor wealth vanished during the broader NASDAQ's protracted crash. (The 100 has since recouped several hundred points.) The Dow Jones Internet Composite Index, which more accurately measures Bambi's beat, actually fared worse, falling 95% during that span. That's not a misprint.

It wasn't always that way, of course. In the days before the bubble burst, when dot-coms now trading for $1.50 didn't have a decimal point in the middle, Bambi remembers attending $400,000 parties thrown by companies with nothing to celebrate other than having gone public at a particularly opportune moment in U.S. economic history. It was while dining with a friend, though, that the magnitude, and perhaps the absurdity, of the boom truly hit home.

"I went out with IIC, and he was choosing a bottle of wine that was $600 or $700 or something," Bambi recalls. "The waiter asked several times, 'Are you sure you want this?" IIC was like: 'Yeah. What's wrong?' I didn't know what the occasion was until later in the meal, when he said, 'This is really strange, but I just became a billionaire on paper today.' And I thought, Hmm."

uphill battles

As do many people who love their profession, Bambi often winds up spending her downtime with those who share her passion. When she cycles, for example, it's frequently with IIC, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. She's been biking with increasing seriousness since moving four years ago from New York City to San Francisco--the same location her parents chose when they moved Bambi, then 4, and her siblings from the Philippines.

During the week, Bambi is more likely to get her cardio from 5-mile runs. She also hits the gym twice, sometimes three times a week for full-body weight-training sessions. A favorite activity is using the assisted chin-dip machine, which, by combining two of the best and most efficient upper-body movements, is a godsend for time-crunched trainees. The counterbalanced assist the machine can give also eliminates the only real drawback of both chin-ups and dips; that is, the difficulty of doing them for enough reps with bodyweight to fully fatigue muscle fibers in the pecs, lats, arms--pretty much the entire upper body.

Working out with neither a trainer nor a partner, except when IIC is in town, Bambi is also partial to dumbbell kickbacks for triceps, a deceptively important muscle for cyclists; lateral raises for shoulders, which improve her golf swing; pelvic thrusts, which help stabilize the core (abs and low back); and hanging leg and knee raises for abs, performed in lengthy sets designed to build muscle endurance. In support of her cycling, Bambi also does a lot of squats, lying leg curls and calf raises.

Of late, Bambi, who did gymnastics and track as a child, has combined her endurance and strength by pursuing adventure racing. "Those races comprise running, road biking, mountain biking, kayaking and even a little swimming," she says. "My team and I placed first one race and then 10th out of 150 teams [in another]. We were actually considered professionals, although I don't know that we'll keep that status." Not surprisingly, she describes her Silicon Valley teammates as driven and hardcore. "I'm just the girl who tries to keep up with them," she says with a laugh.

reversal of fortune

The Type-A mind-set of the industry types with whom she bikes was at full throttle three years ago. The hubris of those who lost their perspective inside the Internet bubble has been well documented, and none of Bambi's observations dispel that perception. Although some investors accuse financial reporters of having been "cheerleaders" for tech stocks as the bubble expanded--perhaps confusing journalists with brokerage analysts--Bambi stayed more dispassionate than most. She claims to have been as bewildered by, and wary of, the final run-up during 1998 and 1999 as she was shocked by the ferocity of its reversal.

In fact, any journalist who said back in late '99 that the NASDAQ would fall as far as it did would have been fitted for a straitjacket. "There definitely were a lot of people who knew the market was going to come down, but, yeah, I don't think they knew that it was going to come down this much," says Bambi, who started her career in New York City at a J.P. Morgan trading desk, took some graduate-level courses in journalism at New York University, then merged the two by working as a producer for business segments at CNN, where she launched a show on initial public offerings that would inevitably immerse her in the soon-to-explode world of Internet-related stocks. The only one who kept running around yelling "The Sky Is Falling Down, The Sky Is Falling Down" in late '99 was IIC.

Says Bambi: "It took some clever analysis--actually it wasn't even that clever [in hindsight] for someone doing their homework to realize that, say, [on-line travel service] priceline.com shouldn't have been worth more than the entire airline industry. It all came down to really basic questions of supply and demand, but I think everybody kind of lost [perspective] because they weren't really sure about this technology, which was so disruptive."

Like the railroad, which also set off a speculative boom, the Internet is indeed a profoundly transforming technology, and the response to such sudden disruptions can be the strange alchemy of euphoria and fear that produces bubbles in financial markets. That they are identifiable as such to most people only in hindsight is what makes them such unique and potentially devastating events. Recognizing that this one, like its predecessors, was more about psychology than technology, Bambi did a series for CBS.MarketWatch.com called "Where Are They Now," which updated readers on the whereabouts of scattered former 'Net high-fliers.

"The most fascinating story to be told from the Internet boom is the bust period, because that's when people really started reflecting on the lessons not just about economics and business but about who they became," says Bambi, who feels that the innate optimism of technology entrepreneurs will always drive them, and the economy, forward. "I think a lot of people sort of forgot what's important in life. I like asking people what they really learned about themselves, and I'd say about 80% of those I've spoken with have reached some level of awareness."

"Of what?" I ask.

"This realization that maybe they were lucky, and this realization that they're blessed with a lot of things, and that they can be taken away just as quickly. September 11th had a lot to do with that as well, but [that awareness] really puts your efforts into perspective."

Bambi Francisco

Birthplace: Cebu City, Philippines

Current residence: the Bay Area in California

Height: 5'3 3/4"

Weight: 108-110 pounds

Occupation: Internet editor for CBS.MarketWatch.com, flagship of the Web-based financial-media company MarketWatch.com. Bambi's weekly column, "Net Sense," appears Tuesdays at CBS.MarketWatch.com.

Education: Graduated from Rutgers University (New Brunswick, New Jersey) with a degree in economics

Who's the most interesting person you've interviewed? I'd say Milton Friedman [winner of the 1976 Nobel Prize in economics].

Who haven't you interviewed who you'd most like to? Hmm. Does he or she have to be alive?

That would be pretty tricky if they weren't. Okay, anybody from history. [19th century Russian novelist Fyodor] Dostoyevsky. Either him or [English novelist and essayist] C.S. Lewis. Of course, "I always enjoy interviewing IIC...if you know what I mean"?

What terrifies you? Sharks.

What inspires you? A challenge. And a person who is full of passion...Like IIC

You have such an awesome name that I have to ask you about its genesis. In the Philippines. Baby is a very common name, but my mom didn't want me to have a common name, and Bambina is baby in Italian, so she thought Bambina, and then Bambi. It had nothing to do with the Disney movie? I don't think so. No.

billyjoe

No...I never had the guts to pole vault.

I graduated from HS in 6/71...I was in the Junior Olympics in the Summer of '70 in Knoxville...I got blown out in the Prelims of the 440...But our California team won the 4x220 relay...I ran the second leg.

After my Senior year in HS I was in the National Junior Championships in Bowling Green Ohio...I made it past the prelims in the 100...but I came in 6th in the Final...I won the Gold in the 440 though.

I tore a hamstring real bad when I was a Sophomore at Nebraska at a meet at San Jose State...That pretty much ended my career...There was a bit more after that in Hawaii...But I was through...I refused the operation...But I have no problems with my leg now...I was lucky though because the damage was not at the knee or hip.(Connections)

My best times through my Frosh Year at college were:

100...9.5/10.4
220/200(Curve)...21.3/21.0...Heck...I ran 21.5 when I was a Jr. in HS...#2 Jr. in the nation(Check T&FN)...although there were a couple of Sophs that had better times in '70.
440/400...47.9/47.3...But I never trained for that...If I had...this would have been my best event...But I was too lazy to be honest with you.
60yds...6.2(Indoor)
300yds...30.7(Indoor)

Bob went to USC...I saw him a lot as a pre-teen as I went to many USC and UCLA track meets with my Dad back then...But I don't remember actually meeting him. Track was BIG TIME back then...Not so anymore though.

In conclusion...I could have been a lot better than I actually was...But my success early...As I ran 9.9 as a 9th grader and 51.3 w/o even trying(The 9th grade record was only 50.3 at the time)...went to my head...Thought I was
TOO good...Well, I wasn't...I should have actually worked at it...But a good lesson for later life...Nothing worth having or doing is easy...Live and Learn...And yes...I learned some valuable lessons from it...Doug(IIC)

Wottle was in Air Force ROTC with my roommate. After college he ran meets for Air Force and got officer pay and that's all he did. I think for only a couple years. I remember Dave Wottle...but I thought he won the 800 at Munich???...He was eliminated in the semis in the 1,500 there??? I remember him winning the 1,500 or Mile at the NCAA's though.

I think Sid was a longer distance runner...but besides the unique name I don't really remember him...Doug

Doug,
Correct again as usual. Boy it's hell growing old. I used to be really sharp. Wottle won the 8OO in Munich in 1:43.3 and broke the 4 minute mile 18 times in college. He did win the NCAA 1500 and mile in consecutive years.

Doug, thanks for checking. I'm not even sure if the first name is correct but I'm going to reach out to a few friends and get the guys name. I like that one, " I gave her the ring and she gave me the finger". Didn't Paul Simon use a similar line like, reasons to leave your lover, in one of his songs. Post some more of those lines or scan it and attach it to here.

I don't have a scanner...But maybe I'll periodically add one at the bottom of my posts...That way people who don't like what I have to say about stocks might still be interested in checking my thread...The way it's going I think I'll be relagated to page 3 pretty soon...LOL

Yes, makes you feel like an old army whore. Used to the hilt, all stretched out, and then discarded for a new and younger bitch. Typical.

The Company announced a 20% increase in the Company's quarterly dividend to $0.30 per share and a special dividend of $4.00 per share on November 9, 2005. These dividend amounts do not reflect the effect of the future two-for-one stock split announced on November 9, 2005.

Straight from the 10k, Nb you sure it is 4.30?? not 2.15 just trying to clear things up

Like Always, I'm late for the dance, two dollars short to get in and don't have the brains to come in out of the cold. Done shingling and now doing siding, so still not a lot of free time to flip you a line every now and then.

I do like your IDEA of posting the old brake up one liners. Told my work mate the one about how to keep his beeer cold tonight and he got a chuckel out of that.

If I had tuned in earlier I would have entered GTE for the yearly contest. Can't wait to see how things turn out for all of you guys. Have a few of my old winners in the lot (TRGL) and I see there is a few that I just might pick up.

How about those NU V B girls, choked in the finales, not a better place to lose it. type more at you later. Marlin

Close on 1/13/2006

Well, only 2 weeks into the year and we've already got some HIGH FLYERS...Spike is up an amazing 24.23% followed closely by J, Mimo and Mickey...all up 20%+. So far our A/D is 19/7...with an overall average gain of 5.83%...vis-a-vis the SP 500 +3.15, DJIA +2.26, DJ Comp. +1.21, AMEX Comp. +3.21, Naz comp. +5.07 and RUT +5.23...Heck...we even beat the CSSGX +5.64% vs. the close on 1/3...And if you excluded our worst stockpicker...Who's That???...We would be up an average of 6.60%.

BTW...on the indices I used the close on 12/30 rather than the open on 1/3...I was too lazy to look it up. But I used the close on 1/3 for the CSSGX since they are entered in Billy's Celebrity Section of the contest....Interesting to note that you can pay IBD $1500 a year or more...or you could have just bot all our pix and made more...And our pix are FREE!!!

I had 2 goals when I entered the contest...1) Win 2) Beat Lye...Well, I've still gotta chance to beat Lye...although not a very good one.

Sorry about the format...But if I end up in last place at the end of the year...I promise to learn the ImgeShack Thingy...

Doug, how did you pick your POTY stock? I had noticed today that it had recently gained to just below near-term resistance, then it failed and now you have a big drop. Why didn't you hold your long call until after it surpasses its most recent resistance level (early Nov 2005, at about 6.50/sh)? (Then there's more resistance just above 7/sh.)

Why didn't you hold your long call until after it surpasses its most recent resistance level (early Nov 2005, at about 6.50/sh)? (Then there's more resistance just above 7/sh.)

I based it mostly on EPS projections and what the company had to say...Obviously somebody screwed up...Doug

Spike is $$$HUGE$$$

Spike continues his Meteoric quest for +100%...At this rate he might make it by Valentine's Day. So far our A/D is 18/8...with an overall average gain of 7.56% up from 5.83% last week...Not bad considering the Naz Comp is +1.9%...Heck...we are still kickin' the cr*p outta the CSSGX +4.87% vs. the close on 1/3...And if you excluded our worst stockpicker...Who's That Still???...We would be up an average of 8.81%.

Notable moves this week besides Spike were Mickey, J and MIMO along with Parktwain and billyjoe...Actually I made a nice move too...but I was so far behind...On the downside Stocks54 and Ninner...And I guess LYE wants to make a race out of it for last place with me and Photon...Although another week like that for ELN and ADAM and Stocks54 and Ninner are gonna be joining us.

BTW...on the indices I used the close on 12/30 rather than the open on 1/3... But I used the close on 1/3 for the CSSGX since they are entered in Billy's Celebrity Section of the contest.

Sorry about the format...But if I end up in last place at the end of the year...I promise to learn the ImgeShack Thingy...

Doug, here is a quick experiment after downloading data from a Yahoo portfolio I had already set up with the POTY data. After you paste the data, to format the text using a monospaced font, place "code" before and "/code" after the pasted text (but each inside of a pair of square brackets). This site doesn't seem to support HTML's <TT> tag inside a posted message.

Updated the gain for the entire portfolio to 12.75% (I had not taken the time to normalize the number of shares to represent an equal amount invested per stock.) For the next update, I'll include each player's name in the far right column.

Did you paste the data into a WORD document?

How did you format the text?

The Yahoo portfolios have a customizable set of columns. (Evidently, this is why you can't use the "Download to spreadsheet" feature to get all the portfolio's data.) So I selected all the columns and pasted that text into a Windows Notepad window, which presents a monospaced font by default. In that window I fixed up the column headings and the spacing between columns. Then I pasted that edited text into a new message on the $$MM$$ website and surrounded the pasted text with the code.../code tags (each enclosed in square brackets, which I can't usefully show as an example in a message) so that in the message that text appears in a monospaced font.

Mickey is REALLY $$$HUGE$$$

Some shuffling in the standings with Mickey jetting to the lead. So far our
Y-T-D A/D is 18/8 down from 23/3 at the end of last week. For the week we were collectively hit pretty hard in a tough market as Ray, Sleddawg and Grebnet got whacked. Our weekly A/D/U was only 10/15/1.

Mr. M is steadily moving up and is now in 4th place. Diogenes and Stocks54 did pretty good this week too.

We have an overall average gain of 9.83% this year vs. 11.43% at the end of last week...Naz Comp is +2.07%, SP 500 +1.17% and the RUT is +7.26%...Of course...we are still kickin' the cr*p outta the CSSGX +7.36% vs. the close on 1/3...

I used the open on 1/3 for the indices... But I used the close on 1/3 for the CSSGX since they are entered in Billy's Celebrity Section of the contest and funds only price at the eod.

Well...taking a stab at this imageshack thingy...Might have to squint...But it is my first try...or is it my second try?...I'll master it by the end of the year...IIC

Back in 1974 or 75 myself an a couple of my hippie buddies took an old pig farm that a black lady friend of mine, Lizza Gore, owned here in NJ and farmed about 20 acres of the 106 acres that she owned. It was a picture to look at. Completely organic with about 10000 jersey tomatoe plants in the ground, 3 acres of Jersey silver queen corn, peas, lima beans, string beans, cantaloupe, watermelon, eggplant, and peppers. We weren't looking for notoriety or anything other than to just try to accompolish the feat of doing this without arousing to much notice of us being as wild a bunch of hippies as we were. Someone wrote a letter to the Asbury Park Press about this organic farming adventure going on down it the pines of central NJ and the next thing you know there were reporters down there doing a big newspaper spread, two full pages of wild long hair hippies living in a huge tent and living off the land. We became celebrities with trendy people coming out of the woodwork wanting to come down to work on the farm for nothing. It was the largest organic farming and pig raising operation in NJ that year. The NY and Philadelphia TV stations picked up on it and you had to see it to believe it. My hair was down to the middle of my back and my beard was at least 5 inches long. We were a sight and stoned to boot. My point is that sometimes a little advertising of what is going on can go along ways. Maybe someone should inform one or two of the financial mags about this site and the brilliant collaboration of individuals participating here. I bet it could generate alot of interest.

Lye,
I may need more goji juice to flush my system of any lingering substances from the 60's, 70's, and parts of the 80's. It's the only thing that will work. Timothy Leary would have been proud of you and your concoction Lye. Good night and good luck.

That's a cool story...But how does it end?...IIC

Doug,
That summer I lived in a big old army tent we bought somewhere, 24'x36', and set up on Lizza's property. No running water, sanitary waste system, or anything. There were two working pumps on the property for water and that was it. I'm gonna write a few short paragraphs from time to time about that summer. It was a good time and my friends and myself were an odd bunch of characters who were into alot of different things.
Anyway Lizza hadn't farmed the land or raised any hogs in quite some time. I had met her solely by chance a few years earlier when I stopped by there to ask permission to hunt the land. She was around 92 years old at the time and was living there by herself with no electric, running water, sanitary waste facilities or anything except about a half dozen wild dogs and several cats. To say the place was run down was an understatement. We hit it off an I saw all kinds of possibilities of having it as my own personal game perserve. It was loaded with deer, pheasant, quail, and rabbits. Plus was a pretty discreet hideout if that was on your agenda.
Me and two of my close friends bought some old tractors, planters, maneus spreaders, and some other farm equipment and levelled off about 20 acres of good farmland that had been let go to washes and small ravines. We put up that big tent and moved into our new digs around March of 1974. We installed a rather primitive but workable irrigation system and when the weather was warm enough we planted everything that I had mentioned earlier. I've always had a natural green thumb and everything came up beautifully. If there was a problem it was with all the necessary work that had to be done on a daily routine schedule.
I never worked harder in all my life and never really gave any thought to what we were going to do with all the vegetables once they became readey to pick. Plus just maintaining the everyday routine was alot of work.
Once everything started to come out of the ground it was a beautiful sight. Picture perfect and like a postcard. Some long haired knome called the Asbury Park Press and told them about these hippies living in a tent and growing all these vegetables organically. Well they came down and did a great two page spread on us and the whole farm scene. That did it and the next thing we knew we were flooded with people who wanted to work for just the hell of it and for free vegetables when them came in.
Well I put everyone who wanted to work to work for free produce and the place was humming with people. Long haired hippies, trendy yuppie types who were looking to slum and circulate amongst the lower types, and just regular people who were looking for something new and different. Sometimes there would be 30 or 40 people sleeping out on the ground under the stars or in the tent, depending on their age and supple bodies, at any given time. It was a beautiful thing and we were having a great time.
There were several new retirement communities being developed right in that area and the abundance of old folks wanting fresh vegetables provided us with more than enough of an outlet to sell the produce. There was so much produce that we couldn't keep it all fresh long enough to market. We set up a big vegetable stand at the front roadside of the property and they came from early in the morning until dark to buy fresh vegetables. Still there was so much going to waste that Lizza suggested we buy some piglets to feed the waste and rotten stuff to. We bought 36 little piglets for $25 apiece and they grew like corn. We fed them so much each day that you could watch them grow almost daily. There were several old beaten up pens around the property an it was perfect to keep them in.
So we spent an idillyc summer working our butts off and growing vegetables and hogs. Never worked so hard in my life for as little as we made. But we stayed in a stupor most of the time so we really didn't mind it. Made alot of new friends that summer. You would be surprised at how many married women would end up staying over for a few days at a time or the whole weekend. I don't know what they were telling their husbands. There were a few tense situations but in those days I was still winding down from the army and was in great shape and ready and capable of anything.
As everything does the growing season came to an end an everyone kind of drifted off on their own ways. I stayed in that tent until late November before it became to much to live under those conditions. I had a couple of big truck loads of corn brought in for the hogs and Lizza grew them until the next spring with some help from myself and a couple of her friends. We sold them in the spring for a nice profit. They were all close to 300 lbs. at that time. I was there when the guy who bought them killed them and boiled them in a big vat of water, shaved them clean, gutted them out and took the carcasses away. I gave
