View Full Version : Pick Of The Year Contest
Tonight (Monday) on CNBC's fast money at 8 est. they are going to make picks for stock of the year 2007. I've only watched these guys a couple times and don't have enough info. to rate them, but it should be interesting anyway.

2007...Sheesh...I don't even know what to pick for tomorrow yet...Doug

I watched it and they didn't make predictions for next year. False advertising I'd say.

Mickey is still $$$HUGE$$$
Mickey is back up over 150%...The silver and bronze race is getting clearer and My IDWK gets bot out by FLEX.
Our A/D/U was 9/17/0 for the week but our YTD remained at 13/13/0.
Overall we were -1.69% for the week...The collective portfolio now goes red at -0.03% YTD.
The CSSGX was up this week +2.84% but is still red YTD. Now I'm a little concerned that these Duncan Hurst guys are gonna learn how to read charts at IBD's $2,994.00 Chart Seminar today.
I use the open on 1/3/06 for the indices and the close on 1/3/06 for the CSSGX because funds are only priced at eod.

Mr. Market is $$$HUGE$$$ this week!!!
With BEL being delisted on the AMEX and going directly to the Pinks under the symbol BEVFF.pk it rockets over 32% this week. Unfortunately, with Stockcharts being down I cannot see if they have a new chart for the little charts links below.
Our A/D/U was 14/12/0 for the week but our YTD dropped to 12/14/0 as Stocks54 goes red with ELN
Overall we were down a smidge and our YTD stands at -0.09%
Guess I was right last week...Those Duncan Hurst guys must've paid attention at the IBD Chart seminar last weekend...They were up a whopping 2 cents this week.
I use the open on 1/3/06 for the indices and the close on 1/3/06 for the CSSGX because funds are only priced at eod.

Nine advanced and eight declined as the YTD performance dropped to +18.28%. This can be blamed on the 9.91% drop of our leader, Cramer's ATI. The only significant gainer was #6 MSFT +2.69%. IPAS lost 3.34% and was the other major loser.

Hey, Jiesen, we're just about down to the last week, and still no one knows if you're going to pick this up or not. Come on, dude, just say that you will. :)
Alright, I'll do it. But there won't be weekly updates. Once a month is all I can promise. You have until the end of January to make a pick- starting price will be the closing price (per Yahoo, unless it's shown that the Yahoo price is incorrect) the last trading day of January. Any stock trading on the NASDAQ, AMEX or NYSE is fair game, long or short.
If you win, Rob donates a price to Doug in your name. Otherwise, all rules default to the first post in this thread (except that silly rule about dividends- they count now). If you don't like my rules, you have until Jan 1 to suggest an alternative set of them, and/or volunteer for running this.
Ok, ready? Now... GO!
Only suggestion that I have is that you change the start date to Jan. 5th or Jan 12th...Otherwise, there will be no reason to make a pick until January 31st and half the people will forget about it...Doug

I traded it twice for some good profits but bought last week at a higher price than my last sale because I think it still has a long way to go. I think it is at least a double from here.

I'll play in this contest since the time frame suits me better.
And I'm sticking to my global warming theme...stocks like hmc (I'm hoping to get that on sale soon), tm, ccj, dil, ande, stp, spwr....there are others. But for next year I'll pick MGA.to (mgaff.pk), a small canadian uranium miner.

is this pick allowed? Technically, it trades on the pink sheets because its a foreign owned company. If it doesn't qualify, I'll take HMC even though its a little expensive right now and I'm hoping to buy it on sale again in January (most likely right after the deadline for entries).

Tatnic, Grebnet, why do you have to get all complicated already? It's really a simple rule- if it's on the NASDAQ, Amex or NYSE it's fair game, otherwise no. You can't pick .OB or .PK stocks. Even excellent canadian uranium miners, if they are only traded in Canada, won't do anyone here any good unless they have a Canada-friendly brokerage account. So both of you, kudos for being early on these, but unless FRPT is trading on the NASDAQ by Jan 12, you will need to find new picks. I'm sorry, but like Rob says, once I make an exception to the rules, I'll have to be making them all the time.
Also, here's the first remider for everyone:
Get your picks in for the New Year by close of market (4:00pm EST)

I will take HMC as your pick, come Jan 12, unless you change your mind between now and the deadline. At that time, all picks will be final, and prior to that, any changes can be made by posting a new message clearly stating that you want your pick changed (interpretation will be my call). An example of an acceptable way to do it:
Change my pick from QQQQ short to DIA long. (yes, if you want to be boring you can play these- and only one person is allowed to play each pick)
another good one is:
Forget about my previous pick, gimme AOB long instead!
but please don't post this:
I think I'll take KKD.PK
A post like the last one above, without sufficient clarification before the deadline, will most likely end up disqualifying your entry.

Mickey Is $$$HUGE$$$
A $$$HUGE$$$ congratulations are in order for Mickey. He ran away from the pack in early March and never looked back. Most of the year the race was for silver and bronze. But Sirtuck’s ABB and Grebnet’s APLX moved well from July thru December to break away from the other contenders…Nice job guys!!!
Our A/D/U was 11/14/1 for the week and our YTD ended at 12/14/0.
Overall we were down 1.23% for the year…Not an impressive performance. Our only saving grace was that we beat CSSGX.
The CSSGX really stunk this year… Pretty amazing that IBD claims that the IBD 100 was up over 11%...Wonder how they calculate that???...and the CSSGX was down almost 7%. Morningstar has CSSGX rated at #968 out of 969 Funds in the Mid-Cap Growth Category… My Crystal Ball says the fund won’t even be around in another year.
Well…I promised prizes for the Winners…Mickey wins a $100 Gift Card…Sirtuck wins a One Year Print Subscription to Barron’s and Grebnet wins a 6 month subscription to http://Poormans.com (http://poormans.com/)
I’d like to offer a SPECIAL note of thanks to Bruce, the owner of Poormans.com for donating the subscription to his site. As you know, several members have mentioned him here. He was featured in the Smart Investors column in IBD several years ago. I’ve known Bruce for almost 3 years on the Net and although he and I are different types of investors, it is amazing to me how many of the same stocks we come up with…I invite all of you to take a look at his site. Here is a little about Bruce: http://trimurl.com/A27 (http://trimurl.com/A27)
The Consolation or Booby Prize for the rest of you is a FREE 2 week Subscription to IBD...To claim your prize click here: http://trimurl.com/A26

I have an assignment for you. Take some of your frequent flyer miles and fly to the grand opening of the Crown Macau Casino around July 1st. Report back to me. You also can gamble if you wish. It's all a tax deductible business expense. I'll vouch for you if the IRS audits you.

Why don't you book a business seminar for their convention center while you're at it. Reveal the IIC 100 investing system to a world market.

Sorry I wasn't obvious enough the first time, Grebnet, but your FRPT was not entered due to the fact that it's not trading on the NASDAQ yet. Pink sheet and .OB stocks are not allowed. Rules (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showthread.php?t=1095&page=52) are rules (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showthread.php?t=1095), dude!
Also, we're starting on Jan 12 to give more of the procrastinators (like me) a chance to get in. And for you to pick a new stock.

you know, you gotta give credit where it's due. and I just realized that of all the things that you can point and laugh at Martha Stewart for, you have to admit that she single-handedly just might have done more for colo-rectal cancer patients than just about anyone else on the planet. If the IMCL's clinical trial works, then there's a good treatment for the disease now that wouldn't have been were it not for the support of the IMCL investors. And, really, how many of IMCL's current shareholders would have even known about the company if it weren't for good ol' Martha Stewart?
btw, my mom is colon cancer survivor, and I guess that predisposes me to getting it, too.
Thanks, Martha! (and Rob!)

I actually own some VDSI in real life, bought at $12 on 12/13. The recent breakout is welcome, for sure. I also own CRDN and SCLD that I just picked for the POTW next week. Didn't select VDSI for POTW due to possibility of a pullback after two really nice days.
SCLD and I go way back - I bought at $3 in Jan 2002, rode it down to $1 and bought twice as much there in Jan 2003, then sold it all when it hit $5 later that year. Been watching it meltdown ever since, until recently. Complete change of management, some new contracts, etc., a turnaround play that could pay off nicely if the new guys pull it off.

Jiesen>>>if you are allowed to pick a $3 stock which may get delisted:p , why not an $18 stock that is going to get listed.
Well, that's how the rules work in this particular contest.
That said, I do have some discretion as scorekeeper, and your stock being listed in January does put it almost (though not quite) in a gray area. So here's what I'll do. If the rest of the contestants are ok with it (meaning that at least 2 others give a thumbs up by this Friday, and there are fewer objectors than supporters) then I'll allow your pick, and give you the closing price on Friday Jan 19th, instead of the close of Friday Jan 12th like everyone else. Otherwise, I may (or may not) come up with another way to include your high-flier in the game. At any rate, you should also come up with a back-up pick that fits the contest criteria as of Jan 12th, if you want to be sure to get in.
So what do the rest of you think?
Should Grebnet get his pick or not?

The last time FBR downgraded CRDN, they upgraded it a month later. Check the FBR news, they have recently settled illegal trading suits.
Also, as noted by someone on the Yahoo CRDN board, while CRDN is being downgraded, AH is being upgraded. (I have not verified this.) It seems that AH and FRPT, which are 100% defense related, are moving up. Meanwhile, CRDN, making serious efforts to diversify, beat estimates and guided up, and having technological edge, is downgraded due to reliance on defense. This make no sense to me, and I will hold my CRDN shares.

Would anyone object to bending the rules since listing is 6 days after the deadline ??? If listing doesnt occur , Ill withdraw and take any verbal abuse warranted....
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nationworld/iraq/bal-te.armor10jan10,0,2049191.story?coll=bal-nationworld-headlines
Well, it's Friday now, and everyone seems to be in agreement that your FRPT should be allowed. So I'll allow you to enter it, with a price of the close of next Friday's NASDAQ quote (Jan 19th). So, if it doesn't list for some reason by next Friday, or if it pulls a DHB, get yourself ready for a spanking. You also have until the close of market today to change your pick, if you decide that you'd rather go with TRT or another stock instead.
By the way, I'll be tracking TRT anyway, as your "what if" pick. Thanks for making it!:D
Also, just for kicks, and to make things a little more interesting, I'm allowing anyone else who wants to enter another pick by next Friday to enter a "what if" pick. Same general rules as before apply, except that it can be any stock at all, as long as you can prove that it traded on ANY exchange on Friday Jan 19th. I'll give you the price you show it last trading on that day. The results of this second choice, or "what if" pick will only be used in the event that a tiebreaker is needed, or verbal abuse needs one more outlet.
Oh, and one other thing, "what if" shorts will get a double score (i.e. max gain will be 200% instead of 100%) in order to encourage at least some shorting in this contest.
(see what happens when you make me the scorekeeper?)

Sorry, RL, but you missed the deadline for the POTY contest. But what I'll do instead is add your pick to the "what if" part of it, and give you the price on at the close of this Friday. Due to the low turnout for "what if" picks, I'm extending the deadline for entry. Those in before last Friday will still get Friday's price, but those entering from now on will get the close on the last day of the week. I'll keep the contest open for new "what if" entries until there are enough players to make it interesting.

I'll give another update for the 'what if' picks later on this week, but right now my brain is fried from all the photoshopping. A huge "Thank-you" goes to ms-star (Mrs. Jiesen) for the pretty picture. I had no clue how to use PS before attempting to do this.

In the POTY contest, Spike's ZICA jumps out in the lead with a gigantic 37% gain, leaving Stky far behind in 2nd with a fairly huge 19%, and Karel barely keeping the bronze out of Mimo and DMK's hands.
Looks like Peanuts' short AZZ is kicking "what if" butt, thanks to the double score for short picks rule. I'm keeping the "what if" contest open to new picks for another month, and will keep it open through March also, if we don't have at least another 10 picks made. Nice picking, by the way, on these. Only one "what-if" pick is in the red, at just -1%. Mimo's been incredibly consistent, with 12 and 13% gains on both of his picks.
Also, if you've made one "what if" pick, you may enter one more, provided it's not the same type (short/long) as your other one. Scores will be added in the end for those with two "what if" picks. (Keep in mind the short picks count double the % gain or loss and so will be 2/3 your score, so pick them well!)

I did manage to buy the breakout on WFR (posted it here somewhere too) at $40 (early dec) and still own it, although I got cute and wrote july 55 calls for over $2 when the stock was trading at $45. Its now at 55....still too early to make any decisions, but I can either let it go at $55 for a nice gain, or roll those calls if the push continues higher to say $60. I can probably gain net $4 or so with the roll (5 on the stock, lose 1 with the calls after the roll).

Ok, Tatnic, you got it: IIG short.
I'm giving the short pick extra weight in the contest, because I was afraid with equal weight to both long and short picks, nobody would make any short picks- and I just wanted to see some of each. Also, with the short pick, your gain is limited to 100%, but a typical winner of POTY with as many players as we have will score greater than 100% with a long pick. By doubling the short player's score, it gives him or her a better chance of winning the contest.

Man, I really got hosed on the kick-off for this contest.
I thought it was supposed to use the opening price from the open on the first trading day of the year (Jan. 3rd), and that the Jan. 12 deadline was only sort of a "grace period" to let late-comers still enter.
Check this out:
Opening prices for IMCL:
1/3/07: 26.85
1/12/07: 30.60
Difference: 13.97%
I probably would have still picked IMCL on the 12th, as I did on the 3rd (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showpost.php?p=75533), but man that 14% hurts (for the contest anyway).

I must state here that I am not protesting or suggesting things be changed from the status quo. I'm just glad Jiesen has graciously agreed to handle this contest for us. But if I happen to come in 2nd as calculated from Jan. 12, while calculating from Jan. 1 would happen to place me in the catbird seat, then maybe an asterisk-ed footnote would be in order. :) (Of course, the same might be in order for anyone in the contest who winds up in that position.)

You got it, Stenz, AEIS long at today's close!
For the rest of you who may not have seen my earlier posts about the 'what if' pick, you're allowed to make two 'what if' picks for the year, but only if one is long and the other is short. Other than that, just about anything goes for these picks. You can make any stock your 'what if' pick, as long as I can find a quote for it. Rules are semi-lax on this end of the contest, and subject to change. All prices will be taken from the Friday's close following your pick. So if you pick it at 10pm tonight, you'll get NEXT Friday's close for your entry, and a likely 14% hosing (right, Rob?). But don't sweat it, it's just a game!
The reason for this other side of the POTY is to keep it going and keep it interesting beyond the initial POTY entries, which are already set in place. It also gives those of us too lazy, too busy, or otherwise too distracted by shiny things to make their original picks on time, from the right exchange, etc, a second chance to play side-by-side in a 'what if' contest. So if you're not sure about making your pick, just do it, or ask. It's all in good fun anyway.:p

well whaddya know! The next trading day after I pick it for my short, GFCI goes and finds some natural gas. Isn't that a gas? Not that I'm really complaining, since I actually own this POS. But man, talk about getting screwed and hosed at the same time! Well, I fully expect this to trade back to 0.03 by the end of the week, and be making new lows again all next month. Thanks, guys! :D
I also wanted to mention that this month will be last call for the "what-if" entries. So if you still want to make a pick, please do it before close of market 3/30/07. You'll get the price at the close the Friday of the week in which you make your pick.
Man, I really got hosed on the kick-off for this contest.
I thought it was supposed to use the opening price from the open on the first trading day of the year (Jan. 3rd), and that the Jan. 12 deadline was only sort of a "grace period" to let late-comers still enter.
Check this out:Opening prices for IMCL:
1/3/07: 26.85
1/12/07: 30.60
Difference: 13.97%
I probably would have still picked IMCL on the 12th, as I did on the 3rd (http://www.mrmarketishuge.com/showpost.php?p=75533), but man that 14% hurts (for the contest anyway).

Hey, my chances just improved quite a bit overnight. :)
see, Rob? I told you that 14% wouldn't matter much in the end... when you get to 140%, we'll take another look at your chances. ;)
By the way, anyone wanting to make a what-if pick, do it now for today's prices! Otherwise, next week will be the final week open to picks for this contest. Good luck to all, and happy trading!
By my reckoning I believe I've risen to #2 on the list. :)

Some interesting facts:
There are 28 picks in the green (each of the 3 indices is also green) and 20 picks in the red.
6 of the picks fall between the Nasdaq and S&P (0 and 4% gains).
The same player is leading in both the POTY contest, and the "what-if" scenario.
Rob's IMCL is in 3rd place, missing out on Stky's Silver by just 1%.
There are still 8 months to go, and anything can happen!

...
Also, if you've made one "what if" pick, you may enter one more, provided it's not the same type (short/long) as your other one. Scores will be added in the end for those with two "what if" picks. (Keep in mind the short picks count double the % gain or loss and so will be 2/3 your score, so pick them well!)
Actually, I need to clarify my last post... Grebnet is actually leading the "what-if" scenario. Although my GFCI short is at the top of the "what-if" list, my OSUR long drags me down to 2nd behind Grebnet and his mega-pick TRT!

I'm still winning! :D
(and though at first glance it doesn't appear that way, I'm actually in 3rd on the 'What-If' leaderboard, with Peanuts and Grebnet each tied at 63% for 1st)
Other interesting facts:
26 picks are green, 22 are red.
Average score is 5%, which falls right between the S&P and Nasdaq % gains, and is equal to the average performance of the 3 indices listed.

Ski, Stocks, and I make the current top three in the POTY contest. Congrats, Ski! You've TASR'd me off my drug-induced pedestal.
I dominate the 'what-if' leaderboard with my GFCI short pick, while Grebnet and Peanuts duke it out for the #2 and #3 spots. They'd better watch out for Stenz, though, who's sneaking up on them with a combined score of 58%. He also currently holds the #4 spot in both contest rankings.
Also of note:
23 picks are beating the indices
25 are underperforming the indices (20 are in the red)
Average score is 5.1%, which is identical to the S&P score. As a group, could we possibly be more average than this?

tasr has THE state of the art product, most well know product in that field, proven to work, winning most bs lawsuits, and was historically cheap with escalating sales at the 7.80 levels. it was meant to be a long term play so the technical aspects of the chart at that time weren't really part of the decision to buy in at the 8.00 range. I would be a buyer at this point if i weren't in it yet. i think it goes to 30 or higher easily over the intermediate term.

Thanks for the insights, guys! I just wish DMK were around so we could pick his brain as well. He sure had his share of unbelievable picks... but I guess he must be taking his break, reading his "TV Guide". ;)
As for my GFCI pick, my 2 cents is that I knew there was a good chance it wasn't worth even a penny, after all of the broken promises coming out of this one. That theory is quickly proving to be the correct one.

TASR was a great buy and long term play on this recent drop and pullback. Came back with a vengenance today. Now back above the 50, 100, and 200 ma's. Above all resistance and looks to be ready to make a move. A buying opportunity just past in the 14 - 15. This was a great entry level. I like it to 30 that's close to a double from here.

MEA's pick DSX gets an honorable mention at second in the "what-if" category, while Peanuts' and Stenz's amped up shorts duke it out for third.
MPEL is coming back strong...Of course it was a gamble anyway
FINAL RESULTS
Mr Market Stock Contest 2006
Close on 12/29/2006
Mickey Is $$$HUGE$$$
Here is a little about Bruce: http://trimurl.com/A27 (http://trimurl.com/A27)
The Consolation or Booby Prize for the rest of you is a FREE 2 week Subscription to IBD...To claim your prize click here: http://trimurl.com/A26
I use the open on 1/3/06 for the indices and the close on 1/3/06 for the CSSGX because funds are only priced at eod

Let's pretend that the Pick of the Year Contest for 2006 was actually for 2 years...Who is the best LONG TERM Picker?
Well...from my calculations that would be Sirtuck w/ ABB at +182% over 22 months. Ray w/ GHM would get the silver w/ GHM +148% followed by Grebnet's APLX +139%.
I believe Mickey would now be 4th as BWNG was taken over by LVLT...I rough guessed it but w/ LVLT tanking since the buyout I'd estimate that Mick would stand at about +75%.
Other's that did pretty good are Stocks54 w/ ELN +60% and Lye w/ ECOL +55%.
Respectable showings were also made by Peter & DMK w/ GG +42%, Sis w/ DVN +37% Gary w/ VLO +30% and Ski w/ GLD +30%.

With just a month to go, it seems that Pete is running away with the Gold.
3 of the short What-if picks are duking it out in the 68-86% range (boosted, of course, by that double-leverage rule) for hypothetical glory.
Turns out a short would have worked out better for the majority here, as 26 picks are under water, and only 22 are above it (two just barely). 5 of the winners just happen to be the 5 wiseguys who actually did go short.
Stocks, Sirtuck and Ski all get an honorable mention- with scores ranging from 55-65%, each is a contender for the Silver in this contest.

Ok, ready? Now... GO!
Here is my original post for the 2007 POTY rules- which also references the first post in the thread for the previous POTY rules.
StkyTreat has volunteered to run the show this year, so everyone please give him your best picks for 2008! I'm just reposting my old rules as a reference, and it's up to Stky to decide exactly how he want to run the show. Thank you, StkyTreat, for volunteering!
Oh, and about those prizes- Rob, you've already sent those engraved medals to Doug for the award ceremony on Friday, I presume? Pete and Stenz have already booked the red-eye to LA this Thursday so they won't miss it (Stky is planning to "borrow" his dad's car).;)
